Plant propagation part XXII based on my own experience

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Lol Sharon I want that one too. as far as my selling price usually has different factors. wholesale or retail. close friend or customer?
wholesale should be $2.00 each
retail $4.00
customer to be installed by me - priceless

so what are you doing? I am curious now...

linda they will go from (sometimes 6) zone7 to zone 10 or higher ... and yea there are higher zones. I found that out a while ago. its more for the tropical regions ..... I am planning to grow them up and propagating on them. they are a bit pricey on seeds.

yesterday 80's today 70's great weather.

Have a great evening

Jeanette ~ Steve is my husband, and yes he is still alive. He is 7 years younger than I. And I did meet him here, in my own place of business ( a nursery - surprise!) about a year after I moved up here. I did live at the house where my mother stayed, but only a short while. Then I was on my own as was she. I helped her move several times as she gave her house (that she owned) to my son and his wife, when they lived in the SF valley, but that is another story. We both really enjoyed living here in a more rural setting, though it is getting less so these days with more wineries and vineyard sprouting up like weeds after a spring rain. But that was all so long ago. My husband and I will have been together now for only 21 years in one month. We waited 6 years before getting married as we were both rather independant and had to be sure we were compatible enough. It seemed to work out quite nice, really.

I could not find any DVR's in any stores...Best Buy, Sam's, Target, Walmart, Radio Shack...etc. The only place I saw one at a decent price and that was new was at Amazon.com. The funny thing was they were offering the DVR that I already have to be sold used for over $500.00! I am glad that they had a better one that was new for less money.

You had better be more careful driving...just reading your post about your tailgating and the deer...well, you may not get to be an old woman if you keep that up!

Did you ever get your warm and sunny weather in order to ripen your tomatoes? Mine are still coming in....

Sharon ~ That is great news about Vern. You and he are in my prayers. Are you looking for flowers to go into the new blue garden??

Dave ~ Good luck to the big BOPPER!! LOL!! Be careful about those edges...et al...

Linda ~ Is TV a "guy" thing, well mostly? There are some interesting shows but not enough to keep me watching for so long....I once almost married someone and he wanted to know when he could buy me a TV, and I said no. (If he wanted to marry a TV, just buy one, a lot cheaper, right?) I thought he enjoyed my company. Now I realize we cannot constantly keep our men entertained in the manner in which they are accustomed...LOL!

JB ~ Tonight was TV night with DH. Big Bang is my favorite sitcom, no actually my only sitcom, though occasionally I will watch 2½ Men on occasion with him. I just would rather be otherwise occupied. Not OK on the sofa all night every night, no.

Dawn ~ Are you OK?

Jill ~ Are you ready for winter now? Has it turned cold yet? It was almost 90° here today, but yesterday it was 94°, though it cooled down a week before it actually turned fall officially, then "Lady Summer" continued to revisit us. Many times it is summer and then winter or at least quite cool then cold.

Who is growing veggies for fall and winter? GH, coldframe or in the ground? What about any fall landscape planting? Bulbs?

Mary sent me some Easter lilies. It has been to hot to plant them so if it is cooler tomorrow I either will plant them or put them in pots until I can finish the white flower border re-vamp. I need to pull out the rest of the lavenders. Is it too late to make cuttings from the lavender? I do not think they will transplant well, as they are too large now. Maybe Dave can tell me. I know that spring is the best time to take cuttings from them, but can they be taken now?

Sleep well, all....

Well, I stayed in the house all day and cooked and cleaned.
The house was just in to much disarray for me to stand it any more.

Merry, I have over 150 new named irises. I know that because I had 150 markers ad ran out of markers. Had to get more.

The news just said we will be in the 70s by Wednesday with lows in the 50s. That meas I need to hustle on my coleus cuttings.

Evelyn, yes I am looking for Blue flowers for my Blue garden bed. First thing I will have to do it make the bed twice as big.

I also have to dig and thin the cannas, move some hardy hibiscus into new beds, get my tomatoes out and my winter vegetables planted. Also move some daylilies and older irises. I also have to find some tree roots and cut them, get rid of three roses in my holding area.

We are still doing major rehab on the greenbelt area. Doing a major planting of agave at the end of the greenbelt at the entrance into the golf course area. To many people walking into the area from the golf course. They will, have to be able to fly when we get through planting. I will take photos. Yes, I know, when hell freezes over.

Jnette, I bet you were scared to death. What was wrong with the driver of the truck? I was scared, just reading it.

Looks like according to the news, JB is getting her rain.

I am going to sit back and read the paper so Later friends.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Evelyn, you missed what I said right after tailgating "which I never do". It was either that or the truck. I was hoping Bob would see me 'cause he knows I would not do that unless there was a reason. Maybe he would see the truck.

Don't need to worry about not getting to be an old woman. LOL, yes, this week is in the mid to high 70s but afraid it isn't enough to ripen the tomatoes. It is suppose to get down into the 30s for lows next week.

Yes Sharon I was scared. The truckers drive down from Canada to all parts and they are in a hurry to get home I guess. 2 lane highway doesn't work for their speeds tho. And especially when we have so many animals darting onto the highway. After I got home and could think about it, I guess the closer call was with the deer.

Watching a netflix movie with Bob, ttyl

Pawleys Island, SC

Rise and Shine Everyone! it is a gorgeous day! Have tons of stuff to do today, the rain has ended, so I have several truckloads of sticks to be picked up from the tropical storm, hanging baskets to be hung back up under the eaves and cleaning the house. My niece and nephew are popping in to spend the night with me and I know I will want to keep them here.

While I am picking up sticks, I hope to stick some cuttings from several things. I will check in later, but I have to get started before i talk myself out of doing anything.
Hope everyone has a great morning.
Linda

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi everyone, I wrote yesterday, but after I had it all done, the wind blew it away and I was not going to do it again. The storm is still here over NJ, finally raining. Wind blew a limb off our big tree beside the house, just scraped the house but smashed the dog pen. That was last night. They are cleaning it up now. No one was hurt, I had just been walking but stay away from those trees when the wind is high like it was. Dog, Missy, was inside watching TV with her Mother. LOL

Thumbnail by JBerger
Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Here is Missy looking out at the tree, the entire side of the kennel run facing the tree needs to be replaced. We bent it back so she could go outside, but it must be replaced. NO the insurance does not cover it. It only covers clean up of the tree. The kennel run was closed in and the entire roof is gone. No big deal, just a mess to clean up and extra money to spend they were not expecting.

All else is good. I will get back to you all later. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Glad you guys got your rain at last even tho it means work to clean up after. Also glad nobody got hurt.

We have one more day after today of the warm weather and then it is back to the cold and possibly colder. Hate to see it coming. I suppose we will have this month to clean up and get ready for winter. Hope so. At least in a normal year this is the way it will be.

So, gotta get busy. ttyl

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

mornin glory ....lol

hmm cuttings... interesting you should ask about them. I have been pondering the same delima only with my little crepe myrtles. I think your zone 8 should allow you enough time to get them rooted and whould do quite well. I typically use this time of year for the cooler plants like dianthus (pinks) for the life of me I can't think of any other cool weather flowers (pansies and snap dragons). I hope to do a tray of them today so i can squeek them by old man winter.
I found a new product (ok new to me). Its decompressed granit. It looks like sand, the bag says nothing else is neede to form path's walkways and seating area's. I have a huge swampy area in the nursery which I started battling last month. Thats all I need to do is trip up in the mud and break something. I would really prefer to have the soupy mess gone before I finally get the ground cloth down. yes I have been procrastinating it as you might have noticed, but its been for this reason. I hope this solves the issue. its less than $4.00 a 50# bag so its cheap enough to try out. I will let you know how well it works. I am hopeing to get it installed so I can roll out the cloth.
once I have the 1st section done I will move everyone else onto it so they are ready for winter. I pulled all the plants from a 20' section in the nursery out and set them in one of the unfinished planting beds along the brick wall. I am going to leave them there untill next spring. I plan to cover them with frost blanket and a thick layer of leaves. I came up with this idea last spring as it was near impossible to clean up the plants so I can get in and apply some osmocote to the pots.
so Evelyn I would go ahead and stick some cuttings, I am not sure when they will break new growth from the trimming so choose your cuts carefully.
well its time to get moving. I have the 1 tray to do as well as 30 little dutch iris blubs to plant.
remember green side up
Dave

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Dave, my ground cover in the back landscape, which is not planted or grass is DG. Here you can get it in many different colors. He i is sol by the ton, not the bag. It is great for soaking up moisture and compacts easily. But I am concerned for you that you might have to much moisture because your moisture is on going. In the desert, the moisture comes and goes. So keep a good eye on it u til you are sure it will do what you need it to do.

Well for two days I have done absolutely nothing. We woke this morning to a light drizzle. Temperatures are dropping and rain is a possibility for next week. I drove by the nursery today on the way to Costco. I did not stop. I have enough to do without buying more.

Linda, are you done with the sticks yet? Can you burn them in the fireplace. Here we are not allowed to burn wood in the fireplaces. Pollution.

JB, glad you got some rain but Boo on the winds.
The attached photo is my favorite iris.

Dave, here in the SW violas are a big winter flower, along with snapdragons, wave petunias, geraniums, tropical hibiscus (until it gets really cold), lobelia, inpatients (sheltered), mums, lavender, astille & cordalines. I am sure there is more, but cannot think of them.

I think I know why you cannot find a DVR for sale. Tivo won a big lawsuit from Direct TV. They agreed to agree but everyone has to make their own deal. I have 5 DVR. Yes I am spoiled but if I am going to watch TV. I do not want to watch commercials. I will do a little more researching but I remember reading that in the Wall street Journal a few months back.

Later friends.

Oh Sharon, that is a beautiful Iris, when you split it keep me in mind, I would love to have some of it and I will pay for it.

I am so sorry I have not been very active lately, things are just crazy around here plus I was pretty down and out a few days. I am so much better since the chiropractor took care of my sinus...I had no idea that was the problem. I thought I just needed more sleep. What a jerk I am.

Dave I hope you are feeling better, sounds like it.
Evelyn, how is everything with you.
Linda, are you o.k. You got a real soaking.
Mary, did you get as much rain as Phila. did? Lancaster was really under water, They closed schools, court house,, etc. My kids were o.k. because they live on a hill and do not have a basement. Thank God.
Jeanette, last but not least, my dear friend, how are you? Your family?
If I missed anyone I apologize,I have not been doing any internet stuff except my sales and I am rushing.......the tree expert is coming this morning and he will decide can we save the rest of the big tree or must we take it down before it falls down on the house. the center of it seems to be retaining water. What next?

I hope after today things calm down. I turned the heat on in the house this morning. Now it is time to spend money on Oil....all summer it was the electric. Will it ever end. LOL

The sun is out, it is a beautiful Fall day and more rain is expected tomorrow. I think we should plan a Halloween Party. I love Halloween. Talk later. Have a good day. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good morning everyone:
I managed to get a lot done yesterday even though it did not look that way. I got my 1 flat of cuttings stuck, 24 little bulblets of Ixiora and a dutch iris (yellow). I have 12 more dutch iris bulblets to plant, they are a dark purple called Purple Sensation. we got them at ace hardware for 3 bucks a pkg.
I also got some crepe myrtle seeds I managed to get to sprout. I am hopeing for a low grower out of the mix. it looks like there are a few good candidates but we will see how they do through the winter. I also got my 5 mums and 1 new aster in the ground. I am so glad to have the workers gone from out front. there was no way I was going to plant the mums and have them trampled. lets see oh yea I got a few odds and ends planted also. Japanese blood grass a moss verbenea, black mouldry and a few volunteer echinacea's.
I finally said enough and pulled the golden rod and another volumteer plant out of the corner in back. I listed my Odds and ends with a wholsale group so hopefully I will sell them rather than have to carry them through the winter. I know they are priced correctly as they are selling quite well (3 orders) and its only been 1 day.
My niece put the bags of granet in back by ny problem area so I will be spreading it out a bit later this am..I am also going to get the ground cloth in over the muddy mess. I am planning on doing gravel path's so I don't have any grass to fight with. also I won't have to decide weather or not to kill it.
Does anyone else fight with the rolley pollies? it seems no matter what I do they always come back. personally I wouldn't mind them but when I ship stuff out I have to make sure they are all gone. I am putting down some spectracide to take care of grub's flea's, millapeads and the rolley pollies. I guess my question is do they ever go away?
I had a momma wolf spider scurry away from me the otherday when I was doing some rearrangeing. she had a huge behind and then I saw it move which i determined that it was all the little baby spiders. most of the time I don't mind the spiders its just when you go to pick up a pot and you see the little thing go scurrying for cover.
Have a great day everyone oh yea this is lucky just hanging out

Dave, what is a rolley pollie? Or however you spelled it? Pill bugs? Is that what you have? And the spider with the little ones on her back is yuck!! I do not, NOT, like spiders.

Sharon, not sure what you mean about the Tivos, vs the DVRs?? Are you saying that if we find a DVR, we better buy it? I will tell Bob.

Maybe I will take a look on Amazon too Evelyn. Will have to talk to my daughter about that. She is like Sharon and has 5 of them. Will tell her she better hang onto them they will probably be worth something.

Will do a quick research on google.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi peeps!

It was a great day to work outside .... just seems progress is slow .... but progress is being made. Did not need to water plants. Did have to gather a good deal of branches yesterday ... next door neighbor told rains last night were heavy .... I slept through it all.

Sharon's iris taste is excellent.

Looking forward to viewing pictures of the remodeling that Dave had done.

Here is a picture of some of the ajuga Jeanette sent me awhile ago.

LOL watch out Merry, those will be growing all over on top of each other next spring.

It was a gorgeous day today here also. According to the weather person it will be the last for a while. Suppose to get cold for a week or so.

I planted a couple of heads of garlic today. Never have grown any before so I didn't plant a lot. This was just a trial. I got about 10 plants of the hard neck and 15 or 20 of the softneck. Don't know which will be best but should be fun to see how they turn out.

Finally picked a few tomatoes that had ripened. I am finding that the tomatoes are turning out different than they were suppose to be. i.e. my Early Girls are great big ones. Should not be. Also, another is a cherry tomato and it should not be. 2 of my sisters said they are having the same problem and we got our seeds from different vendors. What do you think is causing this? Maybe I will run this by the tomato forum.

Good evening

pill bug rollie polley - http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/5440/

they are a real pain int ole keaster. I swear they are pregnant when they are born and they give birth to 1 million babies... honest I believe its true... well ok maybe i exagerated a little...tiny bit ...

Have a great evening its off to bed

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well, we had a little rain today. Suppose to be more this evening.

Tivo was the company that invented the DVR and patented it. They were in a partnership with Direct TV. Then that partnership broke up and Direct TV manufactured their own DVR. Sometime in late 2008 or early 2009 Tivo sued Direct TV and Dish. Direct TV and Tivo became partners again and Dish lost the law suit. Dish now owes Tivo 38 million dollars and cannot manufacture DVRs. That is probably why you cannot find them in the store. Further searching shows Direct TV and Tivo are coming out at the end of the year with the new TIVO. Web box, movie downloads, music and I guess anything else you want to do in one box. When we first got Direct TV we had a Tivo and it is so much more superior than the current DVRs that I cannot wait for the new one. But I will probably put it on one TV if I can leave the other DVRs on the other TVs.

I just got an ad in the mail. Get Direct TV for one year, over 150 channels, $24.99 per month and you get a free HD DVR. Call 1888 778 8695. Offer ends 10/6/10. Must be paid by credit card.

Jnette, I was going to tell Merry the same thing. I had two plants of ajuga about 5 feet a part and it only took them one year to meet. Kind of like the creeping crude.

JB. I used to have sinus problems all the time. I use a saline mist spray daily and it certainly helps. But in the desert we get sinus infections often because it is so dry. In 1994 I had 11 TIAs. Had a MRI to determine how many I had actually had. During the MRI, they stopped the procedure to introduce dye into the vein. When they got through with the MRI, he young man asked me how I felt. I said, not to good. He said, well you shouldn't because you have one massive sinus infection. They concluded that the sinus infection was causing the TIAs. To this date, if I get really tired, I will turns names around. Instead of Hannah and Sarah, I will say Sannah and Harah. When I do that now, I rest for a day because I have pushed the envelope.

Right Dave.

Evelyn, got any blue flowers up there to go in my blue bed. I got the bulbs yesterday and I need to refrigerate them for 45 days. Is not cold long enough here for maximum bloom.

I have a GFI somewhere in the laundry room that I cannot find. It is the one the burglar/fire alarm is connected to. The laundry room has 3 different GFI's and I have found 2. Yes, it is a very large laundry room. One wall of the dining room is on the same GFI. DH is getting me the house plans so I can search the electrical layout and see if I can find it.

We were sitting here last evening, reading the paper, when the fire alarm went off. We were scrambling around trying to find the fire when the alarm company called and said the battery had run down and there is no electricity to the unit. I found a lot of dust behind things, but no GFIs.

I have the blueberries planted in three large pots. One is right outside the laundry room window. I put a tomato cage in the pot to give the blueberries something to grow on. Well a hummingbird has used it all summer to sit on and say hello to me every morning. There is also a door right next to the window that is mostly glass. After he sees me he flies over to the window and buzzes the window and I go over and we have a talk. If I go outside, he flies up into the neighbors pine tree.

Today he was there again. I had not seen him for several days so I thought he had taken off for Mexico. Some stay all winter and maybe he will.

Well DH just brought down the plans from his office, so I need to see if I can find that GFI on the plans.

Later everyone. Love you just about as much as I love myself....LOL.....

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Dave, all rolly pollies do here is eat dead leaves and help compost. What do they do there?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning,
Sharon, what is a TIA? I am a bit slow today. It is a beautiful day but the past two days of cleaning up and stress made for one of those sleepless nights. I really think most of it was the fact we did not cook and ate McDonalds most of the time. God, that stuff will kill you. As much as I love it once in awhile, two days of meals from there can make me very uncomfortable. LOL
I turned on the heat in the house and GH this morning. The sweater weather is my very favorite.
Mary, did I hear this morning on TV that people in your town are not to drink the water unless you boil it, especially if you buy from a specific water company?
Barney is still not normal. This gets old after awhile and I am trying to be patient, but it is wearing me down.
Evelyn, my privit lost two leaves and I swear it has grown already. I am sure that is just wishful thinking, but you know me.
Do you all remember the sweet shrubs discussion we had when I wanted to purchase some. Well, the plants I purchased were planted in the field in the midst of all that heat, and I watered them religiously and they must have grown a foot. I am so happy. Something good came of the summer.
Must go to eBay and process sales. Hugs. JB

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

JB ... it was very obvious to me last night that there was something wrong with the water. I am a person who enjoys soaking in a tub of very warm water .... even in hot weather ..... last night my bath water had a yellow tinge.

I do have a good supply of bottle water on hand.

I have been placing my Christmas catcus inside a closet at night for the past few days .... so it has no light for 12 - 14 hours.

Here is a picture I tookof it yesterday.

It ia another beautiful day .... they are calling for rain tomorrow ... so I need to spend most of my time outside today.

LOVE YA ALL

good mornin to all:
I am not sure what the rollie pollies do to the plants, but I happened to look at one of my squish vines that the cucumber beetles had chewed a huge hole in and there were 20 RP's in the wounded stem. I read where they go after wood and organic matter. I am afraid they are eating roots causing issues with my container grown plants. I have seem root area's where they had hollowed out and area and path's through th rootball. I wonder if once they finish all the woody material in the pot they turn there attention to the roots and other organic matter. I know they have to be doing some damege as wood is basically a big section from a plant. even roots take on a woody form.
everything you wanted to know about rollie pollies but were afraid to ask ......

I had a great day yesterday. planted some of my stock plants along the north side of the house. I have been waiting for the siding guys to vacate so I don't get any damage to my plants from them.

Ok everyone a gentle reminder to fertilize your landscape plants. the upcoming winter is one of the roughest times on woddy ornamentals. by feeding and watering them well you make them better equiped to deal with the winter month's and you will experience fewer losses. I use a product they sell at home depot called color boost. its a 90 day fertilizer with both amonia and uhrea forms of nitrogen. amonium nitrogen is released quickly and used by the plants imediately by the plant and the urea form is slowly released over time as it breaks down with the water.

we went to see the social network last night. I liked it nice story and was entertained. Personally I judge movies by the question was I entertained? did I get bored or start to think about other things? its kind of an escape from everyday life.

its a chilly 45 degrees this am and I like this time of year. its cool enough to allow you to function but not so cold you have issues to deal with because of it.

Have a great day
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

nice plant mary. do you do the long night treatment other times in the year or is christmas the only time?
For those not familiar with the process. by giving specific plants longer nights it forces the plant to bloom acording to your schedual. Mums, pointsettia's and xmas/easter cactus are the only ones that come to mind at the moment. it needs to be as totally dark as possible as any interuption could through the bloom time off. Its especially difficult in the home as lights are consistantly turned on and off all night long. Also outside in a city setting can be challenging because of the street lights and neighbors turning on their outside lights.
here is a pic of some plants I bought the otherday. these are chamaecyparis genus. evergreen shrubs usually set in the landscape as an accent or focal point.

Mary that is a nice looking CC. What color is it? Lots of new growth on it too. Good Job.
do you have a name for it or was it not marked. There are so many species of CC I am overwhelmed when I research them. I have been sending info I copied and make copies of to customers buying certain species from me. That also has the link at the bottom of the printout where they can look it up. I do not take any credit for the information I merely send them a copy of what I printed. The size of the leaf it different. I have a friend who gave me some NOID cuttings and they grew. I sell them as Petra's Pink and tell everyone I do not know what species they are. She got them from a lady in South Africa and I am still trying to ID them. LOL They are selling good and they are very nice healthy plants. I just wish I had them identified.
Dave, that is a healthy looking plant. Will you grow them to sell or to propagate?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, I'll see how this football game goes to see if I want to spend 3 hours watching it.

Then have to go over to my sisters and get some halibut she bought for me. A fellow at the farmers market a few weeks ago was taking orders for it for a trip to the coast. He just showed up yesterday with it. She said it is gorgeous, flash frozen steaks from Alaska. $9 per pound which is real cheap as it is normally $15 a pound in the super markets where they don't take very good care of the fish.

I guess I am pretty picky because if I can smell fish when I walk into a meat market or grocery store, I know they are not taking good care of it so I will not buy fish there.

JB, TIAs are mini strokes. My mom used to have them and then she had a real stroke and we got her to the hospital within a half an hour (they say 3 hours and they can treat it with TPA) but they, Group Health which is the insurance she had, did not give her any (it is very expensive) and she died of a massive stroke that night.

I don't know all the facts, but as I understand it, TPA was developed by Monsanto and it reverses (not sure if that is the procedure) the action of the stroke. But, you have to treat it within 3 hours of the stroke. I don't know about TIAs. Have never heard of their treating those with the TPA. Guess I should google TPAs to get the real facts. Oh well, would rather guess. lol

Dave, I always heard not to fertilize after August so you don't have new growth going into winter???

I checked Amazon again for DVRs and they do have some but because of the difference in prices it appears that there may be a difference in that some might have hard drives and others don't. Some are less than $200 (new) and others are over $800 new. But, don't know what you mean by Direct TV and Tivo making them Sharon, the ones on Amazon were Toshiba and a few others.

I am calling my daughter this afternoon to talk to her about buying one. I understand that with Tivo you have to subscribe also??? Another %@&%& month bill. No thanks. Between the TVs and phones my whole retirement check keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Well, this game isn't doing much but the problem is my sister will be watching it so I would be interrupting her if I went over to get the halibut. Plus, my nephew is going to dig me some horseradish and he will be watching it too. Guess I will have to wait, might as well sit down and hope the Seahawks get with it.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

JB, Jeanette described TIA perfectly. They are small strokes that normally preclude a major stroke. During these small strokes you do strange things. Run into walls when you are walking. Slur your words or turn words or names around. Get confused or change the subject of what you are discussing in the middle of a sentence.
I was a mortgage loan office for 35 years. You take a mortgage the same way every time because there is a form to complete.

I started going to the doctor because I was asking the client questions out of order. I would ask them where they banked when I should have been asking where they worked. My doctor told me I was lo on sugar and needed to drink orange juice at lunch and around 3pm. Soon, if I took an application after 3pm it would take me for ever. I was just spinning my wheels. So I stopped taking any mortgage application after 3pm.

Then one morning I was interviewing a young couple and about 5 into the interview, I asked a question and it came out completely garbled and at the same moment I had a sensation that started at the top of my forehead and immediately traveled down my face on the left side. I buzzed my assistant and ask her to get my doctor on the phone because I think I just had a stroke. You have heard the rest of the story.

JB, I cannot believe you ate McDonald's food. You are really going to feel lousy later today and tomorrow. Enough sodium o sink a ship not saying you are a ship. Yes, they are good but I have not eaten MacDonald in years. Here it is In & Out Burgers. Thank you Lord, they are over 5 miles away. I laugh when I drive by and talk to the drive in. Ha Ha, not this time.

I am sitting on the back patio and had to go in to put on a long sleeve pullover because it is chilly. Getting ready to rain, 50% chance, and of course wind.

I am getting ready to have a cup of coffee and a slice of pumpkin pie.

Dawn is posting on Trash to Treasure but not here. Something is wrong. Did we hurt your feelings Dawn? She is fostering a new dog.

Jnette, Tivo has the premium DVR. Like plants, you pay them when you build one and sale it. The difference in price is determined by hour many hours will the DVR hold. If you are recording in HD, it takes twice as much room. Some you can record two programs at a time and watch what you have recorded at the same time. There are three shows on one day which is NCIS, NCIS LA and The Good Wife. I like all three. I record them and watch them the next evening. Three hours of TV takes about 1 1/2 hours to watch. The more cost to the DVR, the more whistles and bells. Later, right now it is pouring rain and I want to watch.

Would you believe that after an egg mcmuffin, a grilled chicken sandwich and a quarter pounder with cheese plus fries and coke over two days, my BP was 120/69 this a.m.

I am always eating healthy and boy all that sodium and fat made me feel so bloated UGH.

Phila. is playing WA........WA is winning. Eagles quarterback got hammered and is out of the game. WA plays rougher than PHILA. That is darn rough.

Thanks for the explanation of the strokes, I now remember, my friend had two and she is now unable to remember who I am, but it is not from the strokes. So sad. She is ok but she is no longer active and she was really active.

Just started to rain again..........so much wind and it is all coming off the ocean, which could last for three days. Oh well, Have a good evening and take care. BURP!!!!!!

JB .... the cc is a red Schlumbergera truncata my granddaughter gave me last year for Christmas. This is my first attempt in forcing it to bloom. I successfully rooted some cutting from it (see picture).

They still have a ban on our drinking water.

Sharon .... it is so nice when someone can take pleasure from just watching the rain and seeing the beauty in it.

I havested some seeds today including some new guinea impatiens.

Time to put the CC back in the closet.

Yes, to us in the SW, rain is unusual so we do stop and watch it. Our down pour lasted about 4 minutes but we have had brief showers three times today and the high was in the 80s. It was a marvelous day. I took the dogs for a long walk, did some more cleaning and went to HD for potting mix. They had 64 cu ft for $9. Miracle Grow Moisture Control. I purchased 10. Also bought 2 pink lady cordelines and a beautiful Plumeria.

One time DH and I were in, San Juan, Puerto Rico for a business meeting. The night we got there, we had just arrived at the hotel, it started to rain. It rained 8 inches in about 4 hours. Of course, the individuals in the group that were from the Southwest were just in awe. We just stood by the front, under shelter and watched walls of water fall. The staff of the hotel thought we were crazy.

I have been a bad girl on the internet. I have numerous plants coming. They are going into the greenhouse. I will be busy soon. They will be here next week. When I get a chance I will copy you a list of my obsession. Later. I have a baked potato in the oven. That is going to be my dinner.

Ok, regarding the discussion of DVRs....I was referring to ones that can be purchased without a requirement of *any* type of monthly fee, which would include a satellite, cable or Tivo. We have an antenna, and that is all. No monthly fee. We are 2 seniors living on our monthly allowances. We do not have cable service in our area as well as high-speed internet, but we can live without them. Both DISH and Direct-TV compete up here for people's wallets as well as an independant or two. (If you buy a TIVO DVR, you must pay them a monthly fee.) So we will stick to our budget-concious ways for now. (And probably for later as well...LOL!!) I could not believe that Amazon was selling the DVR used that is the same model that I currently own for over $500. as I paid a little ove $200.00 for it. Then I saw the Magnavox DVR brand new for $227.00! It was an upgrade from the Philips I now own, which works great and I have never had a bit of problem with it. I can record more than enough to watch, in fact I have to cut out programs or just erase them as I do not have time to watch them all. What will happen when I get more than 2 channels to watch, LOL?? The fellow in the Best Buy said they don't sell DVR's to the public, just to satellite and cable companies. I am like Sharon, as I am spoiled now and have little patience for watching commercials. OK, I won't say any more about it, since this is a propagation forum.

I did ask if anyone is starting any new plants from seeds or cuttings this fall. Dave is, anyone else?
I won't until I get back from my trip, of which I am leaving on the 14th.

JB ~ Yes, the privets are very fast growers. I hope your put them in their separate pots. I planted the willows. One is doing great and one is not doing as well...we'll see.

Sharon ~ Look in your mailbox next week. Mostly seeds and one surprise.

Oh guess what?? It actually rained last night and part of this morning!! Whoopee!! I thought it smelled like rain, but when the ground was actually wet I was really happy! I spent the day with my middle granddaughter (age 26) shopping. She agreed to help me pick out some clothes for my trip. And I did not have to worry about having to water the plants when I got home...an added bonus!

Sleep well, everyone.

I know Evelyn, you figured out how to get George Clooney in an envelope. I love surprises.

Our Direct TV bill is $220 each month. That is because my DH has every sports whatever you can imagine. But he spends money on nothing else so I have no problem with the bill.. We do not eat out or go to movies so it is basically his entertainment. Thank goodness I have my laptop. I cannot garden in the dark.

We had rain again. The air and soil smelled so great. It was mostly cloudy the majority of the day.

Full week of gardening this coming week. I have the house back in order so I can put my focus on the garden.

I am so far behind in responses you all will just have to forgive me. Love you all. Sharon.

Evelyn my daughter told me the more expensive DVRs have hard drives and the cheaper ones don't. She explained all of it to me and when she got thru Bob and I decided we would not use one that much anyway. We watch the news channels, C-Span and have netflix for movies, sometimes we watch law & order if we can find one we haven't seen already. Other than that we don't watch anything so we wouldn't record anything. Now isn't it silly that we considered it.

Where are you going Evelyn? I don't remember a vacation.

After living in Seattle for 30 years I don't really care to see rain any more thank you. LOL, I am sure if I lived in your areas I would feel different. Actually I do believe I would move back there in a minute if the cost of living there were not so high.

Evelyn, it is the wrong time of year to start seeds here. I was rude not to answer you. I'm sorry.

Well all, I am going to bed. I haven't been feeling well the last couple of days for some reason. nite,

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Jnette, you had better not get sick.

JB. your pussy willow lost all of it's leaves about two weeks ago. Went out this morning and it is loaded with about 10 new leaves. I would say it is happy. The other one is still alive and the same as it arrived healthy. You also have a d-mail.

Evelyn, I hope where ever you go on vacation, have a great time. Maybe take an extra suitcase for plants you find that you want to bring home....

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn, if you are leaving the country for your trip, please be careful. They are posting a travel warning for U.S. tourists abroad. Have a great time. How long are you gone for?

Sharon did we both miss her telling us?

I was looking at my pw yesterday and one has lost all of it's leaves and the other one's leaves are turning brown. But, it is that time of year here. I have them in a pot and will winter them over with the rest of my stuff I have to do that with.

I am going to give Bob that job of finding a way to store all of my plants to winter over. That way he will take extra care of them if he thinks he is responsible for them. LOL

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

I, too, am bringing in plants for the winter, even tho, we are now getting summer (in the 80's).
Sharon, I will be digging the blue flowers to send to you, but I will dmail you when I ship them. I have been like Dave, back is really hurting, and Mr. Sciata has not left for some time. I think the down spiral has had a lot to do with the pain, making it worse, so I have made up my pea brain to just work through it and get things done. Halloween is right around the corner and I just have to get it done for the kids, they do enjoy it so.
JB, any hints about over wintering palms. They are huge, well for potted ones anyway. Can I trim off the lower branches without killing them? Some will have to go under my lights that I normally use for seed starting. Boy what a job. Walmart didn't do me any favors by selling me so many for a buck apiece. They did really well in the breeze way, and now are so big.I just can't bring myself to let them die in the winter. btw, hope your Barney is better.
Dave, take your time, like me, hehe
Jeanette, stop sending me the cold weather, let me have just a little summer before the minus' hit, please.
To all the rest: I am keeping up with you via reading the posts, but my break is over, and I must get busy. Will talk to all of you later, Lee

Good morning all:
we have such swings in temps all year we fertilize all year round. the ferliizer is to make sure the plants have plenty of nutrients to survive the winter. we have spells where the temps pop up above freezing and the plants do some inner growth so they need the food available. I do a 90 day fertilizer and do it in the spring summer and fall. I realize I loose 90days somewhere in the mix butthe plants shut down in the high heat of the summer too so its a wash on time.
yes new growth is a no no into the winter and thats why you don't trim on plants after september. I truely believe the little bit of new growth that gets lost is well worth it since the plants need the food. also when I do my fall application the night temps are down low enough that the plants know its time to rest and take in nutrients to get through the winter.
today is packing day. I have sold a few of my plants as a fall sale. I would rather see them sell at a discount that winter them over. I am trying to get beyond the winter them over stage so i am just about out of plants ready to bump up and just have the ones still growing and need the time to grow

I am planning on using them as stock plants for cuttings this fall. I will pretty much deleaf the entire plant for cuttings this fall. I don't know if I will get them all or just one or two of the 3 cultivars I bought. I may jump them into 3 or 5 gallons to survive the winter.
I ate some mc'ds a month or so ago and I could barely choke it dow from the sodium and the greese. I used to live on big mac during college. it was an easy drive thrue and go with one hand stearing and one hand holding the big mac. it was highway miles and not much congestion so it was easy. has anyone ever done the dump the fries in the bag so they are easier to reah while driving?

well its packing time. final fall sale has been pretty good i just wish I had started it earlier. oh well live and learn. I guess i will bump up my cells to 3.5's for thier long winter nap. I am so glad I have most of my stuff packed in together in the back bed. less to move to winter over.. I always put everyone pot to pot and cover with leaves to get through the winter. I may try the mini hoop houses I have seen some folks use. I just don't have any experience using them and it looks like a pain in the behind.
38 degrees this am. oct 8th earliest temp at or below 32. I am glad we only have 2 days of this then back to the warm 70's during the day.

Have a great day
Dave

I told you.....3 more days of rain....oh well, at least we are not watering all the time.
I just got back from taking all my orders to the post office and then I went to the Pharmacy, the bank and the grocery store. I am here now to have lunch and inform all of the people who I shipped to today that their plants are in the mail. Paperwork day too.
Lee, I would suggest you cut back on the amount of water you give it and make sure it has some good light, not sunshine, just good light. That should do fine. If you see it turning brown, cut back on the water, unless it is from not enough water. You will be able to tell which it is.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hey, I missed Evelyn going away too? Have a great time girl and be safe. Hugs. JB

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

OK, I am not going very far. Just to S.CA for a high school reunion. We will be having dinner with friends as well and meeting with my sister and her husband, as I have not seen her for many years.

It rained again and actually the very loud thunder and bright lightening kept me awake for most of the night. My husband slept through most of it. It was such a change if it did that every night, I would probably sleep through it as well. And yes, Jeanette, I would not like to live where it rains most of the time. It is just so dry all summer here that it is a big change for us. It is actually wet outside! My husband wanted to moved to the PNW a couple years ago until the housing slump. Now our property isn't worth so much. I would still rather be here and visit cooler places rather than live in a cooler/colder place.

Here is a picture of the "cottage garden" border as of two days ago. I am hoping for more filled in by next year. The Russell lupines have survived the summer, well, most of them anyway. If anyone is interested, I can post a list of contents, so far....

Ok Dave, I didn't get my hostas I bought from you planted!! No!! I did not. They are still in the pots I planted them in. So, my question to you is, do I leave them in those pots, 4", and plant them in a bed for the winter, pot wall to pot wall, or take them out of the pots and plant them in the bed. i.e. heel them in? I have got to get them taken care of now!! We have maybe, if we are lucky, until the middle of this month, or if we are lucky, to the end of the month, before it freezes and/or snows.

Don't you love the lightning storms Evelyn? You probably don't get them very often do you? We don't get them nearly as much as we used to and darned if they don't come in the middle of the night when we do and I sleep right thru them. The little blind dog gets very scared of them tho and fortunately Bob hears her and he gives her a pill to sedate her. She goes crazy. I don't blame her. Must be terribly scary not knowing where that noise is coming from.

Have a good time Evelyn, it doesn't matter how far you are going. It will be nice seeing your sister.

I sure wish I could keep the warm weather coming for a short time for you Lee, but we are due for 75 on Wednesday and then it is cooling off again.

Do you guys get stink bugs? This time of year they come in the house to get warm I guess. Bob sprays all around the doors, windows, and bottom of the siding and around the basement. Also inside the house all along the openings of the doors and windows with Ortho Indoor/Outdoor bug killer. We have used it for many years. He uses it in the spring and the fall.

When we had equipment out her logging, it was daddy long legs that were everywhere. I wonder why. We never saw them any other time. They must nest out there in the trees.

Well, I cooked a chicken this morning for the dog food so must go finish it. ttyl

Oh, and Evelyn, your plants look like they are doing so well but no thanks, I am done planting for the year. Tired. LOL, have to tell you something quick before I sign off. Several years ago my sister in Stockton, CA asked my sister, who lives up here, if she wouldn't rather live down there where everything grows so well year around. My sister told her, no, I couldn't take it. I need the rest I get in winter. That's me. bye

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

lol Jeanette:
I am looking forward to a nice peacefyll winter this year. I have a few Daylily seeds to start but thats about it for the winter. as for the hostas, I would get them planted if possible. I planted a bunch of things I got in for cutting stock. I am not sure they will do well through the winter but I have to try. basically the ground is better than a pot anyday of the week.
not much happening here. JB I am jellous I have so much to ship it takes me a few days to pack and ship. Of course it takes a lot of little dollar plants to equal any good sum of sales. I just got back from fed-up to send out the 1 order I packed today. 120 plants. a good order. shipping is murder though. anyway have a good evening all
Dave
