Sharon, have you tried the Hatch chilis? I love Rollenoes and Chicken Enchiladas, Gazpacho, you don't like Mexican food? What were they doing with them after roasting them at the grocery stores?
Where does that guy get the mum oil? Never heard of it. I don't know why not, there is Pyrethrum oil. I have never used it so don't know what it is for.
I got a lot of stuff heeled in today, Sharon, heeled in is the same as "hilled" in. The same as your "holding" area. Only mine are to keep them over the winter so they don't freeze. Hopefully.
Well Sharon, let us know how Vern does in his surgery tomorrow. We will be thinking of him.
Plant propagation part XXII based on my own experience
They people were giving them their bags of peppers, they were roasted and given back and they left. I did not stick around very long.
He gets the oil from a special order. It is $100 for a gallon. He has over 30 greenhouses that are very large in length. You use 1oz per gallon. When I get the info, I will post the link. I could buy a gallon and separate it to supplies for everyone. I will look into that.
Later, I am hungry. I need to make dinner.
whoops...I just lost a long post....later, it's time for dinner now.
Must be catching Evelyn.
LOL, Sharon, I was just writing to tell you that it sounds like a good coop for you. $100 per gallon, 128 oz per gallon? Let's see, I wouldn't mind helping you on that one if I were closer. Have to find small containers, Figure out how much per ounce, that isn't difficult, how much per container, and how much for shipping, Oh well, good thought anyway.
I got in on the Mychorrizae coop. Haven't seen a whole lot of results on that, still use it tho. LOL, don't tell Maggie. She is a doll. Then there was the Helebore coop that would have been a bust if it weren't for Sheryl, Pagancat. She managed to hold it together. Like a tiger. LOl
Forget it. Wrong time of year anyway. For most of us that is. A lot anyway.
Ha ha I am first this am:
Mary funny you should ask about the seeds. they arrived in the mail a couple of days ago. I had thought you might have just harvested more for me. I do deeply apreciate you collecting them for me.
Pyrthrum is an organic insecticide used for a number of pests. Home depot has started carrying a home safe lable of it. You might check it out if you are wandering around there at some time.
there is a lot of money to be made contract growing. be carefull with the contract though. I had a professor chat about his experience of growing for one buyer. their people came by to see how the crop was coming along and they droped the bomb on them. They politely told my professor that they would be paying X amount not the amount they were thinking they were getting for their geraniums. at that point you have 2 choices. Take the money and run or politly tell them where they can put their offer. He chose to sell to others as the profit margin was way too low for them.
The contracts will include color ,size of the plant, & penalties for being late. I like to grow on speculation as I can keep controll of my business.
Sharon are you wanting to develop new varieties, new colors or just have controll over your plants? you definately have the set up to do just about anything you would like to do. I have been drooling over the harris plug, liner and bare root catalog. They have about a dozen growers who they broker for. contact them if you are wanting to get a jump on next years growing season. they have a lot of different sizes.
well its back to bed for me. they have not turned the air on yet so I am feeling Looney.... wait isn't that aregular thing no matter what time of day it is. we will be on da road by 2:00... its grandbabies weekend
Dave
Where do you go to da grandbabies Dave? How far?
What were you doing up at 4:30 Dave? Way too early for any sane person. LOL, happens to all of us one time or another. No wonder you were first.
Bobs going to roast me some chilis today, and if it doesn't rain I might go down and pick the green tomatoes, pull some tomato plants, and clean up the area. Also, see how my garlics are doing that I planted. i.e. make sure nothing like cats have been digging in my garlic bed. I know they like that freshly worked soil. LOl Not funny.
Hi peeps!
I'm just taking a short break from clean-up of downed tree.
Some of you might find the contents of this thread interesting
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1067922
Dave, are you sure those Japanese Red Leaf maple (bloodgood) seeds just recently arrived in the mail .... or did you just recently noticed them amongst some old mail? I mailed them at the post office early in the morning on July 15th.
Well, time to get back to the clean-up.
MARY
Mary
Mary my niece handed them to me with the mail. they must have been in postal limbo. I really hate it when that happens. sometimes I think the postal folks pick a few pieces everyday and hide them for another crew to find. its kind of postal hide and seek....
Dave
Merry, what were we suppose to be looking for on that thread? Whatever it was it flew over my head and I missed it.
Sharon, how did Verrn's surgery go? Thought we might hear from you by now?? Hope everything is ok.
Nothing from anybody today. Where did you all go?
I went there and all I could see what propagation of iris seeds.
I have some and I need to get them in the ground. This weekend is going to be a lost weekend. But that is OK.
Vern did great but I did not get home until 5 pm. Walked the dog, got the mail, watched the news and then got on here.
He is on bed rest for 24 hours. Which should mean he should be ready to be picked up about 2:30pm. He will be happy to have an excuse to watch the baseball playoffs. Then on Sunday there is football. Oh my, between football and baseball that will probably be at least 10 hours a day for the next week.
I got some new toys today from the propagating store today. I will take photos tomorrow and post.
My neighbors, that I watch the cat for, are on their way to Europe. They will be back next Saturday.
I will check in tomorrow late. I need to clean house. It is a disaster.
sharon: propagation store? where is it??? how do we get to it???? I have a dollar burnin a hole in my pocket...lol
greetings from little rock
Dave
It is actually a hydroponic store. But they have EZ Cloners, trays, covers, pots and you name it they have it. I think most of the gardeners that go in there are growing pot. They have taken more space since the last time I was in there. The majority of the customers are Hispanic males.
Sharon that figuires. the number 2 product of mexico is pot. what is #1 you ask???? well cheap labor.... they will take a home and rent it out. fit every room with grow lights and all the dudads they can imagine. I wonder how much they produce from one of those homes? Oh well its why the cops keep hitting the sellers but it seems for every one they take out there are 2 more that pop up. while the rest of us honest folks are stuck trying to grind out a living,
The kids keep me spinning. everytime I turn around they want something else. Its great fun playing with them.
TTYL
Dave
OK Sharon, what are the new toys? You have a cloner, so it can't be that. You don't need lights, so it can't be that, Lets see, what else could you find there? Lotsa elixers etc. I have been there and can't imagine anything else there that you would buy.
Waiting.
Dave, those kiddies are going to be bigger and smarter than you are one of these days, then what are you going to do? You better stay one step ahead as long as you can.
Hello Everyone, Just finished helping my son in law plant 300 more daffodil bulbs in the field. Now we are finished. I hope that is all I decide to do. One day I will count how many we put in in 6 years. I try to put in 300 a year but sometimes it is less and sometimes more. We had stored them under the house for about two weeks because they would sprout with the warm weather. Of course today is warm again but the nights cool down.
We also took the shade cloth off the GH and now I had to put a fan on plus open the doors it got so hot in there when the sun came out. What a mess this weather causes The sun stays so warm I can not believe it.
Have lost track of all the chatter. I hope you are all o.k. and enjoying the good weather. How long it will last is a question none of us will every answer.
I have had a very trying couple of days. The son of an old friend of mine keeps calling because his Mother has terminal lung CA and she is doing weird things. They took her to the hospital two days ago. She has been telling me all along she has a plan that I would not approve of and she is going to do it before she dies. Of course I did not ask her what it was, I figured she would tell me if she wanted me to know. It turns out she completely took her son off the need to know list at the hospital and doctors office as well as made two money hungry women she made friends with her new Powers of Attorney. One is her sister who she has hated for years so she said. Whatever happened to make her hate her son is beyond me. I may have mentioned this before because it really upsets me. Of course he wants me to tell him what is legal in the State of NJ and I can only tell him so much. His attorney does not have an emergency number so he is really lost. I just hope he doesn't do anything stupid and messes up the first will she wrote because that one I know was good because I witnessed it when she signed it. Sorry, thinking outloud here. Nothing that would interest you all. Forgive me. I just think she has been used by these other two women or she has lost her mind to turn on her only son. Whatever will be will be.
Must get on y trusty mower and mow grass for a few hours. Take care and be happy. JB
Well, Vern is home from the hospital. First thing he did was take off the sling on his left arm Not suppose to use that arm. Well I have nagged until I am blue in the face so now it is not my problem. If he disconnects his wires to his heart I will call 911. Men are so stupid. Or at least mine is.
I did not get a photo today. Tomorrow. I checked my double blooming oleander cutting. I have 5 rooted. Dancing in the street. Now about 30 more to go.....Later.., Sharon
I
JB its sad when that happens to those we care about. as outsiders all we can do is listen and try to help if possible.
I spotted a sad thing this evening. I had to run to the grocery for some relish. when I parked I happened to glance down and spotted what are coin flips. one was marked $500.00 on one side and 18?? - cc . there were several of them there. what I think happened was someones children or a thief got ahold of someones coins and decided to buy groceries with them. what a waste as they are legal tender but worth oh so much more than face value. were they worth the 500.00 who knows but I am sure someone is sad and hopefully a cashier is very happy.
as you guessed I also collect coins as a hobbie. not so much these days but I do try to look out for the new hot items. right now the proof american eagle is going to be a good buy as they are not making any regular bullion coins. when they do that the ones produced can be extreamly valuable. Also the new and commemorative lincoln cents are something I put away for a long time from now. hopefully my grandbabies will see the rewards of my efforts. I have been trying to buy certified as near perfect as I can.
anyone else out there collect coins?
well its been a good weekend with the GB's... I am so worn out. more.... more.... more... lol It does keep me in shape.
well have a great evening
Dave
I am so glad they are taking for you. have you ever seen the oleander catterpillars? You should have a few good ones to plant soon. mostlikely next fall. be sure to wash your hands after working with them as they are poisonous.
I look forward to the pics
Dave
Really, maybe I can put some in Vern's salad. Can you tell h is on my list. He just put his sling back on. Guess he was tired of listening to me whine. I told him if he had a problem breathing, to be sure and let me know. Because that would mean he had dislodged the new wires to his heart and we would need to call 911.
You are wrong JB, that really does interest me. There is another thread under "retirees" on here where the woman all of a sudden got Alzheimers and her son has been on here asking for advice. Really sad, he is trying to take care of her as long as he can because she doesn't have insurance and he is sure that to get help she will lose her house that he and she are both living in.
Very sad what people go thru when they get older. And worse, for the people who love them. I thought I heard that Monday is a holiday too? Which would mean his atty is probably taking a long weekend? Not sure about that, Columbus day or something?
Wouldn't any will she makes after the first one override it? I would think so. And of course who would know she has another one? Only whoever she has witness it right? Bet you thought of all kinds of things when you got on that trusty horse of a mower didn't you?
Sharon, glad Vern is home and hope he doesn't do anything foolish to mess up his surgery. Maybe he just wants your attention?
Are you using your cloner to root them? How long did it take to get roots? I have had brugs in to root for 3 weeks and 2 of them have finally rooted. Straight bubbler.
Dave, maybe somebody was so broke they had to use their coin collection to buy groceries. But you would think they would have taken them to a pawn shop or something. That is sad. My son in law collects coins. Has for many years.
For some reason my computer didn't let me know you all were on here like it normally does and is suppose to. Oh well, a lot of newsies.
Have a good one. I
Hi guys, the thread was not watching though it was not unclicked for watching it. Glitch I guess. Also I have been doing a Memorial garden trade that has been taking what little extra time I have up and I got a foster puppy and have been trying to find him a home. He is so sweet and loving. He is 9 mo. old/Shar Pei possibly pointer mix. He is not big and looks about as big as he will be. Spent time at Pet Smart but I have not forgotten you all. Thought I better let you all know I was still kicking. Thanks for asking those who asked about me. I feel missed.
Morning Everyone, another day, another chapter in this mess that is unfolding with my friend..
I got a call from her son before I had coffee this morning. He has been calling constantly and finally got his attorney. His Mother and I have been friends for 20 years when she burned her house down and I was the Township Clerk/Board of Health Secretary of the town she lived in. I went to see her and found all her Russian Wolf hounds dead and in bags and they wanted to throw them in the dumpster...she was hysterical and wanted to bury them on her property. They needed my approval to do so. Of course I gave it and even supplied the Township crew to dig the holes, etc. Since then, she has been my friend. Having said that, She has a property worth millions of dollars that she and her son own jointly. She has a sister who now after many years has decided to step in and take over. Money is the root of all evil and there is so much evil going on here it is pathetic. I just spoke to my friend from her hospital bed and she is definitely being misguided by her sister and another so called friend. She has lung cancer and emphysema and the doctor told her son, yesterday, the emphysema has gotton much worse so they are not going to do any more cancer treatment and just keep her comfortable, which of course means she is terminal and it is just a matter of time.
Now that I know how she feels and that she is able to speak to me I can do what I can to make sure she knows who loves her and would care for her better....and who is not after her farm. This is so pathetic. God help them all.
It is nearly 11 a.m. and I have done nothing around this house except feed the dog and cats and open the greenhouse. The temp was 49 this morning and two hours later when the sun came up it was in the 90s ...totally impossible to keep the GH in any kind of steady temp. much less worry about the humidity. Maybe I will just go hide someplace and take my phone and bury it. LOL
I councelled families of terminal patients for years and it is so difficult when you are personally involved with the families. I have to be so careful not to let that cloud my thinking and good judgment. I am torn between both the family and the patient in this situation and I must keep the patients desires up and above anything else......if they are in fact HER wishes and not those someone else put into her head.
I am going outside and take a deep breath then come in and water the indoor plants.
Have a good day and pray for all of those people who are in worse situations than you are. God Bless. JB
Really tough situation you are in there lady. Wouldn't trade places with you in a million. So sorry when money tears families apart. Especially when there is enough for everyone. But for those greedy, there is never enough.
Sure glad he got hold of his atty. That helps some but still keeps the calls coming doesn't it?
Dawn, sure was nice to hear from you. Glad you got the little foster puppy. You will find a home for it.
Dave, that picture never came thru. Try again.
Sharon, how is Vern this morning?
Wet and rainy here so guess I will watch the football game and then roast and peel the rest of the chilis.
Have a good day you all. ttyl
Well, it is a beautiful day. High 80s and clear as a bell.
My account called first thing this morning and said she needs my taxes so that is what I am going to do today.
Vern actually went to bed before I did. Kept an eye on his most of the night. You know that drill. Like a new mother's ear tuned to the new baby. One time he was cold so I got an extra blanket but other than making some weird sounds in the middle of the night, he did fine. When I told him to make sure he let me know if he could not breathe because that would mean he had pulled out the wires to his heart, he put his arm sling back on last night. But this morning it is off again.
His daughter is coming on the 15th for a reunion. We will see her on the 15th and then no more. She can usually get him to do what he is suppose to do.
Jnette, he should not need attention. Everything I do everyday except gardening is done for him.
JB, my father-in-law was terminal and accused Vern's brother Fred of stealing from him. That would never happen. The situation you are dealing with is very sad but happens all the time. The son should have his mother declared incompetent so she can not change anything under duress.
Well, I need to get working on my axes. They are just about done so it will not take all day. Later friends.
Hi peeps!
Another beautiful day. A little brisk in the early AM .... I took advantage of it and was a busy bee outside.
It seems like it will take forever to have my property the way I would like it. But progress is being made ... slowly.
Started using the oven again .... stuff roast chicken .... will provide several meals.
Forecast is for rain tonight and tomorrow.
Sharon ... your cloning success is wonderful! So what new cloning doodads did you find?
Evelyn ....all I can say is grrrrrr in regards to your lost post.
Love to all
MARY
JB ..... approximately how many daff bulbs in all are now in your fields? What daff is your favorite?
Dawn .... welcome back.
Dave .... bet that picture is the cutest we never viewed.
Jeanette ..... I just thought using pvc was too much of a hassel .... could I not do something similiar with plastic or styrofoam cups?
Sorry Merry, you lost me again. Don't know for PVC, plastic, or styrofoam cups. Went back a week and can't find what we were discussing.
JB, maybe Sharon is right. But, if the lady is off of her meds now her mind will probably clear up. It is amazing what those can do to you. Been there, done that.
Jeanette ..... I was referring to the pvc concept discussed on the following thread.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1067922
Mary
Merry, you are talking about using this method for tomatoes or anything right? You could make them as deep as you like. Problem with tomatoes is you have to up-pot them. I suppose you could do it the same. Will have to think about this one. LOL, looks like it would probably work, but still a lot of work to transplant. Thinking of gardens, not necessarily perennials or annuals. flowers.
You see, the easier it is to plant the seeds, the more work you make for yourself down the road. : )
Jeanette, I really did not care for the pvc idea .... and I wanted other input.
So thanks bunches for your input ... thought maybe I could be wrong in thinking that is way too much to do.
MARY
Hey, tonight the Phila. Eagles Play San Francisco and I am torn. SF is my favorite west coast town and Phila is next door, now I think I will flip a coin.
I got thru today with only two phone calls from my friends son. Yahoo! Maybe some of this crap is sinking in.
I do hope so. There is so much more I can not discuss, I forgot there are some local people on this list and no way would I want to breech any trust that has been given to me.
Thanks all of you for listening. One day at a time.
Mary, I think there must be about 2000 bulbs in the field now. My favorite would be difficult to say. There are so many absolutely beautiful hybrids, when I cut them I mix the bunches to see what people will buy. Sometimes I just do one color. It is funny what people buy.
I planted one yesterday that smells like vanilla....can you imagine? We will see if it grows.
We cut down and dug out one of the tomato plants and it was over 6 ft. tall and about 4 ft wide. It was still providing us with small greenish tomatoes. The other two and the red bell pepper plants are still giving us good fruit.
I am about to leave eBay for good. Yesterday I had a sale for 3 small starters, that would cost $10.20 to mail Flat Rate.....eBay invoiced them and charged $9.30 shipping and postage. Shorting me 90 cents plus $1.00 S&H. I was furious and I would not reinvoice the person becasue they have already paid for it. The automatic billing caculated the postage incorrectly, not taking Flat Rate into consideration and screwed me but good. This is not the first time those auto invoices made errors. I waited 2 hours to talk to a customer service person and ask to have them turn off the auto invoice on my account. They can not do that. Bull crap...when I have to do a refund, it costs me and the buyer more charges. This is so frustrating, so I think I will take down the few things I have on eBay and tell them to shove their site until they become a little more seller friendly.
The person on customer relations had no clue what the hell I was talking about. On DG there is never a problem because they do not get into the shipping and handling charges it is all up to the seller. I would rather be here and sell less than there and put up with all the charges etc. there is just no end to that. Now, having said that, I am going to call it a day and watch the Football game on one channel and the Baseball Game with the Phillies on another channel.
I have a check up for my good eye tomorrow and it will be tired after tonight. LOL
Have a good night my friends. Love you all. Hugs. JB
JB I understand, something like that happened with my best friend who was in fact, my mom's age. I loved her so much. She had a step daughter who she raised since she was 7 or 8, that girl always felt she loved the other kids more because she was their biological mom. She suddenly came around, quit her job, when Phyllis was dieing at the end, just so she could take everything, get her money out behind her dad's back. She changed the locks so nobody could come in and did not invite anyone to the funeral, so her granddaughter had one, that she showed up to. She stole like an extra 8 thousand dollars before all was said and done and the brothers kicked her out, she said it was hers and she was taking it.
I wanted to have the nurse case manager for Elder Abuse, investigate her, but the brother said no don't, she is still my sister. I felt bad. I wanted to, but I left it alone. Sad. Your in a tight spot yourself.
That was the term I was trying to think of earlier Dawn, for JB, "elder abuse". Can't hurt to talk to them JB. I think that is one of the best things someone could come up with, but don't know how they do. Good or bad. Does anyone know anything about them? Dawn?
I used to enjoy the San Fran football team JB. Back in the good old days. I don't enjoy the games as much as I used to. Oh well. Didn't the Eagles pick up Vick?
Ebay has gone to the dogs too. I used to enjoy it. Don't even look any more.
For any of you who want a greenhouse, Harbor freight has their 10 x 12 on sale for $550. And there was a fellow on Gardenweb that told you how, step by step to install it so it ended up being a pretty good greenhouse.
If we didn't live in such a cold climate, plus if I had more sun in here, I would get one.
If I knew that I was staying here, I would get a smaller cargo container and have a lot of windows put in to make into a green house, windows and a slider with a little porch overhand out front so I could sit and relax with all the plants in the green house and hang a swing on it. They are not very expensive. We have a huge 40 ft one that is a giant shed, painted to match out house, it doubles as a wall in our yard too.
Good mornin:
I think its mornin. yes those freight containers can be a great thing if you have the room.
well we made it back from little rock last night. drove through a front and man I never knew that could happen. it was like someone threw a switch so I just tried to go to sleep. no luck and a bad night too boot. I am going to take it easy today.
the pvc looks like a good idea and could be pretty easy to do with a stop block and a chop saw with a fine blade. Just cut push it out of the way and cut again. of course the stop block could just be a line and just keep feeding pipe as you move down the row.
well got my new canna cataloge this weekend. looks like a lot of stuff sold out before they even got it back from the printers. oh well.
have a great day
Dave
Oh that always happens to me, if I want to order something it is sold out, usually the rose that I want.
Are you enjoying the weather yet Sharon? It has been more summery than our typical summer the last few weeks, yet the nights are almost all Fall-ish. The mornings feel like fall too, but the days have been warm if out in the sun. Still we are having a fall feel which we get screwed out of some years. How about you? My garden is all blooming, so I know my roses (The ones in the sun) are blooming and loved it. They struggled with blooms in the heat.
Dave reread the above post and maybe I missed some part of the conversation, but it did not make sense to me. Dave said, "(well we made it back from little rock last night. drove through a front and man I never knew that could happen. it was like someone threw a switch so I just tried to go to sleep.)"
I was wondering Dave how long a drive is that? I am assuming Kim does the driving? LOL, otherwise you would not be sleeping right? And, what is a front? Guess we are lucky. We don't drive at night and don't get into those.
The PVC wouldn't be so hard to do Dave and would save a lot of time, just that once planted you still have to deal with them when they are ready to repot. Then resell. Might be a good thing for you. Too much work for me later when they need taking care of when they are seedlings.
It sounds like you have your doubts about staying where you are Dawn? Are you thinking of moving?
Well, got things to do, so better get the week started.
It is Columbus day so can't mail anything today guys. Hopefully tomorrow.
I do think about it investment wise Jeanette, but H has the idea that if we move he wants a mover to move it all, he does not want to do it as his back and shoulder is jacked up.
We talk about it. My sister is hoping to get us out to Washington too one day. I have many things to factor in though as I said before with my kids and the two babies. There is not a lot of jobs there near where we could afford to live too, so if Greg went to a mine, it could work, but we don't want to be in a really cold area, with a long Winter, since he works outside. I could always work with the disabled as long as the town was large enough to support the population. I would like to get into more administrative work or Clerical work and less going outside work though, as I get older.
Another thing you need to look at Dawn, is the cost of living where you are against where you would be moving to. It sounds like you have as far as jobs, and housing go, but what about utilities, food, etc.
A big issue with us when I think about moving back to the Seattle area, is that if we were to be closer to stores, we would spend more. Right now, we are so far away from those that all of my spending is done on line other than groceries. LOL even some of that is. I just got that order of chilis from Hatch, N.M. (Have to try different things sometimes).
I know you are thinking shipping is so expensive. Yes, I agree, only if you weigh that vs gas and time to go buy these things then it might not be. All of that has to be taken into consideration.
I would agree with you H in my case also about paying a mover Dawn. I know they are expensive but in the long run it might be cheaper than a divorce. LOL
