Yeah...that's the beauty of winter.....still the time in between winter and summer is way too short, well at least this year it was. I think we had 3 or 4 weeks of spring...
Remember this on May 23rd? We did get spring-like weather in between but it was off and on.
Plant propagation part XXII based on my own experience
Brrrrrrr ..... I'm not ready for cold weather ..... I donned fleece line garb today .... rainy, wet and downright chilly .... but the grass is green. JB must be having a field day in her greenhouse.
A few weeks ago I took some cuttings of a butterfly bush to root to give to younger daughter next spring..... and they all rooted!! Some lost all their leaves but all have teeny tiny new leaves appearing on them.
I have a nice time googling the names of plants you post that are foreign to me .....Sharon recently posted purchasing pink lady cordelines .....wow Sharon .... you have good taste .... they are so pretty!

I told you I lost control. Well at least Dave and JB now have a resource for free cuttings so they can make some money and come to Vegas to visit.
I had a good day. Rained several times. The eastern part of the county got flooded. That is what usually happens when it rains in the desert.
I went to the greenhouse but forgot to take my camera. Dave &
JB, we have aphids in the greenhouse. How do you organically get rid of them. Had ladybugs but owner of the greenhouse set off a bomb to kill the aphids. Did not kill anything but the ladybugs.
Lee thanks for the flowers.
Evelyn, my high school reunion was a hoot. I was called hiper, tiny (I am not) and told I have grown into a fine woman.
I have to go to bed so nite nite.
Sharon.
WOW! WOW! WOW! Sharon!
It is going to take me some time to review your list!
I think you did go wild and left no stone unturn.
So sad about the ladybugs. I bet you feel like gasing the GH owner.
JB ...... still cannot drink our water ..... in addition those serviced by Trenton Water Works receiving similar warnings and restrictions.
Be back later....
MARY
That looks like Christmas Sharon! Looks like fun. Where did you order from? Those, the ones I could make out right off hand, would be houseplants in my area.
Sharon, what did I miss here? Did you just purchase all of those plants? I hope you are ready to keep them all inside, of course here it would be inside. What a great list. I had some of those jasmine but they died after the first year. They were all Logee plants too and good stock. Just did not have the proper humidity, etc. for them. The problem is, they all have different needs. I do hope you can raise them and YES I will take some cuttings anytime, except, I am not sure I can raise some of them with cuttings. I have had little success with any jasmine propagation except the Maid of Orleans. Others just die on me. LOL I do hope you have excellent success. FIngers are crossed for you.
As for the Acfids, wow, I have purchased some Nature's Insect Guard from Nature;s Lawn and Garden Inc. I do not know if it will work in the GH but I would think it would. Check it out and let me know if you have time please. I am swamped just now. I am doing the copy for the ads for the Christmas Tree Sale and getting the schedule for the ads to run, etc. so I am really out of time this week.
I also have had a few wild orders which make me totally crazy. One from PR and they wanted 4 Aimees shipped. I can't ship to PR because it would cost too much for inspections etc. So I had to explain that one. Another was an order for Maid of Orleans Jasmine to Texas but she wanted me to guarantee they would grow and after they go thru the stress of having all the soil removed, make the trip and God knows if she knows how to care for them as starters, I can not guarantee they would live, so I told her to find someone closer to her who could ship them in pots. I hate saying no to people, but what else can you do when they want things you can not provide.
Waiting for a Logee shipment to come. I forget what I ordered, so it will be a surprise.LOL Thanks for reminding me of the ladybugs. I need to order some more but I am half scared to do so since the last time I did that we had the blizzard that took part of the GH and I do not want that again.; .......later guys and gals. Love and Hugs JB
Good mornig everyone:
you did go crazy...good crazy but crazy. you should have a great start for selling plants from once the cuttings root out for you. Are any of them patented? if so do not... i repeat do not root cuttings and sell them.
as for aphid controll thats organic....Dawn dish washing soap in a sprayer. you might even mix it in with another type of organic pesticide. do a test mix in a bucket before you put the concoction in a sprayer. some mixes gum up and can ruin a sprayer. Also if you have not used a spray on a specific plant do a test spray to make sure you don't fry the plant. oleanders are tough so hit them with what ever you can.
Also the dawn soap will also kill the oleander caterpillar. its orange about 2 -3 inches long and has black hair like tufts all over its body. they can strip a tree bare overnight.
well its day 2 of shipping. I will check back later when I stop for a break. 41 this am can we say BRRRRR...?
last day of the freaking cold .... tomorrow lows in the 50's high's upper 70's to 80's now thats nice weather
TTFN
Dave
Sharon, did you ever try Al Tapla's spray? It is organic. Alcohol, neem, dawn soap, and water, I have pretty good luck with that. I think I have posted before so you may not want to try it, or maybe did and it didn't work for you. Anyway, it is just another one.
Too bad about the ladybugs. Didn't he know they were there?
Jeanette,. that is the same we use for Mealybug except I do not put the alcohol in with the neem. Those $%&**() mealybug came back on the hibiscus in the GH yesterday. I gave it a good washing and sprayed it. I do not think they got ahead of me. The gardenias are next to the hibiscus and that really makes me nervous. That should work.
I took a break to put the laundry over in the dryer and it is still raining. My jeep is at the shop getting a transmission oil leak fixed before it goes in for the new paint job.
Back to work. Later. JB
Jnette, do you have the formula for the spray? Busy and wonderful weather.
Dave, only one plant was patented and I notate it for your and my protection.
Love you all. Sharon
Sharon ...this is the recipe that was posted earlier ....I forget who posted it ....it works quite nicely
Al Tapla’s spray
1 pint rubbing alcohol
1 pint very hot water
1 tsp pure, cold-pressed neem oil
3-4 drops Murphy's oil soap
I am still enjoying looking at the pics of your latest plant orders .... nice selection.
It is rainy and I like rain .... but it is a cold rain ... I do not appreciate cold.
Mary
someone slap me for tryig to do as much as I did toady and yesterday...please please
I am wiped out.so if I am not here tomorrow you will find me rolling over and hitting the snooze button.
Dave
Good Girl Sharon. Watch out for those PP. I only have one in my entire place. Of course that is the one I would love to propagate just because it is a No No. I would never do that. Too darn honest I am.
Still raining, tired and hungry. Good night all. Hope your day was worth waking up for. Mine was. Hugs.
S M A C K ........................DAVE! You know better.
lol yes I do it was like close to 200 3.5" pots. I started shipping pot and all. to heck with the wrap each plant with paper towel. I recieved a box that way pots and all and they put the tray to hole the plants in the box also. Me thinks me getting to old for this crap. lol
I think I will wash up and go lay down
Dave ~ You are like a lot of us here; do too much then spend a week to recover. Yes, you DO KNOW BETTER!!
Sharon ~ Yes, I was going to suggest neem oil, but others already "beat me to the punch"! It looks as though you will have to get that cloner out and send some rooted cuttings next spring to Dave, Jeanette and JB.
I am cleaning out my closets now as I have neglected to do so and little fits me since I gained 15 pounds since January. I will be making a big donation to the local church and thrift stores for the clothes that I know I will never wear, and if I lose weight again, I can buy some new things. In the mean time, I need clothes that I can wear now, besides the regular jeans and t-shirts, though I have a couple of nice blouses that I wear to town. Most of my money goes down the gopher holes (plant, soil & seed budget) these days, so maybe this might be different.
...bye' for now....
~ Evelyn
Sharon, Merry has the ingredients right but there is a way to mix them and use them. Here you go:
Tapla’s recipe for bug spray
1 pint rubbing alcohol
1 pint very hot water
1 tsp pure, cold-pressed neem oil
3-4 drops Murphy's oil soap
Add neem & soap to hot water & shake well. Add alcohol. Spritz plants thoroughly, covering all surfaces - especially underside of leaves & leaf axils. Be sure to shake vigorously as you use the spritzer to keep the neem mixed with the solution. Works great - the neem oil renders all the insects it contacts unable to complete metamorphosis or reproduce, while the alcohol provides reasonable knock-down for current generations
I use this because there doesn't seem to be a period where you have to wait between uses. I might even use it a couple of days in a row if I see something might be moving on the plant. Maybe something I missed. I don't think any of the ingredients are so strong that it will hurt the plants.
Oh, after looking at it, I see it is ok, just bigger now. This was taken in July or August.
Let me know.
Yes, I can always use more. I will pay for thr postage.
Evelyn, my EZ Cloner is making roots for you also. But most of your plants already have roots and are in the holding garden. Just waiting for your two days of spring...LOL.
Merry and Jnette, thanks so much for the recipe. I just e-mailed it to my partner and he will make some up. Also have an expert, Las Vegas style, on greenhouses coming on Thursday to the greenhouse.
Dave, or should I say "David". This is your mother and boy am I upset with you. How many times are you going to do this to yourself before you learn your lesson??????. Now you know why my employees called me "Mother Winter".
OK, if a plant is patented and you clone it for your own use or a gift for a friend, is that wrong? And if it is, how will anyone know.
Weather today was again excellent. I got two jobs off my list. Only about 10 more to go. Weather was 73 but no rain. Tomorrow 76 and then up to mid 80s. That will be fantastic.

JB. do you drink Hot Chocolate?
Is there anyone on this thread that cannot eat outrageous chocolate imported candy. I just made a very important contact. That is all you need to know.
Later friends.
Good morning all:
yes I know better but I did manage to get it out and still have one next week. I am thankfull its only 20 plants and I can do that with my eye's closed.
I see where you ordered but where does the decimal point fall in the amounts? how big are these plants???
ok for patented plants. you are "SUPOSED TO NEVER DUPLICATE" without permission and/or paying the patent holder a fee to do so. they sell liscenses for that. as far as who will know welll???? I guess you will know and your friend will.
My grandfather came up with the same delima and came to a similar conclusion.... screw it. he turns 90 in january, still tend a garden and runs errands (scary to ride with him). he's verry active.
well its take it slow and easy day today. I need to do my chores and hmmmm play on the computer ???? yea thats it....
well have a great morning whats left of it....today 80's for the high
Dave
You are correct Dave, to take cuttings from a Patented Plant for fun or sale is absolutely not acceptable as far as I am concerned..........if it were o.k. there would be no need for patents. If you do cut one for fun, who knows down the road if the ID tag gets lost just what could happen. I prefer to be safe rather than sorry. I have no idea how they police those patents, but there must be a way or they would not have them to begin with. It is like a copyright...until it happens and you get caught you really do not know much about it.
Then again, who knows is right.....except I know and I need to live with myself. That is tough even under normal conditions. LOL
We had some sunshine today. First in 5 days. I am tired too, just finished doing some copy for magnets to advertise our trees and my eye feels tired. Think I will play on Facebook.....I have a bakery and a cafe so that is where I am going now. Hugs. JB
Oh, forgot to tell you, I got three new plants today from Logee's a plant called
Fagraea berteriana "Pus Keni Keni" another Gardenia jasminoides 'Yellow" and a Mandevilla laxa "Chilean Jasmine". They were all curled up and packed very tight. I took them to the greenhouse, repotted them and gave them a drink and they look like they have been here for months. Hope they thrive. Fragrant Gardening is my favorite.
Well, we have a gorgeous day, the first and last according to the weatherman. So, I have a bed all weeded and ready for my hostas Dave. Now I am in a quandry. There are 4 hostas you sold me last spring in there all rooted etc. BUT, I want to add some other things i.e. composts etc. to it and build it up. So, do I unplant the ones that are in there and replant them once I have the additives in? If I don't I am afraid they will get covered up because there will be more of everything in around them.
Dave???
edited to add: This is the bed I want to heel my hostas in for the winter.

Well our weather is in mid 80s and absolutely beautiful. I am getting ready to go to work. OK, I understand and I will not clone anything licensed.
Phoenix is under tornado watch. According to friends on SW forum, they had one yesterday. Destroyed many gardens.
OK, cold weather experts, I have three tropical plants in my holding area. They have thrived and tripled in size.
CLERODENDRUM QUADRILOCULARE- STARBURST BUSH
Thevetia peruviana -Peruvian oleander -MEDIUM
OK, if I leave them in the holding garden, what do I do. Or should I move them to the greenhouse.
My mow and blow guy are in a battle. It is amazing. He is here today with three trucks and they are working like ants. I am not upset about my landscape because i do the majority of i. But the neighbors I switched to him are a disaster. I met with a new company and will probably move all 9 houses November 1. The landscape promised to hire to of the guys. One just had as baby and the other has similar problems. They promised, so I feel much better about moving the houses., Again, Mother Winter.
I want to know how to get a license to clone double blooming oleanders. I will Google it and find out. It is when I get ideas like this I wish I was 40 and had the money I have today.
Later. Got to get DH to a blood test for implant on Friday and I have roses to take care of because they are getting ready to bust into bloom.
uhhhg @#$#@ lost all I wrote....
Jeanette:
if you are going to move the hostas already planted I would leave them be untill you are ready to move them or next spring. they have a good root system and I don't see any reasone to stress them so late in the season. I would maybe through down some osmocote around them just for grins.
now the new ones are a whole different ball of wax. go ahead and amend the soil and plant them.
if you are not going to move those that are already planted can I ask why you feel like you should amend the soil for them? I know its a good idea to mulch and let it absorb into the ground. I am not sure about working in compost by uplifting the whole plant. is it possible to work in some compost arround the plants?
ok patents
you are about to crawl into a whole different mind set of people. after about 20 min. my head was spinning and did not really want to know all that much detail on the specifics of the genetics of the plant. I have a few links to check out below. the 1st site is the dept of ag where you patent a plant and you can look up plants by patent # ....I ....think???
http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/plant/
http://www.pwbreeders.com/about/
http://www.nurseryman.com/resources/patents.html
Please fill us in on what you find. I am curious as to what a production liscense would cost. I know it varies but its only so much per cutting some $0.02 others a lot more.
Dave
I forgot who ask me, but I just remembered...No, I do not drink hot chocolate, chocolate milk or anything like that. I am a water, tea, coffee, fountain coca cola, gin and wine drinker. One of each is my limit on normal days. Not wine and gin ...one or the other.Sometimes no alcohol at all. I dislike drunks, even happy ones.
Time to get ready for bed. Nite all. Hugs, JB
I
Dave, I only wanted to add the compost to the bed at this time because I was going to put new plants in and thought it was a good time to do it. The established plants would have been fairly low in the bed, but I suppose by the time the soil settles it would be a moot point. Guess I will leave them an plant around them.
I think as a hobby the licensing Sharon, would be too much trouble. It would be different if you were a business. I think you have enough on your plate. Go take care of Vern's pace maker. Forget the plants for a day.
LOL, JB, I was not the one who asked but if I was drinking all of the above, I would be in the bathroom the rest of the time. That must be where you get your energy. You forgot orange juice, my favorite.
I'm with you on the drunks tho, think it is our age??? lol No tolerance.
Jnette, I am a woman. I can do at least 3 things at one time. But Friday and Saturday I will be concentrating on
JB you drink Coke Cola and I drink Pepsi. I drink Vodka, you drink Gin. I have not had a drink close to three months. I like hot chocolate during the winter. I have coffee maybe once a week. I do drink tea but I go for months without any and then have some every morning for a month. I do drink a lot of water. That is what I am drinking now. Water with ice. When I am done with the water I eat the ice. Then I refill the glass and start again.
Friday and Saturday will be Vern's day. He goes in at 11am on Friday and comes home around 2pm on Saturday.
Also granddaughter Sarah has homecoming so we are invited for the photos. They always look so pretty, you cannot miss the photo taking session. Part of the fun being Grandma & Grandpa.
All the neighbors that I have contacted today are moving with me to the new landscaper. Six so far. And the new company is going to hire the young man that helps me on the weekend. That is great news for him.
We had a vacant home broken into down the street. It backs on a street not in the complex. They came over the back fence and stripped the entire home. All appliances, all light bulbs, all door knobs, cabinet knobs and all faucets. They tried to take the windows in the back but were not successful. The Realtor called me because sh knew I was on the board. I was a mess. I had been in hole in the rose bed getting rid of a large root from a street scape tree or my Mimosa. Cannot tell which one yet. I actually hope it is my Mimosa because it will be easier to control.
I do not drink much and when you go to a cocktail party, drink sparkling water and then watch everyone go over the cliff, one at a time, that is enough to convince yourself not to drink. If I do drink, it is at home. Vern & I never drink and drive, only if it is one drink. But I agree with Jnette. It is amazing how much smarter we get the older we get.
Dave, thanks so much for the info. I will read it while I am waiting for Vern tomorrow. I made sure they had wireless for my computer. I got rid of my wireless when I did my budget review. $50 for something I used occasionally used was, in my mind, very stupid.
I will look up heeling in plants and see if that would work here.
Later Friends. No answers yet on chocolate candy....Sharon
Just wanted y'all to know dave and trish whitington had a healthy baby boy this afternoon.
;)
Great news.
Chocolate candy is another story. Being raised so close to Hershey, PA we were Hershey Kiss kids and any other candy bar they make. I love chocolate candy. I also treat myself each winter to Linda's Lollys....they are gournet lollypops and expensive but worth it. I love to suck on one of those when I watch TV at bedtime. I buy a case of them. I think there are like 36 in a case. All sorts of tasty stuff, lemon lime pie, choc. cream pie, grape, mint, all kinds of fruits, just so yummy ...you should look up her website. Google Linda's Lollys in NYC.
I also am a great Pa. Dutch Pretzel eater. I have them delivered 5 lb at a time individually packed here at the house. They come from Hammonds Pretzels in Lancaster , PA and they are to die for.
Must go, JB
jb how big are the pretzels? I love the big ones you get at the fair or some of the home and garden shows we get here. could you mail me a pretzel???? media mail???? as you can see I am a bit off my rocker today and being silly so please don't take offense... I warned you ... read at your own risk .....
well I did manage to get a few things done today. I bought 7 more bags of the decomposed granet. my step son moved them for me and then I spread them out. I need another 5 bags at least so that will be 17 bags. Its coming along pretty good I just have a couple of squishy spots .....hmmmm lol that could be read wrong??? see I did warn you
we have been in the mid 80's today and they are even saying possible 90's in the next week. I have a funny feeling I am going to have a bumper crop of JM's this next year. I picked 1/2 a zippy bag full of thread leaf red jm in oregon. my father-in-law lives next door to a home in forclosure so I raided the tree. my mother-in-law was right there helping me pick seeds. she even harvested a volunteer tree for their rent house in albany, OR.
They had this small tree (20') that had the most fragrant flowers on it. the leaves smelled like peanut butter when you rub them in your hands. kinda cool. I think it was a clerodendron but I am going off memory and we all know about daves more recent memory. I am ghreat with all the old memories but the newer ones are hit and miss.
OK now back to our regularly schedualed show ..... I just harvested a zip lock sandwich bag of blood good type Jm seeds. now we aren't talking kinda full. its bulgeing and I am afrade to zip it shut because it might not close. oh and get this there are more on the tree. Yippie..... Now to get my niece on the roof harvesting those. I am thinking I will try to sell them as a rootstock for grafting. something like 100 seedlings for $25.00. how does that sound? am I way off base and asking too much?
I will follow jb's cue
Must go, Dave
The Lantanas here are loaded with seed. Some are green and I do know that they are not ready but what about shiny black. Should I harvest them and then put them on a flat surface to dry. I am sending them to you guys so let me know what is best. Yellow & orange and my rose & yellow. They are both new breeds. The birds are going to start eating them, I think....
I am going over to the greenhouse at 2pm and if I do not do a "Dave", I will remember my camera. LOL. What is really sick Dave, is we all understand you perfectly. You are no different than the rest of this crazy bunch.
I never did get an answer about my tropical plants from yesterday.
Later.
JB, all those flavors you listed were suckers??? Hmm, pretzels huh? I have never had any of the big ones like Dave is talking about. Are they soft ones? I have heard of those. Never tried any.
Sharon, on the tropicals. I am not an expert, but do they normally freeze to the ground and start over in your area? If not, I would put them in the gh. It is really hard for us northerners to help you with tropicals.
Dave, what is decomposed granet? What are you using it for? Would you take a picture of it for me? thanks. Dave, that is only 25 cents each for those seedlings. I don't know what the going rate would be for them.
Sidney, that is pretty cool about Dave's wife having a baby. They have a couple of kids already don't they? New ones are always nice too. LOL
Sharon, would love to have some lantana seeds. I don't think you are suppose to dry them, but what do I know? The last time I planted some they didn't grow. Didn't germinate. Don't let the birds have them. Yes, black is ripe.
OH, BTW JB, I love ordering stuff like that thru the mail. Especially if it is new. (to me) Just like now, Bob should be bringing me home from the post office some green chilis I ordered from Hatch, New Mexico. Suppose to be so great. I am going to love playing with those. Will have Bob roast them on the BBQ and then we'll peel them and freeze them, what we don't use right now. If any of you are interested I will give you the web url for them.
ttyl
OK, I will go on line and find out about lantana seed. There are a bunch of bright shiny plump black seeds. I will have to put them in a small box because in an envelope they will get smashed.
JB, are those pretzels the doughy one that you heat up or are they crispy?
Those Hatch Peppers are all over town here and in the Phoenix area. They even have set ups outside the grocery stores to roast them for you. I had never heard of them before this year.
Jnette, what do you do with the peppers after you roast them.
As for the tropical, this is their first winter, so I do not know. I am going on line for that answer also.
The greenhouse expert came over and met with us on the aphids. He brought mum oil. He says it works wonders. He also said the air was not circulating enough. He gave his time because my partner from the landscape company buy truck loads of plants from. He grows whatever they request, down to colors.
Have a great evening and day tomorrow. Later friends.
Hi peeps!
It was a beautiful day here ....I spent the majority outside tending to yard work.
My grandson decided to cut down large tree outback .....I have been helping with the clean up by cutting up the smaller branches .... just stopped a few minutes ago ... looks like it will take all day tomorrow to complete the clean up.
I am pooped ..... a piece of chocolate right now would be oh so nice .... but since I have none, I'll have to settle for a nice long soak in the tub .... think I'll add some epson salt.
Dave, I sent you a considerable number of Japanese Red Leaf Maple seeds back in the middle of July. I was down on my hands and knees, crawling in the grass, to collect them for you. Did you ever locate them?
Sharon .... I have only review a few pictures of you recently ordered plants .... you really did order a lot .... what I have viewed so far is extremly pretty.
MARY
Yes Mary, I did order numerous plants. But that is when you pant in the Southwest. They just sit in the ground and form great roots. The tops of the plants grow very little. When the warmth hits, they take off. My mother always referred to my landscape as the "instant garden".
But that is why I am on this thread. Trying to learn from this group how to develop my own plants.
