Tremendous new's to read here Dave. We will try our best to behave on the BINPS website when you become Moderator;-)
Sure look's like corn at this stage to me to Lynnie. Who is Malachai? I missed something somewhere.
Kassy, whishing you fun at work.
Moon, doing well here and hope you are too. It's going to take me a little bit to get caught up on the Slug thread......geesh, I have gotten way behind!
Hope all are having and has had a tremendous day.
Rachel
Is There Ever Too Much of Luping's Basil?
Hi ya, Rachel. Malachai is from The Children of the Corn., a horror novel turned movie series by Stephen King.
watch the movie, you'll never look at a cornfield the same way again! lol
Not a fan of the horror genre myself, Rachel.
neither am I, I'm sure a boyfriend talked me into it.
Looking to be the hero and protect you no doubt....grin
I'm trying to get in the groove with you girls. Bought a pretty pot of Sweet Basil today, also 2 small pot of cilantro. Got coliflower, cabbage, broccoli, and eight tomatoes to plant. Now to find time before they die.
Oh boy...pesto and Mexican food and stir fry...way to go Jim.
I don't remember anything about the movie but corn stalks creep me out now lol
Jim how do I get whiteflies off my corn?
1 gal of water laced heavily with ivory dish washing liquid. Get the underside of the leaves. Got any malathion throuh in a capful of that.
thanks! I don't have any malathion but I'll do the dish soap thing...kids are interested in the corn. They never saw the movie, though!
my African basil is still going like crazy.
Think I am gonna call it a night....have a sweet sleep everyone. Ican, sorry I missed you. I'll catch up tomorrow.
Night, Lynnie, Jim and Rachel. Talk tomorrow.
g'night Moon (haha didn't realize till I said it)
Never tried the alcohol but will give it a shot. White flies are pesky little buggers and hard to keep away. I had never seen them really hurt anything very much until this year and they completely killed part of Jo's purple verbena.
LOL! I'm always getting online when everyone is going to sleep. Time differences...sigh.
Well here is a crappy picture of my new Spindle Palm I just had to bring home because it's well, fabulous. And hey! It was free! Of course as I was folding down my back seats and moving my front seat as far up as it would go wondering if I'd be able to get the back hatch closed (and remember I have a 4runner) I began to wonder about my sanity. However desire is a powerful motivator and indeed I managed to fit that baby in. :)
I had another sanity questioning moment when I dragged into my place (even my neighbors took note when I lugged it out of my car) but once again I had to have this palm so something was gonna get moved or whatever to fit it.
After shoving my living room furniture around and surveying, then moving, etc., for I have no idea how long I realized it would be fine if I just moved my love seat out about a foot from it's original position. Ugh.
SO I moved everything back and now get to go look for a stunning pot to match such a fabulous plant. Of course I really just enjoy shopping for stunning pots but you know how it goes.
Lynnie you are too funny about the corn. I saw children of the corn. Maybe that's why I like to include stalks in my halloween decor...bwahahahaha!
Jim, I have a friend who has one of the little counter plant growers. Forgive me but I can't recall the name of those stupid things (I say stupid in a nice way, I want one really bad) but it is SO cool! She has all sorts of flowers in it and you can grow herbs too. That way they won't die this winter. I drool on it religiously. If I could move some plants off my counter I could probably find room for one. Working on that. You should look into it.
Oh wait, here it is, it's the AeroGrow AeroGarden. Check it out and see if you can figure why I haven't bought one yet LOL! Other than counter space I mean :)

Hi Ican, does the palm have a blue crownshaft?
K better picture, the other was to attempt to show how close to the ceiling it was but really it's just a crappy picture. And yes there is a rubbermaid container in this picture. It's sorta embarrassing but I put it there to take to my shed when I moved in and my dog started using it as a look out for the window. Since he often uses it to watch me leave when I go to work I am a lush and leave it there.
No blue, just orange.
Speaking of spooky and corn, anyone have any good Halloween shots? I know, I know, it's early, but with the Rocky Horror reference and corn it got me thinking.
always wanted to give a kick a halloween party in my garden in WA but I didn't want da drunkards to trample or, ahem, "water" my plants (blush). I had a good narrow back yard and side yard for it though. Someday :)
I used to decorate the heck out of the front of my house though. In my last neighborhood I would wear a costume for the kids too. I was one of the only houses in our neighborhood to decorate so all the kids would check it out. It was lots of fun.
One Halloween my next door neighbor came by with her 5 year old. She was already scared from coming down the covered entry (kids are scared so easily aren't they?) when my ex answered the door. She was so freaked out. Sadly my ex called me to come to the door to put her at ease and I had just finished making myself look freaky for the other kids. I thought he called me there for entertainment value so I jumped out with a big "raaaaa!" Ya that pretty much did it. I think we terrorized her for life poor thing LOL!
Could you show a close-up of the fronds and leaflets. It does not look like a Spindle Palm, Hyophorbe vershaffeltii.
Will do! I'll do it tomorrow with my camera rather than my cell phone, and with better light. Was told it was a Spindle Palm but proper ID would be great! :)
Just a guess, but maybe Raphia farinifera, the Raffia or Flour Palm.
Have a look at some other photos of Hyophorbe verschaffeltii. The above picture that you found online does not look right for the species.
I just looked at a young Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, Bottle Palm, and it looks a lot like the photo.
I'll take some pics of the base and fronds tomorrow, that will help.
Lovely plant though! Absolutely the focal point of my living room, of course it's approx. 7' tall LOL! It's by my front door though. Not sure how that will go in the winter, which is coming fast. I may have to rearrange again.
All I can say is it's a very good thing I'm a bachlorette with no one to complain. My dad about fell over when he walked in. My son wasn't surprised (good boy). The pic. shows in the background my only sunny window. I only have a Ficus Alii & Glauca in that one with a Philodendron Congo Rojo & a Spathiphyllum Domino at the base & a very thin rescued Dracaena Warneckii is visible. I don't have the heart to chop it down for new growth. The other wall, my kitchen and office are packed. I admit that when I placed that baby (the palm) I began to wonder if I'm like one of those cat ladies with 100 cats running around the house. Hmmmmm. When do you have too many plants?
you never have too many plants.
Halloween here is a almost a holiday, Ican. House decorated, smoke machine going, costumes, big pot of soemthing creole on the stove, (now that I know what I'm cooking)
We usually get 100 kids or more, depends.
That palm is huge!
Congrats on the new baby Ican. Naahh, it only gets weird when the plants start talking to you.....like the corn....telling Lynnie to save it from white flies....teasing , Lynnie.
Samhain has always been my favorite Holiday....unfortunately, that isn't so with the neighbors....they turn off their lights, or even leave til TorT is over..11 homes on our end of the road and only one with lights....sad. GSJordan is officially too old to partake in the sugar rush...
When my oldest son was 16, he dressed as a scarecrow and sat out front with a big bowl of candy on his lap with a signe telling Treaters to help themselves, but not be greedy. Most kids would take a handful and move on and as they moved away he would wish them a Happy Hallowe'en without moving...spooked them a little and added to the excitement...one kid about 8 or 9 came up with his mother who read the sign and said" Nobody's out here just fill your bag and let's go" After the kid took his first handful and reached for more, James caught him by the wrist and said "Don't be greedy, one handful to a customer"
The kid started screaming that something had him and his mother took off running down the street alone.....leaving the kid in the clutches of the Boogun.....so much for motherly love and mama tiger instincts...DHJim and I were sitting on the porch laughing at first, then apalled at her reaction.
James and I calmed the kid and DHJim went after the mother....who had wet herself mid-flight and came back with curses and law suit threats....The kid was laughing and saying it was the best Hallowe'en ever.....I still can't believe the mother ran away and left the kid to whatever fate awaited him. An hour later a police officer showed up, heard the story from us, laughed and said he wondered how she would have explained wet clothes and no child if it had been a real Boogun...of course she didn't tell the officer any of that when she filed an assault complaint...which the officer trashed along with a dozen or so snicker wrappers....grin
Wow what a great mom. Like you said, so much for mama tiger instincts.
My son always wanted to do the candy bowl thing.
It seems that no one trick or treats where I am now. Safety stuff, everyone goes to malls or functions etc rather than door to door. Ah well.
So far my plants haven't started talking to me so guess I'm safe for now :)
Maybe I should plant some corn...
Dave, I saw your Lambric beer at the store the other day and eyeballed it. They only had the cherry version in a small bottle so before I invest in the rather large steroid bottle of raspberry I wanted to double check the flavor :)
I had a raspberry ale at a local pub and it was a lot like drinking raspberry jam, a bit too sweet. I've had some really really good ones though.
So what's the best description here? Is it bitter at all? I tend to lean toward stouts, browns, and ambers and not like IPA's or German beers. Have you had the cherry version before?
Waiting for word to see if I want to try this baby!
LOL, I love the Halloween stories........Cute!
And Ican, I checked out that AeroGrow AeroGarden..........awwwwww, come on, it's on sale.................LOL
You could learn to balance the computer on your knees and put the AeroGrow on your desk....grin....it si on sale, afterall....LOL
LOL, your lucky he wasn't trying to eat it.
I got one that I have to watch..........she likes my BF Parlor Palm...........and I mean to eat, a piece here and one there.
Oh I know he was dreaming of it, the drool running down his chin gave him away. He get's the no thing. We went through all that while he was "innocently" sniffing the leaf and looking sideways at me. You know the cat look. So far he's being the perfect kitty and just adding to his jungle cat collection. We'll see how next week goes while I'm at work though ;)
The claw marks on the ceiling will be a dead give away....grin "Who me? No way! Purrrrrrr"
