Garden Photos of '09.... #14

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Lovely photos. Makes me look forward to what our garden may look like in a few weeks. The tulips are just barely coming up here, as well as the huechera. Our lilacs still have very tightly closed buds. Nothing has a leaf on it yet. But I know that soon enough, it will all burst forth in great beauty.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I agree, great photos! Everything is waking up here, just a bit more slowly than the rest of the world. ^_^

Both cornelian cherries in bloom, one in a more shaded place--flowers before leaves.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I bet thats pretty! Is the one in more shade darker in coloring than the other?

Dyane.... I love that Narcissus Suzy. Did you get a little dirty getting that angle on the shot? :-p I'm not sure which anemone it is that you're wondering about, so I'll give you both.

Purple anemone: Anemone coronaria 'harmony mix' ----as best as i can tell, this is the same as Anemone 'De Caen'

White anemone: Anemone numerosa 'Alba Plena'

Very nice---loved the hellebore in particular. Shelley---is the heuchera 'Stoplight'? It's very pretty. Here are some of my bloomers---split-cup daffs.

nice shots you three!!!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the ID, Shelley. It was the white one but I love them all. As for Suzy, I was trying to avoid having my house fill in the entire backdrop so I shot it from the worm's view!

Today I got some new shrubs planted but I am feeling a bit out of shape. Guess I need to ease back in to Spring.

My Almond tree is beginning to bloom...

I had no idea an almond would look like that... it's beautiful

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

My almond just has tiny fluffy pink blossoms. What is the diameter of those beauties??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Those are the redest blossoms I've seen. What are you feeding that luvly tree Dyanne?

Don't worry Dahlia we closed up real tight before the snow whomp.

That's so EXHAUSTING! When does that white junk stop for you? (well, by April it's white junk, talk to me in December when it's pretty again).

Thanks, Dyane, for the compliment on my pictures. I did cheat a little, though. My camera has a setting for cloudy/overcast light, which is good for shade as well. It warms up the colors in shade and overcast lighting and makes them look more natural. I have also discovered, at least on this new camera of mine, that it improves my pics taken in sunlight as well. I discovered this on my recent trip to Texas. I was getting disappointed with how 'washed out' the colors looked in the pics I was taking in bright sunlight. I played around a little and found that by setting it on the overcast light setting that it mad the colors in the bright sunlight look much better.

Here's an example. Here is a pic I took in Texas on the automatic setting. I tried fixing it in my photo program on the computer, but it still does not look good to me.

We always have a dump/deep freeze late April sometimes May (eek). I'm very happy drumlin that there is snow. It's brutal on the emerging perennials when there is a deep freeze with no snow insulation.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Now here's one taken with the camera on the overcast light setting, which acts as a warming filter.

Quite a difference!

Actually, here's a better example. This one was taken on the automatic setting.

BTW, Dyane, beautiful hellebore. Congrats! It was a long wait, but worth it. I have a seedling I bought last year, so I will be waiting a long time for that one to bloom.

Great pics, everyone! You guys have some nice flowers there!

Karen, I just got a new camera for my birthday in February. I haven't even begun to fiddle with all the settings. I'll look for that one. Good tip.

As for the Almond tree, I inherited it with the house. Last year I tried to ID it here on DG without much luck. No one seems to have ever seen one with such dark flowers. The blooms are about 2 or 2 1/2 inches across. I know it's definitely an Almond. There is only one in the yard but it does produce nuts. It is really beautiful. Here is the Almond

Great shots all! Congrats on the almond, Dyane.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Dyane is this by any chance your daff that you called your "cream puff" http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Narcissus%20'Erlicheer'&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi it's Narcissus Erlicheer It's very cute! Brent and Becky's has them. There's another called spring cheer offered mostly by Brecks that was pretty similar too.

Robin... the Heuchera is Green Spice. the veining fades as the leaf gets older.

Dahlianut.... Beautiful pictures! too bad the snow is still there (ok... good for the deep freeze, but better without both!!)

Its a pretty nice conservatory for a med size city.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

definitely looks lovely! Where is this at? you probably mentioned it above, but i missed it.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Lamberton Conservatory Rochester NY.
I was disapointed yhis year. After being on DG for a year and seeing a multitude of growing things from all over the states I was let down.
I have also been to Longwood Gardens in PA. everything pales by comparison.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I went to a arboretum in Morristown... I was disappointed as well ... we went for a spring plant sale.. the prices were incredibly high... and the plants were tiny

Beautiful house

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

here it is.
This is the best view. Olmstead designed many of our parks as well as Central Park in NYC.
We are fortunate to have them.

Now I know why the conservatory was such a disapointment, the county is responsable amd they have laid off so many people no woner it looked like there wasnt enough money for outdoor tulip displays.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

in my mind the nice website reflected what we would find there.... not even close
