It warms up the colors in shade and overcast lighting and makes them look more natural. I have also discovered, at least on this new camera of mine, that it improves my pics taken in sunlight as well. I discovered this on my recent trip to Texas. I was getting disappointed with how 'washed out' the colors looked in the pics I was taking in bright sunlight. I played around a little and found that by setting it on the overcast light setting that it mad the colors in the bright sunlight look much better.

Here's an example. Here is a pic I took in Texas on the automatic setting. I tried fixing it in my photo program on the computer, but it still does not look good to me.
