She's about to.....#39 Brug Addicts Chat

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Morning everybody!

Grab the coffee while it's hot. Also a box of them think they was called weeding cookies or somethign like that. Forget who metioned them, but saw a box in the store yesterday when I picking up some groceries and got a box. Sure they not as good as yoru homeones but somethign for ya all nibble on.

So cold out and woke up late and now having to do a mad dash to get ready and out the door. This week and next gonna be a wild ride. I love learning, but really dislike finals weeks. People my age that have enough gumpshun to goback to school should be exempt from tests and especially finals. LOL

Shoot half the time I can hardly remember what I was doign or gonan do let alone everything I supposedly learned all semester. Any volunteers to type my research paper? It only 35 pages long. Will probably take me longer to get all my deslexic typing errors and them common slang words out that it will to type it.

Been looking at the cinnamin ornament recipe. Can ya eat them too or are they just for decoration only?

Didn't see no flour in the recipe so still can't figure out how they stick together. Can ya tell I not a baker. LOL

Have agreat day everybody, gotta dash, cold and dark out and hopefully the deer will stay out of my way today. : )

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone, please don't rush toom uch. We don't need you having any accidents on the way. Good for you going back to school. I did not know that, but so glad to hear it. My parents tried to go back to school at the age of 53. They grew up as migrant workers, and never got to finish school, so once all of us kids grew up, and were on our way, they went back. It was the best thing they did.

Hey all! A wonderful day here, but cold and windy...Not much going on, but I still haven't finished the Christmas decorating. Anjl, hope your son is better today, please let us know what you can as soon as you feel like it....We are all concerned for him, and you...{{{{HUGS}}}}

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi All, qick note... I am off to see my son in just a few minutes! I cant wait!!!! hopefully they will have some answers, I doubt it cause its a county hospital (no med ins) but we are rectifying that by enrolling him in college so I can add him to our insurance plan....then get him in a private hospital where he will get much better treatment :o) lol!

I am hoping to get these ornaments done in a few minutes and drop them off at the po on my way to see him, if not, I will just mail them individually tomorrow.

I see my doc tomorrow afternoon, so will have a better idea of when my surgery is scheduled. :o) yipeee!!

(Zone 7a)

Still sending Happy Thoughts your way!!!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

dont automatically discount the county hospital.. I work(ed) at one... the patients without insurance actually got better care ... no insurance company telling the dr's what they could and could not do. It was also a teaching hospital which makes a difference.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Tammie that's the exact way it is at Dallas, Texas' biggest and best trauma hospital, Parkland. That is where they take every jailhouse inmate, trauma, gunshot, knifewound, etc. victim, and is well known for it's treatment of the poor with no money even though it loses millions...There was a big scandal last year of people (with money and without) from other states lying and saying they lived in Dallas and going there for free care. It is also a teaching hospital. Anjl I hope if your son stays there he will get great care. Any word on the test results yet?

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

As a nurse working in a county hospital.. it is very frustrating to see your tax dollars being spent with the best care possible to illegals and care being skimped on to those with insurance because the insurance will not pay for it.. I have seen it time and time again... it drove me crazy and made me so very angry! The uninsured patients always got the better medical care and the illegals got longer care because they had no place to go so could not be discharged to home.. they stayed in the hospital longer! Go figure!

I finally got a few more rooting brug cuttings potted.. I am officially out of room for them and have 9 more in the bubbler needing to be potted. They are the lareger ones I bought and are too big to go into cups.. they need to go into pots. Mom is offering to put them in her greenhouse but she does not keep it warm enough at night.. only in the 40's.. I think my cuttings need it warmer than that. What do you all think?

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Well.......I like to keep my greenhouse at 50 if I can, but if you think about it, Brugs are safe outside to a low of about 40 outdoors...so I THINK they should be all right....I would like to see 45 at least, but think they might still be okay.....

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

40's are OK for growing established plants and keeping them over winter.. but these are rooting cuttings just getting started.. I want to keep them a bit warmer. I don't want to risk losing those... each is unique for me.. only one of each kind. I am considering going through some of mine and maybe trusting her with a few of my duplicates.. but those are not the ones taking up so much space... LOL... of course not! If cuttings are giving me a space problem.. what am I going to do next winter? Well... established plants are easier to place.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Tammie, are you running out of pots or just space?

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

I found some ickies today! My Cassie's Curl that withered and rotted was in a pot...when I threw the plant out I started looking at the soil and saw these wacky deep tan/orange larvae scattered across the top of the soil. As I dug deeper, I found the soil saturated in them, all the way to the bottom. Popped a few in my fingers, just squish came out...They were about the size of a piece of rice. I posted on the Garden Pests ID forum and haven't recieved an answer yet.....Any ideas what these might be? It was only the one pot in the entire greenhouse that had them. The soil was fresh new Miracle Grow potting mix. There were no live bugs anywhere to be found, only the larvae.

Tammie, you should see my guest bedroom. I can relate. I keep adding tables by the windows and keeping the florescent lights on them. A few are starting to leaf out quite alot. They are in pots but I can't bring myself to put them in the workshop. They are only 8 or so inches tall. I have only 3 cuttings rooting in moss left. I have 3 pots for them but will be real tight on space under the lamps.

I also have some seeds coming that I will try to germinate. It never ends. But if it did, what would I do?

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

out of space.. I bought a bunch of after halloween small black buckets for .25 cents each.. got about 20 of them.. they are a great size for new brugs to get going until late spring when they will need either larger pots or go in the ground. It is space in my atrium which I keep between 70 and 80 degrees with flourescent lights on for growing. I have a table I made a couple years ago.. the baby brugs are on top with a light over them.. that is the space I am out of.. thought the table was big enough.. about 3 x 5 have a few other plants there too.. couple plumerias that are too tall to be under the table and 3 EE's I received.. they are in small pots and have their first leaves growing. Otherwise.. it is all brugs in cups and I am down to two small easter buckets for bubblers... one has the 9 log brug cuttings with huge roots.. all need to be in the black buckets with dirt.. way too big for cups. One has a new stem of growth about 8 inches tall! Sprang up in the last week while I was sick. I can't believe how fast these roots have grown! The other bubbler bucket is my cuttings from my in the ground brugs I haven't had time to do anything with.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

oh wow Tammie. You do have your hands full. Do you have a bedroom with at least some sun exposure you could supplement with lights. My guest room stays about 68 at night and everyone is thriving in there.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Jeanne, what's up? Yes Tammie, you do have your hands full! I can't imagine how people that have 100 plus cuttings manage it....I have 45 plants total and feel like I need to call it quits if I can.....I have to think about the future and how on earth I can care for them all, especially once they are in the ground. Hard to resist the pull that more Brugs make you feel though ☺

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

It is hard to resist, but resist we must. Boo hoo. I only have 22 and you all have 40 and more? I couldn't handle the stress. I baby all mine as it is. I talk to them and encourage them to grow up to be big beautiful brugs. Yes, I admit it, I talk to my plants.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I have a mother to share all my plants with! Everything I to get out of the infant stage gets shared. Half go to her house and she has much more space than I do. I still get to care for them some. Help her keep them fertilized but she keeps them watered and mostly does it. I have to do the winterizing. It is the baby stage I have to manage. I gave my mother one of my first brugs,... a NO ID white... it was the first one we put in the ground and the very first in person brug bloom I ever saw... it was a beautiful flush. That was the plant we practiced with last year with the bubble wrap on the main trunk and discovered we could save it over winter to give it a head start for the spring growth. It grew to about 5 ft tall this year... almost twice as tall as the year before. This year we have twice as much bubble wraped and the ground around it is well mulched. We took cuttings too.. just in case....whatever amount of the trunk we are able to save is that much ahead it will be in the spring.

....Oh, I also have friends and neighbors who delight in the occasional gift plant so I am never over run with plants around here. I am growing a few brugs specifically for gifts.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello all!!

Karen I am mailing you the ornaments in the morning... once again I am sorry for holding you up! We are going to Houston for Lyles surgery, and as soon as I can I'll get you the confirmation #

Still have much to do, and we are leaving at 6... IF I get up..lol

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I sent one of my rooted potted cuttings to Florida with my daughter over Thanksgiving to give to her stepmother. She loved it. Half of mine will go to my brother and daughter. But like you say Tammie, the baby stage is mine. I won't give them to them until spring when they are ready to plant because I can't bear the thought of them overwintering with anyone but me. I'm home everyday and can care for them. Brother and daughter work so their time is limited. Once in the ground they are easier to care for.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gosh Tammie, I thought I had alot lol, you and Karen have way more than me and I have a whole basement just waiting to be filled up.. I grow other things besides brugs too.. and about those critters.. yuk! I have tons of little teeny tiny dots that move and scatter in a couple of my pots, and I took the plants out, microwaved the dirt, and they were still crawling after 8 minutes in the wave! now the dirt is outside in the pots freezing to death I hope.. I hate critters in my dirt in pots except for earthworms.. I have a couple large worms in my big pots and they push out leavins out the holes in the bottoms for me to put in my other plant pots .. Beck! *hugs*

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank God I don't have any critters that I know of. I don't see anything crawling. I hate bugs in the house. I do have a gecko in the sunroom on the otherhand.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I don't have THAT many! Just not enough room on the table! Who knows how many will survive by spring. Here is a picture of my mini brug cutting forest on the table and my bowl of moss ready for the rest of them to go into cups and pots. That is the last space left on the table. I started using the spray recipe and a couple of the cuttings have the DARKEST green leaves I have ever seen! I am backng off a little..... a bit too dark.. they sure do like that stuff!

That little light is a full spectrum light over my little amaryllis seedlings I have been growing for the past year...there are 4 in one pot and 3 in another... I have a 4 ft double flourescent light just above everything in the picture. It is on a chain so I can raise or lower it as needed. It is just a shop light from Walmart.. the cheap one. See.. not THAT MANY... really.... honest..... I am not addicted... really... not.... well.... not that bad.... honest... LOL

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Morning!!

I would say the coffee's hot.. but ya better hurry... cause we're leaving in a bit..lol

Tammy..lol.. I mentioned on another thread, I "just might" have about 100... but I haven't taken an official count! BUT... your looks soo nice with the recipe! I finally copied it the other day, and figured I better get with the program!

Ty Debra for the hugs.. I'll let ya'll know how Lyle does as soon as I can..

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Morning. Thanks for the coffee becky God luck at the docs. Let us know how things go when ya get back.

Karen. I would say that is from a moth. Which one I have no idea unless it hatches. I used to find them in my groudn soil all time, but used ot have alot of moths too. Only a few anymore, neighbors cats and the birds usually take them out.

If you want to know exactly which one, you cna take one, and put it in a baggy. Eventually it will hatch and then you cna get a good id on it.

Another frosty morning.. Gonan park my rump right her einside til it warms up some. I froze so bad yesterday morning. whoever had this car before me took the heat and the defroster all th eparts out and so there not one in there now. Didn't know the whoel system was gone when i bought it. Didn't think about heat when it was 90+ out.

Have a good day everybody and stay warm. : )

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

morning all. hey Tammie, I have that same blue dish! LOL
windy as all get out here and COOLLDD... off to work I go Everyone! stay warm and think lovely Brug bloom thoughts!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Ella thanks for the baggie tip girl but I threw that yucky pot of bug larvae into the trash and the men have already hauled it off this morning. I just immediately freaked and wanted them out of here already! Potted plants and bugs, and greenhouses are all new to me since my gardening experience has increased...I have never liked potted plants and kill most house plants. I thrive at in-ground gardening, and luckily, have never had a bug problem on any of my old plants that I knew of or could see. I've never worried about "protecting" a plant from cold in my life. Just let em die every winter and they come back every spring, better than ever. Now that the Bruggies have entered my life I have more fun than ever and more worry in the winter too! Used to be, winter was my complete time off from gardening chores....Ah, but I love it though!!!!

Deb how much of the recipe are you using per gallon? I'm still using the 6 TBS per gallon and get lots of pretty green growth but not as dark as yours.....Are you adding Miricle Grow to yours? I do....Just comparing notes.....

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone. Hope your all staying nice and warm? it is not too cool here yet. It gets down to about 40 at night, so no frost here yet???
I am going to need about 20 new pots here shortly, and I don't know where to get them. Home depot , nor wal mart sells the black plastic pots. Where can I get them?
LK

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda Kay you can use Milk jugs with the tops cut off in an emergency...My local nursery sells them to me for like a quarter a pot. (the black pots, not milk jugs, LOL!)You can also use big coffee cans, etc.

Have to remember all these great things to use for pots. A couple of my newly rooted and potted up brugs are dropping tiny leaves, is there a reason for me to worry about them? I have a couple that are doing so great, guess I should wait a while before putting them in a bigger pot. I'm always checking on the ones out in back, one of them look like they have tiny buds on them. Not going to get too excited because I had larger buds before that fell off.

Saved a few containers with plastic domes that pie, etc. came in to use as mini greenhouses. Over the Thanksgivining holiday I put my claim on a few.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks, We don't use that much milk here, but we buy water in the gallon jugs, We just through them out. NOT ANY MORE!!!
Why didn't I think of that?
Thanks Karen
LK

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

By the way, I now have a bunch of double/triple/quad yellow datura seeds all dried, and ready to go to anyone wants them for postage. Please send me d-mail with your name and address. I will put them in a small bubble evelope for you.
