She's about to.....#39 Brug Addicts Chat

(Zone 7a)

I accept that cupper!

I, too, know who this "person" was and I know Admin will keep up the good work on screening posts and treads to keep us safe.

'nuff said.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks. me too!

I had posted this in another forum I hang out in and was looking at my coutner and the brugs I have soaking that I need topot and also at the dishes I need to get caught up on and I know how fond ya all are of
H....work. Thought ya might get a kick out of this old poem I found on my puter again the other day.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A GARDENER’S SPOUSE

She dug the plot on Monday-
The soil was rich and fine,
She forgot to thaw out dinner-
So we went out to dine…
She planted roses Tuesday-
She says they are a must,
They really are quite lovely,
But she forgot to dust…
On Wednesday it was daises-
They opened up with the sun,
All whites and pinks and yellows-
But the laundry wasn’t done…
The poppies came on Thursday-
A bright and cherry red,
I guess she really was engrossed-
She never made the bed…
It was violets on Friday-
In colors she adores,
It never bothered her at all-
All the crumbs upon the floor…
I hired a maid on Saturday-
My week is now complete,
My wife can garden all she wants-
The house will still be neat!
It’s nearly lunchtime Sunday-
And I cannot find the maid,
Oh no! I don’t believe it!
She’s out there WITH THE SPADE!!!

We crossed, TG. I'm in the same boat as you. My plants would not look as they do or be as diverse.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Ella... a woman straight from my heart!!..lol.. now you know why I wanted to ban that H..work word..lol
Hey Celia
Jeanne.. that is what I come for... but the drama has to go!! I am not here for that

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I love that poem. It's so true lol

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I hear ya Becky.

(Zone 7a)

Hey, Becky.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I need to run outside and cover some pots too big to move. It's cold and windy here. Going to be colder tonight. I know it will be pretty cold because the birds are at the feeders in a feeding frenzy.

Later.......

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Wow that poem sure rings a bell. My mother is not allowed in my house not in years because she constantly nags me about the mess.. she says if I took half as much care of the house as I do the yard my house would be beautiful.. well, no one sees the house but lots of people see my yard. I did straighten up and clean last week.. got the living room, dining room and kitchen cleaned.. let her come over... of course. ..she could not see how clean it was .. she had to harp on what was not perfect.. she found dust on the one thing I missed! I have my big embroidery machine and cutting/hooping table in the dining area because it is the only place in the house large enough for me to work with it and it is very convenient to use there....so there it sits on its own stand and the plastic multi drawer set up full of bobbins and thread.. she had fits that it was there! Like it bothers anyone.. I live alone! She has harped on me every time we have talked since.. "have you moved it out of there" "you know it does not belong in there" ... now you know why she is not allowed in my house! I am 47.. I think I can use my house however I want.. LOL My father comes over a lot.. he of course said how great everything looked. Anyway.. wanted to share that with someone.. those of you in the ornament exchange will understand why my embroidery machine is so important.... hint! I enjoy working in the yard much more than cleaning house.. I cleaned 2 weeks ago.. it is still clean.. well, except the dishes in one side of the sink.. those have built up since I have been sick... mostly soup bowls.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh Jeanne.. don't remind me..lol.. I still have a few plants to take to the GH... even though the GH isn't quite finished yet..lol.. I told Lyle WE have to finish it tomorrow regardless if that man comes!!
Tammy.. I have been that way for years, and always said that same thing, that more people see the outside, course being 1/4 mile off the road, not many even see the outside..lol.. BUT.. I still have that mindset!! TG my Momma never was that way, but the way I see it... IF a person comes sees ME they are supposed to see ME... NOT all the mess!!
Celia... been meaning to tell you I have always wanted to see Utah... I used to be a Morman, and always wanted to see the temple

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Star, holding my cup out for a fill of your wonderful coffee please?
I think we all have several cups with cuttings. I have so many, I think I will share some with my 2 daughter in laws. They will love them also.

Love that poem. thanks

Wow we are never without something happening around here.....wow is all I can say.

Have made alot of new and wonderful friends and gardeners who are so eager to share.

Had to put a dehumidifier in the garden room, it kept shutting off, finally figured out it was freezing up. Had to raise the temp which is not what I wanted to do. Propane is too expensive.

Anyone growing plumerias? I am about to throw in the towel. It is like a test and I won't give up.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I had to buy a humidifier yesterday! It is way to dry here and as sick as I am the coughing is killing me. I have plumerias.. no blooms yet but have only grown them 2 years.. have an inflo right now that is still growing in my atrium.. it has continued to grow since I brought them in. My light under the table where I have all but 2 of the plumerias went out last week so I think I am going to let them go dormant this year instead.. I kept them growing last winter.. they are all about 2 ft tall now.. started all from cuttings... have one I started from seed.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello all! My kids are gone now and the house is quiet, just me and the doggies and Jerry....Ella I'll have a cup of coffee with you...I go through 2 pots a day by myself, LOL! (Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Haha, yes Tammie but I am looking forward to it! Such beautiful and creative things you would not believe! Definitely an added benefit that I get to see them first, LOL! Hopefully we will get this completed soon.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Spending tommorrow evening after work with Pauline.. hope everyone has a great day Monday..
and I love all of you as my own sisters and brothers.. can't go a day without checking in.. I do miss Bonnie, hope she is okay, and has anyone heard from phyllis?
Tammie I am glad you are about .. kjwain, ella, pegi, karen.. beck, hugs to all of you.. I really enoy and hold my time with you all in here precious.. and have learned so much from all of you.. and will keep learning.. thanks so much...

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I'll take a cuppa coffee too. I would never have know about brugs or many other wonderful plants if I hadn't joined DG. I always liked working in the yard, but never in the house. I've met some wonderful people here. Never found anyone to share all this great information until now.

I have realized that there are many more tomorrows for me although I hadn't felt that way since I lost my 42 yr. old son almost 4 yrs. ago. If I hadn't joined DG and met so many friends I'd still be in that funky mood. My son got me involved with the computer which I was really afraid of, and here I am enjoying gardening again. You all are so very special.
((((((((((((hugs to all)))))))))))

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Debra...
Phyllis has been on a "honeymoon..LOL... celebrating her and DH's 27th Anniversary.. she is back but tired.. I don't know why Bonnie hasn't been posting... anyone know?? Wish I could have been with ya'll.. I luv yard sales thrift stoes and flea markets. Enjoy tomorrow with Pauline
Karen... I am sooo sorry, but mine will be in the mail tomorrow. I'll give you the confirmation #
Joyce.. I brought my only one in the house, and it doesn't like it, but I am afraid of the low temps outside. When we get the GH finished I am taking it out, and hope mine goes dormant, but doesn't die!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

My outside brugs did not mind the temps in the low 30's even! I was surprised... their growth sure did slow down and they were unhappy if I did not water them well but otherwise they did not even blink. I only worry about them now when the temps go below freezing for an extended period of time. They are now cut back and main stems are wraped with bubble wrap... ready for the spring.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Tammy... funny thing, but the brugs i have in the ground are ok.. but we haven't really had a freeze yet.. just some frosts, but my smallest one has 2 buds on it and they are growing...lol... the ones I brought in is what did soo bad... I was referring to the plumaria also.. that was doing soo poorly in the house

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Plumeria are much more finicky..... they will pout all winter or either go completely dormant and start growing again in the spring. They will lose most or all of their leaves indoors. Don't worry. They are true tropicals and really want more sun and heat than we can provide indoors. Much less forgiving than our wonderful brugs.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Tammy .. TY for that info, cause this is the only one i have had. i really don't want to lose it. I think I have "some" of the heat, just no sun..lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky, my three plummies that I have (2 from Bonnie) One from Cat i think, are all budding.. they lost thier leaves when I firt got them, just like all the brug cuttngs, but everything is budding and leafing out like crazy.. I have them under a clamp on light most of the day ..
If Ilived in texas I would prolly have alot in the ground, assuming it is not always freezing there.. it has gotten into the 20's here and the base of the brug out back is still green and healthy.. I have it all covered up under all kinds of heavy pads and the plastic baggie holding the mg vines on top of all that.. hope that works , I still have to rake all the leaves out back to the flower beds before it snows.. which will prolly be wenesday here.. yuk.
Pegi, I went thru the same funk for about a year and a half when I lost my MOM.. thank goodness for the computor..
Love ya sister!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

hi all,

I am sorry, but ornaments did not get in the mail yet :( I am REALLY hoping for tomorrow, but if not, I will send them individually.

I got a call on fri that my son was in ICU with stroke like symptoms (he is 21) they had to put him in a drug induced coma to run a cat scan and other tests to see whats wrong. still dont know for sure, he is no longer in the coma, but does not seem to be able to talk very well or make any sense when he talks. we thought drugs were involved, but toxicology reports say nothing in his system at all for at least 30 days....so still dont know what all is going to happen with him. part of the problem is he has no medical insurance so is at the county hospital and they are really overloaded. I am working ontrying to get him private insurance instead...but not sure I can in his condition :(

DH was going to help me cut up some stuff I need for the ornaments and I was going to package them up tonight, but he ran off to the store and its already 10PM here. I'll be at MY docs tomorrow. so hoping we can get the stuff cut, and everything put together tomorrow night and I will mail on tues if not, I will mail individually to you all. dont want anyone held up cause of me...but I think you will all LOVE these ornaments and those who didnt do the swap will definitely be kicking themselves pretty hard :o) teehee!

I'll try to log on tomorrow and let you know where I am with them all.

also, if you are mailing ornaments for Jesse, can you send them this week? I want to hurry and mail her xmas tree to her ASAP before I go back to the hospital again. if not, I'll give karen her addy and you can get it from her and mail the ornament to her direct instead. I plan to mail her tree on thurs this week.

I also still gotta get those brug cuttings cut and sent to those I promised, will try to do that this week to! :o)
AnjL

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

wait! DH just gothomeand he is cutting my pieces now! maybe I CANget these in the mail tomorrow! yippee!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

AnnMArie, please don't worry about your brug cuttings, thay can wait till next spring, when you have mpopre time, and less things to worry about.
Right now all we want is for you and your family to be healed, and no more sickies!
Saying prayers for you now, for you and your son, and hubby too.
((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))
Please take care, and post when you can.

Morning everybody!

Coffees ready. Passign out cups this morning, but becareful and sloshign them a bit. Somebody took the warmth away when I was sleeping last night. Didn't turn the heat on cuz thought it was supposed to be in the high 40's instead I wake up and down in this valley it just breakign 30F and will be lucky to get to 40 today.

I hope my brug babies is ok. Would have brought them in if I would have known it was gonna get that cold. Poor things i can just here them talkign amongest themselves wondering when they gonna get warm too.

I am havig a terrible problem tryign to keep mosture out of the gh. The whole inside the top is covered with moisture drops. Ya walk in and they fall on yoru head. I had both the front door and the back door open yesterday, but it didn't help to dry it out. Haven't done anythign different than I normally do, so can't understand why it so wet in there?

I thinking about takign my hair dryer out there and tryign to see if I can dry things that away. I am afraid to put a heater out there right now, cuz it one of them open ones with the metal wires across and afraid of the water dripping on it and short circuting out. Afraid to turn the light son too cuz all the bulbs are covered with moisture too. Popping glass all ove rplants would be a disaster.

Think a hair dryer would be to hard on them?

Heard today is Cyber Monday, so figure the computers are gonna run slow today. I love flea markets and garage sales, but lately we have had rain on the weekend, so nothign going on.

This gonan sound really dumb, but what are flick's. I been listenign to this tv commercial over and over for a cell phone that you cna send text mail and pics and flick's. I don't have a cell phone. Electronics and me don't get along. I know what a text is, and what a pic is but for the life of me can't figure out what a flicks is. ( scratches head)

I know I excited. : ) Know there alot of talented people here. I always amazed at what folks can come with when they get creative.

Anjil.. Hope everythign goes ok with yoru son and they find out what wrong soon. It scarey when your kids are sick, no matter how old they are.

Finally, gettign a bit warm Got the heater on and sitting on it. Ahhhhhhh comfy! : )

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Starlight, I'll have a cup, too, and here's you a bagel with cream cheese to go with yours!
Girls, IT'S SNOWING HERE! Just spitting! Love it!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

TY Ella.... I will wait till it warms up a bit..lol... I am a baby with the cold!! It was supposed to go down to 32, but i woke early to let the dogs out and no frost, so hope my brugs in the ground will be ok, since i haven't cut the tops off yet for insurance..lol
Debra.... that's also good info on the plumerias. The only thing i think I remember on them is they don't like weather under the 50's??.. I need to go back and read..lol... We get too cold to put them in the ground here, but that clamp on light sounds like they would like that!
anjl.. gosh dog... when it rains it pours... and i know you know what i am talking about. I hope the best for your son. and hope you are doing well also.. just take care of yourself first...

Mornin everyone!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Happy Holidays! Anjl, that is scary about your young son... I will keep him in my prayers. I went to KC for a couple days after Thanksgiving and Drew's laptop is in the repair shop, so no internet. I also got together with my sis and we made cinnimon ornaments for my nephew's (her son)Christmas tree. I'd never made them before, it was fun... Mel and I have decorated with lights outside and hope to get the tree up today.
Star, a flick - a short video? Thanks for coffee this morning.. got in really late last night and I'll take an extra cup or two today!.. Audrey it snowed here enough to cover the ground and it hasn't melted off this morning. It sure gets me in a Christmas mood. Then about Jan 2nd... I'm ready for spring! lol I'll never get caught up with the thread and I've got laundry and a messy house waiting on me BEFORE I can do any decorating.
I've meant to tell my friends here that I was laid off my job of 10 years the week before Thanksgiving. (nice timing, huh?) Immediately, I'm taking some time for myself and hope to move and find employment somewhere around Kansas City by next Spring or summer. Hope everyone who is sick is feeling better and special prayers going out for AnjL's son. ((((Pegi)))) -okay I read the last few posts.. but I gotta get busy!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hey Bonnie, glad to see you back online. Sorry to hear you got laid off! Lots of places are just clodsing the doors. Did they give you any notice?
Post the cinnamon ornament recipe if you can please? That sounds like they smell really good?
Stay warm everyone. Audrey, I bet the snow is so pretty to look at, but like Bonnie says, come January, your ready for spring/summer!!!
LK

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Bonnie.. I am sooo sorry for this bad news, but i know you are strong, and will find another job, hopefully much better .. more money and pleasant people to work around!! yeah.. that cinnamon ornament sounds wonderful.. could you just use them like sachets too?? I love cinnamon

Audrey.. I loved it this morning...Lyle said it's snowing in TN.. I said yeah I know it.. he said how??.. I said Audrey told me...lolol... I won't go into the rest of it...

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Haven't talked to Bonnie but I make these every year, I'm sure they are very similar :)

CINNAMON CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

3/4 cup cinnamon
1 T. allspice
2 T. cloves
1 T. nutmeg
1 cup applesauce
copper wire or wire ornament hangers
1/8 or 1/4 inch satin ribbon

Combine first 4 ingredients, blending well. Stir in applesauce, mix well (mixture will be stiff). Roll out to 1/4" thickness on an ungreased cookie sheet. Using small or medium size cookie cutters, cut dough into desired shapes. Peel away the excess dough and re-roll as necessary. Cut wire into 2" lengths as needed. Bend lengths of wire into horse shoe shapes, and insert ends into tops, leaving half circle of wire exposed. You may also use small wire ready made ornament hooks instead. Let ornaments dry uncovered for 4-5 days. Hang them on the tree or tie them on packages, your house will smell heavenly!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

AnnMarie, so sorry to hear about your son......you take care of yourself and know that all of you are in our prayers....please pop over to SI and keep us posted....we miss ya.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Prayers going out for Anjl from me too. Prayers are the best gift for anyone and so many need them now.

I've heard movies called flicks, manybe that word is coming back.

I've made cinnamon/applesauce ornaments before too. I remember one year my mom, sister-in-law and I spent a lot of time making them. Now I'm wondering if I have any left in my Christmas boxes. Time to think about getting them down out of the cupboards in the garage, if I can get DH to move some of his junk so I can get to them.

Coming home from the thrift store today we passed some homes just a short ways from us that had plumeria trees, and one especially was full of beautiful flowers. I told DH I want him to go around to everyone in the spring and ask them for cuttings, and I got the strangest look. I never noticed them until I became interested in them. I have a few still in pots, I think this spring some have to go into the ground. The house that has a yellow brug in full bloom has a plumeria planted in the same area. Really is pretty.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello! Anjl, prayers are being sent your way m'dear....Just try to relax and take care of yourself and your son now. Dmail me this week if you'd prefer to just send your ornaments at your own pace to the individual people...That will be fine, I hate for you to have to pay all of that postage....I would offer to wait indefinitely but I hate to not get everyone else's ornaments shipped out as soon as possible....Just let me know.
Ella hope you are feeling good today! What a kicker...I know the feeling to have your eyes opened wide here on a thread. Got any more of that coffee?
I am excited, I got my 4 tray heat mat and thermostat ordered today and am looking forward to germinating fun! Gave my brug cuttings their first dose of 20-20-20 in the pots and am looking forward to great bursts of length growth. Got all my outdoors plants in the "Brug Bags" and the greenhouse heater has it nice and toasty...I am going out now to have a little hot chocolate and some pecan pie and just look at my still blooming tropical hibiscus.....See you later!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

ornaments didnt get sent today :o( hoping I can get them out tomorrow. only a few more touches to about 5 of them and then they are all good to go :o) so will do my best to do priority tomorrow :o)

thanks all!
off to bed, much needed rest!
