Hi CJ! Sorry for not having answered before, but I "lost" this thread!
Portuguese people and our language share common roots with welsh and irish. The celts were pretty spread around europe, and reached south to the peninsula iberica, shared by Portugal and Spain. Particularly in the north of both countries it is very easy to find traces of this ancient culture (in archictecture, music, crafts, and the language as well). The portuguese language has strong roman and arabic influences, the latter of which making it rather different in vocabulary from welsh and irish.
Me and my DH have been to Ireland several times, and I love it dearly! I think it's easy to fall in love with Ireland and the Irish!
Love
MyHiraeth
Where did you get that username?
Hiraeth, isn't that the truth! My sister and I went to Ireland two years ago this October. Absolutely loved it. McGillicuddy's Reeks are awesome.
My birds named me. : )
They call me mamabirrrrrrrrrrd, hence the two r's in my username.
I had 4 birds until the loss of one last Christmas. They are the love of our lives. I have a Cockatiel, African Grey, and Greenwing Macaw. They are our "children". DH and I are now trying to get pregnant and have a non-feathered child, lol. ; )
Here is a pic of Stankie, our African Grey. His vocabulary is amazing and he is extremely intelligent. We got him shortly after he hatched and he is now 6 years old.
~Dawn
That's funny mamab, Stankie is quite handsome and love the name!
Same here...my pets are my 'kids'
Did you handfeed yourself?
His name is "officially" Leroy Brown, but we started calling him Stankie cause we are really wierd, lol.
Our Macaw is Sebastian, but we call him Mack.
fly_girl.....I call my office the Butterfly Room. I will have to show you my butterfly curtains from JCPenney....they are so cool. I'll see if I can dig up a pic. I've collected all kinds of butterfly things for in there.....but now it's sort of turned a bit tropical because my parrot "stuff" is in there too. I collect so much stuff....DH calls it junk. : )
My username, if given to me by DH, would be "hoarder". He calls me that all the time. Especially after he trips over something. ; )
~Dawn
ceejaytown, we must have been typing at the same time.
No, we didn't because it wasn't recommended. I really wanted to, but the people who own his parents will not sell them until they are ready to eat on their own. We got (bought) him right after hatching, but was not allowed to bring him home until 17 weeks. It was a LONG wait. I know how much is involved in handfeeding and was okay with them doing it, although I really wanted to. We were still able to give him some formula right at the beginning to experience that "bonding" part of it.
We got him in Townville, Pa....it was a 3 hour drive. That three hours coming home took forever. I'll never forget the moment we opened the box and out he walked onto our bed. He's had us wrapped around his "finger" ever since. He is spoiled rotten. DH sits with him every night and eats popcorn or peanuts and they leave me a HUGE mess. I don't know how i'd survive without my Dustbusters.
~Dawn
Handfeeding is very specialized and is best left up to the experts. A bird can easily be killed during the process.. My daughter breeds exotic birds and she gets very little sleep when she is handfeeding babies. I watched her last Christmas, handfeeding an African Grey baby - named Winston. That was one big baby! And with the larger birds, it takes several months to get past that stage. The owner came over several times a week to hold the baby, for bonding.
My daughter has a large macaw (don't remember which kind) named Sebastian also!
Nice thread! Like Niere, my username is a translation of my real name (Tanya) into Elvish. It is pronounced in-whi-tah-rri. :)
Hi inwitari! I can't believe this thread was started over a year ago!
Your name is pretty, I didn't know there is a language? called Elvish.
Hi fly_girl! Well, the language was created by JRR Tolkien as backround for the Elvish race in Lord of the Rings. Other than being an author, he was a professor of linguistics at Oxford, and took immense pleasure in developing languages for the character races in his books. I have been a Tolkien geek for many years now, and my interest in all things gardening kind of stems from descriptions of hobbits, from his books. Very earthy and agrarian, with a deep appreciation of a good garden and yummy veggies. :) Known, above all, for a "love of all things that grow..."
My favorite things that I collect are anything dragony and I was 62 yrs old when I joined DG. Thanks this is fun. Bev
Interesting inwitari, I didn't know Tolkien was a professor...he had quite an imagination too :)
Bev, I love dragonflies too.....but boy the id'ing of some can be quite a challenge!
I do not id them I just love them all. I have even made a dragonfly pin out of beads. I sold one for 10 dollars when I had a little shop in the house acouple of years ago. I had to give it up because my hubby had strokes and my disabled son moved in so am pretty busy but ka-sara. I have loads of beads and stuff to do with. Keeps me busy in winter too. I love all these names and the history behide them. Thanks for starting this. Bev
My name isn't so intriguing. My name is Maureen, everyone calls me Moe (except my sibs, they have always called me More) Momo is short for Maureen, and 125 was the address I lived at all my life until I got married. I grew up on Grace Road. There was such an attachment to it for all of my sibs. My sister named her daughter Abigail Grace.
Fun to see this thread back in business! Since I posted way back when, two new babies were conceived - I wonder what variation each of them will come up with???!!!
M - I'll bet a lot more than two babies were conceived!!! LOL!!!
I gave my life to Jesus in 1991.
**Leah**
Ceejay, you're too funny!! Just two babies in my own little family (I hope only two anyway!)
Had to add mine to the list...my nickname is Wolf....and my initials are LRV..hence Wolflrv...which most folks think I misspelled to mean wolf-lover somehow...LOL! Which I am a major wolf lover..but it just happens that those are my initials...anyway...just clarifying...:) I usually go by Wolf or Vincent(my last name)...don't much care for my first name...never use it.
I'm glad you clarified that. I could tell u loved wolves because of a thread I was reading somewhere where u were talking about alaska. I was trying to figure it out and i thought... maybe he spelled it wrong...nah...maybe wolflvr was taken...nah. Oh well, I don't know. LOL! Nice to meet ya Wolf.
**Leah**
Nice to meet you Moe, Leah and Wolf!!!
Murmur and CJ are oldies...but goodies! lol
Wolf, I'm a wolf lover too....rescued one about 8 years ago....she's the greatest canine. We've been learning to walk on a leash...quite an adventure!
Leah, that is my neice's name ,too. Beautiful name and biblical, too. My sister gave all her kids biblical names. Hannah, Abigail, Gideon and Leah. PTL
Oh, I forgot to say, Flygirl, by your name, I thought you were like one of the girls in the music videos. Don't they call the dancers "Fly girls"?
I get it now. It couldn't have been that you were a fan of the house fly! LOL
I took my name from my Siamese cat. I tried to get a Thai name for her, but no luck in finding a Thai dictionary I could read!
I finally settled for Japanese. Since I don't read or speak Japanese, I took two words from and English/ Japanese site and combined them for her name.
Machiko= beautiful lady
Neko= cat
So her name means "Beautiful lady cat."
I use it on a lot of sites because it's unique; I can be pretty sure than no one has this name.
(PS, the picture of Machi was taken on one of her favorite perching sites; our kitchen door.)
Machi...
Wow...Machi the cat is gorgeous! I'm sure it's just the lighting in the picture, but even the INSIDE of her ears looks blue!!! When I was growing up we had Siamese cats....mated them....had babies....have lots of reels (yes, I'm showing my age) of 8mm movies with little Siamese kitties running all over the place.
We had a Ho Chi Mien (not sure of spelling now...called Ho for short), a Mei Ling, a Blue Bird (don't know where that name came from!), etc.
My user name is not creative, and I'm generally creative in every other area...don't know why the night I signed up I just put my name and the letter of my last name...
Connie
Thanks Moe! I've always liked my name. It's getting more common to hear it now. Although my parents are Christians they didn't name me from the Leah in the Bible. They named me after a song by Roy Orbison. A few years back I was curious so I ordered the CD and I hated the song... LOL... I thought it was annoying. Go figure. I like thinking of it as a biblical name better anyway. :-)
**Leah**
My user name is self explanatory if you ever met a siamese cat, have been owned by them for decades, just love them....and we did have five. We're down to four right now, but anything can happen so I'm not asking for a change. Machi is beautiful. I get abbreviated to M5, or meezers, but my real name is Sheila.
My last effort trying to find a Thai name was by using the internet. None of the ones I found seemed melodic, or pleasant, so almost always our kids end up with s names. Souky, Sammi, Sienna....
This is Sammi with Sienna...
Oh, I just came across this thread and it is so great! I have really been enjoying reading about everyone and their user names, whether unusual or not! I don't have a creative bone in my body, so I usually use one of my cat's names but some of my friends always call me the plant lady because I have so many house plants ... and my given name is Linda (Hubby, friends and family shortened it to Lin) ..... so, I'm Plantladylin. Nice to meet you all. I have a photo posted on my info page that DH took of me last year in the midst of repotting some plants out on my deck. Not the most becoming pic, but it is what I look like most of the time with hair in a pony tail and gardening gloves on my hands! Oh and CROC'S on my feet! I love those shoes ... I wear them whenever I'm out doing yardwork and then throw them into the pool to soak until the next day! I have 4 pairs ... Pink, Brown, Navy and Green! They are the most comfortable shoes! I do wear them shopping at times too. Some folks look at you kinda funny ... a lot of people really hate these shoes but to me they are the "perfect" footwear!
At one time I was called "Cookielady" cause I used to bake a lot of cookies!
Sure love everyone's stories .... it is a small world, isn't it? We all have a lot more in common than we sometimes realized! We have 4 cats in our family at the moment ... hope to have another dog some day when the older cats are gone, but right now we don't think it would be fair to bring an active puppy into the house! At one time we had 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 birds and 2 fish tanks full of fish! Now it's just the 4 cats and a 150 gal Salt Water Aquarium!
Lin, you are adorable - and what a gorgeous setting you have there!
Just found this thread. What fun to hear everyone's stories! My name is also taken from one of my fur babies. She is a brown tabby named Tessa. She also is REALLY fond of tuna and over time her name changed to Tetleytuna. I actually found her as a small kitten trapped under a board near my front door. You can usually find her on my lap when I am visiting DG so it just seemed natural to use her name.
Lin - I have the same screened in pool arrangement. Right down to the "kick panels" at the bottom! Mine is two stories high because of my house, but otherwise.... Maybe the same people did them!!! And I wear crocs too. (Bought some for my 4 year old granddaughter also!)
Machi and Sheila, beautiful kitties. We used to have a Siamese and she was the moodiest, if she didn't want any more attention she would bite you! Kind of took the fun out of petting her.
Hi Linda, I wear my crocs all the time too, they are the best gardening shoes and love the fact they can just be hosed off. I've seen little boys with them on too, so cute when they're on kiddos......FGOA........Future Gardeners of America.
Tetley, I have alwasy wondered about your handle, now I know. My cats only will drink the tuna juice, they don't really care for the tuna itself. But then again, one of my cats loves peanuts.
Moe, I remember the comedy show, In Living Color.....those dancers were called The Fly Girls.
fly - Whenever I cogitate on your name, I always think of the movie "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum - creepy. Butterfly is not what comes to mind unless I think of you - personally. Maybe Bfly_girl would have helped. But wait!! That makes it sound like you're not on the A list, which you are! Hmmm.... Quandary. I'll have to think about that more.. LOL!!
