Connie: You are correct. OTR= over the road. We were team drivers. meaning that truck can run 24 hrs a day. Worked for a company that hauled a lot of military components, and a lot of hazardous materials. Some of these had to be guarded with a person AWAKE 24 hours a day. Would not like to be doing that these days with all problems since 9-11.
Where did you get that username?
Wow...live and learn...I had no idea that those trucks were kept going 24/7!! But I guess with the rig being what they cost, you have to use them constantly, like the planes.
I have alot of respect for truckdrivers, that would be a tough job. The loneliness and highway monotony....I don't think I could do it.
Me too. Every time I get behind the wheel for a long-distance trip, I get so sleepy that I seriously don't know what to do! I hate to admit it, but I used to drive home from a teaching job in a country town, (it was at 3:00 in the aft. through the country on a straight road, and I READ to keep awake. I know that's TERRIBLE, but it was all I could do. The radio would put me to sleep!!
I'm fine at night...I'm wide awake then.
Well, lets see - tgif. I was surprised to find that it wasn't taken, since it almost always is. But I actually don't mean it in the usual "thank goodness its Friday". I mean it as "thank goodness *I'm* Friday" - 'cause that's my real name!
In college everyone called me Friday and someone asked how I got that 'nickname'. I told him "It was real hard to come by. I was born with it!"
ginni
So were you born on Friday...so it's a nickname?
Or is it your middle name? Or last name?
Because you signed your name Ginni....
I'm so confused...haha
It is really my last name - changed from the German "Freitag" by my GGF because he believed an Amirican citizen should have an Amirican name.
Thing about living with your spouse 24 hrs a day in an 8 ft box. The first 6 months were very very hard as we were both very stiff necked. But after deciding we really liked each other and we could get along most of the time we really had an enjoyable time out on the road. We went to all 48 states and several providences in Canada. On layovers we did a lot of sight seeing and saw much we definitely never have seen any other way.
Now we'd just as soon stay home as go anywhere.
So, Petra...did u take your turn driving too? Or were you just a passenger??
Oh yeah I drove. DH used to tell everyone , I sleep, my wife drives, my wife does paperwork, my wife calls in, I sleep.
Wasn't quite that bad, but makes a good story.
Whe I decided I'd had enough winters out there, not because of the bad roads, but I personally slipped & slid getting from the truck into the truckstop, Our dispatcher said you're going to be missed. Because he knew the paperwork was done correctly when I did it.
This is a fun thread, thanks for starting it! I ran across an old one that was about how people got their IDs, some are still around, so I got to find out their story.
I had an ID when I first joined that was initials and part of my last name. I got tired of being called Frank. LOL! But like Connie_W said, everyone eventually signs their real name. So I got Dave to switch me. Sheila is my name and the "FW" is for Fort Worth (Texas of course). I am a native Texan and love my City.
I just wished tgif a Happy Birthday on Friday!! LOL!! I didn't know it was her name! If you guys don't know about that thread look under 'HomeTalk' then Back Porch.
I wish that more of you had your pictures posted so I could associate a face with a name. Like Connie, billyporter, and Luvsgrtdns. I have one on there, not too flattering but it is the real me. It was taken by another DGer at a Plant Swap and on a sunny and windy day.
I love the edeniswaiting too!
I am up waaayyy past my bedtime and getting wordy! Check in on this thread tomorrow. Y'all get those pictures out there on your info pages!
Tgif, that's sad about your GGF changing your name, I wonder if alot of families did that. The weird thing is that the US was, and still is, a melting pot of people from everywhere. My family's from Scotland, don't know if they changed our name, maybe dropped a letter or 2.
Living with dh 24-7....hhhmmmm, that might be a tough one, I dearly love him ,but that's a little too much togethertime lol
Sheila, I think I'll just describe myself instead of the pic....
I look like a movie star and I'm really young, like 20's.....heehee
Living with dh 24/7 in a truck? I don't THINK so!!! He's a golfer and I'm a gardener . . . and never the twain shall meet!
Petra, is there a place where pics of DGer's are posted?
Many names were changed when families emigrated to the US because the names were written down more by sound than knowledge. Non-English speaking people couldn't always understand the questions being asked and the emigration officials just wrote what they heard as best they could. At least I'm fortunate enough to know the original name and have been able to trace a couple of generations to Germany. My brother was in Germany on a business trip once and was able to add a bit to our history. I hope (not holding my breath!) to go to England and Ireland some day to check out other family lines and maybe add some more info to my history.
Biv is a syllable of my last name. I'm one of those women who's still goofy over my husband after 32 years (next month), so I guess I always think in pairs. :) Otherwise, I'm Marcia.
Biv, that's lovely! Despite the way I talk, I'm pretty crazy about mine as well.
I am with you BivBiv, moody as he gets sometimes, I wouldn't have anyone else.
Big congrats on the 32 years!!! I was married 18 yrs the first time, and never happy like I am now. Current DH and I have our 19th year coming up in Dec.
Murmur,
You can post a picture of your choice on your personal profile page. Click "my info" tab and then select "manage your preferences". Then you can select picture on the left.
Thanks, Sheila - maybe I'll post one from when I was much younger, thinner, cuter - lol!!!
And you know now why my "head shot" was cropped! LOL!!
Murmur and Sheila, I'm glad there are others like me! :))))
None of us should feel that way, of course, but it's rather startling at times to see how much we've changed!!! Inside, still that same young girl with the same kinds of thoughts and feelings . . . but OUTSIDE!!! Oh, my.
thank you, Barklee, for demonstrating that !
love,
mom
Very loving dogs, I understand. There are a couple people I see at stores in the area who have Corgi's and I always love the opportunity to cuddle them!
Great photos!
The Queen of England's beloved doggies, aren't they?
I saw these adorable Corgi's at the dog show yesterday. One did a GREAT job on the obstacle course. How lucky you are to be such a proud momma!
Although, I should say, I don't think any dogs have that much fun at those shows. If I were a dog, I wouldn't want to wait in a crate for hours only to be groomed and sprayed and perfumed. The performing thing, well, they seem to like that but, having to be on good behavior for so many hours just doesn't seem like so much fun. If I were a dog I would be yelling, "Can I go play YET????"
I didn't realize they didn't have a tail.
Paul James, the gardener guy, has one.............a corgi lol
Glad you clarified that fly girl.............that he had a corgi and not a tail. LOL!
Well, I looked at the "behind" pic of the dog and could have sworn I saw a tail...althought I KNEW she said there was none. Hmmmm...glad I'm not called upon to testify to that!!! lol
Although Paul James would have had fun with that one. I really enjoy his show, even the reruns.
Incase some of you don't know, he does the Gardening by the Yard show on HGTV.
Sheila, I feel I know you from the pics y'all posted after the College Station Round Up in April or early May? I had just joined DG and was really reading (trying!!) all the threads.
Are y'all planning another any time soon? I'd love to be able to meet all the Dallas and SA people!!
I don't know if you want to try to come to the Dallas Swap (in Arlington) this October or not, but would love to meet you. Read some of the posts and you can see those that are coming.
Here are the links:
It started here ……. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/603077/
We got way off topic, but it has some good info there too. The address of the Veteran's Park location is in the thread somewhere.

Also Dave will be hosting another Statewide RU this year in November. :-))
planning on the Nov. RU got it inked into the calender.
The Statewide RU is held in College Station and is scheduled for Nov 4....
Won't it be awfully cold for an outdoor function in Nov? Or perhaps sunny and hot? Did y'all have this last year? Outdoors? I love heat and hate the cold....LOL
Yes, I don't know why they set one for November. I figure it will be more of a seed swap for me. I usually don't have much growing that time of year. It was fun just to get together and eat and meet DGers from all over our State, plus others from OK, AZ, and MS. We had a lot of fun this past April. It is a really nice pavillion with a restroom and a large kitchen area, and loads of parking.
Here is the link for the one in CS that Dave is hosting.

Well, if I can make it that weekend, I will go just to meet people and perhaps visit some nurseries there in the area (with thought of spring on my mind!!). I'd love to meet y'all! I know many people have said they had a great time in April, but that was the week after I joined, so no time to make plans.
It's usually not cold in early November in College Station. Still very pleasant. Usually. Thanksgiving time is the big turnaround in weather.... And it's a great time to plant perennials and let them get established before summer comes along next year...
For personal reasons, I wish it were being held in October, and October does give the plants a little longer to establish before frost, but Nov 4 it is!

If I win the lottery, can I come too? (That's about what it would take, I'm afraid!)
