Don't remember who was looking for Marti, but I found her in the other room, sent her a message and this was her reply!

Name: Mary (Marti) Nelson
Somerset, KY

Havn'thad much to say. But have been watching all you girls and guys. I'm getting ready to leave for Calif in 38 days and have a part time job from June 22 til July 5th, so will be very busy and off the computer most of that time.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the update LK!

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks LK. It was me who wanted to hear from Marti. She was going to trade plants with me. Yellow Daylilys for Jonquils and I've not heard from her since she asked if I wanted postage or bulbs, and I told her bulbs would be fine.

My Daylilies have been beautiful and the Deer have found those on the back side of the fence.

Edited to change bulbs...Marti was suppose to send Daffodils, not Jonquils.

Oh dahtzu, hate to hear the deer have had an evening meal off the daylilies.....darn it. That is so disappointing when you have waited a year for them to bloom.

LK, I have two mandavillas, if you don't want to count the 100 in the past I have killed.....is there some trick to these? I have a terrible time with them. In the house they just drop leaves like crazy, as if I am not watering them enough....are they water hogs like an ee? The leaves turn brown and off they go.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

EVENING ALL Fay Get the IRISH SPRING HUNG AROUND Telling you it works , well I have about two more hours before my body will give out & I Have a few more Plants to get into the ground & More MULCH To Spread so back later.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Have you guys ever seen the photos that tomtom post from japan on his container plants? His containers are amazing!

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1185118/

I was going to do drip irrigation on my containers this year....was is the key word in that statement...rofl. Most still are not planted.... ;) Plants are ready sitting around in their little plastic containers....

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Faye just came in from spraying deer repellent on the lilies. I refuse to give up without a fight. :))

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Wow, TomTom has a nice green thumb! Love his flowers!
I buy new mandavilla's every year, as they don't winter here at all. Even if I bring them inside. But I have them in full sun, and they do OK! Yes, they take lots of water. This one is in a hanging basket, and I may put it in a pot.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Callas are my latest addiction. Well what the heck, isn't most everything? Several of mine haven't bloomed yet, just cut what had and stuck them in a frog on top of the vase. There were lots of duplicate blooms so I was able to fill it up. I wanted to pick up my MIL one day this week so she could see the gardens and had planned to give her the bouquet since the Irises she loves so much are done. Turns out she's not feeling well and sounds like she might have the flu. Instead I gave the vase to a neighbor yesterday in exchange for a few of her tomato and pepper plants. Her face just lit up and said she'd never seen such purdy blooms. Then she said "OMG, what kind of flowers are these? They don't look real and they feel like plastic."

Faye, I feel your pain. Last year the deer used so many of my Daylily buds as evening snacks. What a helpless feeling seeing them mowed down the next morning and have waited two years to see a lot of them bloom. I've tried Irish Spring soap, Susie, but the deer just stomp it in the ground. Don't know what your secret is but would like to know. In the meantime, I'm still using Liquid Deer Fence. Good stuff and it works for rabbits too.

The Mandevilla you gave me eons ago, happ, has buds again. Amazing, since I thought it died last Winter in our garage. The leaves had yellow splotches and most of them fell off. The poor plant was pretty much naked when I brought it back out at the end of April, but she's made a tremendous come-back, and is still one of Hubby's favorite plants, placed in one of his favorite spots.....right between the garage doors. 0:)

Susie, check out this Daylily from you. Magic Dawn a.k.a. Howdy. I'm thinking it should be moved to my Spider garden?

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Well that magic Dawn sures likes it there the 1st year i planted them they hardly got very tall them the next year wow they shot up really tall above the rest.

Here is what I was working on today after putting it off the last 2-3 yrs :( hope to finish off the east side tomorrow
this is the NORTH SIDE .

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm loving it. I think it's one you sent me last Fall and the scapes are at least 4' tall.

Your new bed is looking good :) Keep up the good work and steady as you go no matter how long it takes. One of my favorite late Mom's sayings was "Rome wasn't built in a day."

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Very nice garden!

Have a real pretty daylily blooming today. It is small but pretty. I took a pic of it, but don't know where I put the camera down. Sheesh

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks for all the sympathy and advice to get rid of the Deer, I will try it all. Today we went to Lowe's and started the process of building another raised bed to move Daylilies from the Dear side of the fence. LOL, yep we really got a large start, we came home with 8 large bags of Miracle Grow Garden Soil. We will only need at least 20 more. Then comes all the Top Soil, and Mulch that the raised bed will require, and of course we have to have something to hold all that dirt & etc. in place. And before we can even start with the dirt, we have to kill the grass, what the lack of rain hasn't already killed. We are hoping to widen the bed on the inside of the fence and bring the outside Daylilies in. Now, if the Deer fine the Lilies in the front of the house, there is no way we can do over that space, it's the length of the house. And still have 3 other raised beds that have lily's. I hate a Deer! I have worked so hard that sometimes it's hurts to stand up, then that beast destroys everything.

Beautiful place Faye. Love the glads. I just planted some this spring. They are behind my lilies. Hope they get enough sun, there are no buds on them. Should they bloom this year?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

You guys have beautiful blooms, makes me want one of everything, and a gardener to take care of them...rofl.

Glads bloomed for me the first year they were planted Crit, I can't overwinter them here in the ground. I tried last year and not a one came up..... ;( so I bring them in like alot of the other bulbs.

Beautiful bed susie, that is gonna be great. Love the rocks.

Wanted you all to see one of my planted city barrels. The hibiscus are bright bright yellow, sorry about the camera doesn't get it too well. Can't wait for the tree thing can't think of the name to start blooming again. It is pink if I remember correctly. I remember one of you saying you had lots yours, dang can't think of the name....

Oleander.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

GM < Laundry started , Daddy still sleeping , Critters are fed COFFEE IS READY :) They say Rain is on the way this Afternoon so I Hope to get out & Finish off the New bed Not allot to do on it yet .

I had Ordered so many small TREE"S & Bushes & so Decided they Needed to get into the ground to grow better so this is why I cleaned out around the garage to get them into the ground . Now I just hope they survive :)

I Leave my Glads right in the ground here but i have them in POTS DOWN INTO THE GROUND & they do fine as long as i throw straw over them after they are done blooming .

well guess i better get off here you all have a great day .

Love all the blooms My Daylilies are just starting to get buds .

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning Susie! How is Daddy doing with the Margaret situation? Is he getting used to the fact she is not coming back?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

deejay your glads come back for you? I didn't put straw down but they did have mulch over them. Dang I would love to have them winter over. Are yours planted on the south side of something? Mine were on the east side of the house. Did you get to go to bingo?

Linda Kay, that is what that is...rofl, an oleander. This is my first time ever having one. We get 35.00 a barrel to plant, that includes dirt and all the plants (money comes from our plant sale). I have more than that in the barrel but I try to find something I want to keep over the winter to put in the barrels instead of letting it all die when frost hits. Wish the tropical hibiscus was blooming better, they are bright bright yellow. Can you tell me do the oleander need a lot of water, fertilizer, or ?

Thumbnail by happgarden
FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Beautiful barrel Happ! I used to have a hibi like that one, I think it is one that I lost this winter. I know nothing about oleanders at all. Don't even know if I've ever seen one bloom.

As for glads, I lift them here even though I probably wouldn't have to. I don't have any at my house even though they are my favorite flower. Too much shade and they just stretch to the moon. I used to have them at the golf course in some beds there. When I would lift the bulbs in the Fall they would be fist sized. Some of the most gorgeous flowers ever.

I don't grow them here, but they grow wild all over the p lace. There are a lot of them in the medium strip going down the highways, and they only get what water we get from rain, which is not much lately! So they are pretty hardy, and they come back every year.

This site may help you out.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Afternoon all
well it is trying to rain took daddy into town after lunch with me had to go get me more coffee so i will have it in the morning but had to have a cup this afternoon .
As for Margaret She will be coming home for a couple days to be with daddy for their aniversary NEXT WEEK
& then she is going back down to her daughters I have not told daddy yet . just don't want to give him more upset at this time .

As for my Glads they are all out in the SOUTH Gardens I have them in the Big Gal Pots Deep in the Ground.
so far they have come back every year .
well my big sister is on & I need to go chat with her its been a long time since we chatted so you all have a great day

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Susie, that's not fair for your Dad for her to come for their anniversary! Just gets his hopes up, then for her to leave! Sounds like she is playing lots of mind games!
Glad you got your coffee. Enjoy your chat with your Sister!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Linda Kay, thank you for that site, it is amazing! Everything I needed to know! Can't wait to take cuttings! Doesn't sound all that difficult to start. Buh Hum Bug, spider mites, give me a break, between ee's, brugs, and now orleanders! Good grief! I must be relative to spider mites cause they like the same things I do! rofl.

Susie I feel for you, I hated every giving my mom news I knew she wouldn't like. I would fret for days, same as if I was a kid again....

rvnsbrk, if I am lucky there are 3 of those hibis in the planter, I should be able to send out cuttings this fall. That is if I don't kill them and someone doesn't take them. Never had anyone bother the planters but you never know. I have an ee I just love and have wanted to put it in there for years now, but if it came up missing I would just croak....

Pitch black out right now, we got rain yesterday, last night, and now again this morning and I needed it desperately. So far it has been a quiet good rain, with just cloud to cloud lightening.

DeeJay I can sympathize about the craziness at home sometimes....I use to think when I was in car driving maybe I would just start out the interstate driving and when I ran out of gas I would find a job and just blend into the scenery....rofl. Course we can't do that so we just pull our big girl pants up and go mow...rofl.....

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

yep pants pulled up & front yard mowed & now I'll go get daddys lunch then back out to get the back done that takes the longest to do :)

back soon

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I hope you have a riding lawn mower?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Oh deejay, you made me laugh out loud at work...rofl.....cracked me up.....

I have a headache as I took aspirins, that didn't work so I ate lunch, and that didn't work so I have convinced myself chocolate would get rid of it.... ;) least it tastes good... so looking forward to the weekend. Got a bunch of swaps to catch up on.

Hey Debra, where are you girly girl? We are gonna start worrying about you again... ;) I know you have some pretties blooming.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sure hope she is still not wet in the basement! She may be with her Sister?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)
