New Bees 8/23/10 friends - new and old...Come in
Great pictures everybody ;-) Feels good to get things done to your house. I love that kind of stuff. I have been busy shoveling sheep manure out of this lady's barn to use at the Nursery. I didn't know that you can use sheep manure right away without it breaking down. Has something to do with a sheep's digestion system I'm told. The stuff I got was I swear 2 feet deep and at least 2 years old though. A lot of work getting it up but hopefully worth it. The lady has Scotch Holland cows. I had never seen one before. They look like miniature cows with long scraggly hair. Sweet little guys, lol.. I never met an animal I didn't love. Courtney has the camera in Florida but I will try to take pics for you guys another time. Hope all is well for everyone and talk to you soon !

Hey guys.. question for you experts.. Can I root cuttings from Ipomoea? Are they pretty easy to root? I propagated 1396 Coleus cuttings today from 56 4" Coleus plants! Just wondered if anyone had done Ipomoea before and had any suggestions.. Thanks!
Vines are usually easy to root. You can root in damp soil or glass of water but they will root.
Petunias will also. Which kind are you trying to root of the ipomoeas?
By the way, great going with the ones you just did. I know you are tired.
Oops sorry. Sweet Potato Vine. I noticed they have nodes about 3 inches apart. I have about 24 4" pots to propagate. I want to put them in hanging baskets. They're so pretty. Have lots of Hostas to divide, too.
Ipomoea (Morning Glories) seem to grow pretty easy for me from seed. I have done transplants starting from seed also. They make an interesting windowsill vine during the winter, but with fewer flowers.
I have two huge coleus plants I'm about ready to toss because I just don't have the space inside to keep them inside for the winter. Let me know if you want them, Mechelle
Al
SPV will root if you stick it in soil or water - easy peasy though some do better when transplanted to soil than others. The one I've had the hardest time with is the tri-color. Others are easy...
Sweet Potatoes are also ipomeas similar to morning glories (same family of plants). Yes, I remember growning them as a kid's project. The whole taters can be speared with toothpicks and suspended in a mason jar half filled with water on a windowsill for lavish vine foliage. Actually the sprouted tubers can be chunked up with one "eye" sprout each piece and stored in loose peat moss until they start to grow, then transplant into pots or garden soil.

Good Morning everyone ;-) I am going to spend the morning collecting cuttings from around my yard and doing some much needed yard work. All of my Brugmansia cuttings from last year didn't do very well with the exception of a few of them. I m going to take them all to the greenhouse. I was wondering what I was going to do with all of them this year! It has been so dry here that everything looks horrible. We are in a drought they say. Guess that means we will have an extra cold winter :(
The SPV I have is this one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54018/
I love the colors. It's so fall-like.
Al, I will take those Coleus. I will take care of them and send them back next year!
Have a good day everybody.. Hugs!
Morning peeps - I'm off to work;o)
Mechelle, that Carolina Bronze is beautiful and you're right - very fall-like - lol. Never though of it like that before.
Mechelle - the very last post on this thread someone is offering Coleus cuttings if you're interested;o)
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1132652/
locakelly ..... not sure if mechelle is interested in that coleus post .... but I sure was!!!! Thanks for posting!
You're very welcome Crit;o)
mekos will ginger root grow if you pot it and keep it in the green house, this is for cooking if not im gona try it and see what it does. im crazy. nettie
oldest son has a birthday sunday think ill make him some brownies, he likes anything sweat he will be almost 40 i think ican,t remember anything, love nettie im going to bed.
kelly yes we get snow sometimes more than we won,t i don,t like over 3inches at a time. i don,t have any boots and don,t wony any just stay inside if it gets very deep.children love it not me we usually loose our power a few years back it was off 2weeks didn.t likr that at all. love nettie
Nettie from what I have read the ginger root will grow if kept in a greenhouse or heated with good light inside. I keep my other gingers inside the greenhouse during winter because my Blue gingers are not hardy here. The butterfly gingers are but the others are not so I have to pot those up and bring them in. I found some of the ginger you use in cooking and they gonna send me some of it in a few weeks because he is rooting me some verigated spiral gingers too, and said he could toss in one of those also. I'll keep it in the greenhouse till spring.
You get some rest Nettie. We had a birthday party for our grandson yesterday and I was there most of the day with him. He turned 7 and he was the one who we took fishing and he caught his first fish this summer.Took Kaylee and she entertained the whole house full. We had a wonderful time. With this cooler weather, it is easier to go out a bit now.
mekos i found a picher plant aat lows today it is in a clear plastic container how long will it live in their do i need to take it out and put it in smothing different if so what love nettie got a poor little sun dew also they gave me 100 off it cause it looks sick got any advice for me please.
Those have to be watered in rain water or distilled water. They can have NO chemicals or minerals at all in soil or water. I would take them out of their pots and replant in a mix of perlite and spaghnum moss and water from bottom of container. The pitchers and VFT can stay outside all winter. They are hardy and need the cold to allow them to go dormant and even if they freeze up in the pot of snow or ice, they will thaw and grow off beautiful in spring. Just remember, city water will kill them. Probably Lowes watered with their city water and that is why that one looks sick. I would wash off the roots asap with rain water. Then re-pot them. Hope that helps Nettie. I love mine.
thanks mekos i have thought about doing this for a while but thought i saw s post where you had some and thought you would know love and hugs when you have time let me know if i need to do a small bog to put in the greenhouse for those two little plants or if they will live in the kitchen window until spring love and hugs nettie
mekos thank you again love nettie and goodnight,
We learned about making rain barrels as a method of water conservation but it would also be good for you CP loving gardeners. I am going to set one up at the nursery. I have some info on it if anyone is interested.
I went and got a few loads of sheep manure this past week. My first time using it but I am told I can use it right now instead of waiting for the horse manure to age. I asked our horticulturist at the MG class and he said we can use it now because a sheep has 4 stomachs with a high acid content which makes it come out "ready".
I am also working on a compost bin. All of my greehouse cuttings, spilled dirt, all that stuff go into a "compostable materials" bin inside the greenhouse and then gets dumped outside when it gets full.
The girls worked with me in the greenhouse yesterday for the first time. It was great. We divided 32 Hosta plants and ended up with 170. We trimmed the roots before repotting and we referred to the cut as a "bikini wax". Haircuts on top and bikini waxes on bottom LOL.. It was a fun day.
We are going to have a light frost tonight so I am taking as many cuttings as I can today from around the house to the nursery. I have a few more Coleus to propagate.. so that's what my day will consist of. Got the phone and fax line set up at the nursery yesterday. I am looking at an opening date of Feb 12th. I wanted to be open the weekend before Valentine's Day. Well I better quit writing this book and get outside! Have a good day everyone!
mekos how much sun light can these plants stand this book i have doesn,t have basic stuff in it, makes me crazy love nettie

Morning all - Happy weekend everyone! We finally got our two main rooms finished and started moving furniture back in last week. This seems to be taking forever to put on 4 coats of polyvarnish , but the coats have to cure completely dry before adding more. Got the sofa and TV back in place just yesterday. Only one more room to finish in the next couple of weeks. It looks nice so far.

Hi everyone.. I need some help/advice/insight.. Have any of you ever rooted hydrangea cuttings? I just clipped back all of my hydrangeas and I plan to propagate them. I have a mixture of softwood and green cuttings and plan on using root hormone with a pro mix of peat, vermiculite, perlite, dolomite in 4"pots. They'll be in the greehouse, but just wondered if anyone had any secrets to share ;-)
HI all.. and good morning.
I have some purple wandering jew that I plant in front of the taller plants in my whiskey barrels to trail over the front. There is too much for me to bring in for the winter, so I usually just let them freeze. Most of them have roots already on them. If anyone wants some of these starts, I am sending them out for $2.50 which is the average price of postage. That is a bundle of 6-8 very nice starts. D-mail me if you want to save some of these from certain death! :-))
Nettie, they can have full sun.
Mechelle, I root lots of them and I just cut the pieces and stick them in a good potting soil and keep damp till you see new growth. It will look like dead sticks, for a bit as it works on the root growth, then you will see green tidbits popping out all over the sticks.Root hormone is good too. But you might want to keep the bottom of the pots warm. I usually root those in summer when it is hot out. They seem to do better for me at that time, but inside if you can find a warm place to keep them or heat mat, should be just fine. Azaleas root better during july. Some plants just need that warm bottom to make the roots grow. I'm gonna send you a d-mail, look for it please.
Mechelle, have you tried the oxygenated water yet??? Put 1/2C. peroxide into 1 gal milkjug of water. helps plants to get oxygen to the roots. Yep, Mekos is right Just cut and poke them in the dirt.
mekos i will be looking for the d mail love nettie
I'm sorry Nettie, the d-mail was to Mechelle about germinating some seeds for her greenhouse.
mekos ....... I need a warm bottom for me to do well too. :-))
ridesredmule....... is that peroxide in water good for any plants you are trying to root?
I went to the nursery today to buy some rootone, because I hadn't been able to find it anywhere else. They told me it and everything like it had been pulled from the shelves this summer. The FDA banned something that was in it. They are coming out with something new (I'm SURE it wont be as good!!!! Darn FDA anyway!) and they thought they would have it by February. I really wanted it for things I am trying to root to save over the winter. I got something else that is a root stimulator that you mix in water. I usually don't use any hormone, but was going to give it a try.
Crit
Crit, try WalMart .. If not, I can order for you through the nursery.. And anything else you might need as well.
mekos im sory i thought you ment me im crazy can,t be helped i think i was born this way i looked every where for a pot to do a bog garden in and finally bought a horse feeding bucket i think it will be deep enoiugh its not as deep as the horses feed trough but should hold water fine. love and hugs nrttie .
robin may we have a new thread love nettie .this one is real long. i love your rose i have a tea rose that color and smels good. i think it is a grenada like the ford car i yhink ive got three of them. if the grand sons dog hasn,t dug them up carma loves to dig a hole to sleep in ive tried every thing to stop her.
Mechelle,
Walmart was the first place I looked. So then I started checking anywhere that sold plants. I finally went to the nursery, and they are the ones that told me about the pull.
If you could get me some, that would be awesome!!!
Thanks!
Crit
I wondered if anyone would have an answer for this?
My Castor Bean plants have put up huge spikes full of seed pods. They are so heavy they are pulling the plant over. I have been harvesting seeds from them as they had groups of 4-6 pods and would all dry about the same time. These must have 20 or 30 pods on them. I wondered if I should cut off the stalk and let it dry in the house so the plants didn't hang over, or leave them on the plant until the pods dried. I don't like them hanging so low to the ground. I tried to keep them up by hooking over the fence, but the wind sometimes pulls them off the fence. They are pretty good size pods and have been there for a while.
