The cat looks like he is an evil magician. I love cats, but my dogs don't.
I know all parts of the castor beans are poison and the Daturas and Angels Trumpet too.
I love Crystal Palace Lobelia, it's the best to me. The color is almost florescent
Sharon some Cordyline variety does grow here, I saw in my high desert garden book. I need to see if it is that one.
I like Crystal Palace too Dawn. But, for baskets I like the trailers. CP would make a nice ground cover. She didn't say what she wanted it for. Unless I missed it.
No she didn't say. I can only grow it in part shade or it gets fried.
I have several areas by the golf course at the end of the greenbelt where our sprinklers intrude on some of the golf courses "dirt". I thought I could just throw a few seeds that way and maybe we would have a beautiful blue hue in the spring.
Making a trip to the nursery tomorrow with an arborist from the HOA Landscape company. The nursery is getting a very large shipment in of exotic succulents. When we get finished with the new pots by the guard entrance, I will take photos and post.
Mine grows in full sun everywhere. It is like a neon light when you drive by the house.
Thanks Mary. I am going to have to make the trip to Spokane, 100 miles, so will hopefully find some on line down there. I can't run from store to store. That is why I try to shop on line. Costco, WalMart, and maybe an appointment is my limit.
Dave, do you have a supplier for green 6" growing pots? Also, have you ever used grow bags? I bought some when Loraine had her coop a few years back and I don't know if I was using them wrong or what, but the roots never seem to be able to catch hold in the soil in those because they don't have solid sides. They get moved and there goes any grasp they had going.
Am I doing something wrong?
Jeanette .... Maybe you should prune that one Jm that is what the person at this web site recommends
http://www.freeplants.com/growing-japanese-red-maples.htm
Dave ... I noticed some of the seeds from my large JM on the ground .... should I collect them?
I have never been to a Costco .... I surfed the net there is one close to my daughter's residence. Is it like Sam's Club or BJs?
Sharon .... thanks for sharing those wonderful pictures.
LOVE ALL of YOU MARY
PS ... still looking for creeping phlox
I did not get that from him Mary. Do you belong to his group? I think Dave does. Why would I cut it off? I don't even know what it is. It might be a big one like yours. I am waiting for Dave to tell me if he knows what it is.
I don't believe Costco is same as Sam's. They are wholesale/retail. Large quantities only. Good for large families,or groups such as co-ops. I find that for just the 2 of us it doesn't pay other than for certain things they have that nobody else carries. Like the chrome shelving that we all use for seeds, or appliances, the oysters I love, only their brand of tuna (albacore), etc.
In Seattle, Costco has a restaurant supply where you can get good kitchen ware. They also have the chrome shelving parts that you can buy individually at that store where they don't have that in their regular stores.
Jeanette .... I came across that site while surfing the net looking for info on when to harvest JM seeds. i do not belong to it.
I would prune the top 1/3 of that JM to encourage it to become bushy. MARY
I might too if I knew it was a mini. But, what if it is a big one like yours? It would look pretty funny wth a foot high trunk.
Dave, where are you?????
It needs to be prune ... esp if it is like my mama tree.
Now is when it should be pruned.

MARY
sorry for the long silence. yes I joined the free plants group it was like $600.00 spread out over like 6 months. I imediately posted liners for sale and sold a ton of them. Its a great site if you want to do a nursery in your back yard and are able to sell from your driveway. They are also very strict on knowing genus species and cultivar on what you sell. HOA's usually have rules against any such business.
Jeanette: I believe its a bloodgood or one like mine in the front yard thats 20 ft. I am not sure of its variety.
yes please start collecting seeds for me.
I recieved a package of ajuga yesterday and they were really bad. the seller shiped them priority on wednesday ad 1/3 was melted gooey stinky mess. I contacted the seller and have yet to check my email to see if they emailed me.
I have been abe to stick 100 cells each day this week although its still early in the week and the high today is suosed to be 101 plus a heat factor. I don't care anything over 92 is unbearable. I am so glad I have my timers this year. they have been a god send.
bulk lobelia seeds hmmm I will post again in a few once I get through my email and the free plants site. They are very helpfull beginers that are all going through the learning process. some know more than others.
stay cool and Jeanete I would let the jm's grow to about 4 feet then light pinch. The site that says to cut them at the top is working towards a sshort bush tree not a big bloodgood type.
oh yeah 6" pots growersupply.com but you have to buy like 100 of them. I would try to find someone to split the order with. I would but my next weeks allowance is going toward cornus kuosa (spelling?) for nex spring sales.
I will be right back
Dave

I would try these places because they are upfront about perrienial vs annual. Have you thought about a wild flower mix??? that way its always in bloom.
I hope this helps. There is something for everyone some even have helliboris seeds
Dave
Dave, this isn't the one that was the Bloodgood, but you think it was one LIKE the Bloodgood? OK, but the leaves are nothing like the 2 Bloodgoods that you sent me.
Mary, I don't want a bush. I'm not sure I can find the email he sent me at the time. Bet I deleted it. But, I don't think he knew what it was at that time. But, may have known more what it was like. So, maybe it was like the Bloodgoods.
Mary forgot to tell you that there is a $50 annual dues at Costco.
lol Sctatch a trip to Costco .
Gathered some JM seeds. They are now enjoying my AC.
Should they be starting to fall now? I have really not pat any attention to them before.
JB ... would you please say something? anything .. just wanting to know you are OK.
love you all MARY
Meet Michael Miller ... he bloomed today
Sorry I have been absent so long...I have not been well, but I am better now.
Dave ~ That is weird as I was going to suggest that "free plants" website to you and you already did that. Also, I have a Gilbert Wild catalog I will send to you, unless you already get it. It had a lot of daylilies and right now very low prices. (You could check online, as they are having an "end summer" clearance.) Have you started any lobelia seeds??
Jeanette ~ Are you doing any cloning right now? How is your Shark steamer working now?
Lee ~ I am sorry for your loss. There are no words to say to ease your pain...still your attitude about the whole process is great. It will happen to all of us sooner or later. We never seem to be ready for it anyway, even if we know it will be sooner, especially one so close as our mother and the love she gave us our whole life.
Sharon ~ Great photos! How are you holding up in this heat? ( Do you live on a golf course??)
JB ~ You, too! "Hot enough for you?" Don't you love it when they say that? GRRR! Oh, that's right...##@@%$&!! Now you can understand that, right? It is getting a little bit cooler, but still in the high 80's most days. The other day, we had thunderstorms in the mountains...the Sierras...and then we got the humidity, and then it got dark with clouds, but no rain. It smelled as though it rained...maybe it did and it evaporated before it reached the ground...(Verga??) Virga? (sp?)
Mary ~ Yes, you have been a busy gardener....
Well, I must go now...I have been updating the laptop and it is threatening to restart, so I had better send this before I lose it!
Take care everyone!
Evelyn
Evelyn, our home is on the greenbelt about 7 homes above the 7th tee on the golf course. When we purchased our lots there were sites available but we were told not to buy on the golf course unless we wanted to be dodging golf balls.
Costco has quality, Sam's has quantity. Sam's is owned by Walmart. I buy my meat at Costco except hamburger. I purchase my laundry and paper products from Costco. I purchase my produce from Whole Foods. I have learned to control myself because Costco is the best at making you into a compulsive shopper. My brother that is a year younger, has not missed a Costco. If there is one in any town he is visiting, he will go and look around. I buy my blue jeans there for $19 instead of paying $98 at Nordstroms.
Evelyn, I am sorry you have been ill. I hope you are on the mend.
Jnette, when I am in Spokane, I will come visit you and bring your deliveries. All I want in return is a cup of tea and your beautiful view from the porch.
The last we heard from JB she was expecting a bad storm. Hope she, her cats and family are OK.
Thanks for the seed websites Dave. I am going tomorrow to the greenhouse and hopefully I will remember my camera.
Take care all my friends. Luke is here tonight on his way back to Spokane with his other grandmother. We are going into the garden and do some gardening now that it is cooler.
Yes Costco has quality. However they don't always carry the same things. Besides the regular things they always carry, they will get things in and if you see them and want them you better grab them then and not figure on getting them the next time. Possibly seasonal things more than anything. They will get plants or something in and the next day they will be gone.
Sharon, I really don't want you to be disappointed with my view. It is simply natural and a lot of trees. :)
Evelyn is your fever gone? Was it a flu, or?? Do hope you are feeling better now.
Enjoy that little guy Luke while he is there Sharon.
Nice guys, nice. Oh yeah Sharon, my fire extinguisher was bled so that is where all my water and bubbling came from, thank God.
I found a house I like, but I doubt we can afford it, and rent this one out. I used to grow Lobelia in full sun at my old house but I have not had luck with it here. I think it needs some dampness at all times, because here it seems to die fast if it is not moist.
I grow lobelia in full sun here but it does get irrigated twice a day. The best plants of it were this last summer and they were self sowed from last year.
Jnette, any porch in a cool area with GREEN trees to me is beautiful. You must understand, in the desert we do not really have green trees. They are kinda green trees want to be's. You do not realize they are not green until you leave town and see how dark green trees really are.
Jnette is so right about Costco. If you see something you want, you had better buy it because it will be gone before the end of the day. But I have learned that even tho their merchandise is calling my name to take them home, I do not need any more THINGS....
Delay, Baby Luke just woke up. I have to get up early to take every one to airport. Have a great morning tomorrow and i will check in later in the day.
Had a disappointing shipment of Cactus when we went to the nursery. Just a bunch of junk. Now the search is on. Need to find an expert on DG.
Sharon, the family of the man in Vegas made a plea to anyone who was in Cosco to talk with them, because there was some things that investigators from the family don't think made sense at the incident in Cosco in Vegas. The incident that you saw. A family member was pleading at a surf competition a couple of days ago.
Hi Everyone, That storm I was talking about never materialized. We still have had NO rain. Irrigation everywhere. Even in the corn fields and you know, when you have to irrigate corn it is dry. Pumpkin fields are hurting big time. Blooms are big and pretty, but without rain, forget pumpkins. The man across the street has had the irritation guns on everyday for the past two days. He will run out of water soon.
More of our little trees are going. We are irrigating also, but the sun is so hot it dries it out before they can drink with their baby roots. Another year shot.
I am not in a very good mood. I walked the dog and it is so hot I feel crappy. I am going to go into town and get supplies but I need to get some things done here first. I wanted to check in with you all. My life is so boring when I can not be in the GH. Yesterday I transplanted the camellias....the stock plants. I am going to try and propagate them this year. They are three years old and hopefully ready. I trimmed the Maid of Orleans jasmine the other day and took a bunch of cuttings to my friend at the Garden Center. Hopefully she will be able to root them. There were just too many for me to deal with.
Today is in the 90s again and our 7th heat wave of the summer is still going on. As much as I hate to say it, we need a good coastal storm. LOL Of course then it just dumps 5 inches of rain on us and it runs off quick as it comes down. You just can not win.
Hugs to you all. I am on the down side just now. I have so much to do and just too hot to do it, I get depressed. Be good ....... JB
JB, Just a thought when reading your post, but are you ready for the bad weather with your greenhouse? Checked all the seams to make sure there is nowhere the wind can get hold of and rip those panels off again etc? I remember you out there in that storm and it is so scary.
Even as hot as it is, now is the time you need to look it over and make sure you are ready for the bad weather.
Isn't it awful to have to think about that when it is so miserably hot? Sorry, don't snap my head off, I need it. LOL
Well, gotta run, have to make a trip down to Idaho and get back in time for a plumber. I'm having trouble with my pressure tank. Hope it doesn't cost much. Just a trip charge up here breaks the bank.
Forgot, Dawn, what were you talking about something that happened in Las Vegas?
Mary: every area is different. I know our seeds are hanging on but starting to turn brown on the wings. the brow wings are the key to being ready. I am planning to sow a bunch od JM seeds this year and repot them as soon as they sprout. I must of lost 50 of them just because the freaking cat made a daybed out of their tray. I have some plox coming in to take cuttings from. I just hope its big enough to get going right away.
Jeanette: There are a lot of large palmate leaved JM's out there. I think mine is bloodgood but I could be wrong. Its just fun starting them from seed.
JB: I know this is going to sound wierd but have you thought about putting up say 25% shade over the trees? I remember we had one shade house that was an acre all by itself. flat room that could be bunched up to move the shade.
I planted a couple of red cardnal lobelia...perrienial here.
so any one want to trade weather with me. I am looking for low 90's and a breeze... I have a nice lazing hot 102 with the air being dryer than a popcorn fart....
I managed to do some stuff outside for 2 hours today. I had hoped to do some cuttings but it just was not happening. I want to get some of my asters cut as well as a small sweat box of black bamboo Bambusa nigra. I read somewhere it can be done as cut in half and lay down with the node poking up. I will let you know how it went.
Oh yea my red twig dogwoods did a funny thing to me. I poped the lid to water it and one of the cuttings had formed roots on the growth end. I guess the humidity was perfect for him.
ok so who is wanting lobelia plugs... I know someone asked me about them, or was it just a cute joke about me growing everything that comes down the pike????
well have fun today....isn't fun one of the best things to have?
Dave
jeanette: I believe you asked about cheap pots for extra plants you have. I was looking in one of my catalogs and spotted this and thought you might like to see it. I hope it helps Dave

Sharon and Dawn ~ Have you been to the cactus and succulents forum? http://davesgarden.com/community/forumes/f/succulents/all
I suppose I would go there if I lived in 100°+ for most of the summer. I would not go to the lengths you two go to to keep my plants alive, much less thriving. Maybe JB and Dave should go there too...LOL!
But they probably have too much humidity, right? Even though I am from El Paso, I do not like the desert or cactus. The only time I like the desert is in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom. Oh, and to sleep under the stars is an amazing memory. When I was about 7 years old I went camping with my parents in the desert. There were 100 gazillion stars and I never really saw so many in my entire life. Even here, where we live, you have to wait for winter to see a good number of them and even then then city lights are ever-encroaching...so the view will always be obscured.
Sharon ~ Do you do all the landscaping for the whole greenbelt? Are you so close to the golfcourse that golfballs go into your windows? Maybe you could draw us a map as I am trying to picture your home in/near the golfcourse.
Jeanette ~ Which hand-held steamer did you get? I have the Shark that came with the floor steam mop that I got at Sam's Club a couple of years ago. Neither one has the pockets.
JB ~ When you are ill, it is worse as the only thing is to be sure to try and keep everything alive...if I miss one watering I could lose a lot. Especially those in pots. So I had better get dressed, as DH has gone to town to get supplies. I thought I was over this "bug", whatever....I feel feverish, but I must water. Then I can decide once I am out if I feel well enough to do more. I did too much yesterday. I should have just came home after the chiro...I get depressed if I am so far behind in all things pertaining to my garden plans...seed starting, bed renewing, mulching, etc....and I want to start some things from cuttings as well.
Well, for everyone's sake, I am hoping that the weather will cool off soon.
I cannot sit here any longer. I must get moving. It even hurts my fingers to type.
TTYL...
Delphinium 'Blue Mirror'...in the new bed...
My daughter, Lisa, visited today. After a short lunch we went to one of her favorite stores (Ross Dept Store) hoping to find some outfits for her to add to her wardrobe. Ross is another one of those hit or miss stores. She did not find clothes to her liking.
They did have a considerable number of heavy glazed ceramic pots that were nicely priced. (Example .... 3 gallon size for under $12.)
We then went to a Harbor Freight store to look at the leaf shredders. Since my primary interest was to use it mainly to shred leaves this fall, we both concluded that the cheaper one (priced at $70) was better suited for the desired task. The more expensive one (Twice the price) has a very small opening to funnel the leaves through. The cheaper one has a giagatic opening to for leaf desposits. I used a 20% off in store coupon to bring the cost to $56 plus tax. I also purchased an extended 2 yr warranty for $10. (I plan to shred a lot of leaves each fall)
I collected more JM seeds. My grandson and his friend gave me a weird look when they saw me on my hands and knees crawling on the front lawn.
It was hot and muggy again. No idea when we will receive rain. Strangely, the climate when I took the trash outside was quite plesant.
Here is a picture of the electric leaf shredder I purchase.
Love you all
MARY
Evelyn, so sorry you aren't feeling well. It is so difficult to do things when you aren't feeling good. Just have to force yourself.
I got the Shark hand held steamer Evelyn. I hope it will help me clean my kitchen. I find it so difficult to clean the back splash around the sink and over the range and also the stove top (glass). I have arthritis in my shoulders and elbows so I can't reach real good. Maybe it will make it easier.
Thanks for the tip on the pots Dave. Nope, I am looking for 6 inchers. I am going to give up and plant them in the 8 inch pots I have already.
JB, did you realize Dave was not censored??????
Good leaf shredder mary. Be sure you wear one of those safety helmets with a shield. Those things are dangerous if you happen to get something besides leaves in them. Also, for your eyes.
Dave .... what was the source of the JM seeds you planted?
Yes, I was so offended by the F word I had to take a pause. Actually, I thought, oh oh, but JB, Dave is a guy. Looks like it is only offensive when it comes from one of us sweet females.
Dawn, I was not at Costco during the shooting. It is a big mess. Everyone that witnessed the tragedy, saw him move his shirt and show his gun. Before that he was told to hit the ground and he did not. Instead he moved his shirt. At that moment he was blown away with 7 bullets to the chest. Unfortunately, policemen are trained to kill, not wound. I really think he was just showing he had a gun but wrong move. When a policeman tells you to hit the ground, you hit the ground. Of course, I would have a difficult time hitting the ground.
I went in to the back landscape at 12 noon and came back in at 4:10. I had a blast. I move some pots, fixed what was in the pots, reworked a bed that has great plants but the soil is disappearing. So I added some garden compost on top and then lightly watered it so it would sink. Then I soaked the granite and raked it, pulled horse grass out of the dicronda and clover. My lawn is dicondra and clover, not grass. Two small patches. The dog urine does not kill it and I love it. Mow & Blow guys come tomorrow. I cleaned up a bunch of stuff they do not even see. I had my i-pod playing Eric Clapton and I had a ball. It was 103 but we had a nice breeze and I was in the shade so it was great. Going back up in temperature Saturday.
I am not on the golf course. My house has a very large greenbelt park behind me. There are sidewalks on both sides that meet in the middle in several places. The side walk panels are 6' x 8'. A very large sidewalk. Our homes back landscape faces North and going Northeast down the sidewalk, I am 8 houses before you hit the golf course. I do not get golf balls.
I will go behind the house tomorrow and take a few photos taking you down the greenbelt to the golf course. I will start at the entrance. We are planting the cactus in pots by the guard station. I helped pick out the pots and the current cactus. I am going over to the cactus forum to see what I can find.
No I do not do the landscape on the greenbelt . I am the liaison with the landscape company for the board of the HOA. I am the Treasurer for the board and in charge of landscape because I have time for it and the board trusts me. The lead person and I meet once a week, when needed, to review plants that need to replaced. This last 12 months we have spent more than $100,000 removing landscape over 15 years old, redoing some major irrigation lines in an effort to cut down on water usage. The majority of the landscape in the greenbelt was planted before any homes were built. I know more than the landscape crew and I am very nice to the whole crew so they love me and do whatever I need done in the greenbelt.. I found many years ago sugar goes farther than vinegar.. As an example, once a month they power wash down the toddlers play lot, the tennis courts, the monkey bars for the older children and basketball court. When they do that, they power wash my back landscape wrought iron to control the bird droppings since I feed the birds. If they are driving up or down the street and see me unloading something heavy, they stop and help. But I am 68 and they are in their late 20s early 30s. They have just adopted themselves another mother.
Evelyn, I would not function in desert landscape. I mulch, preserve water, baby everything and have a beautiful landscape. I walk the landscape everyday and take a look to see what is going on. That stops a few problems before they get a head start. It is only heavy work when the temperature is above 108. Remember, we have no humidity so it is a dry heat, and I have learned to follow the shade. And I have a lot of shade.
Baby Luke is back home this evening. He is still adorable and always happy.
JB, I am so happy to hear from you. I was getting worried. I know how disappointing it is to put all that hard work into your landscape and have something happen to it that you have no control of or can do anything about. Depression is real sneaky. Just hanging around foe you to have a problem so it can jump right in and raise havoc. You just need to get up, stand in front of a mirror, turn around counter clockwise three times, wink at yourself and go about your business. Winking at yourself will make you laugh, therefore, making you happy. You will confuse the devil and I am totally convinced depression is the devil.
Love you all my friends. Have a great day tomorrow. I will not be on until late tomorrow again. Have to help a neighbor pick out plants at the nursery for planting for Friday for a party on Saturday. They got back tonight after 3 weeks on a cruise of Europe.
Sharon I have become convinced after reading your post that our plants are twinkies. We would never think of planting in the heat. They would not make it. We could leave the water running on them all day and they would not make it.
What kind of plants do you take out when they reach the ripe old age of 15? LOL, I thought you guys were suppose to be conserving water? Oh, I forgot golf courses do not conserve water. Where does your water come from?
Well, I have to go down and buy an 85 gallon pressure tank this morning guys. Mine is filling up with calcium deposits. Had the plumber here yesterday. so, gotta get going.
Yesterday morning we went down to do some shopping and had the heater on in the car. Today I think is going to be different. May not use the AC but probably won't need the heater either.
ttyl,
We took out an acre of Rosemary. It was over grown, ratty and being watered. We replaced it in some spots with water saving plants. But the majority we just cleaned up the rock ground cover and left it bare under the big trees I like bare.
Before I plant any plant I soak in a large tub of water with a dose of thrive and some kelp soak. I also make sure the soil where I am planting is moist. That eliminates the shock.
I am my way out. Just wanted to say Hi. SYL.
Good .... uhhhh afternoon??? yea thats it.
when did I use the f word... I am sorry if I let it slip. I thought the closest to the f word I got was in reference to being dry as a popcorn....
Todat 103 with heat index 110 and 50% humidity. I went outside for 2 hours and am soaked from the sweat. I took black bamboo cuttings and got a fla ready to stick this afternoon. Not sure if its going to be asters or penstomon.
Most of my Jm seeds are ones I collect or I buy from
http://www.angelgroveseeds.com
and other places it just depends on what I am doing for seed growth. I am sticking to the smaller stuff where its no bigger than a 10" or 3 gallon pot and I like to keep the plants small 24" and under is the goal. I really fell in love with scullcap. Mine is like 6" tall and covered in fuscia colored flowers I did a flat of cuttings that did quite well almost 100%
I think I get better results with the ones I collect or have friends that do it for me. I think some of the people on ebay sell green JM seeds as if the were ripe. I never had any luck with ebay's jm seeds. now other seeds are a different story.
Well no cuttings to stick oday. the day got away from me. I like to do my cuttings in the am as the heat does play a factor on how well they hold up. Yesterday I got may night and caradona salvia stuck but they are in the mint family so I am willing to bet I could stick a week old cutting and get it to root... ok maybe not a week old one.
I wanted to pass along a little tidbit. I ordered ground cloth and shade cloth from Growersupply.com on the 10th of July. I am still waiting for the delivery. I called last week and they gave me a story of "they sent an email ou stating they were out of 50% shade cloth and asked if I minded waiting for it to come in?" I would have thought they would send the case of flats and ground cloth while waiting for te shade cloth. I am not real happy at the moment. The manager stated he would substitute 70% for the 50% and get the cloth cut the next day and get it out to me asap. we are on day 9 of the "asap" shipping. If I don't have it in hand by monday I will be asking for a refund and take my business else where. A.M. Leonard stocks the same stuff and is fairly reasonable with over 100 years in business. I just though everyone would like to know this because you all know how much I liked growersupply. I think it was the paypal billing that helped keep me a customer. I guess I got lazy and did not like to wait for the 3 days to transfer money from paypal to my bank. Stepping down off my soapbox
Stay cool everyone and hae a great day Oh yea the pic is of scullcap
