Shoot I just remembered
Dave D-mail me address so I can mail JM seeds on Wed.

howdy:
had an epiffany today. why am I trying to crank out so many plants so darn fast??? I have decided to concentrate on just trying to keep stuff flowing and work more towards quality and specialty plants. Probably going to give up on the hostas next year as its a lot of work for a few bucks... still not sure as I do love them so much.
Mary is that a shotgun in your neighbors hands? ....
systemic is absorbed by both foliage and roots on most chemicals.
last week I got ajuga in the mail and half was melted like a salad in the microwave.... It might come back but we will see.
well its offical I am p'd off. my shade bed in the back yard is now a full sun bed. I have to move everyone from their home to a new bed . to top it off the area I have to put them is not ready yet as I don't want the window and siding guys trampelling them more. just have to baby them into spring.
weather today was 94 tomorrow 93 yippieeee. I am hopefull I will be able to pull my flats from 1/2 the nursery to laydown ground cloth. What a bummer it will be if I miss the window of cool air.
sorry to whine any one got any cheese?????
stay cool and take lots of breaks, gatoraide, pottassium works also. I have to take 2 everyday in the heat or I end up talking to ralph about a buick aka blowing chunks ... sounds like a joke I once heard....
Dave
Dave .... I am totally lost with you explanation of systemic .... completely in the dark!
Can I use it on say marigolds .... cuke plants .... petunias?
Thank God I do not have .... well have not seen any white insects around here.
A question for Dave
Why would my neighbor yield a shotgun?
Mary remember what I said that anything that bites into the plant, any part of the plant, dies? ???? Don't use it near any cukes, tomatoes, or any other edibles.
I hope never to use it.
Well you guys were talkative today. I had a busy day away from the house. Went to my manicurist, then to a yogurt swirl, then to Smith's, a grocery store, Home Depot, CVS Pharmacy, Lowes, Trader Joe's and then home. I left at 10:25 and returned at 3:15. Then I needed to drive the young man across the street to football practice because his mother had to take the dog to the eye doctor. Home Depot and Lowes had nothing in their nurseries to buy.
Jnette, I love your very blue/iris colored petunias. That is what they are suppose to look like, in very nice cool weather. I do not grow them here. How much do you pay for your cordelines?
Dave, when we did the remodel of the old house the contractor found so many things the original builder took shortcuts, not to code, to save money. As far as choosing what you are going to grow, I agree, make it something you love to look at and grow. My favorite as coleus, cannas and hardy hibiscus but I only grow for my personal pleasure. Answer me a question. If a plant is registered or patented, can you clone and sale them?
I ordered some new rain lilies from Plant Delights. They were $18 a piece but great colors. I hope they multiply like the one I currently have.
Thanks everyone for the comments on Luke. He is just always so happy it is difficult not to just love him.
JB, you and I are having the same problem. I have never sweat in my life. I could be out working in 100 degree heat and I was bone dry. Then last April 2009 I got sick with the lung problem and now I sweat like running water, especially in the back of my hair. I have told the doctors exactly like above and they look at me and give me a uh hu. I would not think you could go through the change twice but I never had a problem the first time so maybe I am just going through the change at 68. LOL.
Dave, I did myself in when I cut a tree down in the greenbelt. We were thinning out the trees because they were growing into each other. Then I got home and OMG, the tree was protecting and shading three pots. I had to move three pots.
I have to shut it short. I have to get my label put together so I can plant a bunch of iris tomorrow. Later friends.
Hello! ^_^
I have a hard time following all this but I will try....
Mary ~ Are you an organic gardener? Use natural products? Thanks for the link on ASA. Also you can use white willow bark, as it is a natural source of salicylic acid. (ASA - acetylsalicylic acid)
Jeanette & Dave are right about the use of a systemic insecticide/pesticide. And technically it would be any product used systemically...as Dave explained.
I think that most of the mailboxes have been removed due to budget cuts. They used to be on every corner, and I rarely see any at all.
JB ~ Sorry to hear of mealybug. Have you tried using a Q-tip with alcohol? I think I may have used that in the past. I have only two houseplants right now, and one of them is outside. They are both quite healthy, despite my neglect. I water them when I think of it, but they are in places where I would notice if they started to droop. Still, I know I should take better care of them.
Jeanette ~ How are your tomatoes doing? Are they beginning to ripen? Here are some links for the uses of Neem oil: http://www.discoverneem.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neem_oil
There are more, you can use Google or your favorite search engine to investigate the possibilitites...
Well, good night all. I had a busy day today and tomorrow I go to town as it is my chiropractic day. She really does help, as I have had many operations and my body parts do not work as good as they used to.
You had a busy and full day Sharon. Bet you got a lot done? I honestly don't remember what I paid on the Cordylines Sharon. I think they normally get them in 2 sizes but they are probably more expensive than you pay. For the small ones in the gallon pot I probably paid 5 or $6. Don't remember. Why do you ask?
I think JB has way too many plants to use a Q tip on Evelyn. She has a greenhouse and grows to sell.
thanks for the link. I will look tomorrow.
How can the chiropractor make your phony body parts work better Evelyn? WD-40? LOL, really, I am curious since I have so many myself.
Well, I have an early dr. appt. myself in the morning, so nite.
You guys I have very cold winters here, but short. We get windy and the wind chill is horrid, cuts right through your clothes in the high desert. Not a long winter but cold especially in the night.
BTW, I have used several of Jerry's fix all cures but the tobacco is not one of them. I just looked at my pages to see what people have need for, and it sounded good.
I am so tired. You guys, you would not believe my weekend. Something really bad happened with my son Thurs. I am so tired and I just took Ambien so I won't stay on much tonight.
Sharon I have planted many things that nobody grows in this area and they usually do ok in certain spots, but one excessively cold winter night or a long heat wave can change all that in a flash. You see to have cornered the market on that though.
You and I are the night owls Janette. Night.
I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, but remember that most systemic insecticides get into ALL parts of the plants... including the nectar and pollen. Bad for butterflies and bees. If I have to use anything, I try to use a contact insecticide with short residual, so at least I can see what I'm killing. But, I know, some infestations are so bad that ya gotta just pull out the big guns!
hellnzn11- Sorry to hear about your son. I hope things work out somehow.
Jillann
Morning ..................NO RAIN again yesterday or last night. 93 today and humid.
I must reply to the patented plant question. If you see a PP on the tag or in a catalog, that means it is patented as you know. You are not supposed to propagate that plant or whatever you want to call it for sale. I am not sure who would police your home if you made one for yourself, but I have several patented plants and I honestly do not even try to reproduce them for fear I will forget and put them up for sale.
I wanted to show you the front of our house with all of the black eyed susans at their best.
We have them spotted all over the place. It is my daughters favorite flower.
I put up some starters on DG Marketplace yesterday. I must get back to work and get the business back up and running again. I am just getting lazy and feel crappy when I am not doing something productive. So, I am doing it. Now. LOL.
You all seem busy as bees and I am delighted you are all out there doing your thing with the plants. This summer has been very trying to all of us and when I saw the temps in Texas today I wanted to just cry for those people. I guess we will all adjust to the changes but when the come so unexpected and quickly as they did, it is a shock. So. I am going to stop b*I****** and move on.
Sharon, I am so sorry to hear you too have the sweats. Drink water and stay dry if possible. My daughter is your age and she also has them especially at night. It drives her crazy. All she does is shower. LOL
Evelyn....believe it of not I tried the Qtip thing and then I went to the Wipes and then I just gave up and started to spray. The time I put in trying to kill those little suckers was not productive, so I now spray and wash.
Best get moving if I want to get anything accomplished today. This is my day to work. I must remember to drink water and take my vitamins, minerals, etc. Yes, I ate my banana and blueberries too.
Talk later. Enjoy your day.
Dawn, I hope things work out with your son.
As far as your weather goes, I know what it means to go by the hardiness chart in buying plants and then have a super cold spell that kills some that were suppose to stand your zone.
That is why I try to stick to zone 4 plants when I am in zone 5.
I know what you are saying avianut, but I only use the stuff on a couple of plants that I work hard on. Don't see many of those little critters that you mention on them anyway. Other than those I don't use sprays or any of that on the rest of my yard.
JB, your yard looks so nice, and the Black Eyed Susans are pretty. Let me ask you about the tall evergreens. What do you do when they get taller than the eaves? I have some of the columnar Thuyas and they are that tall. I am thinking I m going to have to take them out. I have kept them pruned so they are getting fat too. Which they aren't suppose to.
Hi Jen, I ask my SIL the same thing? What then? Got no answer. LOL I think we can prune these back pretty hard because they are good plants for that. We will see. They are six years old now and almost up to the eves, so we will just have to wait and see. That is the North side of the house and they seem to love it there. Get late afternoon sun in the summer. Thanks for the nice comment on the BES.
Back to work. Later. JB
Howdy all
mary sorry i was feeling funny.... I know thats a normal state of mind for me. "all tresspassers will be shot survivors will be prosacuted"
All plants that have a trademark or plant patent i.e. PP123456789 , ppaf (plant patent applied for) or the little circle around an r are protected by a patent. Now with that said patent last 20 years and some sellers will not remove the info from their catalogs or listings. I think its a C O N SPIRACY. it fools the public into thinking the plant is better or keeps the hobby gardener from doing propagation. I stear clear of all of them as I don't even want to accidently take cuttings of something I am not suposed to. My grandfather was going to try encor's but I am not sure if he did or not and I did warn him of the potential legal issues. I will find out this coming december when we go visit for his 90th birthday.
Planting of the huge junipers next to the house is a common problem just like planting a deodor cedar in the median between 2 drives (60ft tall x 40 ft wide when mature. A possible solution is to work out a trade with a landscaper, where the come in remove the tree and replace it with a smaller plant so it has time to grow. someone usually will come dig them up and haul them off to the "dump" (someone's yard for $500.00)
Some juniper's can be trimmed up or shaped. In JB's case I would just cut the terminal growth point and keep it the size it is. they are so beautiful which ones are they?
well we got rain today. one area had about 3" I am not sure what we got though.
well its time to go lay down again as the day has not agreed with me. and I had such big plans. oh well another day. high of 85 today tomorrow 95
Dave
Thanks for the well wishing for my situation with my son.
I love those Black eyed Susan's JB. I know what you guys are talking about. I planted these(salt Bushes) Atriplex in my front yard, they now block the walkway up through my gate, they got way too wide, instead of tall, they are really pretty at first, and grow fast, but now they have issues with what I think are aphid problems, with black dots on the leaves, which makes them dry and curl up, then beige and fall off. I have two and they are not looking as great now to top it off. I hate to get rid of well established stuff since it is hard to grow things here.
What is Encore Dave.
I have to use Systemic Insecticides of some things here, like willows but I don't like to either, now that I have attracted so many winged creatures to the yard.
What does your willow have Dawn? Aphids? How big is the tree? If not too big, a strong hosing down with water should do it.
OK...has anyone gone to the neem links? http://discoverneem.com/neem-oil-insecticide.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neem_oil
Has anyone tried it on their insect problems? ( A different kind of systemic...)
Jeanette ~ What kinds of bugs have you defeated with Neem oil? I have not yet used mine, but I will be spraying the peppers soon.
JB ~ Have you used it?
Dave ~ ??
Jillann ~ ?
Dawn ~ Neem oil will not hurt any beneficials....have you tried it?
OK...I'm off the "soap box"...
Have a restful night everyone....
~ Evelyn ^_^

I use Neem, especially in the spring. I use it for gnats on cuttings. For aphids I use my fingers or water. I have a power washer and some times I use it to spray down the trees gently. It has a pressure setting. It is great for tall trees. I also use it for liquid fertilizer for the trees. I use nothing else. I feed the birds and they eat a lot of the tomato worms or whatever may be creeping around. The KOI pond has dragonflies and they eat bugs and so do the hummers so I really have not that many insects. I had a neighbor that came over last winter for some spinach and did not want any because some of the leaves had little holes in them. I said I am sorry but I do not use insecticides so all of my produce will have little holes but she still did not want any. I guess she would rather have insecticides with her produce.
OK, Dave, if I take a cutting from the park or hotel, who do I know if that plant is patented? I really do not plan on selling but I am getting interested in the Hardy Hibiscus because no one here knows about them. Can you buy starts from the person that has the patent? Or how do you get the starts?
Dawn, we had heat, humidity and wind today. What a day. It was cloudy so I expected cooler but when I stepped outside, boy was I surprised.
My son Todd, the Doctor that moved to Spokane just made Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.
OK, everyone, have a great morning tomorrow. By the time I get on here, you are already in bed. But if I open this in the morning, I get nothing done. Love you all my friends. Get better Dave, Evelyn, JB, and Merry. I believe Merry is having her eye surgery, right?
Jnette, the reason I asked the price was that they usually start here at $25 and go up. But they will live year round here. They use to be $5 and then a few of us gardeners discovered them and the price is right through the roof. The bi-colored one I showed with the photos of the coleus was $35.00. They cannot take direct sun here, it must be filtered. I saw five in someone's front landscape this afternoon and they were fried.
My landscaper got another home in here as a client. Just down the street. He and I are going to walk the property on Thursday at 1pm. They are willing to spend whatever they need to have their landscape look like mine. I asked him if he told them he had nothing to do with how my landscape looks? He just laughed. I do not know why God made this young man my problem to solve but it does give me something to think about now and then. And he is learning. First thing he learned was mulch and water. Not a lot of water but you must make sure the plant is getting water. DUH...
I got all my identification stakes ready for my irises so tomorrow I am going to try and plant them. If not completely done tomorrow then I will have to finish on Friday because I have a hair appointment on Thursday and the walk thru on two properties.
DH's new computer was installed today. The young man also did some quality control on his laptop so now it is working wonderful. Had a neighbor drop by this morning and remarked how much better he looks. He has his color back and is not that terrible gray color he was. He is eating but still not eating like he was so I guess maybe that will come back in time.
JB, your front landscape is so clean and proper. Mine is like an English Garden mess. Except in my mind. LOL...
When I take photos of the greenbelt, I will take photos of the front of the property. It has just been to muggy. 105 with 44% humidity acts like a sauna here so I take the dogs for their short walk around the tennis courts and back to the mail box and then home. But they were not ready to go any further either.
I picked a tomato today that weighed 11 oz. It was perfect and I made another summer sandwich. I took a photo. I will post later.
Evelyn, I have used it on spider mites and aphids. However I use the hose on aphids rather than mix up a concoction to use on them. Works good.
Sharon, congrats to Todd. Has he had to go to Afghanistan?
My willow died, but we have all the willows here, that come with Beetle Borers, so you need to treat asap. I have had success but you have to treat most soft wood trees here with a systemic 2x's a year and it is so expensive, but willows are really susceptible to borers fate.
Hot and humid though cool for August. Waiting for a Monsoon thunderstorm. Hope to get some in Sept.
Good morning peeps.
Busy day for me yesterday .... my daughter visited ... we went out for lunch and did a browsed some stores and purchased a total of 1 item. LOL
Spent most of my computer time yesterday purchasing bulbs from the lily co-op ... all those that I ordered are less than $1.00/bulb .... and I could not resist iris Kathry Hodkin @ $0.34/bulb.
JB ... I love the front of your abode.
Sharon ... I can't wait to see pictures of the greenbelt.
Evelyn ... Very nice picture
Dawn ... I hope your son's problem has been resolve.
Jeannette ... will let you know when your plants arrive and their condition .... will take a picture and post it if I can
Dave ... I will be going to the post office shortly to mail JM seeds.
I have so much to do today.
It looks like rain .... a few (VERY FEW) drops already.
LOVE YOU ALL
MARY
Morning Gang....almost afternoon. Busy canning pickles and watering. Not enough rain to make the ground wet. Oh my!
I use neems oil for mealy bugs on all my tropicals. When they get on the outdoor plants I just hose them down and pray. Those little buggers are not easy to kill. Who said the other day they hide and can live years in hiding and then come back as mean as ever.
Thanks to my SIL the front of the house looks good. That is the way he has the entire place and it makes me crazy. No place for any weeds. In my Iris bed you will find weeds.
He even weeds that when he has time. Love that guy!
Congrats to Todd, Sharon. I pray he stays state side. Hope everyone is o.k. I just do not have time at the moment to chat. Maybe later. HUgs. JB
Mary, tomorrow is your eye surgery. I forgot or I wouldn't have sent the ajuga. You cannot bend over for a bit after that surgery. Can't remember how long.
Those plants should be there today. So, just take care of them and they will be fine to wait until you can plant them. I had them in a bread loaf pan in a half inch of water.
That surgery is a snap. It takes them longer to get you ready, think they make a big deal of it so you think you are getting your money's worth, than the surgery. LOL, I am sure it is all necessary. When I was there they had a dozen of us all lined up that made me think of barber chairs. Take a number. LOL
Oh, and we all had to be there at 6:30 in the morning. Even when I had to drive 2 hours to get there. 10 or 15 minutes with the Dr. and that was it.
2 gabby old ladies fighting for time on here. We crossposted again JB.
JB, did you get in on the coop for the neem oil a month or 2 ago? I did and we got 100% neem for $27 a quart including shipping. However, I saw it somewhere on here a couple of days ago for $25. But then you would have shipping.
No I did not Jen, I had plenty and did not want to spend the money to just keep it on hand.
I do not need that large a quantity for what I use it on.
Put up about 8 starters yesterday and already had one dmail regarding them. Looks like people may have some money to spend this Fall. I hope so. LOL Must get on eBay and start listing. Just canned another gallon of pickles. That is all I swear.
Talk later. Hugs. JB
Howdy
been a busy day getting the niece ready for school and running errands. not much outside work though. its nap time so I will be back l8r....
succulents and cacti ...
www.dscolgrowers.com
I think is the website.
not much going on
Dave
JB, do you can the pickles in gallons? Sounds good. Think I will can some too. But in quarts.
I got a big fat zero with that website Dave.
I feel like taking a nap also.... but too much to do
Jeanette, approximately how many plants did you send?
Mail was already delivered but you package was not. I want to prepare for their arrival since they did not make it today.
I am going to take pictures of what I am planning to do untiI am able to plant them were I would like them .... so i will be back later.
and oh ..... no rain ..... guess no rain for JB either.
Dave ...... JM seeds enroute.
Be back later
chow
I didn't count them Mary. Probably 2 dozen???
DARN. I sent it priority. I hope they aren't mush. They should have been there today.
I'll bet Bob never thought to add a tracking. I will have to ask him. I never thought to tell him to.
This message was edited Aug 18, 2010 3:41 PM
I have to be at the place where the surgery is being done at 7 am toorrow. I amthe 1st one on the schedule. It is about a 20 minute drive. My daughter is transporting me.
Mail arrived late today .. after 3 pm. Usual time is around 2.
Jeanett ..... your plants will first rest in water in that white plastic tub on the back deck.
They should be here tomorrow .... temps not bad .... mid 70s ... overcast sky with as JB might say SOME SPIT. Definitely not nice of mother nature to get our hopes up.
The black flat in the picture contains potting soil .... it has 18 sections 2 in by 1 1/2 in and 4 in deep. The flat is presently in a wagon. I can sit on a step and place plant into potting soil of tray without bending my head.
Thank you mary. Nice flat for cuttings.
Have any of you used a clear bag over pots to root cuttings? It occured to me looking at Mary's flat. Its suposed to work quite well my only question would be air exchange.
Nap never happened. every 30 min someone wanted something.. phone Nieces ... oh well nice thought
Have a great evening
Dave, when I use a 3 or4 inch pot for cuttings I put them in a quart ziplock if the plant isn't too big. Then poke a pencil down into the soil and let it go up thru the top to hold it open a bit. When I need to I just open the zipper more. Can do the same with 6 inch in a gallon bag.
Mary let's hope they didn't sit in any hot weather somewhere else.
Well so far it has been a great day. I got about 30 irises planted and have about 80 to do tomorrow. The hard work is done. All the identifing tags are done and in alphabeticable order so that makes finding thrm easier. The irises are soaking and I will takes thm out in a few hours.
The landscape laborer helped me pop about 10 pups off of three mature Sago palms. They belong to a neighbor and they always call when they show their little heads. They are now in the garage to dry out for a few weeks and then I will pant therm in the holding garden.
The holding garden is holding to many things. I am going to transplant some Hardy Hibiscus and ship some.
DS, the new LTC, has been called up three times. Once to Walter Reed. Once to Kosovo and once to a base hospital in North Carolina. They have been sending the Doctors overseas, they send the Doctors in the service over there and the reserves take their place at the place they work. He has been in long enough that he can resign but so far he has not.
Attached is a photo of tomato I picked and enjoyed on my summer sandwich. It weighted 11oz.
FYI ...... I have to be at the facility for the eye surgery at 7 am tomorrow ... I am the first one on the schedule ..... It is about a 20 minute drive. My daughter will transport me.
Sharon .... the tomato is nice but I was hoping for pictures of the greenbelt.
Dave It was a good thing I took that envelop to the post office .... I had a feeling one FOREVER was not enough ..... even 2 would have been insufficient.
Since I was at the post office, I was very close to my favorite garden center.
I bought the 3 azaleas in the picture.
Oh Sharon that is a real gem! So so pretty
Landscaper showed up today so we looked at the home that wants their landscape to look like mine. OMG, anyone got dynamite. They just purchased the home. Everything is done cheaply, soil is terrible, flowers, trees, shrubs and irrigation are all a joke. They are gone for three weeks on a cruise and want to talk with me when they get back., I think I can sell her some of my plants. The back yard has two different distinct areas. The house in that area is shaped like a upside down L. The total area is surrounded by very large windows that overlook the total garden and pool area. If I lived there I would not be able to look out the windows. They have only lived there 2 months. She has fallen in love with my English Garden mess. I do not think she has any idea how much it is going to cost just to get all the mess out of there, bring in decent soil, redo the irrigation, remove a bunch of half dead trees and then try to determine where to start.
I am going back down there to morrow, I will take photos. I like to have before and after photos.
Merry god bless you on the eye surgery., Jnette, enjoy your wonderfully cool weather. Dave you are getting really hot temperatures. Evelyn, why so quiet? Dawn, where are you?
We were suppose to get rain today but it went East and North.
You all be safe and happy tomorrow. Later......
Mary, Merry? I will send up a prayer for you.
I had a meeting tonight and then went to my friend's house and got Thai Food and watched tv with the hubby for a little while so this is my first chance to get on. I need to go shower too. Ho hum, such is the life.
I swear if any of you has a Berry Star Frozen yogurt place by you, get the yogurt container with a lid, it is clear plastic bubble, the cup is wax coated paper and it is the best seed plant starter.
