New bees chit chat - come on in!! 07/17/2010

Wow Nettie! Great going! Best of show is awesome! Would love to see some pictures when you get time! Congrats!! Sounds like our state fair a couple of years ago with all your heat. We had that problem, and the poor kids here lost so many birds and rabbits due to heat strokes, etc. Feel for the kids having to go thru that with their animals. Do the kids there use PVC pipe filled with water and then frozen and then put in the pens with their animals there? We've been seeing that alot here. Works really well to helping the smaller critters cool when they are cooped up in those buildings.

Have fun Kelly.
Nettie, I'm proud of you girl wit a Best of Show WIN! Congratulations! You can freeze water in a soft drink bottle too and put in the pens for the animals. Helps a lot in this heat. Take several frozen bottles and switch them out as needed. Keep the unused ones in a insulated container to keep it cold. Animals will appreciate it. And YOU ALL take care not to get too hot out in this heat too. Drink lots of fluids. Have fun and tell us all about it when you get back. Take pictures if you can. We like pictures! LOL
I feel better today Nettie. Think my bloodpressure was up yesterday. I'm good.
HUGS!

You could fill a gallon jug about 3/4 and take it to cool the critters..Thy would have cold water to drink too.

One of the treasures we found in Gramps estate was this 1942 Edition of Maule's Seed Catalog. Interesting piece we have here. It's was published in almost comic book format with pulp inside pages and a beautiful glossy color cover. It's a real look at gardening seen 68 years ago! Some of the varieties are pretty close to what we have today. I've spent hours absorbed in this thing, it even has the original order form and return envelope attached.

This is only one inside page. I tried to scan the beautiful cover but it wouldn't bump over to my computer.

Cool Al, what a great find!

WOW! HOW wonderful Al. I love to see old stuff like that found. Someone had just shown me a old menue where her father and someone had opened a cafeteria and the menue was adorable and so CHEAP! It was many many years ago in another state. BUT so cool!

Love the catalog Al - how neat!

It's nice here - in the upper 70s maybe and rained last night. Humid but nice;o)

Going to ride ATVs with my son right now!

Gosh Mitt, that was amazing!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Cool site Mit - thanks!

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

It's really neat reading about the history of some of these seed varieties. Thanks for finding the web site on Wm Maule. Maule's apparently went out of business in the early 1950's. I'm glad that the Victory Seed Co. in Oregon, among several others, has managed to save some of the older seed types.

This catalog is so cool I was thinking about sending it out on a round robin tour if anybody is interested in seeing it. It doesn't have any particular value, but I would like to see it returned someday.

Have a good night Nettie! Tell Parker congrats for us! That is awesome! And it's wonderful that some of you are getting a break from the heat and getting some much needed rain!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Al, nice treasure you have in that catalog.
Still want to check out the link.
Nettie, I do I can call Abigail and she comes running. I usually have a bug and she wants it.
Abigail is a sweet girl,
Good Morning ALL.

Hi nettie, glad you all are doing so well at the fair. I just love to hear about the kids doing those things. It is so nice. The frozen water jugs will make a difference to the animals. This heat is just too much on caged animals enclosed that way. Poor babies. I wish I could get him some of my colored egg laying chicks. Mine are the ones that lay colored eggs and so friendly when raised from a baby. Silkies make the best PET chickens. I've raised all kinds.
We got rain last night and so nice. Got to go see about the baby. She is waking up. Later.

i think one of my garden club ladies is givening parker some of those chicks. he will bug her until they hatch he can hardly wait to get them. i yhink she is giveing him some plants also. he is a mess wonder if he will name his plants he has love for every thing no mater what it is,some one droped a little mut dog on us i called him and said parker grand ma has had another little dog droped on me and i can.t keep him you can have him if mom says it is ok, it was ok . he named him turtle he loves parker real good and parker loves him they go every where togearher, bed bath tub im not sure i could handle the bath tub thing but it dosen,t bother his moma and she is the person who cleans the mess up not me. im going to bed you all have a good day hope we all get rain love nettie

Good morning All Im glad to say we did a lil rain almost an inch.. Guess that will keep the grass from dying and make the weeds grow even if theres no hope left for the plants. Some of my hosta's are looking real bad from the dry heat(the ones I didnt keep watered) They flowered are proceeded to start turning brown..They may get a lil more morning sun than they actually like, but have done well there for 3 year without this problem, or at lease this early in the year..My wild geraniums look like sticks now. This was my first year to see them big and blooming so not sure how long they last each year. Its to the point here now that only the strong survive..Hope you all have a great weekend.. Nettie my son is growing fryer hens for the county fair competition then hopes to sell whats left..lol Ive never eaten a chicken from the back yard.. He says we can always have a big BBQ if they dont sell.

HUNEY, the key to eating a chicken that roams around is put it up in a pen for 2 weeks feeding it grain or laying crumbles then kill it to eat. You don't want to eat one roaming and eating just anything , so keeping it in a pen for at least 2 weeks will ensure a cleaner diet and better tasteing for you. Hope they sell for him. Maybe you'll get some rain this weekend, it has helped us. We got a little last night late.

Booneville, AR

huney not to wory they will sell, people haxe ben looking at parkers 12 hens trying to make up their mind what they will bid for them, yhat starts at `1 today he is hopeing they get a good home, the money goes back to 4h to get more chicks for more kids. i think they call it the pullet chain. love nettie sory your things are burning up you are not alone my plants are gone not the naked ladies got about 50 in bloom they are a wellcome sight. you should have some around somewhere you can,t kill them.

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Temps are still pushing the 90's here in New York, hottest summer I can remember in a long while. Predicted hot for the next week or so. Livy and I tried out our new pool this afternoon to stay cool! Thought you might enjoy this lovely pix, part of my backyard garden in the background.

mekos parker got 17 dollars a pice for his chickens but he cried and his grand mother alice from tenn. bought them back thats the reason i didn,t go to the auction i can,t stand the tears. i would have bought them myself. he took them home and caught grasshoppers for them.i guess he is still in the chicken buisness love and hugs to all.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

You look very cool Al, but I think Livy steals the show!

I think Parker loves his chickens nettie!

OH Nettie, that is just cute. He is attached already to them. Well, he took good care or they wouldn't have sold so high so he will take good care now and finish raising them. Good for his mom. I'm proud of her doing that for him. It would have broke my heart to have to see that and not get them back. I'm proud of the boy caring like he does. He'll be a good one growing up.
Sounds like you had a real good day.
Way to go AL. I need one of them too. Iffin I had a grandbaby big enough to justify buying one, so everyone wouldn't know it was for me, I'd be in there too. :0) 2thumbs up!!!

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

I hope everybody's staying hydrated with this weather. I hope the rain dance works, Nettie!! We need some, too.

I saved a few of my "Tumbling Tom" miniature tomato seeds to try over the summer. My aim is to plant them now in hopes for an indoor crop around Christmas time. If anybody is interested I will likely have a few transplants available to ship around (?) October 1st. Keep in mind that this is kind of an experiment and I don't know the exact results until I try it. They seem to grow well in larger containers. Let me know if you would like to join this adventure and try a couple.

I can also do some stem clips from my green Coleus, which is still healthy but getting a litttle rangly right now.

Theyre beautiful Al. How do you keep tomatoes over winter in NY? I figure you are colder than me. You keep them inside a greenhouse or the house?(iffin you don't mind me asking)
I'm thinking I probably won't do my greenhouse this winter, but ya never know, I just might surprise myself.

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

I don't have a greenhouse, but I do have a nice sunny window on the south side of my kitchen. I've grown several things there even in the short day winter months. I also have a 4' light stand for the smaller plants up to 20" tall.

I got gourds. Snake gourds and I got to water to keep them growing but finally they are growing.

Thumbnail by ridesredmule

So cute Charleen. I think I'll plant mine this winter and get a jump start on the growing season.
That is good to know Al, I wasn't sure they would produce well inside. No bees to pollinate and real sunshine. Just wondering.
I'm glad too nettie. That is just TOO hot to be outside for so long. You get rest and enjoy the going out for dinner. Happy anniversary and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! BIG HUGS!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Mekos, AL can get a paintbrush and buzz around, the tomato won't know any difference.
Yes, Nettie. Happy Birthday and happy Anniversary.

Hey nettie, I think I read somewhere a while back that you can draw. (I may have mistaken you for someone else) pen and ink drawing. Do you draw people or just objects? Do you have any you could show us if this is the right person I'm thinking about. My brain does not work so I could be mistaken. Anyway If it is you, I'd love to see some. Have some peach muffins with peach chunks inside for your birthday!
