New bees chit chat - come on in!! 04/30/2010

Yippie too, Arejay. Hope all is good with the baby. Any names yet?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

LOL! Shouldn't freeze, RRM, cuz we are at about 40, but man, what a wind! Blowing hard again, constant 30-40 miles per hour, with stronger gusts! YUCK! Good thing we have strong clay dirt too, being hard clay probably keeps the plants from blowing away! Too cheap to buy sod, and there was kinda grass here when we bought the place, so just keep adding more seed and hoping someday I'll have lawn where I want it! Gotta add lots of manure too, of course, and the really bad areas I'm just putting in flower beds and such! lol North Pole, funny, RRM!! LOL But my iris will be blooming long after yours are all done! I just pretend not to let the cold and short growing season bother me, and just keep zone pushing. Think I'll add a magnolia tree this year maybe.

You go for it! I'm with you girl.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Look! Spring time has to be here! We have baby Canadian Honkers! 6 of them! This is at my DM's house, about 30 miles from me. She gets a pair of honkers every year that nest in her back yard on the edge of the pond! Not the best picture, cuz I hate to have them chase me! They can be very mean!

Ok, all you plant experts, does anyone know what kind of plant this is? I'm guessing it's related to a wandering jew of some kind, but really fuzzy! We call it monkey butt, but I know that's not it! LOL

Here's a close up of the leaves, shows how fuzzy!

EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKSSSSSSS!!!!!!! I love em. How sweet is that?!? A whole family.

CONFIRMATION, I got the vine! WOO_HOO!!!! I got both now. The stictocardia and the schisandra rubriflora. Both are on the way. Yippie! We'll all have vines by fall.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Hold your breathe and cross your eyes. she got her babies on the way. Yea!!!! Mekos

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Yea!! Yippee!! So happy for you Mekos! Can't wait to see pictures!

I think it's this one skellogg. http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Commelinaceae/Tradescantia_sillamontana.html

I have some and it gets real pretty with pink flowers.

Congrats Mekos!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Cool, Seray! I've never seen my flower, but hope it does! Mine isn't very old tho, just started it last spring, with a piece about 3" long, and it's growing good, despite my lack of care. It's the only house plant I have, so you would think I could handle one, but the poor thing gets very neglected. They sure start easy tho, and grow really fast! Does yours have lots of pink and purple on it, like the normal wandering jew?

Thanks you guys. It is because of you all sending me links and I'll find a way to repay you all. I'll send cuttings so you can have some too. Seray, my little red sundew has doubled in size. It has really taken off. Thank you so much.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

So happy for you Mekos! But don't save a cutting for me, doubt it would do good here in the Arctic country! lol But I will want to see pictures!

You will see. I'll find you something different to send you. Have you got a wish list somewhere?

Well, HOT DOG! I got the catmint you want. Ye-Ha!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

LOL!! Now that's funny! There is no possible way for me to do a wish list! I want and like everything! I'd have to do a 320 page book! And my DH would really wonder about me then!
FYI, don't know if all of you have Hardware Hank stores, but one of our local area HH puts up a greenhouse every year, and now have Bat Flowers in 4" pots for $5.00. Don't know if that's a good price or not, but thought I would mention it, as it might be worth checking out in your areas.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I planted the other Pitcher Plant in the little "bog pot" with the one I got from RRM. I think the little red sundew croaked as I didn't see it in the pot last night. I put some of that moss in there so maybe it's just hiding - lol. The little green guys looks like one maybe is growing. I put the shade up on the garden yesterday so I hope they survive the summer. I will have to remember to fill the pan up under it every night to keep the humidity up. Hard when you live in the bone dry desert.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

I wouldn't know how to keep anything alive there, Kelly! But I really have fun when I'm there, picking everyone's brains about what plants are what!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

It's funny cuz you all visit and want to grow the plants we have here... and I want to grow all the plants you peeps have that I can't possibly grow here in a million years - lol...

But that is the fun of it.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

It sure is! When you're ready to come visit mekos make sure it's in the winter time. I have a feeling you'd melt in the summer heat!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

I was the same way when I was in SC 2 years ago, and NC last year. We can always pick out the gardening nuts, cuz we are all the same! Always bugging everyone about all the plant life, no matter where we are, lol! We are all sick! That gardening bug is a dangerous thing to catch!

Yup, I agree 100%. You are ALL sick. LOL Rotfl!!!!! Just agreeing with Skellogg.

Mindy's eggs went out this morning so be looking for egg soup soon. They didn't guarantee the package to get there in one piece because they are eggs. $20.00 and no guarantee, now I'm sick. It better be full of peanuts when it arrives too Mindy.
Loca your little collector ornament and surprise will go out tomorrow.
RRM your rose bush will go out this weekend. That is how far I've got on my list so far, so PLEASE be patient with slow me and d-mail if I forget anyone.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Mekos I'll be sure and take a picture of the eggs and how they are packed when they get here just to ease your mind.

Just pray they don't get shook too much so they will hatch.

Hi Skellogg

That white velvet stays green and just get fuzzier in the sun. Mine doesn't have the coloring of the normal wondering jew. $5 for a bat flower is a good price.

Very good price. We don't have that store around here. If we did I'd be cleaning them out.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

The tag on them say they are cuphea ilavea, but I don't think they are the same ones you guys were putting in your goth beds are they? I had them give me a tag from them, it says "Kids will love the funny, dark purple faces and electric orange-red ears of the cuphea! Grow a mass of this plant near a window where you can enjoy watching the hummingbirds feast on the almost endless supply of nectar that it produces. This fast grower is very heat tolerant with free flowering blooms that flit above wiry, sticky, hairy foliage. Plant this summer loong bloomer in mixed containers, hanging baskets, or wherever you desire hot, bright splashes of color. Overwinter as a houseplant in a sunny window and it may continue to bloom all winter. Pinch back the stem tips to maintain a dense, compact shape. plant in full sun to llight shade in moist well drained soil. Feed with a slow release or liquid fertilizer as directed. Height 12" -14", width 12"-14". Anybody want me to pick one up for you? Are they the same ones you all wanted in your goth gardens?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Ok, looked them up online, and every thing I can find on them calls them bat face flower, but also says they grow to 36".
So who knows what they are! lol But I can see this week how many they have left, and still pick one up for anyone. I might even have to get me one, and just put it in a pot so it's easier to winter. Oh no! 2 house plants, lol, might have to think on that one, lol!

OH Skellogg, I've seen them in catalogs and that is a great price and they are a beautiful plant, you will love them. Go for it. They are a deep purple and the flower looks like a bats face. It's not the Tacca plant but you will like it better. Easier to care for and grows faster.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Gonna have to try one. Have the perfect pot for it, right off the patio, so I can watch the hummers! And for $5 if it doesn't make it thru the winter (no doubt due to my neglect, lol) I'm not out that much! Mekos, you want one too?

Booneville, AR

I would love one but really no place to keep it. My yard is full of pots that need to be put in ground and my screen room is covered in pots that have to be kept in and back deck has a patio table full of some that needs to go in ground and still got bunches in the greenhouse that got to find room for somewhere. BUT it would be nice in the headboard of my pond! HOT DOG! No better not or I'll get the sickness everyone around here got. I'm cutting back. I'll plant something I already got in that headboard. Slapping my hand and mouth. Biting my tongue too. Fixing to break the fingers too. SO Better not but thanks bunches. You get one and show us the pictures. That will work. Love you and good night.
Good night Nettie and don't you get sick on candy. Cheetos are good. I munch out on those too. When I get my pond figured out, I'll show you guys. BIG HUGS all.
