Shes about too... #49

I found a grease pencil today also, they are not suppose to fade.
The ptouch looks like the best option to me. They look nice.
My engraving is nothing to brag about...LOL

Told myself I am not spending money on plants until I get the ones I have planted....yeah righ.....I bought 2 more butterfly bushes, a columbine, two annuals that are bright red, and another hosta. I got everything planted except for the two annuals and the hosta, I am dividing it up I hope....

Winds were horrible here all day and still horrible this late at night.....I had all these starts of cone flowers that were looking beautiful for the plant sale.....welll good thing the sale isn't for a couple of weeks, not looking so good now!

None of the elements affect them at all, LK. My P-touch is Model 1180. It fits nicely in the palm of my hand, has a keyboard and a preview display window to see what I've typed before I print & cut the label. Mine came from Sam's Club at least 7 years ago and I paid $20 for it, only bought it at the time because I needed to print file folder labels and never had a clue it would be such a lifesaver in the gardens. It runs on 3 AAA batteries that I've only had to replace once. The tape cartridges are 26' long and they're about $10 each but that's a lot of labels when you consider each one is only 5-7" long. Why don't you check eBay or Amazon and see what you can come up with? There are other thermal-printer manufacturers out there but I've only used P-Touch.

Gosh, happ, your winds sound down right wicked. Don't get blown away! I'm probably going to be in trouble tomorrow when I visit my favorite nursery around here. He has the best stuff nobody else has.

I planted 12 perennials today, also Cosmos and Zinnias I sowed from seed that were nearly root bound in their pots, and re-potted more houseplants and tropicals. Also sorted the Canna rhizomes by height. If the good Lord's willing and the crick don't rise, those puppies will be in the ground Saturday. Planting Cannas around here is a sure sign Spring has sprung.

I hadn't thought about using one of those printers. We used to use one at the store I worked at and it never faded or washed off. We had to wash all shelves once a week and that encluded washing off the track were the price was posted. I am going to go looking for one of those for my labeling. I've never labeled plants before, but with all these beautiful daylilies I've received and other plants, I want to know who is who.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I would of thought the tape would fall off, so glad to hear that won't happen. I think actually DH has one of those will have to check.
marti - like you I want to remember who gave me what, as a matter of fact I was weeding around a plant FOTV sent me last year.....love playing in the garden.

I have a couple of favortie nurseries way too close to me...LOL, course I seem to always find something I love. Planted flowers for my Mom yesterday....she cracks me up, she will buy a 4 pack and we will put 2 here and then 2 more at the other end of the bed.... :D She watches her pennies, but kind of like me she likes her flowers. I told her last night don't buy any more flowers cause Moms Day is coming......

The winds howled all night long! I watered tons of stuff because it dried the pots out so bad. It was suppose to rain last night but at 10pm the stars were shining so as usual I am out under the stars taking care of these beauties.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Matter of fact when prices changed and we had to remove the stickers, we had to use a razor blade to get under the edge to peal it off. So would seem to me that if you make the label, leave it a little long and stick it on whatever you are using, (I'm using venicen blinds) so that it goes over the top a little and than fold it down the back of the tag. That way nothing can get under it.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

They're tougher than I thought too! There's a leading edge before the name prints, don't remember if I've always tucked it over the top of the blind, but all the new ones I've made this year are like that. The plant name I think is easier to read and adds a little insurance with the label being stuck on both sides. Any kind of blinds work and they're easy to find at Goodwill and yard sales. marti, til you make your labels, what if you took a picture of that area of your garden, printed it, and wrote the names of your plants on each one on your printout? Before I realized the P-touch would work and my Sharpie labels had started to fade, I just made a simple sketch on a plain piece of paper. Still have those. Am I paranoid or what...lol Plants are like people with names, I'd hate to forget the name of an old friend.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I have made a graft of my yard and have marked where everything is going. Than I made one of each planter area and listed the plants by name in each area. I'm paranoid too!!!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

You should see the mess I made sketching my circular Hosta garden. They were babies at the time and I kept going round & round the Cherry tree thinking I'd missed one. And speaking of that garden, the labels I made using a Sharpie were buried under mulch and are still readable.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

fotv, I use to have a map of my garden, each plant had a number that referred to another sheet, it had the name of the plant, where I bought it, when, and how much, then I took a photo of the plant and bought cheap photo albums at the dollar store and put those in there. I was so happy, then I started buying more plants, founds DG and got plants in trade, and things just got out of hand...LOL, now I am some what lost, dog ate the wooden shims I used, markers faded on the blinds, the blinds got brittle and broke, you name it, it has happened! So I again am trying to get a handle on it. I still have a problem with the blinds getting brittle, but if I just cut strips of aluminum and use the label make I could be set.....yeah!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

One thing that has worked for me with the sharpie is I write on painters tape with sharpie and put it on the plant tag and it does last longer. I figured that out with black plastic pots, I put painters tape on them and wrote what is was I was starting 2 years later, after being in sun light they are fine, so I started doing that with labels.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Sounds like a plan!

Oh, edited to say I Winter Sowed a few jugs and used Red duct tape and a fat Sharpie to label them. Still readable after, well, too many inches of snow and ice.

Has anyone tried the Advanced Search? It's awesome.

Gotta get going. See y'all later.

It did work great until I got to far behind in planting and I just started throwing plants in the ground one fall. I have never recovered....LOL

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

You all are far too organized for me. Who am I?? Where am I??? :0)

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Me too, happ. I keep a spreadsheet (far behind now), with the plant name, date of purchase, how much I paid, where it came from...trade / swap / purchase, bloom photographed check box and a block to check off if I'd added the photo to the Plant Files. I do the double labels too if one came in the pot. Are we nuts or what?

Neener, at least you have your sanity.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Sanity??? Boy you are so wrong. I've had one mint julep in honor of Derby Day tomorrow and I am so not sane. :0)))

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh how funny! I'm bouncing back and forth between forums and just asked that very question on RMB.

For anyone interested, there is a red white and blue swap going on!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Did any of you turn into "gardening softies" over the Winter? Boy I sure did but my shorts still fit and are actually a bit lose (yahoo!). How did that happen after not doing anything much except eat, sleep, read and watch TV for months -- and of course be on DG?

Yesterday when it was 85 degrees and a tad humid, I planted about 75 Canna rhizomes sorted by height, most of them were again gifted by a neighbor and several I've never tried came from trades. If hubby didn't love these things so much I'll say to heck with them and that area would be filled with Perennials. Oh well, that garden is just outside the garage and as all of you know so well, that's his domain...LOL Also figured out where to put some Winter Sowed stuff and got a few of the jugs cleared out and planted. Some of those included various Cosmos you'd sent me in the Seed Robin, Susie.

Where does all our potting soil go? Had to run get more today and couldn't resist buying 2 each Ipomoea batatas "Sweet Caroline Red" and "Marguerite", Lobularia "Snow Princess" and Dichondra "Silver Falls" to start the hanging baskets. Worked on them til I ran out of plants and decided to mix in some annual seeds so they'll just have to wait and fill in later. Two small container gardens were next, each planted with a Salmon Geranium, Picotee Begonia (forgot I had these bulbs), plugs of Creeping Jenny, and then stuck a round topiary form in the pot where I plan to add an English Ivy "crown". Forgot to pick up a small bag of Sphagnum moss at the nursery for the Ivy or those containers would be finished. Daylily seedlings are doing well started in February and 9 out of the 12 pots of JMG seeds planted last month have germinated. They're are going to be planted around our ugly telephone poles with EE's and the short 4' variety around our mailbox. Thank God it's going to rain tonight and tomorrow so I can pack boxes of plants I also dug this week-end for trades and swaps.

Was that an exciting Kentucky Derby finish or what?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

That was awsome! You sound like my type of Gardener..

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

FOTV, you must not be too "soft" cause you sure got a lot done today, wowzer! It is a good day when you don't gain weight over the winter! LOL Cannas and dahlias are the only thing that I plant I have to dig. I did make the mistake of putting cannas in one of the big pots with ee's (or maybe wasn't a mistake cause those are the only ones I didn't freeze to death) and now I have to dig them out of the pot cause it is way too crowded. I love the look of Dichondra "Silver Falls" in the magazines. I have never grown it. I must of turned into a softie over the winter, cause I sure felt the pain after working outside....LOL I lost weight but only because I have been trying, it sure is hard for me to get it off.

I didn't get to work in the garden today, DH had a swap meet he wanted to go to, so up at 4am....is that crazy, drive for an hour and hallf, but got to the swap meet early...LOL I found some more garden stuff...LOL I bought four stacking baskets, that are full of slits, that look to me like they will be perfect for over wintering dahlias and cannas and the such. They could also make good water garden pots they are pretty big tho. Then I found a "torch" that you hook onto a small propane tank to burn weeds in the driveway. DH is going to mount everything on a dolly and it can be wheeled around, so that will work out great. Bought a new pair of pliers with bright orange handles to pull weeds with, figure I should be able to find these when I lay them down. I can entertain myself just about anywhere...LOL We walked from 6am to 12:30! My tootsies were tired. I came back and took a nap which is something I rarely do. I did drag out one of the brug pots, gonna start whipping them into shape. But really didn't get anything done. Look out tomorrow!

Debra, what have you been up to? Did you get everything out of the basement? That is alot of walking.....cause you had a lot of flowers....winds at my house have been and are tonight awful. Gonna have to find a place to protect them. I don't have any wind breaks at all....

Hey Deejay, how is that new greenhouse doing? Sounds like you have lots of plants coming in to keep you busy!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

You girls are so ambitious!! I didn't manage much yesterday even though I am on my own this weekend. DH is off on a golf trip. I find my gardening motivation is limited this year. I did get the plants all out and the garage started to be put back together. Need to go plant the brugs today. I'm putting them all in the ground this summer to dave on the watering. We'll see if that works or not. Should mow, should mulch, ack I don't feel like doing anything.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

rvnsbrk, sometimes your body just needs to chill out....I have finally stopped feeling guilty for not doing anything!....LOL Course I still think about what I should be doing.... :D

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

I did get this little doodad finished on Friday.

Alrighty joeswife, happ, and tubbytee -- Your Ferns are freshly dug and washed. There's around 15 larger crowns and a few smaller ones. I forgot to put a tape measure with them but our deck boards are 5-1/4" wide if that helps. Do y'all want me to just split these so you each receive about the same amount? And if none of you mind if I clip the fronds, I'll be able to stuff more in your boxes. The fronds will come back good as new anyway in a few weeks. None of you owe me anything in return.

When I went down the road yesterday to dig them, my neighbor two doors down had just had a 2 alarm fire. Between the firetrucks and watertrucks and volunteer vehicles, the road was completely blocked. Guess you can tell we live in the country and don't have a hydrant on every corner. Anyway I came back home and hubby & I walked down to my neighbor's to see what was going on. My heart was pounding thinking one of our neighbors' houses was on fire! Turns out the underbrush in my neighbor's wooded field was on fire, but it could have been so much worse since there are four homes fairly close to each other. My neighbor has been trying to clear that field for his daughter's new house and with the high winds we had yesterday, what started as a small brush fire got out of hand so quickly.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

omg that must of been scary about the fire....I know about volunteer fire departments and the time it takes....oh my.

DH set the fields around our house on fire one time when I was out of town. The fields were full of corn staks all dry, and the wind all of sudden came up and the fire leaped to the corn field......glad I wasn't home I would of had a heart attack...he didn't tell me cause I was always on him about being careful.... I found out that Christmas when our friends bought him a gag gift..... rofl....

fotv send the best way for you on the ferns, I am easy to get along with.....it is really kind of you to do this.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Susie, I have not heard anything for a few days, but last I heard he is still in the hospital.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Open fires are banned here October through April. It was hot yesterday and again today, pushing the high 80's, but so windy. Another twist on the fire is the guy who owns the nursery where I'd just bought plants and potting soil is also a Volunteer Fireman. He was so funny after they'd put the fire out, asking me how my plants were doing and if I'd figured out where to put them..lol. Talk about dedication to both his business and our Volunteer Fire Department, not to mention he was soaking wet from sweat having to wear such heavy gear in the heat but still maintained his sense of humor. He's also the same guy who taught our Pruning Class in March.

I'm dying to know what did your hubby got that Christmas. Was it popcorn?

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

taters, are you talking about tubby?

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

YEPPIE

I got out today.....................

Tubby

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh good, tubby. Are you doing OK?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Goodness, Tubby.. Please take it easy!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Yep, I was talking about Tubby, and shortly after I posted, he said he is home!
Tubby, so glad to hear your doing better!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

joeswife, happ, and tubby -- I Priority Mailed your ferns today and expect you'll receive them Friday. If you don't have time to plant them right away, just dunk them in a tub of water til you're ready. When I weighed the boxes, each one was just over 4 pounds & I couldn't believe how close the weights were with only a few ounces difference among each of your boxes. I hope they grow well for you & would love to see photos of them later on.

I planted several Purple Hyacinth Bean seeds beside each pillar of our front porch today, also Morning Glory seedlings around the telephone poles with EE's (Thank You, happ!) and Cannas. The shorter variety MG seeds still haven't germinated after 4 weeks so I'm thinking they're duds. What would be another good blooming vine I could use around our mailbox? I thought about Black-Eyed Susan Vine but am open to any of your ideas and suggestions.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

How about some sweet peas?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

clematis? sweet autumn or any of the other prenniels? If you want some vines let me know!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

How about the cypress vine, I think it is called. The hummers love them and that vine loves hot!

I probably have a start of the sweet autumn clematis. Mine never sent volunteers for the last 5 years.....well puberty must of hit cause I think the vines I am seeing are little ones..... If you want to plant that don't buy one, let me dig and see.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have tons of it too..

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Hi Debra, your autumn had babies also? I had alot of things this year that spread by seeds that I have never had come up. Must of been the wet summer last and the wet winter....some I am very glad to see but others maybe not so much...LOL

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

One of our local nurseries had a Red Honeysuckle vine and I'm still kicking my butt for not buying it. Do any of you happen to have that one? I'd love to have a start of Sweet Autumn Clematis but don't fight over who's going to send it...LOL

Today I planted a pot of Centaurea "Mountain Bluet", Common Toad Lilies, and a few more of my Winter Sown jugs. Then I tackled a virgin bed and cleared a 2' perimeter of grass around another telephone pole and planted more MG seedlings & Lilies around it. That doesn't sound like much but it was 85 degrees and I'm wiped out.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

It hit 98 here today! Still 92 at 8:39 pm!
Sounds like your going to have a bunch of climbers this year!
