New bees chit chat Come on in!! 2/25/10

Enid, OK

Some of the others may go on this stupid, ugly frog. I will buy most anything froggie - had this several years thinking it was just some sort of useless, ugly pot holder. I should have known better, but it is me. Anyway, I stuffed it and still don't really like it. I have had the $40.00 object for so many years now, it stays! I haven't liked it since I brought it home; worst part is, I didn't even know what it was.

Enough babble for now.

Pearland, TX

Trash cans wasn't my idea either. but the principal was the same. Stick dirt in as the plants grow. Dump
'em out onto plastic sheeting and sort dirt from taters. I'm thinking its going to be a blast for kiddo. He already loves pulling carrots. We pulled 4 big fat ones out this afternoon. Now I just have to figure out what to make with them for supper.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Ok the trash bags wasnt my idea either!! Mine went in a pot and under another pot then into a bigger pot till it busted then in the ground with the pot. I agree with who ever it was that talked over the trash bag idea but....
It wasnt my idea. I will take credit for it if you all insist !

Years ago I remember a mechanic friend that could turn an old auto car tire inside out to make kind of a neat urn planter. I never could quite figure out he did it, but it made a nice planter. They could even be stacked several high if you had the right size. Anybody else seen these, or know how to do it? What a great way to recycle an old tire!

I know about Trash cans but not trash bags. But I don't know why you can't. don't you have to poke holes in them???
i saw a half of a mannikin today and I do believe it would have made a good planter.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I use old tires for planters. I stack two ontop of each other and fill with potting soil. I plant tomatoes and zucchini in them. Keeps the zucchini off the ground and the tomatoes also. This year I am also growing herbs in them. Makes great raised beds.

Dellroy, OH(Zone 6b)

I do use the tires for potatoes. I just plant the seed potatoes in the center of the tire and when they start growing I add another tire and more soil. I keep doing that until the tires are four high. Let the plants go to flower and dry up and then pull the tires off and harvest the potatoes.

Half a mannequin?? WOW - I want one! That would be half a mrs edwards. She may never get done, that's why her name doesn't have capital letters, she is fading away. (sob, sob) I can't figure out how to make a mooning mrs edwards. Everything I have tried has been horrible.

Tire flowers - try this link http://www.wuvie.net/tireplanter.htm
let me know if it doesn't work for you

Where did I come up with contractor garbage bags being a good idea if it wasn't from you? I'll blame it on Mekos then - she's not here to defend herself at the moment.

Off to bed, baby wore me out today! I wanted to be outside so bad - could only go out for a bit while he napped.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

It's raining here - again - lol. Got compost dug into all the veggie beds, got more maters and peppers planted and sowed seeds for all my summer squash. Didn't get to the herbs or beans so hoping for gentle rain to plant them tomorrow. Hope you all are having an awesome night!

Hi guys

I'm here, got lost over at the daylily chat group---, I have been real busy starting some of the seeds I received in the Newbie pack, they seem to be coming along well. I have a dream of a beautiful garden----so i'm working hard to make it happen. The las t two days have been wounderful here, the temp is around 60 and 65, but I work the night shift at a local hospital and have to sleep, so I have not had time to take advanage of the good weather. how is the weather in your area?

Enid - the website on recycled tires was awesome! How did you find this stuff so fast? I followed down the list for other webs and found this cool site on their reference guide:

www.tirecrafting.com/mexicanpottery.html

You've got to see this! Thanks much!

Al

Enid, OK

Oh Al, see I have this problem. I am constantly surfing the web for interesting stuff! I have had the link for quite awhile, was thinking about trying tire turning but DH said no. He is afraid I will cut my arm off or something. One of these days I will do it anyway.

I didn't see the Mexican pottery version, that is way too cool.

Al,
I have this info somewhere. When I find it again I will give it to you. Can't remember if it was a magazine article or in a book.

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

I'll send ya'll one for Mother's Day. The shipping cost will be about $100 each. Thanks for all the help.

Al

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

LOL Al! It's raining again here in the desert. I planted some of your sunflowers seeds today!

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

If anybody needs Sunflower seeds I still have some, also sent a bunch to Robin for the newbie packs. Just D-Mail me if you need some. They're a lot easier to send in the mail than old tires!

Al

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL Al I love it when you have time to post on here you make me laugh. I wish I could start my sunflowers but it's too early here for those POUT. I can't wait to see what all the different ones looks like.

Cocoa, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd drop by and say hello and let my presence be officially known to all of DG :)
I've got quite a bit going on right now with plants I'm trying to grow for the first time. While others
I'm trying to keep alive that are offspring of plants that were started last year from our veggie garden.
I hope to learn a bunch and be able to share and improve my gardening skills. As well as to meet and
get to know all the wonderful people on DG :)

I've got a big list going and find I'm having to create a spreadsheet just to keep track of their names..lol

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi SilverTigris - sounds like you'll fit right in...

Cocoa, FL(Zone 9a)

Thank you Locakelly, I try anyway..lol I was going to list what I'm trying to grow right now for the first time but after starting the list decided not to as it started to get quite lengthy...lol

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Just so you know, we all like pictures - lol. What zone are you in there in Florida?

Better get to bed - 5 am comes awfully early sometimes. Weekend is over so back to work tomorrow.

Nighty nite peeps!

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Good to hear Trish!!!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Very good Trish. Glad to hear he is getting better.
Hang in there, Spring is nearer everyday.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

So glad to hear Caleb is doing so well. We'll keep you in prayers.

Dellroy, OH(Zone 6b)

Thank you Trish for keeping us posted. Glad to hear Caleb is home. Still praying for his recovery. and adding an extra prayer for his hand to take the graft. Get some rest....You must be exhausted with everything going on.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Nice to hear Caleb is home and doing better. Hope his recovery is speedy!

So glad to hear you and Caleb have made it home Trish! Hopefully he'll heal quicker in his own environment. Always nice to get your hands in the dirt isn't it? Prayers are still with you!

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Wow! - The sun's out for the second day in a row, maybe Spring's on the way already. Its actually 50 degrees outside!

Okay, I started this winter sowing thing today. I'm trying to set a limit on this so keeping it down to just 12 milk jugs for now. My wife already thinks I'm crazy nuts about this project, I guess I'll just have to show her. I'm trying not to make a big mess anyway. I've got tons of seed to use from my newbie packs from everybody, so this project is good to go.

I'm also starting some early tomatoes to put under my lights. Some of the "New Yorkers" and "Wisconsin 55" seeds are from Gramp's stash left over from last year. He absolutely loved growing tomatoes even at age 92 until he passed on last November. These I'm going to grow these into transplants to ship around May 1st for other DG members that want them. Let me know by D-Mail if you can find space in your garden for 2 of Gramp's tomato plants and I'll send them to you later when ready.

Al

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

How exciting Al that you are growing Gramp's 'maters! May is too late for me - my maters are already in the ground - lol. I'm sure you'll find some Northerners that will be glad to grow some!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Trish, Glad that Caleb is doing. Well if he has to have another graft, I pray that it takes but hope the little fellow won't have to have another one.

Pearland, TX

My world just got shattered. My 40-year old husband has to have a heart catherization on Friday. Best case scenario, they find the blockages and put in stints. Worst case scenario, they have to do open heart surgery. All the prayers that you can spare would be great. Thanks.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

We are keeping our prayers going for you also. Keep us informed of how your husband is doing and yourself. Keep the faith! We are with you.

Marti

Dellroy, OH(Zone 6b)

Prayers going out right now for your husband.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Prayers sent your way Sapphire. Hang in there. Heart surgery is not as risky as it used to be.
Many blessings sent your way.
