New bees chit chat thread...Seed Junkies welcome 09/08-09

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

If it's real fine chaff I'd just leave it and if you are trading the seeds just mention the fine chaff still left most DGer's won't mind chaff at all. What are you saving seeds from?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Good Morning Everyone.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

GM How is everyone this dreary day? It has rained here for a week now and not going to let up until this first part of this next week :((((((((((((((. I got plants to get in the ground and raining so much can't get out to do it.

arejay are you feeling better?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Good morning, Robin, and everyone! Is everybody making big plans for the weekend? I've got lots of work planned. LOL! Have to mow the lawn again, get some fall/ winter fertilizer on it, and dig several holes for various plantings. And have tons of apples to get in the freezer. Apple trees have lots of fruit this year. Has anyone frozen apples? Any advice?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Flower,
Yes I think I am feeling better. Skell I freeze apples and applesauce. I use the apples for pie so I mix them then freeze. I use the vacuum freezer bag oh food saver.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Glad to hear you think you are LOL.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning Everyone. Glad to see you back Robin.
Skellogg I've frozen apple pie filling really easy. You can also freeze them in a sugar syrup or cook 2 minutes in boiling water then pack in freezer container. Slice them the way you want them to be. Ball Blue Book has instructions for these.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Good morning, Flower! A little rain here would be great, but at least we can get out and get some things done. Sure hope all your stuff isn't floating away or washing out.
Cris, "Welcome!" Sometimes you can "gently" blow the chaff away from the seeds as well.... The seeds are generally heavier than the chaff, but don't sneeze! LOL (Can you tell I still have a cold?)
Tubby, how did your steps turn out?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Good morning, Mindy, and thanks! I've frozen pie filling too, just wondered if I could freeze them without making the pie filling. I will just do the water thing this time and see how it works! Never tried the sugar syrup, but will try some that way too. And I'll probably make some pie filling too, if I have time. Thanks! Can't find my Ball book. Think I loaned it to someone probably, and never got it back. Maybe I'll pick another one up today.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

Good morning everyone, and happy Friday! This morning, I am trying out some bolivian begonia tip cuttings and trying to root them in water. Not sure how long they take, but I came across an article online that said begonias tend to root easily in water, so I took 8 cuttings and have them in water on my desk here where I can watch them. I purchased the plants last spring from Plant Delights open house, and love the color, leaves, and bloom on them! Had lots of compliments as well. Hopefully, these will grow and I'll have some babies of my begonias for next year.

This weekend is the last open house for Plant Delights Nursery, so I'm hoping to make it down there tomorrow. I've been suffering with pneumonia the last two weeks, and on antiobiotics since last week, so I'm no longer contagious, but do have a hard time with the asthma-cough, so I hope it doesn't keep me from enjoying the tropical gardens there tomorrow. I'm dying to see them, as they're generally at their peak this time of year there.

Hope everyone has a great day & weekend!

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

Good morning everyone.,

I know we needed the rain but sheesh! It started last Sunday and has not stopped. But my DH did get three layers of my shady lasagna bed down yesterday, in the rain. Whatta guy!

Morning All

And You Thought You Had Computer Problems

'Hello, technical support, how can I help you' ?

LADY: 'Last night my computer started making a lot of hissing noises at me so I shut it down. This morning when I turned it on, the computer started hissing and cracking, then started smoking and then there was a bad smell, then nothing'.

SUPPORT: 'I will have a technician come over first thing this morning, just leave the computer just like it is, so they can find the problem and fix it, or change it out with another computer. Give me your address; phone number and the technician will be there just as soon as he can'.

When the technician got there, the lady showed the technician where the computer was, said what happened to it. This is what the technician found wrong. Take a look at the pictures. .. you won't believe your eyes!!!!!

And you thought you had computer problems!!

The technician told her: It must have been after the mouse!
The woman didn't think it was very funny at all.

That's funny, but I'd still :FAINT: I am not a snake person at all. It's taken me a LONG time to be okay with bugs and spiders (kind of have to accept them when you're a plant person". But snakes .... no thank you!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh boy I just come from looking at some stuff on ebay and somebody on there has went plumeria crazy ! There is about 3 pages of nothing but them. Anybody want plumeria ? LOL

Tubby they are yours how many do you want? Dmail me OK.
Glad you are feeing better. Here it's 3 dogs who have a favorite spot right smack dab in the middle of my biggest flower bed. No amount of pumishment will make them stay out of that one spot.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Tubby, your dogs are so cute! I only have one problem dog. The other is fine. But the pup, if he sees me plant anything, then he wants to dig it up and bring it back to me. LOL! So I just plant when he's inside.
Mindy, I would love some of your hostas too, if you have extras. Seray is sending me some seeds from hers, but would still love to have a couple plants, if you can spare some.
Blonde, how are you feeling today? Headaches still there? Let us know what great buys you find!

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Skellogg I'll send you a couple too but that's all of them as Tubby is taking the rest of them. Dmail me you info and I'll let you know when they are ready to go.

Morning everyone!

Funny Tubby. I'm like Blondie I like snakes too. Unless they're in my house. I went out the garage door two nights ago and found a coiled copperhead right inside the screen. I screened the garage with one of those curtain screens and it works great to keep the flies out and give the animals easy access. I had just been out looking for the cat and was making a second pass when I saw him laying right on the skirts of the screen, coiled, inside the door. Not nice.

If you live in the country you know what's next. Hopefully he's enjoying his new life in snake heaven. LOL

Orlando, FL

hey seray,
poooor snake even venomous they do have good in them, i catch rattlesnakes and release them far in the woods where they wont find people, i got bit by the pygmy rattler, man i almost lost my finger silly snake, i was trying to catch him and he got loose and got me. was a coool feeling lol i know i am crazy, i love the rattlesnakes they are my favorites. anyways just got back from the plant nursery, i got a philodendrom kinda different, a popcorn cassia, pink alamanda with seed pods, a free tomato plant, went on a seed hunt, got seeds for butterfly vine, scarlet wisteria, jerusalems thorn, cassia glacous, pink bowers vine, pink hollyhocks good day of shopping, all for 25 dollars oh yeah they even gave me a t-shirt. made out.

Tubby- OMG I got the creeps and heeby jeebies just looking at that snake pic! I DON'T do spider and snakes! At all! I found this extra long snake skin when I was out raking leaves a while back. It wasn't even dry yet, so he must have just shed it. Don't know what kind of snake it was. It was awesome though. I put it on the rails going up the porch and freaked my girls out with it when they camehome from school, lol. I had my gloves on when I picked it up, lol..

Blondie- you are brave for catching those rattlers. I imagine I must have them here where I live with the forest out behind me but you wouldn't find me trying to look for them, or helping them disappear. I have too much of a heart to hurt them but I would definitely run like heck, lol.. Sounds like you got some nice new babies..

Mindy, I would take a couple of Hostas off your hands if you want to throw some my way. I have a few different ones already, but I think seray inspired me to start a Hosta bed near my little pond.

Orlando, FL

hey mechelle,
well i only catch an relocate if they are going to be harmed, i catch them to teach my boys which are non poisonous and poisonous. boys will be boys. i have a black racer in my garden that my 13 year old now caught last year, it shows up every once in a while sometime startles me, my husband saw him he doesnt like snakes like i do, but this snake was trying to get to the tree next to the bushes it was in, i bet him i could place my hand under him/her to help get to the branch i won, it wasnt scared of me, maybe cause i never mess with it when i do see it.
anyways, here is one i slammed on the brakes to get out of the road harmless yellow rat

Do you guys think a heating pad or grow lamp would help my seedlings? I think it has been warm enough here for them. I keep the house in the low 70's, and they're in the windowsill. I haven't ever tried bottom watering Tubby. How soon should you put them into a bigger pot? I'm always afraid to touch them because they seem so fragile. Here's what they look like today. My little hibby is almost gone up there at the top ;-(

OMG Blondie... yeah that big guy would definitely be in my scream and run run run program. He sure is beautiful though.. I have seen a long black one with a blue belly near my veggie garden lasagna beds. He was about 4 ft long and really thin. Not big and round like your guy. I was just happy to see him slithering in the opposite direction, lol. Look at this pic I dmailed valleylynn this morning..

We were watching music downtown one night and he was just hanging out listening to he music, not bothering anybody. The lady in front of him had no idea, lol. His eyes were huge and he was just chillin' !

Thumbnail by MechelleT

Normally I wouldn't kill them either but I have two old dogs that use the door and the frogs are always under the lights at night so it's perfect snake snack city. Like my dogs too much to lose them to a copperhead. :)

Love the yellow rat snake. They are gorgeous.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Aww seray, how sweet! It looks like he is saying "Just come near me snake, and I'll jab you with my red stake right here" lol

I guess okra is good for something besides tomatoes. LOL

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Here's a scary looking one I came across about a yr ago when we first moved here. I looked her up in the bug files and found out she is a good garden friend to have. Can't remember her name, but the good ones are always scarier looking than they are.

Mindy,
Moss Rose & Nigella are the ones that are giving me grief w/the fine
stuff. Started with hollyhocks now working on a "gift".

Two grocery bags full of shrub hibiscus pods - all I know is that the colors
are light pink to cranberry and the flowers are dinner plate size.

Hear that Arejay? You'll be gifted with some of those for your stash.
I've been working on de-podding for weeks & have some drying for
you.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Love all the critter pictures. We got to have our fur babies.
Love the Yellow Rat snake but glad he was going up that tree out of the way.
Look out Birds. This must be Spider year, I have seen so may webs being built in
the middle of nowhere. It is amazing how they do it.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Oh Blondie, nice crinums and pond by the way. You'll have to send a better pic of the pond. What kind of rocks are those? I am thinking of doing rocks around my little pond..

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Oh yeah, check this out. Butterfly/caterpillar nests?
