Big Family Tubby! Love seeing everyone's babies. Thanks for sharing. I'm off to work for awhile.

Hey Tubby. The other day a pigeon came strolling up my walk way and I went out to see what my dogs were barking at and there it was. It's pretty and has a band on one foot(leg) Green colored with numbers on it. My husband wanted to keep it but we don't know how to tell if it is a male or female and what kind it is to get a mate for it. Do you know how to tell what it is? (breed and sex) I'll take a picture of it tomorrow, it's too dark tonight to see it. We made a big cage for it and it seems very happy. But would like to find it a mate to keep it company. It has a green color around it's neck but if you look at another direction, it looks pink colored. it looks kinda grey/green with chocolate spots on it's back wings. White spots on it's nose. Very pretty bird. I think the storm blew it in and it was too weak and wet to continue on it's way.

Good night Seray. Watch out for the rain, it's coming again and it's suppose to be hard and heavy again this time. All day tomorrow. Several inches coming.

Mekos, your friendly pigeon may well belong to somebody. The fact that it is banded and seems friendly to your caged environment is a real sign that your pigeon might be a "racer" or "homer" trained in sport flying. Perhaps he had a place to go but for some reason waylaid his course due to weather, injury, hunger or some other reason. If left free to fly he will likely continue his journey home, where ever that may be. He has a mission to complete, please don't tempt him to stay.

Al

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

mekos If he leaves he is very likely a homer.. no amount of time will change that..If he has been there about 30 days and stays he is not a homer..Positive.. I have had pigoens on & off since I was 9yrs..now since 1982...

Since we're sharing pics of our pets, these are ours. We have 2 calico cats. This is Trixie. She's the sweetest thing and never makes a sound. She'll squeak if you accidentially step on her but has never meowed. She has terrible allergies.

Thumbnail by LollyJean

He has only been here a few days but doesn't want to leave. It just walks around and eats. If I leave him out, a cat will get him so we put him in a pen to protect him since he wouldn't leave. The first dat it was here we just watched it and fed it , later that night, I brought it in to my screen room and it rained for 10 days so he stayed inside, but yesterday we let it out and it just walked around and ate from the ground. He seems lost. He doesn't fly, just walks. I live in the country with chicken hawks and dogs and cats roaming the wild all the time and it wouldn't last a day out there without flying away. So my husband wanted to keep it and get it a mate. I'd try to find it's owner if I knew how.

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

And this is Cookie. I'm a sucker for calicos and my DD and I were delivering girl scout cookies (hence her name) to a house with kittens and DD fell in love with her. Next thing you know she's coming home with us.

Cute LollyJean.
I'm going to turn in for tonight, talk tomorrow. Good night everyone. Thanks Tubby, we thought it might be one of the homing pigeons, but was wet and tired, so we took it in, but it just keeps walking around and hanging out here. Maybe when it eats more and gets stronger we'll try it again and see if it will fly. If it doesn't go, maybe we will find another so it won't be alone.
Night.

Mekos - take another look at the number on the band, it may be important.
Then check website for pigeon fans: www.interbug.com/pigeon/lost.html

Mekos as for sex of pigeon....
Male will follow her where ever she go's..To keep other males away..Strutting around boobing his head up & down with chest filled with air..
During mating when hen is getting ready to lay the male will drive hen to nest..Some say the harder he is at this the better parent he will be..

After they lay the male will set morning around 9am and again after noon around 2pm..This can vary..After eggs hatch male will keep feeding babies till they are fully grown..Hen will stop when she lays new clutch of eggs..

Good morning all! Wow, this is very interesting info on the pigeons! Thanks for all the info, Tubby and Al. I am finding it very interesting even tho we don't have many pigeons here that we see. Mekos, you will have to keep us posted as to your new addition, even tho it may be a temporary addition. So cool!
Here's a picture of our first corgi, now about 5 yrs old. She is such a sweetie! Loves everyone!

And here's one of her cohort in crime, our male, about 1 1/2 now. He's is an active thing, and he is the one that will dig up my plants and bring them back to me if he sees me plant them. LOL Had to have 2 dogs, one for each twin grandson. We also have 2 cats, Dufus and Starvin' Marvin. Dufus was born with 3 legs, and nobody wanted a "broken kitty" and Marvin we found in a blizzard as a kitten, starved and abondoned, only about 3 weeks old.

It is cold here. The heat is on. You all have cute friends there. Let me know when you want a new thread.
Robin

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Hi Robin, cold here too, but I refuse to turn the heat on yet> LOL! I did build a fire in the fireplace the other day tho. Tee hee! I used the excuse of needing to because of my cold. What's the temp there today? We are at about 40 now. But the weather man said on the telly the other night that we won't get winter until February. Yeah, right.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

No winter until Feb, did they say that for here too? I think the temp here is hovering around 30. Brr.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

LOL Nope, sorry, but they didn't mention your part of the country. And since we've had 2 frosts already, not sure I want to believe them. I'm guessing that they are way off again!

Orlando, FL

good morning all

blondie

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Hi blondie, yep, and the kids play better when it's not to hot! Couldn't ever live in your part of the country. Too hot for me, and way to many bugs and snakes. Yuck! LOL

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Skellogg- those puppies are just adorable! And very pretty kitties, Lolly.

Good info on the pigeons Al & Tubby. I think we'll keep you ;-)

I think you scared Mekos away, she wants to keep it ;-)

Our temps have been in the low 70's- but humid. So it always feels like 90 when it's 70. It keeps looking like a little bit of rain today, but I hope not. I'm just sick of the rain. Gonna be outside stripping the old roof off of our shop today. Or at least my hubby and son will >:-) he he .. I'm sure I will find something to go PLANT or DIG today! Be back later.. Have a good day guys

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Cute fur babies everyone!

Off to basketball, then football... Robin, I'll send you some of my heat. D-mail me your address - lol!

Flowers are lovely Arejay!! I've never heard of 'turtle heads'. I'm surprised they're blooming as cold as your weather has been. Do you go stir crazy during the long winter months?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I take a lot of pictures and sort a lot of seeds in the winter. I feed the deer and the wild turkey too. They are fun to watch.I have a couple of hobbies that pass my time. Oh and a seven year old.

LOL A seven year old would eliminate cabin fever I'm sure. Deer and turkey are great to watch. Grew up on a big farm and always did the same. Here we have foxes. There's a den in the woods beside us. Elusive things but beautiful.

Hey you guys, been raining all day and couldn't get on line. No I'm not wanting to keep the bird, just too soft hearted to let it get eat by preditors. My hubby used to raise the ones that tumble, way back before I met him. He would rather keep it than let it get eat as well, but thinks it will be lonely all alone. Thus the mate thing. He did say he will let it out again Monday and if it flys off, great and if not, it gets to stay. (Pray for flight) I checked it's wings and see no damage and it weighs twice what it did when it walked in so I'm thinking it was very hungry and weak so now maybe it is healthy enough to fly ok. At first I could feel it's brest bones and now it's just plump. Monday will be the test day.
With all the rain we were only in the LOW 70's today but next week is supposed to be back in the upper 80's. Last weeks rain took our lakes up by 3-5 feet.
Well, guess I'll go finish answering d-mail and get off here. Thanks AL and Tubby for the info and will check out that web link.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

I have a confession to make. I was picking up Kentucky Fried Chicken tonight, and there was a hibiscus in beautiful full bloom ... and it had seed pods on it.

And I plucked a couple (not all) of them off.

Does this make me a bad person? Should I join a seed collectors anonymous group, or am I in it? :(

Glad to hear from you Mekos. Was wondering if you had to swim out today from all the rain. We'll hope for a successful takeoff Monday. LOL

Isn't the name of this thread really Seed Junkie's chit chat? LOL I think you're safe with us jlj.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

(And I plucked a couple (not all) of them off.) The not all means you are safe!!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

In all honesty, what saddens me is when I see these commercial office buildings changing out their landscapes every four months. When I worked at one of them, the landscapers would come in and throw all the plants in a dump truck to be taken to the dump. One year, I snagged a bunch of elephant ears from them ... probably a dozen or so, full grown. They were bound for the trash, but have a nice, loved home in my yard now. Odds are, these hibs I saw tonight will face the same fate ... unless I'm driving by when they're changing them out, in which case, they will join the elephant ears in my yard as well. I hate seeing plants go to waste.

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

That makes you perfectly normal jlj. At least on here.

I stopped on the side of the road today and got some of the swamp sunflowers so I could harvest the seeds. I thought my DD would die of embarrassment!
