Mekos, go check the lasagna bed thread, I left you a message there about the last layer ;-)
CLOSED: Seed Junkie Chit Chat - Newbies Welcome 9/05/09
Welcome Newbies! We are also doing a seed auction this week. Go here for the info: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1036526/ We like to keep busy around here! If you have any questions about anything, just let us know. We are all pretty new ourselves, but you'll find a plethera of knowledge here! Happy Gardening!
Do any of you ever wear aprons when you're gardening? I never do, don't wear clothes I'm worried about when I'm outside. I was just curious..
Hey arejay, had 2 newbies in zone 7 and 2 in zone 8. Finally! First ones since I took those zones. Yippee! We love newbies!
Hey chelle don't feel bad I keep looking for people too. Maybe found a couple since zones were broken LOL
aww, flower, my sister calls me 'chelle! You guys need to go check out the seed auction. Great bids, adding seeds daily, and lots of surprises! Falling Forward to Spring theme.. Anyone can join in! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1036526/.. Oh and I added the link to the auction in my newbie dmails! Always thinkin', lol
Me too, seray, lol .. I just sweat to death the whole time I'm outside, in my t-shirt & jeans also. Daves Garden should make aprons with their logos for peple who like them.
Mechelle,
I just checked out the seed auction link and was wondering, where did you get those seed starter trays? I haven't been able to find any. Also, I just wanted to say that your avocado trees are very nice. I love avocados and since they can be pretty expensive at the supermarket I have always wondered if I could start my own tree from a pit. Did you do anything special to it? Good night all.
-Brittany
P.S. I too garden in a t-shirt and jeans. I got a bunch of free t-shirts in college, so now they're my gardening wardrobe. :-)
Me Chelle, I had to reread your post and laughed my head off. I thought, at first, that you said you do not wear clothes when you garden. Silly me.
BTW, this is my first year on DG. I stumbled upon it by accident, also. I timidly joined the piggy swap last year, and I swear that I had not had so much fun in a long time. And I learned so much from everyone. I had never even considered planting seeds, much less saving them. Now I am addicted to seed saving. I cannot look at a pod without wanting to catch a few seeds. The pods are everywhere!! Go to a park or walk down the street. Usually if you ask, people will gladly let you take some of their seeds. I now keep envelopes in the car, just in case I meet a seed that wants to come home with me.
So, don't let the Piggy Swap intimidate you. The plastic baggies are cheap and easy, homemade paper envelopes work just fine, as well. I made some of the envelopes, but I don't have the patience to make them look nice.
I got so many seeds for the price of postage. When I look at all of the pretty flowers, I think of the person(s) who sent me the seeds. They are the seeds of friendship and they seem to even bloom better than a packet of seeds from the store.
I wintersowed most of my seeds in milk jugs (first time) and planted them in the spring in my lazy version of a lasagna bed (one layer of Tagro over a layer of cardboard). Here is a picture.
Have fun, and I hope to see you at the Piggy Swap trough.
Beautiful flowers Lynn... I think alot of us are intimidated by this piggy swap, but im sure it will be lots of fun and when its over, bet we want to do it again next year..;-) Trish We like to have experienced people around us to make us feel better....I've never winter sown any seeds before..I was reading the latest forum about it last night....When I was thinking of winter sowing, I was thinking more along the lines of spreading my seeds on the ground this time of year like mother nature does...I just have to figure out which seeds should be sown now, and which I should wait to sow in early spring.... I to am new to seed collecting, but I find I notice seeds and pods now on things I never looked twice at before....Trish
TY Flower for the package..I will repay your kindness one day ....
Good morning Everyone. Mechelle I have a garden apron made for me by one of my sisters but I don't wear it in the garden. I also have a collection of kitchen aprons which I only wear when baking bread or cookies because I get lots of flour all over me doing those two cooking tasks. I skip the jeans and just wear shorts and t shirt unless I'm doing something that needs long pants for protection of my tender skini then it's usually sweat pants cause my everyday jeans are only fit for the rag bag LOL.
Good Morning Everyone, Happy Thursday!
Goldberry, hello and welcome! I just moved here to TN from Galt, Ca last year after being born & raised in Ca! I worked near Natomas in Rio Linda for almost 5 years. So I know exactly where Carmichael is. I have to say that I loved gardening in Ca, but I never had the room I have here, and I never have to water here which is really cool! No one even owns a sprinkler much less waters their lawn and everything stays beautiful, green, and lush all year long. I do miss being able to buy alfalfa for my horses though ;-) But hay prices are dirt cheap here. Anyway, I got these particular seed packets at Family Dollar which I know isn't in Ca, but I did buy them before in Galt at Longs or Rite Aid. These I got for a steal at $1 a pack, but they are usually not too expensive. I would look in the garden section at one of those drug stores or Home Depot or Lowes probably still has some. I am planning to go to Family Dollar today to see what they have leftover from their garden clearance and I will buy them up and share with whomever needs them. Hope to see your bid at the auction!
Hi there Lynn, no, Iol, I would never want to scare nature that way! But lol! Mekos and I are participating in the Piggy auction this time. I think it will be fun! Something new.. Then I am doing a big daylily swap with some ladies on a Yahoo forum. You send in a box and get a box. Pretty simple. But I am really looking for daylilies right now to fill up the 150' or so lasagna beds I did jut for daylilies. You should go check out that thread as well. It's really neat & fun too.
Huney, how are ya? I thought of you yesterday as I planted my daylilies in their lasagna beds ;-) Eveything is doing fine that you sent, with the exception of the purple & green wandering jew that didn't make it. The one succulent you sent is doing fine too, but the hens & chicks didn't make it either. I put each one of their little leaves in their own little pot hoping they'd live and nope. But the purple wandering jew is doing well with lots of new sprouts and the one you sent me that looks like Pothos, doing good too. The leaves turned brown and fell off so they are just the vines with a little bit of new growth and they look green & healthy. I was going to ask if I was safe to plant the Mex Petunia outside yet. Ihave it indoors in a nice pot in the western windowsill and it seems to like it there. How are all your babies doing? Do you need anything else?
Need coffee, badly, brb ;-)
Morning all.
Lynn, welcome! I am going to winter sow in milk jugs this year for the first time. I can usually get them to sprout, but I seem to have problems hardening them off and moving outside, so figure this will eliminate that problem.
Kelly, I got your spider lilies sent off yesterday. Didn't make it on Tuesday, sorry. (Darn work gets in the way!)
Welcome, Brittany! You won't be shy for long here, as we seem to have a way of getting people out of that! LOL!
Just scanned thru the upper posts and was wondering who was out gardening without clothes, too! Had to read that twice. LOL!
My MGs are doing great now. Took them this long to really flower good, obviously about 3 weeks behind still.
Still not sure about the piggy swap. Am watching tho, as it may be a possibility for next year?
Oh and Goldberry, the avocado trees are my sister in laws. They are staying with us for a while and she brought them to my house. My mom used to do this when I was a kid, but hers never grew like my SILs. You just take your avocado pit, wash it off, nick the bottom, poke a toothpick on either side of the pit, and put it in a cup in the windowsill. Here is a pic of one of my SIL's young ones so you can see what it looks like. She just let it get big enough and kept transplanting in good Miracle Grow soil she says. I don't know if my SIL or BIL has done most of the caretaking because they joke back and forth about how good THEIR avocado trees are doing, lol. In our zone, I don't think they will make it outside, at least thatt's what I've been told. But I had neighbors with huge avocado trees in Ca. My little neighbor probably started hers. She did her little hispanic voodoo on it and had it for years. My Morning Glory tried to grow over her fence and attach it to her tree once. She sprayed it with Round Up on her side of the fence. Pretty bold but I didn't get mad because I would at least think of doing the same thing if it were my avocado tree, lol ;-)
Hi Guys,
Thanks for being so wonderfuly sweet!
I'm back and ready to yack! I do have to say hi to Brittany and I'm so sure I butchered the spelling but, couldn't wade back through all the threads to find how to spell it...brain dead...only had one cup of coffee so far...and hi if I miss anyone else new I promise I will catch up.
I do have good news! You know how we have been in the worst draught since 1887? Well we have had rain! The only problem is...we have had RAIN...lol...it's standing everywhere! You know how they say be careful what you wish for...lol. Well at least the draught is broken. This is how our rain tends to go here. We haven't had a completely clear day since I spoke to you last and there is rain predicted for the entire week. Never ask locakelly to send rain...she had a couple hours one day and I said send some this way and she sure did! lol NOW I have to nurse my little seedlings along until it drys out enough to put them in the ground...lol...always something to whine about...
Anyway going to play with my seedlings, start more seeds and plant some seedlings up so they are even stronger when the soil dries out a little...have a green thumb kinda day!
Hugs...Jamie
Morning Miss Jamie, good to see you here today. We had a similar drought in Calif a few years back. We were on water rationing for Idk like 5 years. The lakes were drying up, it was awful. They were lower than I had ever seen them. But then one year we had flooding for like 2 weeks straight and snap! no more drought. Weather is a wierd thing sometimes, lol. Now I am just used to the major thunderstorms we have here regularly! It rains at least once a week here. Just enough to keep everything green. Have fun with those seeds.. I am going to go cuddle up in my bed, drink my coffee, and watch the news.. HAGD everyone!
I want to thank you guys in a separate post!
Thank you for the wonderful Newbie envy that Robin sent. I know Robin did the sending but, without everyone pitching in it wouldn't be possible. I also recieved a wonderful envy full of seeds from Cue and Huney and an amaryls and daylily from huney too. I also got a surprise box in the mail from Mit of Irises for helping with the Auction! A girl could get spoiled here...lol...
Most of these things came at a very important time for me...they won't only be great additions to my garden they will add very, very special memories...I just wanted everyone to know just how amazingly special you all are!
Love...Jamie
Morning Mechelle! Gosh, I was thinking "Sure wish it would rain here," but maybe I'll just keep moving the sprinklers. Sure don't want 2 weeks of flooding! LOL!
GM all,
Got lots to do today and company coming so probaly won't be on here alot. HAGD
Hi LynnW
Your bed looks great. Very lush! Encouraging for us Lasagna bed makers who get wore out hauling Black kow. LOL
Love your SIL's avocados Mechelle. Just read an article on starting them. Was surprised that most needed cross pollination to set fruit. Here's the article:
http://www.weekendgardener.net/plant-propagation/plant-avocado-seed-090909.htm
Now I just have to eat enough avocados to find the two I like best. LOL How late can you plant daylilies in your area?
Good Morning everyone!
I've been over to check on my seed ID on the other thread and the concensus seems to be that it's some type of IRIS and to plant the seeds to see what I get LOL. So that's what I'm going to do :)
I think I'll also go get some more of the seeds and offer them to any daring souls during the piggy swap :) My Mystery Iris seed!
Good morning all my seedy peeps!
Nice Garden, Lynn!!
sk - I'll be looking for the box! Thanks again! You're too sweet.
Whoever got my rain needs to send it back!!! It's supposed to be 105 F today! Aaarrrrrgggggghhhh!! I'm sooooooo tired of summer already . . .
Been busy with work and football practice and basketball practice and trying to keep my garden alive in this heat, so been a little scarce on here. Took me a while to catch up on all the posts - LOL.
Hey, Mechelle - I also thought you were gardening in your bday suit - lol. Sorry!
loca
LOL Loca.. 105? OMG .. My grandpa lives in Kingman so he must be getting what you are too. Taking my kids to watch the Titans vs. Steelers game at TGI Fridays.. They want to go to the mall, and that works out for din din.. woohoo gonna have a Bloody Mary fo sho! Me & 4 teenagers, in the car for almost an hour, yup I'm drinkin'! Just one, don't worry ;-)
CC, it looks alot like our wild irises that we have here. Even the seed pods are similar, but ours don't have seeds like that. Ours have a round seed, not layered in the pod like yours. It will be interesting to see what they do turn out to look like!
Only one, Mechelle! OK? We spend all our $$$ on plants and postage so can't really afford to bail you outta the can . . .
OMG - Kingman? It's even hotter there that it is in Phoenix most of the time. I definitely feel for your grandpa - lol.
I'm curious to see what they are as well. When I was in Maine last month I collected seeds from things I have no clue what they are either. Guess I'll know when and if they sprout - lol.
Hello Mechelle...you must have babies those hens and chicks to much lol ..All I do is throw down the leaves and they multiply... same way with the wandering jew(purple and green) I have it growing all beneath the porch where pieces of it have just fell off...I can send you some more of each of those if you want me too...
The mexican petunias can go outside... Be sure to put them somewhere you dont mind them spreading...In loose soil they can be invasive...I plant mine in hard soil little to no nutrients and so far they have stayed in clumps without sprouting up everywhere... they like the sun, and once established require little in the way of watering...My kind of plant for sure...
Msjamie It is good to see you back..Hope you are taking care of yourself, while your our tending to others...Sorry for your loss, friends and loved ones make our lives special its so hard to pick up the pieces and move on after a death... Just one day at a time... ..Thinking of you Trish
Pic of flowers from my confederate rose
Good Morning Everyone,
I am still trying to keep up with this thread. I don't know how some of you keep up with several simultaneously. I am very impressed!
Mechelle, you lived in Galt!?! I grew up in Galt (before it grew like crazy) then lived in Woodbridge/Lodi. I just moved to Carmichael last month, so I'm still trying to figure out where all of the stores are, etc. I'm still shocked you said Galt. lol. What a small world. Also thank you for the info on the avocado seeds. Sounds like a fun little project.
Jamie, don't worry, you spelled my name perfectly. One of the few who has ever done so on the first try (without looking).
Seray, thank you for the link about the avocados. I didn't know until I read it that it would take 5-7 years to bear fruit. Good to know so I don't assume it's my fault I have no fruit.
HAGM everyone!
-Brittany
Hey Brittany... You will get the hang of it and before you know it you will be all over DG just like the rest of us....
I am making plans to attend a DG RoundUp in Little Rock next moth ..I cant wait to meet all Mid-South Gardening girls and gents.....Sounds like so much fun...
Hi all come greet a newbie on the brug thread..
Our SW RU and plant swap is November 7th - can't wait!
Brittany - you will catch on very quickly - lol. Even the slow ones amongst us have it down by now . . .
loca I hope your not talking about me LOL
HI Flower how did your day go?
Oh going just fine . Am still tired after the trip yesterday. Got out a did some painting on my rose trellis. Going to take me for ever to get it done with my stupid shoulder hurting.
Now don't you overdo and make that shoulder take even longer to heal. The weather is trying to make up it's mind whether to storm or not. But while it's doing it we are getting a nice cool breeze.
