So what's a Piggy Swap anyway?? I'm still a newbie at this, can somebody explain?

Al

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

It is a swap where you list everything you might like to have and then you list what all you have then swapping starts and you get as many as you can and then you have to send at least as many back as you received. I was in one and I didn't really care for it so I just set back and watch now LOL.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

For all of those that ask for the lilies . They will go out today as soon as I can get to the PO. Please everyone let me know when you get them and if they are ok. I made my boxes so don't laugh at them LOL. First time doing that.

Great going flower. You had fun too ,didn't you? This could be something ,we all look forward to getting one of Flower's boxes! Woo Hoo. Have fun Flower.
Al, I almost stopped because I didn't understand, but I let those ladies talk me into staying telling me how much fun it is, but they said you only stay as long as YOU want and can stop at any time. You list what you have for trade and list what you would want to have, then when it starts- you go OINK at the one you want and they oink at yours, that they want. Then at the end, everyone sends their seeds to Starlight and she puts all the seeds you won to your bag and mails to you and all the others too. Since it will be around Christmas when you will send the seeds you can add a Christmas card or trinket in there IF you would like to. If you have extra seeds you want to just donate to the huricane victims to help them start their gardens again, you just enclose those as well, and she makes bags for them and sends them seeds also.
This may be a little off but it's the way I understood it. The first year is learning, slow, and having fun, the next time you will know how it's done and you can run with it. I may be dropping out soon, but wanted to see how it works. (I'm taking several shovels with me, in case I have to dig my way out.)

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL So you think you will need 2 shovels HUH?

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Oh Mekos, it doesnt sound all that bad does it? I just wanna try it, lol.. Come on buddy, don't back out on it before it starts ;-)

I probably should start shoveling NOW, shouldn't I Flower. What you aint telling me?!?
AL, don't you dare run out and leave me there totally alone in that seed pile. I'm new also. We'll just learn together and shovel together if necessary. Mechelle signed up too, and several more newbies.

I think we will enjoy it Mechelle. (I might be frightfully nieve though) Thus-taking shovels to help me escape when I get in a panic.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Go Al, Go Al, Go Al..... lmao

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Yeah it'll be fun ;-) Nieve? nah... Seed Crazy? Maybe.. Lasagna Bed fanatic? Me, definitely! ooh ooh I gotta show you guys my SIL Avocado Trees she started: started from avocado pitts.. crazy, in TN.. We're afraid to put them outside.

I got to dig up plants and box them up also for a couple trades going out today. Back later.

Oh Mechelle, thos are beauties! Great job with them. You go girl.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

And check out the upside down tomatoes my BIL started: He saw it on tv and just bought his own buckets at the dollar store and whallah! He has 2. And guess what? He has built 2 greenhouses in his lifetime (he's 63) and HE IS GOING TO BUILD ME A GREENHOUSE!!!!! Oh yeah it's my birthday, Oh yeah, it's my birthday.. So glad you guys can't see me doing the Cabbage Patch, lmao

I guess I'm still having second thoughts about this Piggy Swap.

I have plenty of seeds to share and swap, and a lot that I really don't even need. I don't have a problem with sharing them with selected DG friends, charity donations, or Robin's newbie program. These I can just box up, send off and be done with it. Besides, it's nice to get stuff in return when available.

I think the problem that I have is that I don't have a lot of time to deal with the other issues involved. Like stuffing 50 envelopes with "who wants what". I somewhat admire people that enjoy doing this sort of thing, though, and certainly wouldn't want to deprive them of their fun.

Thanks again for all the advice. For being the "odd man out", you girls have really made me feel welcome here.

Al

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Al,
Do run away from the Piggy swap Al they need you there....It isnt as much as you think there are what 20 on the list and you have say 20 things to swap so twenty of your prepackaged envies just have to have a name added....and you have until December . You get lots of new choices of seed that you dont really even think about or know exist. I was really teasing all of you when I said take shovels and boxing Mits (hi Mit)
You will be fine any and all of you to join. They will help you through. Go for it!! Oink, Oink

Because of recent abductions in daylight hours, refresh yourself
of these things to do in an emergency situation...

This is for you, and for you to share
with your wife, your children, everyone you know.

After reading these 9 crucial tips,
forward them to someone you care about.

It never hurts to be careful
in this crazy world we live in.

1.. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :

The elbow is the strongest point on your body..
If you are close enough to use it, do!

2.. Learned this from a tourist guide.

If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,
DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.
Toss it away from you....
Chances are that he is more interested
in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the
wallet/purse.

RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car,
kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole
and start waving like crazy...
The driver won't see you, but everybody else will.
This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars
after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit
(doing their chequebook, or making a list, etc.)

DON'T DO THIS!

The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity
for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head,
and tell you where to go.

AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR,
LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE...

If someone is in the car
with a gun to your head

DO NOT DRIVE OFF,
Repeat:
DO NOT DRIVE OFF!

INSTEAD gun the engine, and speed into anything, wrecking the car.
Your Air Bag will save you.

If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it!

As soon as the car crashes bail out and run.

It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot,
or parking garage:

A.) Be aware:

Look around you,
look into your car,
at the passenger side floor,
and in the back seat

B.) If you are parked next to a big van,
enter your car from the passenger door.
Most serial killers attack their victims
by pulling them into their vans while the women
are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car
parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,
and the passenger side.... If a male is sitting alone
in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back
into the mall, or work, and get a
guard/policeman to walk you back out..
I
T IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than
dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator
instead of the stairs.
Stairwells are horrible places to be alone
and the perfect crime spot.
This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,

ALWAYS RUN!

The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and
even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ.
RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying
to be sympathetic:

STOP

It may get you raped, or killed.
Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking,
well educated man, who ALWAYS played
on the sympathies of unsuspecting women.

He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often
asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle,
which is when he abducted
his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point:

Someone just told me that her friend heard
a crying baby on her porch the night before last,
and she called the police because it was late
and she thought it was weird.. The police told her
'Whatever you do, DO NOT
open the door..'

The lady then said that it sounded like the baby
had crawled near a window, and she was worried
that it would crawl to the street and get run over.
The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way,
whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.'

He told her that they think a serial killer
has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax
women out of their homes thinking that someone
dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it,
but have had several calls by women saying that
they hear baby's cries outside their doors
when they're home alone at night.

10. Water scam!

If you wake up in the middle
of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is
a burst
pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your
outside taps full ball so that you will go out to investigate and
then attack.

Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbours!
Please pass this on
This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because
the Crying Baby Theory was mentioned on
America 's Most Wanted when they profiled
the serial killer in Louisiana
I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know.
It may save a life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle..

I was going to send this to the ladies only,
but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc.,
you may want to pass it onto them, as well.

Send this to any woman you know that may need
to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it
and it's better to be safe than sorry..
Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or
love one's life

Thanks Tubby!!! I will reread this again and again until I have it memorized.

To all lily takers ! They are now on their way so watch for them.

For all of those who pass on seeds, plants or what have you to others, this is such a selfless act that brings so much joy and hope to others, you may never know the kind of impact you have made on someone's life and it may seem like such a small thing to do, but I want you to know, it's big. The joy someone feels to open a box or envelope and find the surprise is too big for words. Thank you all so much for the love and kindness you share with others, just because you can. May God bless you each and every day of your lives. May the Lord bless you and keep you, make his face to shine upon you, may he lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. May the blessings of the most high fall on you today. Bless you and thank you all. You are all, preceious angels in my eyes.

Thank You Jan, This was the perfect moment for you to share.

I have a question ..I found a plant in our local park that had been planted in a nice round spot alongside the road. The plant is about 3-4 ft tall.. the flowers were long gone on them, but they had a ton of seed pods, so I clipped a couple of them. The problem is, I have no idea what the flower looks like or what the plant was.

Where's the best place to ask for some help in IDing them? I don't have a pic of the plant, cause I didn't have my camera with me. But I've taken some pics of the seed pod, because it's so big. The seeds are lined up inside the pod of course and when they came out, they're flat on both sides because of how tight they were in the pod.
I'll show you the pod here.. do any of you recognize it and is it worth keeping the seeds? LOL

Thumbnail by ClanCampbell

Sorry Clan, I don't have a clue. Maybe plant a seed and try to grow one to see what it will do. If no one here knows, post on the plant ID forum with wheather the plant was tall skinny, bushy - what the leaves look like if you can remember, any info will help them to narrow it down and get an ID. Good luck.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

OHHHHHHH I don't know either but I know what it looks like to me. It puts me in the mind of one of those big worm mouths that was in the movie Tremors. EKKKKKKK !!!!

Montrose, AR(Zone 8a)

I have no clue clan what flower that seed pod came from...Sorry

Hello all..

Very touching expression of your feelings Jan, and may all those blessings be returned to you...Your a Pretty Precious Angel yourself......Any of us who have been recipients of your seeds, plants, and your words of knowledge will testify to that...Im sure many people are still out there just waiting for your kindness to touch their hearts, even if they dont know it yet...Im sure your heart is filled with enough goodness to spread among many continents. Keep on sharing...... Trish

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Mekos, wonderful words said but do you realize that they go back to you. You yourself have shared so much with they rest of us and what we share is just a little pay back for the giving and love you have shared with us.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1036526/

Big Hug from all of us Mekos. Thank you for your kind blessings and keeping us on our toes. We appreciate your humor. Wouldn't be the same around here without you razing Cue. LOL Or enticing us to trade seeds or to write poems or to throw ourselves in a pig trough with you. (We're standing by with our shovels to get you out of there if you need us.)

Thanks everyone, you are all too kind. I'll take you up on those shovels if (when)I start sinking. get to the auction and bid. I get to bid in this one too.( Big smile). Lots of kool things there.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

HI Everyone
Mekos you are the sweetest of us all.
I had a lazy day today guess I needed it after all that running around over the weekend.
I did do a little weeding and got the shady bed ready to dig up and redo the plants in it.
I need to see what I can offer Mechelle on this auction I want some of those things she's listed.

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Rofl at flowerfantasy.. I thought the same thing!! I loved that silly movie :)

I think I'll go back with a camera and take a pic of the plants..I just know that the way that it was grouped and where it was at in the park.. they were definitely planted there for people's enjoyment! SO.. if I don't find out what plant it is, I may offer it as the Mystery Plant to those who want to take the risk of seeing it in their own garden! :)

I'll let you know what I find out..

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

That is a kinda scary looking seed pod, Chris! Now I'm curious too as to what it is . . .

Yup - mekos is the sweetest there is . . .

Oh Flower, now we won't be able to sleep with the thoughts of those things sliding around here. It does look like the things there on the movie. I'm curious as to what it is, now.

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Here's another shot..maybe it'll help get rid of the first one LOL

I still have no clue, but did see you wanted a lantana. I have several colors if you would like some cuttings. I have solid white, orange/pink/yellow, and some red. The red has some blooms that have yellow mixed in and some just blood red color. They root so easy, just stick the stem in potting soil and water. I have solid lavender out there somewhere, but it's not blooming right now, so not sure where it is. (Pieces break off and I just poke them back in the dirt and they root.) Didn't know if you wanted all these colors or just that one listed, but if you are interested d-mail me. I'll share. (kissing up here,if it turns out to be a good plant- I want some seeds).LOL
Don't say nothing you guys, I know you thinking the same thing. I just beat you to it.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

OK.. Mekos - i have a mystery for you to solve...

I have two seedlings remaining from the 5 'Dragons heart' hibiscus seeds you gave me (only 4 sprouted, and two i gave away, that left me with 2)

well.. all is well and they are healthy and putting out new leaves all of the time, but all of a sudden. the new leaves coming in resemble a maple leaf.. only the 'three points' are more defined and elongated than a maple leaf. any idea why the sudden change in leaf shape/ is this normal for this cultivar?

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Well CC that pic doesn't do much better for me. Kinda creepy looking LOL

Yep. All is well, Cue. They are just growing. Keep watching. They look a little different as they grow. Leaves change shapes, as the plant matures. The ones I sent you, I purchased ,and were new seeds. You got to show us pictures when they bloom.

Mechelle, and anyone who hasn't found the tiny plastic baggies to put seeds in, go to wal-mart and go to the bead/ craft department. They are several different sizes there to store beads in. Pick which ever size you like best. You get maybe 25-50 baggies for a dollar or two. I can't remember exactly how many comes to a pack, but a lot of them. Dollar general stores have the little pages of stickers to write the names of the seeds on - 10-15 pages of 12-15 stickers for a dollar or two. You can get white ones or colored ones(wal-mart has these also, but dollar store is cheaper) Look in the stationery section with school supplies and tape and stuff. In wal-mart at the wedding dept. you can find the little drawstring cloth baggies to Catch seeds with.
Some have asked for this info. so thought I'd let all newbies know.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I got 100 of them at WallyWorld for 99 cents. I think they're like 2" x 3" or close. Perfect size for seeds.
