Great pictures Kassy...love the sky. Either that is a large puff ball, or you are a garden Gnomette in tennis shoes...grin

Sending cool breeze thoughts your way Lynnie...maybe even a moment or two of cloud cover...no rain til tonight though.

Keaau, HI

Doesn't OOPS translate to oops?

Hey Kassy, looks like a Giant Puffball, Calvatia gigantea! When they're young they're quite edible!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

OK Dave, you are just the person I wanted to talk to then ^_^

What do you call young for these huge things?

Keaau, HI

When they are white throughout. Looks like the one next to your shoe is perfect for the frying pan.
Add a little olive oil, butter, garlic, sea salt, and veggies. Makes a great stir-fry!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

OH, running back out to make sure it is ok yet!!
Need to check the yard for more too ^_^
BF usually has a few that come up in different places every year. He had a friend that he use to call to come over and get them, because that friend liked them. BF doesn't like mushrooms :(
I asked him what ever happened to that friend recently, and he said "he died" :o :o :o
I wasn't about to touch the mushroom until someone could tell me what it was!

Keaau, HI

Giant Puffballs are some of the best eating mushrooms on the planet! You can't buy them.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

OH and Dave, I wasn't talking about oops, I was talking about brb :p

Lets see if Dave can keep up with the chat dictionary ^_^

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

OMG,
brb

Keaau, HI

That's not fair Kassy! I haven't even finished learning American English yet!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

ROTFL

ok pay attention Dave :p

ROTFL = rolling on the floor laughing
LOL = laughing out loud
OMG = oh my god
brb = be right back

hmmmmmmmm let see, are there any more that you should know.....Hmmmmm
Oh and Jean had one of her own...............LOL

I picked it Dave............I think I should have picked it yesterday, but I didn't know for sure then.................btw.......oops................. btw = by the way............LOL
Ok btw, my BF was just kidding about his friend being dead!

OK, I'm going to go cut it and see what it looks like.
BF's friend would pan fry them in butter.............That sounds good too, especailly when you have a BF who won't eat them :(
Maybe I have to look for a new BF so I can make stirfry with it..............j/k..... Wait!!!! But then I wouldn't get the mushrooms!!!

oops j/k = just kidding

Dang I better stop, I'm remembering way to may of them. Going to cut it now to see what it looks like ^_^

Keaau, HI

Thanks Kassy, I was thinking brb was short for burrbb.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL Dave

Hello everyone. Beautiful picture's Kassy, love that big white mushroom too;-)

Dave, interesting history concerning your families origin's. I do remember my father saying the Falwell's originated from German descendant's and yes my immediate family has alway's lived in Va. I havea couple of aunt's/uncles that live in various other state's. So sorry to read you ripped a muscle...wishing you a speedy recovery there! That's got to hurt

Jim, thank's for the offer on the preserve's and hope you and your wife are doing well today.

Keaau, HI

Hi Rachel,

My Dad's side of the family originated from the Oberrhine (Rhine) area of Germany. They were extracted by King Edward VI in a deal by royals, and brought to Somerset, England around 1547. They were charged to make a "serge" cloth from wool for the King for their keep.

Over several years my ancestors (Paul) were infamous for being persecuted by justices under the authority of King Charles II, because they (as Quakers) refused to pay tithes, take an oath, or remove their hats while in court!
When King James II replaced Charles II, their persecution was relaxed. But King James II was a devout Catholic, and my Kin decided to team up with the Duke of Monmouth to overthrow James II in what is known as the Monmouth Rebellion.
Unfortunately they lost.
Justices then started to bring my Kin to court and told them they would be "set free" in they would confess their involvement with the Rebellion. Those who confessed were quickly hung!
This led to my family immigrating to America in 1685.

I a guess by birthright, I really am a Rebel!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Aha, so you admit you are a rebel.......grin, cool on the family history.

Hi Rachel. How goes it?

Kassy, complete details on the puff ball fry......including pictures, especially any of anyone turning blue or ROTF not laughing...grin

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

No puff ball fry :(

Interesting read Dave. So what are you not good at;-) You know about plants/rock's/history . Your an interesting person as a whole.

Hi Jean, doing well, hope you are too.

Kassy are you frying up some of those mushroom's? I love mushroom's raw/cooked.......anyway you fix them.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

I don't think you would want this one Rachel......
I should have gotten it maybe a few days earlier :(
Green just doesn't look good to eat :(

But I love mushrooms, so now that I know what they are, I will be keeping my eye out for them.

Sorry Kassy, know you were looking forward to it. Just remember to take pics of the next one.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Just wanted to show you these....they are tissue paper thin and disintegrate when you touch them

Keaau, HI

Do the caps of that turn to ink when they get old? Maybe a Coprinus.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Cute.
For some reason we end up with a number of mushrooms in this yard. Most of them are usually near and apple tree. I remember the puff balls being there twice so far. When I started seeing my BF, that was the first time I had ever seen that puff ball mushroom. He usually ends up with one or two a year.
And that one that I took the picture of, was growing right next to my flowerbed that the chickens dug for me ^_^

Dave, why do they not sell them in stores, other then the fact that they are huge.

How many bees?

Thumbnail by kassy_51
Keaau, HI

Maybe they have too short of a shelf life.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Well they have a short life in the yard too when you don't know what they are, and when you find out you don't get to it fast enough :(

I'll keep an eye out for the next one, and I know my BF will too as he knows I like mushrooms.

And I'll take pictures of it Jean. May have to wait until next year for that one.

Hey, we seem to have a lot of German's here.........LOL
My Dads parents came over from Germany, and so did my Mom's grandparents.

Dave, that's why you and I are Rebels!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I do not know Dave...more of the Australia stuff. I just thought they were pretty rain forest critters.

Kassy, My dad's family is German and Cherokee and my mom's is Scots-Irish and Iriquois ....

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Hey, I have a great chat buddy in Scotland.............Someone I would love to meet. I have talked to him for 8 years now on messenger!
Lately him and I haven't run into each other a lot on messenger :(

BF fixed the butterfly house. Yeah!!!
A nice new paint job too!

Thumbnail by kassy_51

Cute butterfly house Kassy;-)

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

The butterflies will be tickled....looks really nice.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks Rachel
Last year a woodpecker pecked a hole in it and sat in it.......made it easy pickings for him!
Bluebirds used it this summer as their home then.
And BF just fixed it in the last two weeks........woodpecker won't get into it again!!
BF Is the one who painted it. Now just so we can draw back some of my butterflys

Bi-colored butterfly bush..............yes, bi-colored.......the third color died out for some reason :(

Always thought my ancestors came from England on the Mayflower. John Goodman did, but died in the second year of colonization, unmarried. While playing on the computer came across a distant cousin who has done all the research on the family. First ancester in America was Johann Michael Guthmann. Came from Germany via Amsterdam. Fleeing religious persecution. He had two sons who the next record were calling themselves, Goodman. I assume the German gutteral pronunciation sounded like Goodman, so they just took that as there name. First settle in Pennsylvania but almost immediately migrated south. The bulk of them ended up in Georgia. A place called Goodman Crossroads. From there my Greatgrandfather and all his brothers (a whole pile of them) formed a wagon train and migrated west. My greatgrandfather dropped out of the train at a place called Pelahatchie, Miss. The rest migrated to East Texas.

(Zone 5b)

good morning all!
good lord...I just woke up, latest I've slept in forever...
Kassy I can't tell what that sign says, I'm on the laptop though. Be very sure of mushrooms before you eat them, I trust Dave knows what he's talking about.
Ancestry....mother's family came over on one of the original ships, stayed right along the East Coast. Father's family came over during Mussolini's reign, stayed right along the East coast :) I'm an east coast gal...English, Irish & Italian
the party yesterday was a blast.
need more coffee...

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Good morning Lynnie. So glad you had fun and a good night's sleep...grin

I am gonna have to do family research on my mom's side again. My older sister had all the documentation that my mom spent years gathering. When Franchesca died a few years ago, her daughter took "all those boxes of papers and pictures and other junk" to the dump in Cody Wyoming...."because it was cluttering up her garage".

(Zone 5b)

oh no! somebody on my mother's side traced our ancestry, it was very interesting stuff....they made copies of stuff & passed it out.
on my 3rd cup of coffee.....
