A man who knows what will be good for him and isn't afraid to go after it. I like it. Bet you swept her off her girlish feet, you Romeo. Girls like that kind of attention whether they admit it or not...that would have been right around 1961 or so, wouldn't it? I'll bet you were quite the Bogart.

Delhi, LA

Just bad. Sixty-one was when we got married. Been a long run. Think I'll keep her. Course in those days when you married you intended to stay married. You worked your problems out instead of walking out. Shoot, I always liked to pick fights with her because it was so darn much fun making up. What ya think?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I couldn't agree more. i always said I was only gonna get married once. I have a bit of a "been there, done that , have the T-shirt" outlook where marriage is concerned. It is a life long contract, so always felt it was meant to be taken seriously....the committment, not the day to day. If you get too serious over the daily stuff it turns everything else into a big deal.
When I was 13 years old I got some excellent advice from the lifeguard who pulled me out of 30 foot deep water...he said" Come one, take a breath, you're fine, all you have to do is breath and everything will be alright." that has been my mantra for the past 45 years....it works. There is nothing DHJim and I can't weather as long as we remember to breath.

Moon I think I have a crush on that lifeguard ;)
Don't worry, I would never withhold vaccines or anything!

Moon I think I have a crush on that lifeguard ;)
I must be drinking high test today, please excuse the ranting above lol

Well I just tried to post a picture of "the world's largest boulder" but it wouldn't download...I'll try again when I get back to high speed internet. I was unable to look under it for slugs.

Jim post a wedding photo! I love those black & white photos, so glamourous. i had some of mine "browned." Jim you were married before I was born.

Moon we're having a blast this week. Busy but fun. Canoeing today.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Good Morning Lynnie. Rave on, rave on. Sometimes we can surprise even ourselves by the depth of our feelings and it helps sometimes to put them out there. There is a long list of products(meds) out there that should never have hit the public. Thalidomide was one of the most tragic cases. As to the "herbal remedies" there is so much in the plant world that is beneficial, but abused and misused. A case in point, ephedra. A great plant with real benefits for allergy/sinus sufferers among other things, whose use is so restricted as to be almost unavailable...but we got pseudoephedrine to replace it and we all know where that went. Unregulated herbal remedies can be dangerous, but if the big drug companies can't make a huge profit, they aren't interested. Which leaves the door wide open to anyone with gel caps and an advertising budget. I need more coffee.....thankfully it is a regulated plant.GRIN

I am so glad you guys are having fun...remember to stay in the center of the canoe....and row, row, row your boat, cuz that lifeguard was in Tennessee and would be about 65 today.GRIN

A note on that. I was blown away when SIL Peter, told my grandson,Aidan, who was tired and crying and nearly hysterical over life's events as only a 3 y/o can be, "Take a breath, little mate. If you are breathing, you'll be fine."

No wonder my daughter married him.....GRIN

(I watched that lifeguard with all the ardor a 13 y/o girl can muster, for the rest of our stay.)

(Cathy), MO

Hi all. Yes it's been quite a week here. The network is back up but we still have network cards out in a few PC's and printers. It's been fun! (NOT) :-)

Looks like a couple of new people popped in this week. Welcome! This is a friendly thread and Grandpa Jim is totally nuts! That's part of what makes it so much fun!! :-)

Have a super day everyone

(Zone 5b)

Moon i got chills reading what your SIL said...is that a coincidence or a message?
Cat do you subscribe? we may have to move soon.
canoeing was fun but I left lunch in the fridge & packed 3 wheat rolls into the cooler instead by accident...grabbed the wrong bag...guess who goes without when there isn't enough lol makes up for all that fudge & malted milk balls.
I imagine Jim is laid up in the house eating motrin right now after working on that tree...

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Lynnie, I hope that is all that is wrong with him. It is oppressively hot here today. Mid nineties humid and nearly cloudless. He is just re-couping from the illness he had last week.....has had heart surgery and back trouble. Not to mention that he is decidedly dedicated and stubborn as his pappy's grey mule.....Grin

I believe that it is a message....perhaps one that defines a certain personal awareness/philosophy on life and one's place in it. my daughter is much the same. The only time you see her become upset, distraught or worried is over the well being of the boys. The rest of the time she says what good to worry,,,it won't change anything but my general well being and I can change that without worry.....and then she laughs....a clear happy joyous sound.

sorry about lunch....grin

(Zone 5b)

I made it up at dinner lol my husband would happily have given me the roll but he was paddling harder than I was, so I told him I was fine. Thank goodness I made eggs for breakfast.
yup, Jim is stubborn, hopefully Jo is laying down the law over there. Rattling that chain at him ;) If he's doing hospital visits that will keep him cool & safe.
How long has your daughter been in Australia? I don't think I'd go that far from my family, although I'm tempted sometimes! lol

This message was edited Aug 16, 2009 6:20 AM

Cat, don't tell me your working on a Saturday ? Computer's have a mind of their own at time's don't they;-)

Lynnie, you kayak? I alway's thought kayaking would be an interesting adventure .

Jean, I enjoyed your writting's concerning commercial herb's but I have to ask you a question, are the bottled herb's that one can buy at most local store's such as Wally-world......not regulated? If not, then how in the heck have they been able to carry them for sale for so long;-)

Rachel

(Zone 5b)

Hi Rachel! No, I was canoeing, I'm leery of any apparatus that has a possibility of interfering with the ability to breathe on my own. I don't think I'd like not being able to abandon ship from a kayak. lol
No, herbs are not regulated by the FDA. Buyer beware!
Rachel the mint thread has been shut down, dave started a new thread on beginner gardening called luping's basil...we're trying to decide which forum to go to...pop in there & see what you think. Or was it luping's mint? Sheesh. Too much sun today.
Cat you'll come too, right? Hope your computer glitches are fixed now!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Lynnie, Jan has been in Australia since 2003. She went over for 3 months in 2001, planned to stay, but her employer requested she come home for a year to take over the company for him so he could do more program writing. She came back in October, and Peter, though not yet married followed her back here so he could let us get to know him before he spirited her away again. It was 6 years in March . They won a wedding in paradise from Australia Brides magazine that Jan entered Peter in....never expected anything, thought they might win one of the 25 weekend getaways. They were married in the Cook Islands in Sept of 2004. Four beautiful days in an island garden of sorts. Only problem, no accommodations available and totally unable to make connecting flights...My only daughter was escorted to the altar by 6 huge tribal dressed islanders....

Rachel, i believe that there is some consistency in formulation of products by reputable distributors, especially those based in the US, but there are so many more available through advertising on radio, television and print media and yes the internet, that are not under any quality control or product regulation. It is strictly a matter of caveat emptor...buyer beware. Know whose product you are ingesting to ensure your own safety and well being.

If the big chain store's such as Wal-mart are not under some type of regulation for bottled herb's......where are the law-suit's? They have been carrying most for year's!

Rachel

Edit to add; Kava may have been removed from the shelve's year's ago but in all reality that's the only herb I can re-call in my memory bank's;-)

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Rachel, I believe that the herbal products Wal-mart, etc sell are manufactured in the US. The regulations would be more a matter of following safe guidelines for production and distribution. But, Lynnie is correct. The Food and Drug administration issues guidelines, but does not regulate the companies to ensure they follow those guidelines. As long as the sale of herbal remedies and supplements is legal, those places that sell them are not really subject to ensure the total safety of those products or their quality. that is the definition of Caveat emptor....buyer beware....the product is not a drug, has not been prescribed and you are not forced to purchase it at the inclination of another party....free will, Dear.
It just means that you should know who is manufacturing them and what is in them.
You can look on line for guidelines on dosages, usage and dangers. Then you take your information and see how the product translates that info. An example would be FEN-FEN. It was sold all over the country and thousands of people used it...right up until some folks started dying from it. Then it was pulled from the market, in most instances by the stores. It is not considered a safe product, therefore Wal-Mart doesn't carry it. Capeche? grin

You really do care don't ya Jean;-) Hopefully most folk's will not go out of their way to purchase from un-reputable place's but goodness know's there is so much "spam" via the net!

Hug's

(Zone 5b)

Moon that is very cool about your daughter's wedding, but..you weren't there??

Yes, I do Rachel. My mother was very staunch about being your brother's keeper. But mostly, I just don't like rude, ugly or dishonest and especially not if someone is going to get hurt by those practices.

Hugs right back to ya...grin (nice little tree rat in that picture grin) They uproot my orchids and nibble on the roots and leaves, so unless they are playing somewhere other than my yard, I consider them pesky little rascals.

That pesky lil rascal is not the usual squirrel we find here;-) He/She just nibble's on some apple's and disappear's. That squirrel is on the border of being an Albino.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

No, Lynnie we were not able to get reservations or a flight connection and the dates were non-negotiable. The way the "prize" was set-up also meant that even if we had been able to attend, we would have arrived Thursday night, the wedding was Friday morning and then shortly after, Jan and Peter were whisked away to a small honeymoon island....no guests. Because of the weird travel schedule, we would have flown from New Orleans to Las Vegas to Los Angeles to Hawai'i to New Zealand and finally the Cook Islands and repeated going home. There were overnight layovers in Hawai'i and New Zealand and involved 4 airlines. Flying coach the entire way plus overnight accommodations in Hawai'i, New Zealand and the Cook Islands started adding up to a considerable amount of money....sell the house, we are going...grin. The final cost per person (three of us) was just shy of $9000 unless of course you planned on eating or having anything to drink for nearly a week......We gave them a check toward the downpayment on their home and I stayed home and cried....quietly of course....grin

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

When i was a little tyke, the squirrels outside our home in Illinois were a dark near black with longish hair, or the bright red Fox squirrels....the little gray cat squirrels here just can't compare. The little booger looks awfully healthy too...grin

(Zone 5b)

aaaw Moon that's awful! Heartbreaking! Do moms ever get over that?
I'm sure the adorable grandkids help, but still.....
I'm debating whether or not to admit I thought you guys were talking about some critter indigenous to the south when you said tree rat...hahaha didn't realize it was a squirrel till you said it. Sun stroke for sure.

(Zone 5b)

we have black squirrels.
ok all, i'm off to bed! see you guys in the morning!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

We survive, Lynnie. We are mothers. Started a post in Welcome Home...You will all recognize which one.

Nite, Lynnie....not far from there myself...sweet sleep

on my way!

Delhi, LA

No pictures of our wedding gang. One reason I am determined to have a full church wedding on our 50th.

Cat squirrels are the best eating of the family. Also the hardest for me to hunt in my bygone hunting days. Way to smart for me.

I guess we'll soon be going the way of the mint thread. If so it has been a blast.

I have always been a nut Cat. I can usually find the humor in any situation. Blessing or Curse?

Been on the run all day. Preached for a friend of mine today. Enjoyed it. Good bunch of people. Even let me bring my guitar and sing.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Know it was a really good day for you Jim....any time you can make a joyful noise and lift up your voice and sing has got to be a good day. Got a little worried you worked too hard on the pine trees...grin

Delhi, LA

To be honest, I've had so much other stuff to do I haven't even started on it. I've been helping Jo put up salsa and jelly. She has artheritis in her hands so bad she can hardly tighten the jar lids. Some of those canners are really heavy, too. She wanted some muskedines so we went and picked 5 gal. Then she wanted pears so anothe trip and 10 gal. I hope the kids enjoy all this stuff she's putting up. Can't complain, she has always loved doing this but couldn't because of the pastorial job. She sacrificed a lot of things she liked to always be by my side. So, now we have a more time of our own, I want her to do what she likes.

Did you see that photo of Rachael on the other thread? She's a knock out. Made me feel old to know I've been talking to a bunch of children.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Come on Jim. You know you are only as old as you feel, and physically don't count. Otherwise I'd think I was Methuselah's sister some days. grin Rachel is a lovey woman and kind. And knows a thing or two about plants. Grin

There is nothing wrong with being venerable and young at heart.

So sorry Jo's arthritis is bothering her. Got a touch in both hands and knees, I know how wicked it can be.

(Zone 5b)

Jim they let you bring your guitar and sing? Must have been a short service.

(Cathy), MO

Good morning all. Crazy morning here again but it's starting to at least slow down a little. I'm still waiting for parts for many of the PC's, but we are about half up!

Jim, I totally agree. Life is too short to not enjoy it! :-) We have to find humor in it sometimes or we will loose what marbles we have! LOL

Hayward (Z8b-9a), CA(Zone 8b)

Hey you guys^_^! Apologies for being 'incommunicado' for a few days... our interweb at home wasn't installed really well so they had to schedule a tech a couple of times ("yeah, he'll be there at your house BETWEEN 12 noon and 4 PM" or "yes ma'am, he should be there BETWEEN 8 am and 12 noon"! )...

You should take it easy there, gramps!

Btw, no more peaches! :-) No more pesky gnats too! Woo hoo!

Oh and we have a new addition to our dogkins... A teeny tiny wittle terrier shihtzu(?) with big dumbo ears and the attitude of a seventy pound dog (she's about, oh i'd say, a pound or two)... The semi-puppy dog just loves her! thinks she's a chew toy!(kidding!) and our old lady ridgeback just "tolerates" her (actually, she could care less, just don't let the little one disturb her "quiet time" (which everytime)) :-)

Delhi, LA

Morning gang, taking a break. Boy is it hot and humid. Glad everyone had a good week end. Our rural churchs are pretty informal. Most like singing and playing music. Had a man and two ladies that brought there fiddles and played three or four. Had a great time.

Good to see Chezca is up and running. Aggravating how those guys do you. They sure like there pay on time.

Got to go check you later.

Thank you all for the compliment's;-) Jim, I am all kid at heart too.

Jim, your lovely wife sure does love to can but sorry to read that she has arthritis to deal with. Bless her heart! Sound's like nice church's you two attend with good people

Cat, hope you get thing's worked out soon at work.

chezca, good to see you.

Chezca, I'll bet you pup is cute as can be. Afraid my springer spaniel would step on anything that tiny....grin

Let's hear for no more gnats.

Yep, I bet Chezca"s new toy is a cutey. Picture's chezca?

Picture's moon of your Springer too? I never had good luck with dog's when I was a kid so I stuck with cat's.

Hi everyone. I guess all have gone looking at the time on the last post. Been a busy day for me. Trying to get those trees moved without hurting the old back. The guys from the electric company did a good job of sawing it up in small moveable blocks. Only ran into a couple so far that I was afraid to fool with. My son will probably be by this week end and he'll move them for me. Anything under 400 #'s and he'll walk off with it.

I like folks that aren't afraid to just have fun. Seems to me like all you girls are kids at heart. Now if I can just get Lynnie, Chezca and Moon to post a pin-up my collection will be complete.

Can't believe all the grain trucks on the road. Corn harvest is in full blast. Hope the storms off shore will dodge us until they can get their crops in.

Stink bugs moved in on me after they harvested the corn behind my house. Nothing but a few cukes left and okra. Got some collards, squash, radishs, rutabagas started so I guess I have a fight on my hands.

Jo never lets artheritis slow her down. She says if you give in to it, it will rule you. Her hands give her trouble tightening the jar lids. Just not enough strenth there any more. She just hasn't had the opportunity to can much the last 30 years. Where I am she is. We have had a successful ministry over the years and she is the key ingredient. Because she is with me I can go anywhere. We have always done a lot of community visits and so many I wouldn't be able to make without her.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I have pictures of Chester on the other computer. Next time I log on, I'll try to remember to use that one. I did post a pic of him on Luping's original basil thread.

I am so glad you realize the treasure you have Jim....and Joanne didn't do badly herself. GRIN

(Zone 5b)

glad you're taking your time with those trees, Jim! We have thunderstorms coming in, should break the humidity.
where has JJ been, I went to the gym & did every other rep for her like I said, I wonder if she's feeling it lol

(Cathy), MO

Good morning all! It's overcast here and we are expecting a big storm in this evening. Cooler temsp too. I don't think we are supposed to get out of the 80's all week. Strange weather for Aug! But I'm not complaining. Loving it!! :-)

We are expecting some parts in today so hopefully can get more PC's back up and going. It's been a crazy week. Makes a person appreciate the quiet times more.

I agree, pictures please Chez!!!
