Sarasota, FL

always starting new projects to fight boredom

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

That's gorgeous GW.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I have always wanted to do hand beading. That is beautiful.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Beautiful and I love the color(s) perfect to give focus to the texture.

Yes I remember the spoolies - I'd forgotten all about them!!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I think the Vermont Country Store still carries spoolies.

Eugene, OR

You can find a lot of older things in that catalog. They even have some of the old candy we used to get at the local drug store. It costs more now though. LOL

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Nice beadwork GW

Sarasota, FL

thant missi, mamasita, ge1836 and venu

I think that site with the old candy still has whip'n'chill, too
very expensive--I used to love that stuff!!

Eugene, OR

I only keep getting the catalog because I buy pool shoes from them every now and then. I do water aerobics and the bottom of the pool is slippery.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Are those old products still manufactured?
OR do they actually have a shelf life of thirty years?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

That could be a scary thought when it comes to the candy.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ever wonder how foods last so long?
And the causes of health problems seems to coincide with the introduction of manipulated additives to food?
There was a phychologist professor here who testified in front of a senate sub commitee on the red dye #2 additive in foods and his research found it lead to behavior problems in children.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I can't remember where I read it, (maybe here on DG ) but I recently read something about how you shouldn't use cake mixes, etc. after their expiration date. Something about the yeast going bad and the potential for making you really sick.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

From what I understand, the "old" products are newly manufactured. In most cases, the original manufacturer no longer makes it, but another company has license to do do so.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Does anyone else remember an article by Erma Bombeck on red dye #2 when she wondered how the scientists got the red lipstick containing the purported cancer causing agent, in the form of lipstick, on the mice? She was so funny.

On blue food she wrote: "There is no known navy blue food. If there is navy blue food in the refrigerator, it signifies death."

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

There is no yeast in cake.
The ingredient that makes a cake rise is baking soda, harmless.
Thanks Mammasita for clearing up the old products question.
That sounds right on and thank heaven those companies are still producing our favorites.
Blue food?
How about Sagablue Cheese. I wouldny pass that up.
Irma was a kick wasnt she?

Eugene, OR

I read that article about the cake mix too. Someone did become ill. I seem to remember it was the flour that had gone bad. It must have been really old.

And you're right mamasita....new manufacturers. It explained that once in the catalog.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Sometimes they must license more than one company to carry on their tradition. I recently tasted two different Bit-o-Honey bars, made by two different companies. One tasted exactly like the original, the other was nothing like the original, but they both had the same wrapper and the trademark name.

Eugene, OR

Strange, you'd think they would have the same recipe. Did it taste as good as you remember it?

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, the one that tasted like the original was great.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I used to love Bit-o-Honey, dont they also have those candy coated licorices in pink and white and black?
I cant recall the name.
I also loved Milk Duds.
The candy names were so beniegn in those days, nothing like the violent names on candy and drinks.Kamoom and slash. The stuff doesnt make you stronger just a temporary sugar rush that leaves you fatter.
What-a-world

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

As a little kid I used to buy malted milk balls at two for a penny. About two weeks ago I saw how they sell them now - in a quart container! No wonder America is super sized!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Speaking of super-sized: have any of you seen that movie called, "Super Size Me"? The guy spent a month (I believe) eating nothing but MacDonald's food. He was being monitored by his doctor during the time and the results were interesting. Remember, he took this to the extreme, and had every only this stuff for his meals.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

That was a great eye opening film, amazing what it did to his health in just a relative short time.

Sarasota, FL

I loved Erma Bombeck--so funny
here bit on one size fits all girdles was hysterical, still have some of her books somewhere
liked Totie Fields, too

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Let's start a new thread, this one is long.

I remember her column on four word sentences. "One size fits all" and "You can't miss it" were two of them. Loved her serious columns as well and I did save many of them.
