Well, not all were exactly cute!

This one I liked

This was such a fun garden, lots of plantings but the owners had so many fun surprises tucked in here and there, they sure had a sense of humor.

Or in the case of their compost pile, maybe that should be 'sense of humus'. ^_^

Even a memorial urn!

Even the blooms were touched by their humor!

The following day we went to some open gardens, this was a professional landscapers garden.

Great tours, great photos and so many good ideas. Thanks, Sue.

I'm having fun looking through these again.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous pics, and some very unique ones, too. I love the smiley on the daylily.

And yes, Pirl, I did belive you. I'm still not sure.

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

I love this thread ...such a great thread for winter entertainment and inspiration.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Your Mom reminds me of Pam Harper, Sue. I think I like her already.

Ha, yes, Pam Harper has the same European look!

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Sue's mother is a DG member. Is she reading these threads, Sue?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I don't think so, she's been really busy the last few days. Barely has time to peek at the Rose and Daylily Forum she said.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Well come talk to us Sues Mom!

I saw Pam Harper in person at the Rochester Flower show. She gave a speech on the book Time Tested Plants. She is lovely, personable, and has the tiniest waist I've seen in ages. She is very English, although seeming more laid back. She has a great sense of humor, and is totally engaging. She is a wonderful speaker, holding the audience captive. She and my husband really hit it off. I truly admire her. She has made knowing plants her life's work, and done well at it. She is very energetic. The year we saw her in May 2007 she was 77.

Chimney flues are a great way to plant bulbs and keep them safe in case you have gophers, especially if you put a round piece of window screening material at the bottom.

The garden with the memorial urn is particularly intriguing. A good sense of humor without being tacky.

I love wheelbarrows full of plants. I can hardly wait until mine rusts enough to make some drainage holes.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

It was my favorite garden, not only was it packed with plants but at every turn, there was some fun garden touches, either sweet like the frolicking girl, or some whimsical touch but not overdone, like you said, tacky. To me, the plants and garden still stood out, not the decor or knick knacks. Here was a little shed/house on the side of the house, not sure if it was for tools or grand kids. It was cute, not overdone.

Here are the owners, he was especially funny and I suspect he was the one behind all the humorous touches. The house was an old historic one in a beautiful large tree lined street. Just a lovely setting. You don't see neighborhoods like this in Calif.

Ok, hit send too soon.

Oh, I wanted to post this, it was another garden. All white by the shaded front door, very soothing.

It's a wonderful garden. I love the tools hanging on the shed and leaning against it. They're so bright and decorative.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Sue!!!!!!
Ref metal with stones, someone really needs to loose the superglue.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Love the kiddies shed - so decorative.

The white flowering plant behind the owners is lovely. Does anyone know what it is? The couple look very relaxed and I think I spot a glass in his left hand. It helps to have a drink at the end of a garden tour!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Do you mean the white=appearing plant near that angle of the bay window? I was womdering what it might be. too. I think it looks white because of the way the light is hitting it.

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

The tree looks like a variegated dogwood. The photo below is one I took in someones garden. I thought it a lovely tree too.

Yep, if I remember right, it was a beautiful variegated dogwood, Cornus controversa because we stood with the owners talking about it. It has these beautiful horizontal branches.
Actually, I also talked about buying their house! But I didn't want it with their weather! LOL

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Love that last picture Sue.

Those variegated dogwood are very showy.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

dogwoods...ANOTHER plant that won't grow here !

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Do you have avocados? I would die for an avocado tree. It's a two way street.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I don't personally have one, but many people around here do. They're not "decorative" trees by any means, and they drop leaves constantly. Considering the price of avocado's, even here, it's no wonder people grow them.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

It's shocking, isn't it? The days of a dozen avocados for a dollar are definitely over.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

There's a ginormous avocado tree which hangs over the roof of a bldg. at the end of the alley behind where I live. When it has fruit on it, people stand on top of their cars to pick them, and do everything humanly possible to get to them...before the raccoons do.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Avocados are about as close to divine as chocolate is. Stuffed with shrimp or lobster they're even better, if possible.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I like omelettes with a crab, avocado, and sour cream filling.
