Best/ Worse/ ? did you learn today #81visit with friends...

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

I just read on another thread. Shar is staying with someone that has heat. Most heat and electric is out.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Oh that is great! Thanks Vicki..
I saw that she had posted on Jan 27th in the evening, on another thread..

I'm just in from shovelling snow again..my friend is picking me up and we are going swimming..

Betty your quilts are lovely..nice to be able to give a different look to your bedroom just by changing the quilt.

Cheers,
Carol

Victoria Harbour, ON

Vicki, special thanks re Shar..must be major destruction for hydro not to be on for a few weeks..much damage will be done and of course everything in freezer will be spoilt..hope there is not much damage to her house and property...regardless, all that can be replaced but not our Shar...

Nice day for swimming Carol, it's lightly snowing here in Barrie but I understand that at home we're getting a downfall once again..more shovelling/snowblowing tonight..will it ever end???

Liz do you mean you contemplated moving closer to Canadian border west coat way north of you or Canadian border my way..lol..

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

That is indeed hot weather! Was in Spain (Toledo) in 2000 and it got up to 114--absolutely could not breath!! Not for me that is sure.

Love the quilts Betty.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Marion, it must get pretty hot in your neck of the woods?

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh no Betty, that 114 was in Spain. It doesn't get that hot here.

Victoria Harbour, ON

BUT Marion, you are in Florida, how does it not get that hot???? lol

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

It might get into the low 100's but not always. Lots of upper 90's.

Victoria Harbour, ON

HMmMmm isn't that interesting, not sure why I thought it was so much hotter, perhaps the humidity...remember a couple of years ago I painted my mom's Florida room while in Clearwater to look like rocks, wanted to give it the finishing coats before leaving for home, there was so much humidity that virtually on the cement it seemed I had 1/4" of water...maybe that's what makes it feel so hot...

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Yeap, you have that one right!

Glenview, IL

OH, oh...very strange!

I just made a longish post, I have no idea where!!
LOL, thought it was here...The list says I posted...
Somewhere some is scratching there head going huh??
thats what I am doing..huh where did it go?

Starving..Waving hello, going to eat check it out later, I guess.

so weird!
But I am glad Ves, Saw Shar post...Good to know she is safe.
Thank you Ves.

Glenview, IL

LOL, Found it...

OMG How Awful for thos in the area.

Thanks Ves for news on Our Shar. I am so glad she is somewhere safe.

Bizzar how all that just happened. Yeoowww!

Liz, Well, took a little bit of guilt tripping!! LOL, You know,it's not like I am going off to California all by myself, So i said Hey you are more then welcome to come meet and visit all the Ladies too...
hehehe...Plus, I am paying for this trip myself too. Using my ciggie money!! He still isn't too keen on my not being with the family for the "holiday" but he finally gets the importance of meeting everyone. Plus I am giving him plenty of warning.

Betty, Wow, those are wonderful quilts! Nice Bargain too.

Well, I have been running errands this AM...so Now I am going to watch a movie I taped while maybe sewing a little something. Got to start practicing instead of just keep talking abput it...hahaha.

I hope that you are all SAFE, cozy and warm.

Waving Hello, Carol, Hope your swim was good!

Oh my gosh, whew just sweating hearing about your Heat Wonder, a tiny jealous about it too, since I am freezing, lol.

Crissy, wow thats a neat story about the guy at walmarts with same name and spelling...I hope you are able to give him that hug and story next time.

OK starving now too..so off to eat my baked.
Betty, Hope you get to finish your ragquilt bag, pretty, flannels!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Judy, you didn't tell us how Steve liked the homemade soup??? did you end up making rolls...

Shaking my head here, wouldn't you know it's Friday, hacking and running a fever...Paul dropped in for a few minutes and he was doing same..both of us saying how sick and tired we are of being sick...it sure is blowing and snowing out there..another 55 minutes and I'm heading north...called Darlene and she said it was really bad, snowblowed 3 times already today so can imagine what my yard looks like, whatever it is, it will have to wait...who knows, if Kyle has no plans I'm sure he'll drop by and do it for grandma...

Few things to do so thought I'd pick them up, groceries to make soup so I won't have to go out once I'm home and it will take but secs to get into those flannel jammies...lol

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Betty, Wayne is here, now, cleaning up. He said it's the first time since Wed. that he's been completely warm! We put lome clothes in the dryer for him at the laundro mat across the street. They don'y know how long it'll be, up to a month before they get power back. I think they've been declared a National disaster area. Curfew and all! Heavy snow expected Sun. or Mon. After the worst icestorm in memory!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Now how scarry is that Audrey..thank goodness he's with you and safe..Audrey, I used to every morning before DH got dressed before going to work I'd put all his clothing of the day in the dryer so when he dressed he'd be toasty comfy..talk about spoilt..

Glenview, IL

Oh goodness Audrey.

I am glad that Wayne is with you and getting warm.
Prayers are in definate order for that whole area.

Oh Betty, fortgot all about Chicken soup. LOL. No never made the buscuits because I ended up adding noodle instead.
I need to get some butter milk to try the buscuits! But my soup need a bit of chicken broth added. and a little bit of salt.
LOL, Never think about salt so it was fine with me.
Thanks for asking!!

OK back to my material...OMG it takes a bit of practice to use that rotary cutter. But how exciting to cut more than one piece at a time!!
I cut six layers, how incredibly cool is that!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, he has to be at home at night. The dogs can navigate in the dark! He says they try to go through walls! He has a doggy door, but they can't find it at night in the dark! I tried to get him to stay, but he'll be back tomorrow. Someone's bringing him some more propane tanks for his stove. They each last about 12 hrs, so he can stay fairly warm, at least not completely frozen!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Betty-my dear-I love you, but you need to take the proper time to get better-you feel ill and take a day, maybe 2, but a lot of times you need to take more than that and maybe take a day off work and stay in bed-you will need to do that if you ever want to get better....

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

am i in the right thread????

i think im lost....

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Laura dear, you are in the right place....we are all just bit worried that Betty continues to go to work and run all kind of errands in the freezing cold when she hasn't been feeling well and we are all standing with hands on hips and shaking fingers at her to to take time off and get well...we do not want her to end up in hospital !! Then we would all be quite lost...

And then we have several who are caught up in severe Ice Storms ......definitely not a problem you are having right now is it sweetie??? Many are without electricity...no way to heat, cook or get water....not a good situation. I will keep my 30's, 40's and rain, thank you....we are getting a bit of wind tonight and the dog is definitely not happy with that....

Hope you are staying cool down under.....can't imagine heat like you have....

Baton Rouge, LA

Hello All;
Can't hardly imagine heat at that level (downunder). The hottest temp I remember is 120 in Sacramento Calif. as a child (circa 1970?) (which had NO humidity compared to BatonRouge, LA or Florida). I do remember that time, they ran water from the fire hydrants so we kids could cool off a bit. Betty: Where Marion and I are ...it will frequently get in the upper 90's but the humidity is what makes it feel hotter... My Grandma near Gainesville, FL had a greenhouse and would tell me the story of her friends that couldn't understand why she would have a greenhouse living in Florida of all places...we will get around 6-10 "freezes" in the winter which can hurt our tender plants. But as you all know....I am a beginner in gardening....so don't think I know all I am talking about..... :) This is the FIRST year I am really paying attention to the Freezes....which I asked DH....."It seems as though it's 10 times worse than past years" and he assures me it's not. It's just that I have my wonderful plants out there...the tropicals that I was hoping would make it through ...and they probably won't. But I guess I'll just get more this year. Love to all - Mary in Baton Rouge

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Mary, weather everywhere seems worse to me than it has in past years......... hope your plants make it through this weird winter we are all having!!

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

Just a quick post before I head off to bed. I have 9 girls in my basement giggling and watching a movie. I just finished taking our swing down so they wouldn't be on it all night long. They're watching the movie "How to Eat Fried Worms". Sonora wanted a worm theme for her birthday party this year so that movie seemed to fit. She would have liked to give them each some of our red wriggler worms so they could each start a worm composting bin but I let her know that their parents might not really appreciate that. She made a really cool worm pinata though. She also helped decorate her cake and we made it like a big piece of lawn - chocolate (dirt) around the sides and green (grass) on top with flowers on top and gummy worms on the sides.

Tomorrow we're having pancakes and waffles for breakfast then going skating at noon. I can hardly wait till tomorrow afternoon. We were originally going to do the party next weekend but there's a big hockey tournament on and almost half of the people invited to the party are also on the hockey team. On Tuesday, when I found out about the conflict, we decided to bump the party up so it's been a little more stressful than originally planned. At least they're at the age when they can provide their own entertainment more. They've had so much fun dressing up in our dress-up clothes. I also put a lot of craft things out for them to use - mostly things that I don't have a use for myself but can't bear to throw out. One girl made a really cool doll house. I'll have to take a picture.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now. They may be able to stay up all night but I need my beauty sleep.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Gillian sounds like they are having a wonderful time. I guess I need to find that movie for Sage...this sound like a party she would love.....and I know she and Laura would love to have some of your Red Wrigglers as a party favor......worm composting is something thay have been interested in!

Know that we can't let anything conflict with Hockey.....my two nephew's in New York are fantastic Hockey and LaCrosse players....the family's whole life has revolved around hockey schedules!!!

9 girls.....oh my, I am sure you deserve a good rest at this point!!!
Have a good sleep.....

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

omg! I am sooo far behind on the threads! dont ever stay away from DG for a few days! too hard to catch up!

I did see the post on Jesse, thank you so much for the update! I will try to call her this weekend, hopefully she has a plan where she gets free nights and weekend minutes :) She is ALWAYS in my prayers, but will pray more often for her :) I knew she must have hit a rough spot. Hoping she finally received my christmas box with all the donated goodies from the wonderful folks here at DG.

Betty, so glad that you are feeling better, but please take it easy! and yes, I did have my cell phone with me, so took a pix of Keiths new muscles with the cell, now just gotta figure out how to get photos off the cell phone and onto my puter! guess I need to have my DD come do it for me! LOL! too high tech for me :o)

Best learned today..... I bought an ipod and learned how to download podcasts!! (it took me almost all night to figure it all out! grrr!) I just wanted to download the meditations and guided imagery to help me sleep at night and reduce stress.

Worst today..... well, nothing really! I sometimes think my life is downhill, but then hear about people like Jesse and my son and realize that I really have absolutely nothing to complain about. My life is 'enough' ^_^

I get to spend tomorrow making a patio in front of my gym (where Keith will be staying once he gets home) we broke up some cement in the front yard to make a new flower bed, and are using the broken cement pieces to make a patio area for him. Will grow some blue star creeper between the stones once they are all laid out.

hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow.... I'll try to catch up tomorrow night once the work party goes home.

{{hugs to all}}

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning all...

Fought a blizzard coming home yesterday aft. had thought about shopping so I'd need not go out today but when you can't see 2" in front of you, it's make it home safely and forget about the rest..

Saw my plowman up the street as I was driving in, said he'd be at the house a few minutes so was going to sit in my car on main road so he could do entire drive, lo and behold Cathy was doing the walkways and had done with a shovel in hand (I've a long/long drive) the entire driveway..invited her in for coffee...as soon as she left it was bath and bedtime...can't get rid of this cold..called Sharon to cancel our brunch today ...so funny between her trying to talk and gagging and my doing same we decided to talk at some point over the weekend on msn...not use real people voices..lol

Now up early, making a list of things I need..my weekly stop at the Canadian Tire franchise for a few things, some grocieries, another stop at Fabricland for curtain material, post office and I'll set for the weekend...

AnnMarie won't Keith be on a high to see the work you are doing on his behalf..a patio no less!!! Another flower bed for you..want to be there with you gardening..I once purchased a tape for sleeping and relaxation, kind of hypnosis, worked wonderfully...should go in search of it, doubt I'd ever find it..left so many things behind...relaxation is what is needed AnnMarie for you and an ipod filled with soft music will certainly help calm you...

Gillian, I sure hope your children remember just how wonderful a mother you are when they grow up...memories of worm farms, kiddie parties and the likes...I just hear 9 little ones laughing away..nice sounds..recently at Greg's 40th some of his and Jeff's friends were at the party, all remembering the goodtimes they had at our home..I asked about Rob's parents, one said they never went there because they never felt welcome...must have done so at our home, they were always there..but what fun I had and how they all made me feel special..same will be with you and the children's friends..you always go well above the norm..

Trisha and Mary, do hope your gardens aren't hit by cold weather..I never understood how spraying them with water helps..I would have imagined that they'd freeze so much quicker with the water...have to investigate why it helps....??...

Hope all of you going through this ice storm are warm and comfy..safe... have seen photo's on the newscast..how dreaful..

Best go have my bath/coffee do my hair and wait for stores to open...lol...

Talk later

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Morning all,

Gillian..so nice to hear about a birthday party given at home..so many people are so busy these days that birthday parties away from home seem to be the norm these days.
My grandaughter is going to an Oshawa Generals hockey game next week for one of her friends birthday parties.

Betty..hope you are feeling better today..you must be if you are venturing out to go shopping.
Sheila and I went grocery shopping after swimming yesterday so I'm all set for the weekend.
Tomorrow is supposed to be above freezing so I expect some a lot of melting.

Bye for now

These are called Toronto tulips..from last spring..I'm dreaming...........LOL

Jude here is a recipe to substitute Butter Milk. I use it all the time.

1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar add enough milk to make 1 cup. Let sit 5 minute. or 1 cup plain yogurt.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks Vicki, that's nice to know, who these days has buttermilk in the house...my great grandmother who stayed with us when I was a bit of a girl, probably 6 or so loved buttermilk..then the creamery was at the top of the Penetanguishene main street, we'd walk Friday mornings, probably about 1 1/2 miles all up hill... so she could have her logger beer, (?) yuk it looked awful, just the smell threw me off, probably why I've never even tasted a beer, not likely to at my age...then she'd have her glass of buttermilk and think she had the world in her hand...I wasn't impressed with either..I'd have a dish of ice cream... easy part of the morning, all downhill to go home...lol...that brought memories back Vicki, thanks...

Carol, love the tulips, where did you get them from bulbs or from the nursery we visited...come spring I'm hoping you'll invite me back so I can pick up a few different plants from your nursery...hope the ones we purchased in the fall will make it through this cold winter...

I am doing better Carol, didn't really want to go to town but had 2 swaps and a 'hello' gift to send off..OMG I made Canada post smile for the revenues I'm sure..lol so while out, did my thing...now it's enjoy/sit/I'm sure work on something for the rest of the weekend...

Got everything I need to make bread, a pot full of chicken soup and also I'll take out my crockpot and put a stew on..it's sooo cold out there that comfort food is what's needed...

Picked up that curtain material that I want to do some type of window dressing with, bought all they had but am sure it will be nick and tuck..even bought the curtain rods so who knows how much I'll get done..ONLY after the quilt though..

Mom called me this morning, didn't talk to her since Monday, wanted to know if I was mad at her for any reason, 'not that I know' lol so she wants to go over to Buffalo for the weekend, told her it's a go providing of course I'm well! She's antsy as well, has mega plans of things she wants to shop for .. me I'll be looking for Joanne's Fabrics...lol

Talk after...

Glenview, IL

Hi Good morning!!

Thank you Vicky!! wow, maybe I'll give my biscuits a whirl this afternoon.

what have you been up to?? Has it slowed down for you a bit now the holiday are done?
LOL, I actually asked about a job yesterday, was highly relieved when she said they had a hiring freeze!
heheh, just have to be honost to say I'm looking.
So how my pup Ty doing these days? Getting anxious to go out? I am and today might just go for a nice long walk. it 31 degrees!
I am so excited about that.

OK for all you very crafty quilters, Tadah, quit looking at material and started cutting.
I ended up changing mind and had to go get more material...So with that I "dragged" Breenie to store, hahah, she has to help me coordinate colors. I got to tell you, this is definately something i am really going to enjoy doing.
LOL even if it just the cutting part. I am just diggin this rotary cutter. Now I am thinking with hands on the hips here...how come no one has ever told me of this fun little tool before???
So a funny thing, Got this book for Christmas and a few little pieces of material, cutters mat, and little things like that right. So I have read the magazines twice over, dreaming about what to make...Decided on one piece. Ok so Breenie says, this is the longest weekend ever.
Huh, what are ya talking about, I ask...ROFLOL she says mom, you been working on this weekend project for a month! LOL, I didn't tell her this about the tenth weekend project I have been thinking about making. Weellll, in my defense one has to see all the details before it become a reality. Then of course there is the changing of the mind and the addition of items and change of plans due to slight mishaps.
LOL, it could be another year or two before this weekend is finished. Hahah, what can I say THIS weekend just got started.

Hi Wonderfhug!! Yes you are in the right Thread. Saw you were in a heatwave out there. Sorry thought i commented but guess, I didn't.
So you doing ok? Did you decide to start on a craft?

LOL, I got another funny Story...Told my sister Gypsy about the possiblilty of Cedrick and Bailey being here for Bahamama party. LOL, she doesn't quite get the whole idea of their travels...said she had to let me go so she can get coffee and wrap her head around the concept...Told her about my not smoking, lol, she wanted to know what exactly am I smoking to be having stuffed critters for a visit.
Hahah, told her I will have them explain their journey when they meet her. Well, I am hoping they are here in time for that...LOL, that might be the only excitement they have.

Audrey, How is Wayne, I hope he is doing ok and yikes his pups are doing ok too.
Also, hows your knee...I hope the pain has subsided.

Well, I am waving at everyone, hope your days are all well, warm and safe.

Betty, how is therag quilt coming? I didn't buy material for curtains yets either. Coupldn't decide what I want in there yet.

Shar, I hope you are doing ok.

Liz, what re you doing? Jacob has my phone today so no txting.

What are you all doing for the Superbowl tomorrow? I will be sewing and listening to these guys yell at the tv. LOL.

Alright going to see about pieceing this together.

Hey...Tonight marks 1 exact month of smoke free.
Celebration ommencing with a tootie roll!

Have a good day all...See you.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

OK-so this will obviously be the longest car ride of my life if I can't smoke w/ 3 non smokers in the car-I may need to hang my head out the window like a dog to smoke!!

Judy-when is your party??

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Just a quick scan, have the granddaughter underfoot........

Betty please take care, I worry about you constantly getting out in the freezing weather your having....it can't be conducive to getting you well!!!
SIL) and Laura (my Laura) can join you!!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Hi! I'm doing OK at the moment! Wayne's great, just cold! His pups got out of his yard yesterday where a tree limb fell on the fence and his neighbor put them back in the house and closed the doggie door! Thanks for asking about him!
I keep having flare ups with my knee, but I go back to the orthopedic Dr. Feb. 9th and he'll do an MRI to see what's causing it. Sometimes it wont let me sleep!
If anyone wants to donate for the people who are out of power in Mo. one place to send donations is to Slicer Street Baptist Church in Kennett MO. If you want to donate directly for Wayne, send to me, and I'll get it to him! Right now he's using propane tanks to keep some of the chill off. He's going to look for a generator today. At least he'll be able to keep up with the weather that way! I called him one night and he listened with me over the phone! 'Course he can't run his furnace off it 'cause he wont have a 220 hookup for it! I know those people will appreciate anything donated!
Thanks to all who've thought about all these people!
Audrey

Victoria Harbour, ON

Dropping in for a few seconds, Judy, everyone needs a break right, some smoke on their break, not we two, we come here and gab..got a bowl of soup by my side, ginger ale for the throat, sewing square to Darlene's rag quilt..OMG can I sew FAST when I say I have to finish it before starting curtains..shucks, figure at this speed it will be done by morning..

Honest though am playing with 'sewing' but it's kind of resting..just turned up the heat..starting to snow again, but all and all it's a nice weekend...

Judy you do make me laugh..special congratulations on your 1 month anniversary...did I tell you Lenny (Suzanne's hubby) quit smoking just before the grandaughter was born, what 6 months ago..OMG Suzanne got in the car the other morning, she wasn't a HAPPY CAMPER??? want to guess why...yep, he's started to smoke again...was she angry! It's Suzanne's birthday, I've treated her with a Christmas quilt AND a rag quilt but still should telephone to sing 'Happy Birthday' should I...best I do that..

Best go check on the bread...omg must be taking Suzie Homemaker lessons from Judy..

Waving to the rest of you....I'll have a talk with you when I get back...waving....

My driveway...

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Betty-sewing is a good restful thing to do, make sure you take naps and slee well at night too:)

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Look at all of that snow!!! My Goodness! So I'm guessing the driveway curves around to the house? That's a lot of shoveling for one person.

I've been MIA for a bit, busy day Friday, when I got home from work Dave was already in Hot Springs yacking with his buddies, so I met him there, we went to dinner, and we came home because he had to go to work. He has to work tonight too. Tonight will be his 14th day in a row.

I'm not feeling my best either, I have something going on, this started mildly on Thursday with the runs now I'm getting abdominal pains and not pooing. I guess this is that virus that's going around? I don't feel sick at all, no fever or anything. Weird.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Calling it a night...

Crissy, you start taking meds now before it does turn into something..called Suzanne for her birthday, thought she'd be painting the town red but she's in her jammies as well...

Crissy driveway doesn't curve..actually straight...there is about 200 feet of drive before you get to where I was taking the photo..still snowing out..yuk..

Know it's early for some, but it's bedtime for me..played sewing all day..have an 'X' sewn through each block, enough to make Darlene's quilt and 2 small ones for her kitties..tomorrow morning if I'm feeling well enough I'll start sewing them together...soup was good, slow cooker doing it's job on the stew for tomorrow and bread was mighty tasty..

Good Lord willing, we'll talk tomorrow...

Prayers for all in need and soft hugs going to those who just might need a hug tonight....

Night/night

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Good night Betty...sleep well.

Crissy if you aren't better by tomorrow I really would recommend you see someone.....don't want to take any chances.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Well I went to the bathroom, it feels like pms cramps in a different spot. I'm craving Captain Crunch, wonder what that will do? I had pizza for dinner LOL! If it is that virus it lasts for 7 to 10 days and I don't have any sick time to take off.

We're having stew tomorrow too, it's in the crock pot!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

crissy, any chance you are expectibng, or is it maybe your appendix? Please be careful, and have it checked out.
Betty, that quilt sure sounds comfy!
Night everyone.
