She's about to.....#41 Brug Addicts Chat

Coushatta, LA

Hey Karen i know what you mean about ready for spring.I hate cold weather,i don't like to go outside my self.I have all kinds of stuff i need to plant too.

Coushatta, LA

Bonnie, that brugmansia is beatiful.I just started them this winter from cuttings. They are such a beautiful plant.I'm glad you have alot to keep you busy. What is the color of Maya?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, Pegi, how disappointing..sorry you lost them. Seldom is it because of something we've done or not done..if it's a young plant, may be it's getting used to blooming, sometimes weather conditions is a factor-usually heat or rain.. or a combo.. .. Can't wait to see the ones you've still got. I'm so envious, it finally warmed up to 32 today.. :) Maybe you can still get some cuttings from her, later this year...are you fussing with any cuttings right now??? Karen, I'm going to plant more veggies this year...., I've been reading and researching... someone around here got me started on new ways of gardening above my clay soil... I can almost smell those maters.. sqaush, cukes, eggplant... mmmmm and peas, thanks for that technique of growing them on your lawn.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi Cody, Maya has whiteish/green variegated foliage and the blooms start white and turn to a peachy/orangy color.. I'll try to snap a new bloom pic when she unfurls some down there. One summer she had so many on one flush, I stopped counting after 1,000.. I can only get her to root in the growing season.. :(

Coushatta, LA

I bet she is a beauty.Bonnie i will talk to you tomorrow.I'm getting ready to go out to eat.So stay warm and bundle up.

Good night.
Cody

Mmm.. I'm off to the kitchen.. Enjoy!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hey Karen, do you still have that little puppy? How is she doing as far as going outside?

LK

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for asking Linda Kay! Lexi is doing beautifully! She waits patiently at the door for me to clip on her lead rope (which I keep pulled under the door) and then we I open it she is happy as a clam. She did escape one other time by my daughter's feet as she opened the door for a friend, so we just really have to watch her close. But we sure do love her. I think this summer we are going to cement under the gates and around the fence so that she can't dig out and we can maybe let her play freely in the yard.

Hope everyone is warm tonight, I'm full and good for nothing. Just snuggled up in a down blankie with 3 little Bostons on top of me and watching the boob tube.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

AuntB, I got this brug last July so she is a new plant, never bloomed before. Can't wait to take a picture of her in bloom. She is in a big pot away from the dogs so they can disturb her. I have a few rooted ones that I'm babying along. The tiny leaves do fall off and I hope that is kind of normal. I did lose a few plants, but happy that I do have some growing for me.

I wish I could send some sunshine back to all of you. I know everyone is looking forward to warmer weather so they can start gardening again.

Good night ladies or should i say good Morning,

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Mornin everyone, off to work I go.. sheesh.. my Iochroma is getting ready to flush on three branches, Maya is leafing like crazy, all brugs are just leafing, my forced bulb pots are up about five inches and starting to feather, and I am driving for a mini RU t meet Merpeg Monday.. can't wait! Karen I am glad Lexi is bringing you such Joy, Anjil, Cody, Linda Kay, pegi, Bonnie good to see you all.. It has been freezing here.. my back is doing better, just taking it easy.. my gardenias have buds, my winter sown seeds are all sprouted and first leaves forming, now to get the next batch going..
I think I have 20 different JMGS vining right now, and I have three brug seedlings out of the 10 pots I planted from seedsprout.. afraid to transplant them they look so happy right now..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I need to ask you all what is the best way to fill in an area. I have this long area, along the side of our driveway Right now it is nor being used for anything, so I thought I could get some one in here to dig out a few feet of the rock hard coliche sooil, and bring in some nice healthy soil. But I have a chain link fence on two side, (the end, and the back side). What can I use for like a little wall, to build it up? I need to build it up a bit, to try and keep my siberian husky out of it. Or he will dig it up!
This is a picture of the area, and there is probably 15 more feet behind the old vette.
This area is in full sun, so I figures if they are in the ground, the brug would be OK, there?
LK
Would appreciate any and all comments!

LK, I would use old cement to build a dry wall all along the bed to build it up. if you dont have any....check craigslist or freecycle for your are and see if there is anyone that just broke up cement and needs to offload it. or if you can afford it, you can buy cinder block and fill them with dirt to create a retaining wall along that driveway.

have you considered a climbing rose to cover the chain link fence? might make a good background for the brugs ^_^

Nice 75* here today ^_^ doesnt even feel like winter! LOL! rains and cold weather will probably get here right about the time I can really work in the yard lol! 3-5 more weeks til I can lift things :( until then, I just get to pull weeds and dream lol!

Have a great day everyone!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

If that were my area I would do MGs on the fence or any other vines, ( I have about ten kinds of vines on my fences)
and I agree with Anjil about lining the driveway edge with a rock garden sort of retaining wall, grow small flowering plans in side the rock edges or cinderblocks, brugs in front of the fence with vines behind would look lovely as well as zinnias, four o' clocks, cardinal flowers, sages and salvias.. in front of the brugs ... what a nice area.. cones and daiseys too.. should I send you what I would plant there?? ( you know I would! ) ;D

Hi AnjL! I know, where's JB and Texasgrower? Hummingbird Mary? I think everyone is busy playing in the dirt or on other threads learning and planning.. The cinder block is fine idea.. your doggie is kinda big, would a couple rows high give him the idea to stay out? How wide is it from fence to driveway? 4-5ft? The brugs would fill it up nicely, they may hang over the driveway eventually... cool! I keep most of my brugs in practically all day/full day sun, but I'm in Kansas... I think some of the CA brug lovers shade them in the afternoon.... I'm just imagining the space all filled in with blooming brugs! How pretty! I'm going to try some straw bale gardening for a few things this year (even if I move... I'll just try to scoop them up and take with me) I hope the deteriorating bales and newspaper under and around them help amend the clay/rock I'm sitting them on.. it's next to chain link/full all day sun.. I've always wanted some workable soil there.. I may even try a brug plant in a bale.. it's just a way to hopefully amend the soil and grow some veggies for the table (+ a few experiments) But if you have good dirt and help available.... I say go for it! 3-5 weeks isn't too long to NOT lift things.. :) It's the silver lining... someone else has to lift heavy things.. lol -I know what you mean, I'm a "I'll get it done myself" kinda person, too. Just ease yourself back into stuff like that.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Gosh, YES! Vines, Debra that is a wonderful idea, you have such a talent for visioning and design... Oh...passionvines! She lives in CA! Cones, daisies, lillies to fill in! Oh, Anjl, how fun!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Howdy all! Oh, all this talk of flowers makes me happy! With the veggies going now, I have too many irons in the fire, LOL! But I'm happy. Jerry says I need to quit adding to my hobbies! Funny how gardening "should" be inexpensive, but after you buy this and that, and fertilizer, and bug spray, etc. it can sure build up if you don't watch it.

I put a pan of my broccoli cheese corn bread in the oven and am still lazing around in my gown tail...I know, I'm bad, but just lazy today. It's warmed up alot but still dreary and rain in the forecast. Hope everyone's having a great one! Love you!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey Bonnie, I'm around. My Space pals ask that same question. I spend so much time on Dave's now that I'm not updating my space or checking messages. Gardening and grandparenting have taken over my life. What a way to live. ^_^

I like the idea of vines too. I'm planning for a lot of vines in my landscape this year. I have a passion vine I planted last Oct at the base of a tree. it has done great in this cold weather. The rest are clematis and mgs. And one vine I forgot the name of but the flowers look like a sting of pretty pink pearls and the leaves are heart shaped. I grew them from seed a couple of years ago. I got them from my B-I-L. I will have to ask him what they are again.

I spent the day sowing seeds in pots. Some I will use and others will be for the Spring RU whenever that is. I also planted morning glory tree seeds. I really hope they germinate. Those and the Texas Star hibiscus. I love planting and watching them germinate. Such a feeling of success.

All the brug cuttings are growing like champs and I transfered seven more out to the workshop. They go outside when the weather permits. They just got too big for the bedroom.

My brug "recipe" has a funky smell. Can it go bad? I think I will make a fresh batch and hopefully use it up faster.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks for all the ideas. I like them all, and I agree, that stone or cinder blocks would look nice. And the vine idea would look great too. Once our stores start selling plants, I will have to take a look and see what I can come up with.
Look what we bought this morning.

LindaKay, I work at a dealership in Wichita, Ks.. I used to work for a group that had several locations including Texas.. called Fenton Ford.. anyways, it is good to see you post a pic of a new car purchase.. we have seen alot of new car purchases in our area.. as I told my DH, people are still buying things.. the economy is not as bad as the media makes it sound..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I heard that. They were really busy with sales when we were there. Only one finace lady working, so it took like 4 hours to wait in line to do the paperwork. But when ya have something this pretty, I don't mind waiting. Plus the interest rate on the loan was 5.4%. Not too bad. There are 2 Fenton Ford's up in the North part of Texas.

I am jealous of that Hot Rod! maybe someday.....

We have lost most of the dealerships here in my town. Went by our AutoMall this weekend after we noticed that the Ford, Chevrolet and Saturn dealers all had empty lots. Most of the dealerships at automall also have empty lots....assuming they are closing up :( We had about 30 dealerships there last year :( Not sure why they are pulling out of our area so fast....maybe a CA regulations thing? Neither DH nor I read or watch the news anymore...maybe I should buy a paper! LOL!

I have a general brug question..... I have three brugs in the ground and when I was outside today I noticed that all of the leaves have dropped off and they are all just sticks coming out of the ground now. They dont look all shriveled up or anything. Did I loose them? we had some pretty low temps around christmas time, but now its 70-75* each day. All the other brugs are in pots on my covered porch and they all still have leaves. One is actually blooming too! LOL!

So can anyone tell me how to tell if I lost the three in the ground? and if not lost yet, should I just leave them be?

AnjL

Coushatta, LA

Hello everyone.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

There's a good chance they'll come back in the spring unless you had a prolonged freeze. Don't water them much until they recover, so you don't get root rot. I had some that I thought were gone when we had that unusual freeze 2 years ago. Most came back. Good luck!

Mary

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks. I haven't watered them at all, just what rains came. been recovering from the surgeries and unfortunately my garden has paid the price :(

I'll just leave them be and cross my fingers. These are the three I started from seeds, so I am kinda fond of them! lol!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

On my daily walk to my brug I noticed a couple had opened. I went back in the house and got my camera so I could post a picture of my first brug ever. It is light pink and very pretty. I put my hand under under the flower so I could see it better, took my picture and then the bloom fell to the ground. As I stood there almost ready to cry I picked it up and took it inside to show hubby. His response was the brug is probably camera shy. He never passes up an opportunity to make some remark no matter what it is.

I found more small buds on the ground, and by chance I found a large green worm eating the lower leaves.
