She's about to.....#41 Brug Addicts Chat

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Debra you use anything and everything for planting, I see. I have a couple shriveled up brug cuttings and I'm not going to give up on them yet. I'm not having much luck with germinating, but not giving up on that either.

We are supposed to get some nice warm weather by the end of the week, hoping I feel like planting some seeds.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

here are a few more pics tonight, just got home from paulines.. yes, I use everything I can recycle, and including an old curio for an incubator..

Looky all them babies. : ) Lots of green going on. I have seen alot of thinsg used for inculabtion but never in wildest dreams would have thought abotu a curio cabinet. Cool idea!!!!!!!!

Wet and soggy here and damp is in the air all around and more rain on the way. Gota go to store soon. next doot gone again and havign to feed their dogd and went to feed the chickens and there no food anywhweres for them so they probaby out and dont knwo fi they can eat dogfood or not so gonna have to see abotu dryign to town to feed store.

Have no idea what all these neighbors gonna do when I gone for the day or two myself and not here to take care of their animals.

Ok gotta go check out chicken forum and find out what kinda food i need to get for these critters. Hope everybody has a good day!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone. Look at all the cuttings growing. I would be afraid to place them in a curio cabinet. I think the moisture would ruin the wood?
Hope your all staying warm.

Ella, bless your heart, caring for those poor animals. You're an angel. My neighbors keep their sheppard pair caged, but they do occasionally let them out to run and I know they feed them. Course my lil Missy kitty and my bird are like my children, but I do think about all the animals being neglected, even abused... guess if they can't all have respectful owners, wish they all had neighbors like you. Debra, so enjoyed your pics, what a zone challenged grower you are.. glad to hear about the MG's sprouting, I wasn't sure how old that seed was.. Cold and sunny here, venturing out to the "big" city for rations-- people and animal. Doing some business at the bank and hope to start getting my unemployment soon. I'm having a rough spot and will take a few weeks for everything to "even" out on the monetary scene. I have my health and family so all will be fine. A bit more organizing of boxes and tubs to get the Christmas stuff stored away and I'll be ready for seeds and dirt...yippie!.. and I'm getting the marbles out (from the great H.marble caper) and starting on my bowling ball, too. Cat so glad to see your post, hope you are on the road to recovery..been wondering how things are going for you. I might have a Naughty Nick down there on the mat, if so, I'll sure share some of him with you this spring. Anjl, hope you and your family are all feeling better.
LK, I don't like to give up on a cutting either, I just keep watering it along with the rest... call it denial or maybe stubborness ;) but every once in a while, I see green. Deb, I'm still watering the iochroma stick, so enjoyed the pic of yours blooming. I got my issue of Horticulture mag yesterday... it's official - the front cover says "Get ready for Spring!" Plants won't go outside until the first of May here, so I think that gives me a lot of time to get ready (she says now).

(Cathy), MO

I'm not throwing in the towel yet, but it sure is looking puny.

The last few weeks have been something else, but hopefully things can settle a little now. Hope the unemployment kicks in soon. I still have a job so I won't complain. It's getting scary out there!

Hope everyone has a super day

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Wow, so many plants going, and a curio cabinet!! DH brought home a small curio cabinet about a year ago, but no way am I giving it up for plants. I've save some covers from pies, etc. to use for tiny green houses. Now to get myself away from the computer to start thinking about planting some seeds.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

back home for a bit, Pegi: I too use all kinds of plastic covers as well... this curio is just beat up.... i did not want to toss it out as the people did who gave it to me, i got it to use for an incubator only since both top and bottom lights work well for heat...
still have a job so far... we will see.. Bonnie , prayers for your speedy unemployment checks.. Cat , good to see you! HUGS TO ALL OF YOU!

The largest bud on my brug is starting to open. Of course, didn't have my camera with me but will take a picture of it tomorrow. I did take a picture of plant a couple days ago to show off the buds. A new experience for me!!

Evenign everybody!
I played hooky away fro the house today. Felt good. I been lookign at seeds day and night for weeks now so felt good to be outdoors.

Pegi. How exciting. Ya makign me jealous!!!!!!!!! Who is it do ya know??

I need some advice and help with my brug babies, if ya don't mind.

I went out this mornign to un cover mine adn give em some fresh air and found five leaves from off my nealy rooted cuttings that had chew holes all over and in them and a couple had the edges all chomped on.

They whole leaf was layign on top the soil and so was the leaf stem. I thought maybe they had all feel off, but they was all like piled togehter and layign almost on top of each other and they was kind a stuck together. I looked and looked and stil can't find any signs of critter. What woudl eat holes and munch and then stack the leaves so perfectly?

Also, forget the name of the one cuttign I got but notice d that am havign some sort of either mild varigation or posibly a virus goign on with one of them.

Thought I read somewhere where brugs cna get some sort of virus. Anybody have a pick of what a sick brug would look liek or how can I tell if it got a virus.

heard the news and heard the weatehr gonan get downright bad and nasty especially for folks in the north with wind chills comign of up to -60F below, so thos eof you in the north, pelase becareful, but if ya cna stock up on candles and water and food that dont need cooked and bread and things. The 5F temps plus the extreme wind chills and snow may knock out yoru power.

I hope and pray it don't and that ya all are able to stay safe and warm.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Our mild weather seems to be helping the brugs. We are suppose to get temps. in the 80's and no sign of rain in the forecast.

Starlight, I have no idea I was going to be so lucky to have some buds open. I have a couple more large buds and I think they will open soon too. I do have a NOID one that has holy leaves, but is fighting to survive. I did find green worms on some of the leaves, but sorry I can offer any advice on what is wrong with your babies. Some of the leaves are turning yellow, but I'm not going to fret over that since the plant does look so healthy.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Star, if they are outside look for slugs or snails, that happens to me outside with other plants..

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Good morning all! Sorry I haven't been around for awhile but I've been concentrating on my veggie gardening and getting seedlings started. My bruggies aren't doing anything special, just "surviving" until they get put outside in the Spring.

Everything is well here, hope it is with all of you too. I think about you all every day and love you much, but I am trying to get more accomplished around the house and yard and not just sit at the computer all day and night. I have just spent so much time chatting on DG threads the past 6 months I've neglected things around here and need to get caught up!

Love you all bunches! {{{hugs}}}.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Yesterday I discovered another bud opening on my brug. I've never given one plant so much attention and I think she thrives on it.

Sounds like so many are starting to get spring fever early, but guess it never is too early for those who start germinating seeds.

Karen, I too spend too much time on the computer and nothing else gets done. I think I have to look the door to my "office" and give someone else the key to hold for me.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

samigal, is your brug indoors or outdoors? I have mine on my front porch and Audrey Hepburn is still blooming away! I think I may have lost the three that I had planted in the ground tho :( we have had such a wierd winter! down in the 30s last week, this week its up in the 70s !! dont know if I need my winter coat or my shorts when I dress each day! LOL!

sorry been away so long! life calls ALOT these days ! grr! I DID get to work in my garden a little this weekend, wore myself out planting some annuals and pulling weeds. Had some friends come help me and we did get alot accomplished...but there is much much more to do! :( maybe next month I will have more stamina and able to do more. like pour the cement walkway :o) okay....maybe thats wishful thinking! lol!

I sure miss all my brug friends here!

{{Hugs to all!}}

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hello Anjl, long time no hear from you. Hope your doing better. Iknow that it will take some time for you to heal, but it will get there. Just don't over do it. Glad to hear you had some friends help you out.

LK

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

AnjL, I have my plant outdoors in the back of the yard. There is a brick fence there and I think that gives my brug some protection. I have 3 buds now opening and patiently waiting. Our weather has been "hot" lately. Up in the high 80's, feels like summer. We don't get temps. lower than 40 so I feel I'm OK unless a frost comes in then I'll have to put up some protection. I have some brugs I rooted and I take them out for a little sun but bring them in at night. Don't want to take a chance of losing them. By spring they should be ready to join my grown up one and maybe a bigger pot too.

Glad to hear you are getting out in the yard even if it just doing a little work. You will be up and ready by spring for sure.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

morning everyone, just thought I would check in, spent the night at Paulas' taking care of Pauline, she seems to be holding on... went out to the sunny but in the teens temps this am to undo the mound of covers on my BackYardMonster Brug I blogged on last fall, had to cut her up and bring her in if ya all remember, left about 8 inches of her in the ground, she is thriving just fine, so far.. warm as a cucumber under the mound of heavy palstic bwol. burlap, moving pads, a big plastic bag full of mg vines and seed pods, and leaves mounded on top.. I have that area mounded up on all sides of her since she is accessable from the back of the fence as well..will post a pic of her in a bit..

Howdy Howdy, my precious friends! I think we are all busy with life. Isn't it wonderful? I think about you all as I get my chores done and work on my projects and am away from the computer. I had more time for DG when I was at work 9 hours a day.. lol - least I got to play while I got paid. These days when I get on the puter, I always end up at job web sites... and after a while, it's almost over whelming,...I just get up and walk away. I have realized I DO like to work outside the home and I'm really thinking of working somewhere that I can do something with plants, cause that's my passion.. I only hope I can find something that would pay the bills and put food on the table, a vacation 1 or 2x a year and potting soil.. I don't need a huge salary, but I would like to ENJOY my job and employer this time.. I'm so glad you popped in, Anjl... and my my, I thought you would be taking it easy..?! How grand you can get out there and get things accomplished.. and you have helpers! just like Pegi said, tho don't over do it ;) .. I'm glad things are calmed a bit at your home. If I'm in a bad mood, or stressed I can spend even 10 minutes in the "greenhouse" and my whole attitude is refreshed.. they offer such good therapy for me. Cold and sunny here so far today.. few rain drops and snow flurries yesterday but no accumulation.
I made some Moose Munch (left over cereals, pretzels, kissables and dry roast peanuts drenched in almond bark).. everyone, dig in.
I did get some brug seeds bagged up. I have 4 Red Sangs and 2 Ludger crossed of B.Delph that sweet mama Kim gave me and I hope at least 1/2 of them germinate.. I need to inspect my cross on Antique Lace, wonder if it's time? I really haven't noticed too much change in the color of the pod, so I don't think the seeds are done baking yet..;) I'm trying to start Little Business Day lily seeds and the budha belly seeds from dear Joyce. Also in the start pile is Easter Egg plant and some other stuff.. I need to get off here and get busy, everyone enjoy and you CA girls enjoy those outside blooms... (new bloom for me Golden Lady, tiny little double white...woohoo, I'll try to get a pic).. -B

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hey Bonnie, waving at ya! Glad to hear you have a bloom. Good luck on finding the garden job. Are there a lot of nurseries around you?
Waiting for the picture.

LK

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh LK! How's your foot healing? Honestly, I have some options, so I'm going to take a few months to go through the 20 yr stash of placeless stuff in the basement and.. as I do, also ponder and research my options. If I end up not moving.. HEY YIPPEE more plant room in the basement, right! ? There is a large nursery in Manhattan, almost 40 miles away.. If I do take the nursery avenue, I'd relocate to Kansas City area, if the job was my niche. So sorry, I didn't mean to make you wait so long.. (I just went down and snapped this...) Here's the little Golden Lady.. she's trying to get her color and push that 2nd lil skirt out.. awww.. :) the whole plant is about 2 ft tall. But I think this one will get bigger.

Pic of most of my brug babies.. growing in moss and living on the recipe. I do anticipate they will need to be potted up before Spring.. I'm sure I could even pot them up now... (added to the fun list) we are suffering spider mite here at my house, they started on the big Versi tree cutting in the bucket... and a few on the tropical hibiscus upstairs.. arg! Seems I just barely have it under control.. I yearn for spring and lady bugs. Good Night.... (you lurkers, too;)

Look at all those brugs!! I didn't check my brug today, trying to be patient here waiting for my blooms to appear.

Weather has been really hot, turned air conditioner on in car today. Love the warm weather, so glad it cools off at night. Can't believe we aren't in the middle of a summer heat wave. As soon as I decide it is time to wear cooler type clothes it will get cold again.

Hope you find that job you want AuntB, but having to locate is such a stressful job for me.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Mornin everyone, just heading off to work and wanted to share my pot of coffee... have a great day and don't forget to hug your brugs today! Debra

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hey Bonnie, thanks for the beautiful pics. So pretty.
My feet are healing slowly, but I was told they would take time. I am flying to Michigan next week-end, to bring my Dad back to Texas. He can't wait for me to bring back here to a warmer place. He does not like the cold!
Off to therapy for my feet.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello all! Hey Cody girl! How've you been? We've been missing you! Everything has been slow lately, but it's just such a yucko time of year that none of us are doing much. The Brugs aren't doing much either right now..

It got down to 25 here last nite, the low so far for the year. It's only 27 now, at 9:30. I have on my sock monkey p.j.'s (no kiddin', they are blue flannel and have sock monkeys printed all over them!) and I have no intention of changing out of them today, LOL! I have no idea why, but Jerry loves me in these darn things.

Deb, I hope you are feeling better hon? I sowed my love lies bleeding seeds in a big pot in the greenhouse and have tiny sprouts so I've been thinking about you!

Hey Linda Kay! Glad you're foot is doing a little better. I know you miss your dad too, soon things will be back to normal.

Ella girl what have you been up to lately? Are you staying plenty warm? I hope all is well with you hon.

I transplanted a bunch of seedlings into 4" pots last night (ah, the joy of gardening in 25 degree weather, it was exhilarating!) and if I have time I might take a pic of my babies and show ya'll later.

Love to you all my friends, soon it will be spring and we will be chatty cathys again!

Coushatta, LA

Hey Karen,I'm doing good.I just been trying to stay warm i hate cold weather. How about you?

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Cody my old bones are ready for spring weather. NOT August weather here, just Spring will do me fine, LOL! I am planting an asparagus bed this week, they have to be planted when it's still cold. Once they are planted, they produce for about 25 years so you never have to do it again. I can't wait for fresh asparagus, but you have to wait until the 3rd year to harvest them.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, if my feet start to hurt, I can alway get a skycap, (hopefully good looking) to push me in a wheel chair! LOL My feet are doing pretty good, and I have my good and bad days. I am flying American Airlines, and they do pretty good about getting the customers from one terminal to the next. Now that I have said that, it will not go smoothly, but I will get a chair if i need it.
Hope you are all staying warm. Itis 49 here today, and not too bad. I still have had no frost or anything affect my outdoor plants. They are still growing. Too cold for blooms, but hopefully I will get a head start for spring?
Take care

LK

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Cody, I've been researching seeds and plants, I think I saw you on the plant trading forum, but I'm NOT allowed on the forum... it had to be somewhere else.. lol I have some seeds buried, 2 liters, solo cups, and some 6-packs, anything that holds dirt and water.. :) doing some medium testing, too. Easter Egg plant, summer sky cone flowers, lilies, Rose of Sharon and one (so far) sprouted red sang brug seed. This time of year seeds and plants is about all that keeps me from going stir crazy. It's Jan and I want it to be at least March... (single digits and a blanket of snow this morning)
I wanted to report harvesting of the brug seed pod, on the cross I made last summer... not exactly scheduled, but I think it was close enough to being ready... I noticed a change in it, it's texture wasn't as firm as it had been. It looked like it was going to rot off at the stem (hope I'm explaining okay) so I turned to move the hose to get a better look and knocked the darn thing off. I brought it upstairs, opened and the seed is drying out. I think I counted around 25 seeds. I'll probably try to start 1/2 dozen seeds and see if they germinate. Most of Maya's "unknown" seed pods are holding and she is getting ready to bloom again and the monster white has hardly stopped blooming all winter. When Maya's seed pods mature, I'll probably offer seeds to the HBA's for postage, if anyone wants to try some. They would be fun to experiment with, Maya is one of my fav brugs. Here's the cross pod, opened... I hope some are viable. (the Maya cutting I kept last fall did fine in the moss for a while, but it was one of about 3 or 4 that didn't make it. I'm having so much fun with seeds and plants.. they seem to be something stable in my life right now. Something I can count on, reliable.
I wanted to report on the Blue Clerodendrum I received from Debra (joeswife) last fall as part of our old groups "one plant you want" list. It's doing great, growing in my south french doors.. Thanks again, Debra it's brought unmeasureable enjoyment for me, can't wait to see blooms this summer. Need to get busy, keep up on another thread and get my old fingers back in potting soil... Ahhhh!

Heya Bonnieboo! Sounds like you are a busy bee! I just came in from the GH again, can't quit looking at all my babies. Jerry walked in the other night and laughed at me because I was staring at the seed trays, trying to watch them grow, haha! Seriously, all transplants are doing great this morning and I'm one happy lady!

I'm still very excited about doing the Earth Box gardening this summer. Am fixing to sow corn, 4 types of tomatoes, purple hull peas, collard greens, lettuce yellow sqash, and zucchini... I THINK that's all....No wasted away in Margaritasville for me, I just want my big old plate of maters and my shaker of salt, hehe!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

On my daily trip to look at my brug I found 3 more buds that had dropped tro the ground. The two that have poked their heads out are doing great and I'm getting so anxious to see the final results. Have no idea why the buds are falling, our weather has been so wonderful and can't find any sign of yucky bugs. Must be the time of year, you think? Went by the house on the next block that had a beautiful yellow brug and noticed it was all trimmed way back. Missed out on my chance to get some cuttings to root.
