Todays Weather in Your Garden - 35

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

hee hee

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

It is 11° here but not much wind. Light snow falling again. Just about 11" of the stuff, more tomorrow and may mix with sleet/rain just to make it extra nasty. Don't like winter much any more.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Hope everyone is safe and warm!! Looks very pretty, JoAnn .... well, looking at it, anyway!! :-)

Tomorrow will be a major snow event (even for us Buffalonians). So much so they are not even predicting any snowfall amounts, though they have committed that it will be more than what we got yesterday. Along with winds over 40 MPH. There will be a storm to dump about 4-6 inches, then a small break before the pounding of Lake Effect Snow. I am hearing we will probably see well over 12 inches.

Yesterday, we officially received 10 inches of snow, but I think it may have been slightly more, breaking a 23 year-old record snowfall for the day. The "official measurements" are taken at the airport, which is about 2 "big blocks" away.

Niagara Falls (LaSalle) measured 13.5 inches which is closer to where Grampapa is.

Many of the schools were closed before 6am, when it was still crystal clear out, making for a lot of happy schoolers, I bet.

Currently:

Sunrise: 7:43

Light snow, 12ºF (feels like 3º) ; High, 18ºF ; Low, 12ºF
Wind: 6 mph, direction NE
Pressure: 30.18 in, steady
Humidity: 82%, Dew point: 9ºF
Visibility: 1.0 mi, UV-index: 0, Low

Sunset: 16:43

Measured: Dec/20/08, 08:31

OOOO boy Willie
I know what your in for.
Havnt got the courage to call DD#3 to see if GD made it home from Vt.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Still snowing out there. Might be over a foot. Looks like a lot to me. It took me a long time to shovel out my driveway. I gotta get out there and take some pictures. It sure is pretty.

Karen

Here's my car in the driveway.

LOL Victor. He is adorable. Raid the salad drawer did you? Bet that was fun. Still snowing here, although it is very very light but just will not stop. At least there is not much wind with a temp of 16°. ☃

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That was the work of my wife and kids. I'm sure the deer will be sampling from the buffet.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Love the snowman... boy am I jealous, we just got the icy rain...man is it cold here today... low of 17 high of 26

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We only got up to 21!

12-18" tomorrow with 45-50 mpw - ARGHHHHHH get me out of here!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

10-16" predicted here, same with the winds, white-out conditions and temps staying in the teens.

arghhhhhh - I dont want it, I dont like it and if I did not live here I would not have to have it.

Send me to - a tropical island with palm trees and a white sandy beach. A hammonck that is between 2 palm trees. Pineapples and coconuts to snack on with a side of shrimp or beefcabobs. A pair of sandels you can go into the water and get seashells that need a home. Some wood that you can have a bonfire next to the oceans edge.

A computer with electric - so I can communicate !

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

It's cold! snow has most of my roses covered... the bottom is pure ice from the previous storm... no chance to cover them with leaves or mulch... now let's see what really comes back next year... no protection at all... oh I am praying for them!!!!

Victor, my nephews are dying to make a snow man... but no luck since the snow is so fluffy!!!! yours is really cute!!!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

We had one nice day to shovel and fill bird feeders.
It started snowing at1:00AM and its still at it.
GD started out from VT. 3oclock Friday hit the storm at Albany and slid off the road. Thank gawd for the cell phone, she was talking to her mother when the trooper came and informed her she had a warrent out for an unpaid tickit in a suburb here. DD assured they would straighten it out when GD got home.
Tow truck came and they made arrangements for a hotel.
Sat.GD called to say the key wouldnt turn in the lock.
SIL coached her thru all the scinerios with no luck. Meanwhile another storm was on its way so he drove 4 hours to get her.
She's home now Merry Christmas.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Goodness! Glad she's safe and sound and home now!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I think this was the worse weather she has experienced ever.
Thanks pixi we are all relieved.

Just started to snow

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sixteen degrees here. Finally stopped snowing just in time for the next round. This one looks to have the bulls-eye on all of you up north. Three to six inches predicted here, then change to rain, freezing rain and flash freeze overnight. Bad news is anything that isn't moved out of the way will be rock solid by tomorrow am. Good news looks like a mini thaw wed. and Christmas day for those that are traveling.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Bill.
I'm planning my gardens for next year. The works files of flowers by color, and yes taking the plants off the nursery catalogues on the web.
Even resorted to camera against the terminal for those sites that have a lock on their images.
I dont intend to compete with their business but need the pics for color reference.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

24 here now.. and snowing... we are supposed to get 1 - 2 more inches

Its official :-/

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21, 2008 at 7:04 AM EST and 12:04 UT (Universal Time).

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

woo hoo!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Hope everyone is safe and warm!! Sounds like everyone lives in Buffalo today!!

Glad to hear things worked out safely (even if not perfectly) for your GD, JoAnn. Sliding off the road is definitely no picnic! Good thing we all had our fingers crossed!

Computer Trick:
(For Color Reference Pics: To save "locked" pictures on a website (use Screen Grab), if you are on a MAC "Apple+Shift+4" brings up crosshairs you can drag to select which part of the screen you want to capture, on a PC you can hit the print screen key and save the whole monitor image)

3 or 4 inches fell here over night and are enjoying a brief break for the moment, before another 3 to 6 inches falls in the next hour or so, then another break. The BIG punch will come after that, sometime this afternoon when the Lake Effect Machine kicks in an additional foot or so. So, we could get almost two foot of snow today.

Good thing I like to shovel .... when I was a kid we would wait till the snows fell and then shovel. Now, I don't like to let two inches fall before I am out there trying to get a head start on it. Heavy snow = sore back. The exercise is good, but I can see how it would be very dangerous for some.

Sunrise: 7:43

Light snow, 27ºF (feels like 13º) ; High, 27ºF ; Low, 16ºF
Wind: 21 mph, direction SSW
Pressure: 29.50 in, falling
Humidity: 82%, Dew point: 23ºF
Visibility: 4.0 mi, UV-index: 0, Low

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh yeah .... Happy Solstice, Everyone!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll give that a try Willi. there are several sites that have locks on.
Dont know why though I thought they all subscribed to the same image bank.
Thats why the same pics appear in different catalogues.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Happy winter solstice everyone. Days will get longer starting tomorrow headed toward spring!
It's snowing again, just lightly. Temp is up to 19°. Wind at 40-50mph gusts later on could pose some more problems with the heavy wet snow on the trees still. Looks like Maine could get the worst of this one. Load up the firewood Pixie.
Glad your GD is home safe and sound JoAnne before the next mess hits. Scary thing to get stuck out in the middle of a snow storm far away from home.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I keep identifying with myself in that same situ. I also forget they have cell phones to stay connected.
She tends to have a heavy foot on the gas so this will remind her what happens on slippry roads. She was on the interstate but never the less.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

We are now at 0 and the snow will start soon.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

My cousin in Rockland says its that cold there too and cant believe the snow we have here.
Hot tub buddies this AM
Check out those spruces. They had to shovel it out to get in it.

29 and snowing again. Expecting 2-4 more inches. Okay - that's now enough for me for the year!

Thomaston, CT

Ten inches in the first storm, snowing heavily right now! At least 3 new inches on my shoveled walks---rats! I hate snow & ice & cold----we are supposed to be leaving for FL on the 28th, but yesterday an offer came in for the FL house---we've been hoping to sell it forever, but not NOW!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Snowing harder now, could mix with rain later then the whole mess is going to freeze. Yuck! Have about a foot so far, don't need 3-6 more. Temp up to 29° now. Wind picking up too. I'm with you Victor, had plenty to last for the whole season. ❄❆❅

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Snow has just about stopped and it's getting brighter. That's probably it. One good ting is that it will get very cold tomorrow so the snow will be a good insulator. That's the only good thing I can think of!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

If we still have power, I'll think that THAT'S a good thing!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Of course! I was only referring to the snow.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL!

I knew that Victor. Really.

Here's our stats ..
Currently
10°
Wind: NE at 10 MPH, gusting to 23 MPH
Humidity: 85%
Dewpoint: 7°
Pressure: 29.88 in. and still falling
Windchill: -7°

Sunrise: 7:13 am
Sunset: 4:14 pm
Is it the Solstice yet?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - 7:04 AM. We're getting more light already!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

still snowing... and snowing... and so the roses are protected!
Hope it stops at some point...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Snowing again. Ugh.
