Don't work too hard.
LK
Tee Hee! Linda Kay, if I had time, I'd send you a box. But my CCC have butterscotch and raisins in them, too.
OOOOH!!! Sounds good, Peg!
YEAH....this elf shipped off her ornaments today and they said the package would arrive Wednesday....I am sooo excited......can't wait to see what everyone did.
I am sooooo far behind on the message I couldn't catch up in a month. Hope everyone is doing well and is going to have a great Thanksgiving and doing their part to up the economy by shopping on Black Friday! Say I am crazy but I love going out on Black Friday, I get up in the wee hours of the morning with a list, meet a friend and we are out for the day. By the time I get home my feet are killing me. I love the crowds and the decorations and all of that stuff.....
I'll take peanut butter cookies. If I were to venture out on Black Friday I'd probably end up behind bars for starting a riot. Can't handle crowds, now if the stores would let me in while everyone was still sleeping I could get some serious shopping done. I'm one of those last minute people, think it kinds of run in our family. Each year I plan on starting early, but that never happens. You know a person could get trampled to death in all those crowds!
I like to shop from Nov, till Christmas Eve! Especially when it's cloudy and cold, and looks like snow! 'Course all I can do this year is window shop, but that's fun, too! I like to go in W*M, get a riding cart, since I can't walk it any more, and stay for maybe 2 hours!
Audrey and Sami, sounds like fun.. I Usually have a half of my shoppping done by now, but with Pauline being so sick, we have all decided to NOT buy for all of us and only concentrate on immediate family, which will be ablessing for my adult children since they are always "tapped" out from their bills and such.. I am greateful my DH and I and my children all have jobs.. they are laying off around this town like crazy! ( aircraft Boeing, Cessna, Beech hawkerbeechcraft, Spirit, and Bombardier Lear jet) they call wichita the aircraft captial of the world, with mcconnel afb I can see why our area is so depressed.. half of the town works in some form of aircraft..
I have a baby seedling poking his head up thru the dirt! A brug seed I got from a DG'r!!! out of ten seeds I planted only one sprout.. so far! My triple datura metal purple and the white datura triples are doing great..
Maya is really leafing out.. I think she is happy where she is at.. I still have tiny buds on the Peach Versi Tree from bonnie, but two of the older leaves are turning yellow... I hope that is normal..
I still need to find out who gave me this brug standard.. it has to be from someone in this forum! It has a tag that says Joyces MOnster white, on it.. anyone want to tell me who I got this from? I can't memember! I think I am losing my mind..
Nah! This happens to brug lovers! I have sticks all over my kitchen, sprouting leaves, and roots! They are under a flourescent light above the sink, and I guess it's enough light, they seem to be doing well! I've lost one or two, but the rest seem to be thriving!
here's a pic of my brug sticks in various stages of growth. They are all in my guest bedroom under florescent lights, 12 hrs a day. I found a boot tray at WalMart for $5. It holds eight 1 gal pots. I can water now and not worry about the water running out the bottom. I didn't have enough saucers, so this tray works perfect. If I didn't have the sticks and containers marked, I'd never know what I had. I also have the name of the person who sent it to me and the date planted. A lot of writing on the pot. Now once they get in the ground I'll have to draw a map of the yard and what is planted where. My memory is not what it used to be. I may remember today what something is, but tomorrow? heh........
*sigh* I havn't even begun to show you all the rest.. this basement is 1900 square feet, divided by a wall and on one side it is tiled and the other is cement floor, this side where my table sits Used to be Finished! until the cracks and leaks and repairs and still more cracks, now it is a garden nursery.. here is the peach versi tree, and you can see maya in the back ground and the other tree standard from Bonnie is in the tub with Maya, my tomatoes are still producing down here..
What fun to check in and see you all showing your wintering areas and brug sticks! I'll take a pic of mine tomorrow if I have time. Deb your area looks like a rain forest, hehe! I'll bet you have PLENTY of oxygen in the house with all those beauties!
Black Friday shopping....ah, I used to love the whole experience! Haven't been in awhile though, used to do it every year when Wal-Mart still had layaway, I'd shop, lay it away and pay it off before Christmas. I just usually don't have alot of cash money on the exact day of Black Friday so that kind of stopped it for me.
Going to buy myself a Christmas present on Black Friday though ;) I'm getting a huge multi-armed bird feeder pole and several different feeders. I've even learned how to make homemade suet. Jeanne, TexasGrower, I didn't know, is practically a wild bird expert (yes, you know you are Jeanne, LOL!) and helped me a lot with bird feeding tips. Thanks Jeanne!
Night you lovely friends! See you in the morning ladybugs! {{{HUGS}}}

hugs back at ya Karen.. sleep well!
I buy all year long when stuff is marked down, but I just love the hustle and bustle, and friends and lunch and that kind of stuff. Won't go near a Best Buy that day....did that once and have a t-shirt that says I survived....I am still not sture...LOL
Joyces Monster white came from AuntB, who got it from me, who got it from "I will have to look" LOL.
Boot try is a great idea! I have brugs starting. Also have coleus going, along with a bunch of other stuff. Love the pics everyone.
Had to spend $200 on a dehumidifier for the garden room, I about croaked! Wish I had never put that vapor barrier around the room! Course now I won't have to haul water out there, LOL. Recycling..
Karen, I got a very thick well made four pronged hanger made of wrought iron and welded together, at the Purple Pig in Noonday. It's on the opposite side of the hwy and just before you get to Rubicons. A local makes them for $60. They also have the 2 prong for $30. I have tried the ones bought at the bird stores and they aren't made near as well. Racoons and squirrels have bent my store bought 4 prong. It would take an elephant to bend this one. Just to let you know. Have fun buying that stuff. I love picking out new feeders for my birds. I need to get some meal worms. I'm no expert, just love nature and study it. I learn a lot through trial and error.
You can't hardly tell by this pic, but it is big and quite substantial. Sits up a little higher than the bird store bought too which offers more protection from neighbor cats. Whatever you get, it will be a nice addition to your yard.
Debra, I have a lot of plants like that, but they are scattered about in the GH, front porch and workshop. The cuttings are the only ones in the house under lights. I wanted to bring my brugs in but was afraid the grandbaby would get into them. They are safe in the workshop. Now if I had a basement, I would probably use it. That is, if I could get up and down them with the heavier plants. Is yours a walkout? A walkout basement would be perfect.
wow nice plant hanger there! No... my basement is a 13 steep carpeted step down.. it is really an ugly basement, but it works for me.. I get excersise lugging water jugs up and down, and my poor duke dog gets excersise following me up and down.. when I get the water hose put on it will be easier to care for down here.. no one will come down here to see me.. well , my DS does, but then he was the only one who came outside to see me in the summer too.. hmm/ lol..
DH hates this basement.. it is the thorn in his side.. we have the ultimate money pit here.. I don't care as long as I have plants to look at!
wow, bless your heart, lugging all those plants up and down the stairs. You don't have to join a gym for a workout. The care of your plants is the workout. If it protects your plants it's worth it I know. I would come visit you in your basement.
Look at all those little tomatoes.
yes, will have fresh tomatoes for thanksgiving and possibly christmas, I have a huge wooden fruit crate in the garage full of green tomatoes that i bring in to ripen a few at a time.. plus i just picked a handful of little red cherry tomatoes from down here..LOL .. I really don't mind going up and down alot.. it keeps my 56 yr old legs in shape.
Morning!! I'm up and at em'. Have a great day : )
Me, too Kim! Hot pancakes with maple syrup and plenty of butter, bavon and/or sausage, HOT coffe and cold juice here for everyone! Help yourselves!
Thanks..wrappin' me a cake 'round a sausage and i'm outta here... yummo :p
Have a great day!
Morning everybody!
Looks like folks are busy .. busy .. busy. Thanks for breakfast Audrey.
Debra. I amintereste d i how you manageto keep the green tomatoes from rotting in the basement. I don't have a basement, but didn't know you could on to them like that.
Texasgrower. Pretty area ya got there.
Doubt I will go out for black friday. Hate being pushed and shoved around. I like going tothe stores that aren't busy, takign a look around.
One year was out shopping and it was really neat. Christmas music was playing away on the store speaker. I goign around half humming and half mumbling the owrds of the song and I hear somebody els enot to far from me singing too. next thingya know we getting brave and singing louder and a few other shoppers joined in. Was a really cool time. Funny how music like that can sometime sbring total strangers together even for a few minutes and have them walk away with smiles on their face.
What I looking for is an easy old fashioned recipe for popcorn balls. When a kid we used to make red and green popcorn balls and wrap them up in wax papper, twist the ends and tie with a littl epiece of colored ribbon and pass them out.
Mornin Girls!!
Audrey.. you just made the pancakes better when you said maple syrup and plenty of butter... ty for the coffee!!
Ella... we have a neighbor that puts the green tomatoes under the bed and they ripen.... Those popcorn balls sounds good, but I've never made them
Kim... there you gooooo again..lol have a good day!
Debra... 13 steps.. wow that ought to keep you in shape, and at 1900 sq.'... I'd probably just bring my bed down there..lol
hello everyone... I have my boys, and trying to enjoy every minute..
What a neat story about the singing! That's the way it ought to be!
Good Morning everyone! I so loved the pics Jeanne and Debra! And your store singing story Ella, that was great! Thanks for the coffee and juice, and what a nice breakfast! Thanks Audrey! I found a cinnimon popcorn recipe the other day, it's made in the microwave, with red hot candies, I might try it this year.. not sure if you could mold popcorn balls out of it, but I'll see if I can find it again. My sis was here and we were looking for thanksgiving recipes.. My great-grandma made caramel popcorn... I can still remember the smell of her house and she stored it in qt. glass canning jars.... guess they didn't have tupperware back then?? lol She also always had horehound candy... I hated it, but it was usually the only candy she had, so I would eat 2 or 3 pieces... just to be polite.. once in a while she'd give us each a WHOLE piece of Wriggleys doublemint gum.
LOL, Aunt B!! Things were tough all over! I don't think I had chewing gum till I was a great big kid! Then my grandmother didn't want us to have bubble gum, it would rot our teeth, or something! Do you remember ever chewing gum from a sweetgum tree? Tried it once, didn't like it!
Ya know what I remember from childhood that we would get pieces of. It was a form of what I called rock candy. It may have had another name. It came in an amimal shape and was different colors. The Jewel Tea man used to sell it. There was like maybe 6 piece sin the box.
You could pic one and always had a piece of wax paper around it, was like eating a giant sucker with it the stick. You got your piece and would lick away on that thing for about a week.
LOL oh ya , good old wrigleys and ya woudl save all the wrappers you could get to make one of them chains.
I never got that much gum! I still don't know how to make a chain!
Lol, aw the good times! Oh, lemon drops GG had lemon drops or the horehound candy...We didn't get a lot of gum as small children, but my older sis did make one of those gum wrapper chains when she was a teenager... kept it all coiled up in a 3LB coffee can, yet to be weaved wrappers in the center..... yes CAN, they weren't plastic...a lot of Teaberry gum wrappers...... the Teaberry shuffle... remember?? is that the name?
How bout BlackJack clove gum? hehehe...
Ella here are my favorite popcorn ball recipes....the first is the old fashioned kind you were looking for but the others are fantastic! You can tint any recipe with colors.....
My mother made these at least 40 years ago. They are the "traditional" popcorn balls....
POPCORN BALLS
3 qts popped corn
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup white corn syrup (Karo)
1 cup water
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
Discard all imperfect kernels & put the popped corn into a large pan. Cook sugar, Karo & water ot the medium-crack stage (280° on a candy thermometer.) Add vanilla & salt. Pour over the corn, stirring with a spoon so that all kernels will be evenly coated. Shape the corn into balls, lay on waxed paper & wrap in waxed paper.~~
Caramel-y Popcorn Balls
Ingredients
* 1/2 cup butter
* 3 cups brown sugar
* 1 cup Karo syrup
* 1 (14 ounce) can eagle brand sweetened condensed milk
* 1 tablespoon vanilla
* 4-6 quarts popped corn
Bring to boil butter, sugar, syrup. Add condensed milk- boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
Strain seeds from popcorn. Pour hot mixture over popcorn and mix. Grease hands and make balls out of mixture.
*extra note;
To remove the seeds, I usually take two bowls and lift out the popcorn by the hand fulls and shaking it, then dumping it into the extra bowl. When I get to the bottom, there lies most of the seeds. I just discard them and go on with the rest.
Chewy Popcorn Balls
Ingredients
* 1 cup unpopped popcorn
* 1/4 cup butter
* 1 cup miniature marshmallow
* 1 (16 ounce) box powdered sugar
* 3/4 cup light corn syrup
* 2 tablespoons water
* food coloring
Pop popcorn. Place in large bowl. Place all ingredients except for food coloring in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until mixture comes to full, rolling boil. Remove from heat. Add desired amount of food coloring. Pour over popcorn, stirring to coat well. Shape into balls with buttered hands.
Hello all busy busy busy...
Had a good ole time at the casino....didn't win any but we didn't lose much either...
That hotel room had a bathroom to die for...saw it and told my DH
I WANT THAT...
a beautiful giant walk in shower with a glass front...all travertine tile I think...
I could have a lot of fun in that....LOL
I'd be willing to give up my tub for something like that....
Got home around 2pm on Sunday and got a pizza and slept.....
Yesterday we cut 2 loads of wood.....So my bodies not moving too well today...
My MIL makes the popcorn balls....and wraps each one up in wax paper..
Remember the rock candy??
And my mom use to make hard cinnimon candy in a cookies sheet and break it up after it cooled off..
Got abt 3' of wet yucky snow yesterday durning the 2nd load of wood..got really slippery...LOL
here's my world today
Those are great recipes Karen! I'm going to try the caramel-y popcorn balls this year.. I have one of those air poppers and it works great for "sifting" through to find the "old maids"... my friends called the unpopped kernels, I remember how odd I thought it was to call them that, don't remember how old I was.
I was gonna mention the rock candy! My grandmother used to save it and use it in making cough syrup, along with whiskey, and assorted other things. I remember taking a teaspoon of sugar, kerosene and vicks for a sore throat. It would kill you, nowadays!
Doe I grew up my whole life being fed Vicks in a spoon by my Grandmammy and Mom. It works!!!!! STill do it....Grandmammy also would heat a spoonful of Vicks over the stove and make us stand there and inhale it....we also soaked cut feet and other places in a bowl of kerosene. Old time medicine is the best.
Hello everyone you all have beautiful flowers.
