She's About To.............#38 - Brug Addicts Chat

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Phyllis I love your little piece of the world. My DH always told me if I want snow we could go to the mountains. We did that when kids were small and they had a ball. Loved it as a kid, but think I really don't want it now. After seeing Debra's basement full of flowers I want a basement more than ever now. Of course, that isn't going to happen, but I can dream. I have a small area on top of a dresser in my "office" that has brugs growing, but need so much more space. OK, everything out of the office except computer so I can start more seeds. For the first time I think I will try and start my tomato plants from seed. New experience and looking forward to it.

Well, time for another cup of coffee then get my laundry started. Would rather sit here and keep on looking at all the plants.

Me, too Rose! Mine are going in the ground, next year! I left one out this winter to see what it'll do. I want mine to be tall, too! 'Course, I didn't get mine till almost June!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

You will in no time Rose Girl! Say, do you mind if we know your first name? Most of us call each other by name in this group.... Linda Kay don't know which is prettier, you or your brug, LOL! What a beautiful plant!! So many blooms still....Wish I hadn't had to cut mine back :(

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I didn't cut mine back, but they sure do take up a lot of room in the living room!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Audrey mine are in the ground.....

My name is Cody.I was wanting to know can you pot brugs that have not rooted yet.Is it better to leave in water or what.

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I just potted some before they rooted, they have leaves starting, on some of them, and roots. I have heard it's better to start the top cuttings in pottingsoil, and don't try to root them in water because they rot easily. I have lost some from rot. Some of the rest of us are more experienced in this, they can tell you more than I can,
BTY, I have a grandson named Cody!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Welcome Cody! Once you get a bloom of your own, you're going to want to change your DG name to TheBrugGirl! lol I'm Bonnie.. I have a grand nephew Cody.. I like it for a girls name too! So pretty.. (just like LK up there ;) I have to ask how big these brugs are that aren't rooted? Are they cuttings? broke off big tree-like brugs?

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Welcome Cody...
The Orchid moss method I find seems to work best....
Then the water/peroxide w/air bubbler...
But some no matter what you do are just plain stubborn...
But mainly if they have the white nubbies you can pot them up...

Coushatta, LA

Cool!Doe41 thank you.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Cody. I see you found the brug addicts. You will like it here. There are people here who know everything there is to know about brugs.

I love popcorn balls, wrigleys Juicy fruit and I do remember the Teabury shuffle.

Linda Kay that is a sweet flower. The pink is so delicate.

Coushatta, LA

Ok Mrs.Jeanne talk to you later.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi Jeanne! Cody, yip, you can pot them up... you live down south, "coos shaw ta" ? How do you say it?

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Bonnie. Must let you know that your cuttings are thriving. I just sent one of the peach versi to my daughter's step mother in Florida. It's rooted and potted and went by car. She will get it Thanksgiving day. She loves plants and this was one of the straightest healthiest ones I had. The others are healthy but smaller. The NOID white you sent has some very big leaves. At the rate these are growing they may outgrow the guestroom. What will I do then? Like Scarlett O'Hara, I'll worry about it tomorrow, for after all, tomorrow is another day(spoken with a syrupy southern accent) Don't anybody take offense. I have a Texas accent. I love the different dialects and accents of this country of ours.

Miss Gargantuan (Cherub Pink) has buds all over her. One is even 2 in long. They seem to grow while I'm looking at them. She was slow to y but she's making up for it now. She is the reason I came to this forum back in Oct.

Coushatta, LA

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi there Cody, welcome to the crazy world of brugsmansias.. all these wonderful brug lovers will help you out with your questions..
Phyllis , that pic is so beautiful of the snow... was almost 60 here today..
Karen.. love your recipes..
I just melt marshmellows, add popcorn, butter my hands and start shaping! LOL
My mom used to put nuts in ours.. I didn't like that too much... The family is already hollering for my toffee..
guess I will have to make up some big batches..to send with them for their own houses and such..*sniff* miss them so much..

Talked to Pauline today from work.. she said she is ready to start cooking LOL... told her I would be over early..
Sis says she really still can't hold a spoon let alone a potato peeler, but I'm not about to burst her bubble.. just wheel her over to the kitchen in her wheel chair and give her a bowl , peeler, and some potatoes.. she always made the giblet gravy.. I guess her daughter is going to learn how this year to make it..

I am now down to one big bubbler tub.. Maya, Pendulus Pink, Pink Beauty, Joyces Monster White, and my Brug from the back yard are all together in there bubbling away..
I have a cassies curls now, and a frosty, ( he was such a tiny little cutting, he about died, but he has new leaves)
betty marshall, charles grimalde, chrissy, flamenco, georgia peach, butterfly, and a shooting star.. hmm.. I think I am missing one.. anyways.. will have a really nice assortment of colours I hope.. oh! a double white! (NOID)

all the sticks are showing new growth( hibiscus, cestrum, lantanas, christmas holly, clerodrum, milkweed, )
I have another seedling popped up... Miss B Havin x Rubiline... my beautiful wax begonia is releafing, oh my I am having such fun.. why I even have three pear tree seedlings from the one and only pear I ate off my pear tree this year!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh.. star asked about my tomatoes rotting? They just don't for some reason.. I have always cold stored them in a wooden fruit crate in the garage.. one time i put them all in a brown paper bag and they ripened too fast without me knowing and molded..
Hi Bonnie! Miss you! Lets' meet again! ;)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Cody...I am only about 45 mins for the state line... welcome again!!
Bonnie.. it's pronounced Cou sha ta... has a lot of gambling places closest to TX.. I ahve never been there though..lol
Audrey so glad to see you posting so much.. you are missed when you are gone
Jeanne.. wtg... mine were putting on buds too, but have dropped most since i brought them in the house... waaa... hope you get to see blooms from yours!!l
Phyllis... I still haven't tried the air bubbler.. i guess i am too old to change and the water/peroxide works fairly well for me

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Debra.. wow sounds like you have a very nice selection of brugs... wow.. most of mine are NOID'S, but that's ok with me..lol You are going to have fun with Pauline tomorrow!!

Coushatta, LA

Thanks.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Becky, I'm trying my best to mimic the outside conditions sans the freezes. She spends the nights in a 50 degree workshop and then comes out first thing in the morning and stays out til sunset. She doesn't seem to notice at all.

If you have a problem with Coushatta, try Natchitoches. It's actually pronounced Nackotish. That's the French for ya.

I love toffee. I love the Heath bar blizzards at Dairy Queen.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Natchitoches is world famous for their meat pies! To die for....

NATCHITOCHES (NAC KA TOSH) MEAT PIES
(Louisiana Specialty)

1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
1 1/2 lbs. ground pork
1 cup green onions, chopped
1 cup onions, chopped fine
1 cup bell pepper, chopped fine (if desired)
1 T. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. coarse red pepper
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/3 cup flour

Crust:
4 cups flour
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
2 eggs
1/2 cup Crisco
1 cup milk

Combine beef and pork, onion and seasonings in a large pot and cook over medium heat, stirring often until meat is no longer pink. Do not overcook the meat. Sift the flour
over meat mixture, stirring until well combined. Remove from heat, drain in a large colander to drain off excess fat. For the crust, sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening. Beat egg and add the milk. Work gradually into dry ingredients until proper consistency to roll. Break into small pieces; roll very thin. Cut into saucer sized rounds. Place a heaping T. of filling on one side of the pastry round. Dampen edge of crust with water, fold over meat and crimp with a fork. Prick pie twice on top with the fork. Fry in deep fat at 350°

The Alabama-Coushatta indian tribe in that area own most all of the casinos in that area. The tribe is interesting, you can go to the reservation and see authentic dancers in costumes and headdresses, the whole works... http://www.alabama-coushatta.com/
