Announcing the 2008 photo contest!

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Jax4ever, I ended up putting the photo in question into the scenic category in part because it was taken at a botanical garden :)

But, I put one in gardens that was taken at a public garden too...

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

pirl....I know that but people that are not too familiar with navigating and where to find things would have a hard time with that. I know because my parents couldn't find it. When it first began there was a link at the top righthand part of the homepage. I thought it should have stayed there.

I only found out through Victor's post above. I agree that it would be nice to have it available on our home page.

Jax4ever, I definitely see your point and sort of agree on hand. But, on the other to say that a photo entered into a contest in garden landscapes has to be or our own garden, is almost to say that our own garden landscape has to be worthy of a landscaping contest. My own garden, even though I think it's pretty in many ways, will likely never be in a state that it is something that I want to enter into a contest. But, that doesn't mean that I can't appreciate and realize a landscape that is beautiful. Most of the photos that I entered of individual plants where taken in my own yard. I don't think that an actual landscape has to be really large, very expensive, or managed by a group to be worthy of a contest, it just has to be artistic in one form or another. Until mole hills, gopher holes, deer bitten plants, elk divits, bear scratched trees and large power lines are considered pretty or artistic my garden will not win any photographer a contest in garden landscaping. But, I can definitely admit that it is much easier to get a decent photo of a landscape in a botanical garden! So, I'll probably never post a picture of my own garden landscape in a contest, but since I do have many flowers or plants that aren't deer bitten or right next to the powerlines I will enter them into their more individual categories! Anyhow, sorry for the speel, but that is I think that the contest might not be restricted to pictures taken just of our own individual gardens.

I guess I agree w/ you, redchic. It's easy to take a bad picture in a botanical garden, too. I guess everyone understands that, when they view the picture, is it the arrangement/quality of the plants that make it a great shot, or is it the photo? This question rose from the fact that I took lots of pictures of the French alps in Chamonix last March. I didn't enter them, b/c you can't take anything less than a breathtaking photo there! I was lucky to have the chance to go and not everyone got a chance to visit Chamonix this year, so I thought it was unfair. If there's a DGer who lives there, they should submit some photos!

I AM GRUMPY b/c of this foolish time change (grumble, grumble)! Even though it is only an hour, it sets me off for days!

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Jax - I think all of the garden landscape winning photos were taken in the DG'ers own gardens. If I remember correctly, there was a thread discussing the photos last year and many expressed the same opinion and probably voted accordingly even if a photo of a botanical garden was technically better.

I can't wait to view all the photos tomorrow!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yep, I agree completely with your photographic morals Jax! As well as about the time change. You would think that I would've been early to work today. Instead, I did turn back my clocks, but forgot to turn the alarm button back on and overslept.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I am agonizing what to submit, it's so hard when you are limited to just 2 per category. I have changed my selections so many times now! I refuse to double check my submissions anymore! LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wouldn't photos taken in botanical gardens or other similar sites or vacations be eligible for the Miscellaneous category? That's where I put the two I liked best from 2008 vacations.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Anything's eligible for the miscallaneous category :-) You could have also put them in garden landscapes or scenic depending on the subject matter.

Santa Fe, NM

Interesting discussion, Jax and Red Chico! D.H. and I have been grumpy today, too. I think a good photo is a good photo and might have more to do with light and luck (in my case) or skill, as in Trois' case, say. I can't wait to see what everyone entered! I had a really hard time going through my pic's and it made me think about getting more organized. Something to do this winter if I'm trapped inside. We have such good photographers here.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

One more sleep + sleep in. I'm so excited I can't stand it!

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

The best part of the contest is soooon!! I'm ready to see every one of your pictures and I don't care if you snuck in the neighbors yard and too a pic of their roses! It took me hours and days to go thru last year! This is one of my favorite fall rituals! Thanks you all for sharing!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Which category would you use for Dahlias?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I'd call them perennials.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

In the A-Z encyclopedia they, dahlias, are called a tuberous rooted perennial. Hmmmm..... not sure if that clears it up or not about whether they would fall into the perennial or tubers and corms category.

good luck to everyone!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Can you put cannas in that catagory? BEV

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I'd say use common sense and make your best judgement--I don't think anyone is going to be going through those categories grading for absolute botanical accuracy. There are many things that could fit in a couple different categories, or that are close but not 100% match for a category so just put it where you think it fits the best.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmmm....Cannas grow from rhyzomes/tibers----so I think they would go in that category.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Hi...
i might have missed it, i've been away awhile, but do we know when on the 3rd the contest will be closed?

thanks...

Almost time to see the pics!!!!

BUT it's going to take FOREVER to decide what's best, I'll bet!

(I waaay overslept this AM, too, and now it is 11:34 PM and I'm not grumpy but ready to party!)

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hey Jax, I agree with you to a point, If its your camera and you took the pic, then its your pic. But it I tend to avoid them and look at real DG photos a bit more. and if there is something that just says pick me.
I wonder If Dave could put in a catagory next year, just for DG gardens, never know what others will like till you show them.
Sorry you where grumpy, I have been messed up all week my clock changed last Sunday LOL I have a smart set alarm clock that change when it suppose to til the Gov. made the change. Not sure if its so smart or not LOL
I have your twin. remember LOL

That's what I was thinking would be a good situation Tilly. Either a different category for photo of DGers 'garden landscapes' or a separate category for botanical garden photos. But, that may start to make things a little more convoluted than necessary.

That cat is cool!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thats miss Sassy and she is proud and fits her name LOL

You are right that could be more of a problem, but maybe if there is a way to title it in a different way, don't know LOL was just a thought.
Maybe Dave can come up with a idea for next year. I like the new one this year that we get to vote on the winners to which month they should go in, didn't have that last year.
So excited can't wait.

Hey Dave, got coffee on and Doughnuts LOL
