Announcing the 2008 photo contest!

Robinson, KS(Zone 5b)

Can anyone advise me on what category hibiscus would fall under?

Looking forward to seeing all of your entries!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Trees and shrubs or Miscellainious I would think. BEV

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Are we there yet?? 12 more sleeps sigh

Robinson, KS(Zone 5b)

Only 12 more? Hang in there dahlianut. ;^)

Thank you Bev, I had wondered about that as I have Rose of Sharon bushes and I also have potted hibiscus that I bring inside during the winter. Wondered if they would be perennials. I don't know what is what....... lol I just know if I like them or not.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Is there any write-up on what should go where? I'm having trouble placing some of my pictures.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

The category's explained most.
What are you having trouble with?
I'm sure someone can help. there is no list per-say.

I just noticed that Dave put a Counter on the Contest Page!
Or
Have I just not noticed the Counter in the Past...
Wouldn't be the first time I missed something!
:-0
LOL

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

What's a counter? Is there an advantage for dahlias involved?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lunch counter? What's Dave serving?

Sorry
I should have been more specific.
There is a counter as to how many photos have been submitted.
LOL...Dahlianut. Tooooo funny

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Let me go through last year and get the pictures I don't know where to put sorted out and then I'll come back and ask for help.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Sounds good zhinu. I'll be sure to send you in the wrong, ahem, right direction. TOTALLY KIDDIN! I'm so luving that everyone is entering. I'm a newbie to the contest but there are lots here who are oldbies who will help zhinu.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I am in my 2nd year, and still having fun with the hole thing.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Where would Ivy on wall go?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Higher?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

snort. Garden landscape perchance? I wonder does Dave shuffle them around if they are misplaced?

Santa Fe, NM

L.O.L., Victor! My first laugh of the day. I'm still puzzled about cactus. Where can I add this thread to my favorites? I guess I could always find one of you all and ask! Guess I just did. I have not finished my tea yet. Brain not working.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's tough to choose a category for many plants. I really believe more categories are needed.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

The cacti were in the Tropicals and Houseplant catagory last year roybird.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

A Dahlia catagory is definitely needed ^_^

Santa Fe, NM

Thanks, Dahlia. I think it might be good to have a category for wild plants but then, I suppose, we'd get in to the "wild or indigenous" discussion. For a photo contest, it might be just as well to avoid that. Aren't dahlias bulbs, by the way? Are day lilies rhizomes? Mine look like a gnarly knot when I have to separate them. They look like alien life-forms.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Dahlias are tubers. Daylilies are actually herbaceous perennials, not in the bulbous clan at all, and not lilys either. The gnarly clumps are very cool looking. If you sing to them they separate easier. Krumping to the the clump works too.

Santa Fe, NM

Second laugh of the day!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm pretty sure the categories have to be limited because otherwise it would be difficult to choose only 12 monthly photos out of, say, 20 category winners for the calendar. (There are 14 categories, but maybe that leaves 1 photo for the front cover and 1 for the back? I do hope a way will be worked out to include a photo taken by Trois, too.)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Surely choosing 12 or 14 out of about 20 is easier than choosing the category winners from all the great entries to begin with!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think it's a tough call cuz I'm sure everyone who won a catagory would want to be in the calendar.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In that case, we should increase the number of months in a year!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Brilliant idea. Chinese calendar: a complete calendar cycle takes 60 years divided into 5 cycles of 12 years and then 12 months in a year. Of course I would be dead before there was another photo contest. bummer. OR we could use the dahlia calender which adds 2 additional time periods in the year: Waking up Time and Tuber Time.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I have seem some calenders that have 4 to 6 photos on each month.
And keeping with end the same theme.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Maybe one year we can do a weekly planner sort of calendar -- 52 photos, plus the cover!

I'm not being entirely facetious... I could definitely use a DG weekly calendar... I generally use a planner a lot more than I do a monthly wall calendar!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Here, here! I'm also a planner fan. 52 catagories. I can just picture my beluved Dahlias in the August or September weeks.
