Announcing the 2008 photo contest!

The leaves are turning color and the air is getting cooler, which can only mean one thing: it must be time for the annual DG photo contest!! :)

This year's format is identical to last year. No obvious photo enhancements allowed, maximum of two photos per person per category. New photos only - don't enter photos you entered in previous DG contests.

The contest is now open for entries.

On November 3rd, 2008, the entries will be closed and voting will begin. Voting will be handled by the membership at large, and how to do that will be explained when voting begins.

On November 17th, the voting will be finished and the winners will be announced!

Last year we made a calendar using most of the first place winners. We'll be doing the same thing this year. The members will help choose which winning photo will be placed on which months.

By submitting photos into the contest, you are consenting to allow me to use the image in our calendar, should that image win first place.

Each year brings us a delightful array of amazing photos and I know this year won't be an exception.

The contest page is here:

Woo Hoo ... Let the fun and photographing begin!

Are dahlia photos for entry in the annual or perennial category?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Probably under bulbs, corms and rhizomes Jax I would think. There should be a dahlia catagory, don't you think? ^_^

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

There SHOULD be a dahlia category! But, it would be unfair to everyone else- you can't take a picture of a dahlia bloom w/o it being the best photo ever taken ;0) IMHO, of course!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

So true jax so very true.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Where can I see photos from last year's contest? I want to see what I'm up against! : )

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

robcorreia - if you click on Extras on the Home tab, scroll down to the bottom, you will see the links for past years' photo contests.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Thank you!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Is there a Fungus category? I have a picture of a mushroom :0)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Probably best under Misc.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LMBO jax. I hope we get answer to your question about where dahlias fit. I want to rally the troops to enter.

Santa Fe, NM

Consider me rallied! Two per category? I'd better read the rules and check my files.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

You go Roybird girl! You have some gooders. I'm going to enter a couple too I think.

Santa Fe, NM

You should! How do we enter? I read the categories and rules but don't really understand the process.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

If you go into the catagory there is an 'Add an Entry' clickie. Inside you attach your photo and give a description.

Wow, After looking at last years photos, It looks like the flower shots better be right up close and in your face! Beautiful shots. I wish I had a camera that had a good macro on it.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

It will let me enter a photo but won't let me view the other entries. Help BEV

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

You can't view the other entries until "November 3rd, 2008, the entries will be closed and voting will begin."
It wouldn't be fair.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Should the files be any particular size for uploading? This is fun!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

This is always such a fun thing - thanks dave :)

Can't wait to see all the photos!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Thank you sue. I should have rememberd that DUH> BEV

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Same size you submit to PlantFiles, I downsize mine anywhere from 600 to 800 pixels which is still quite large. DG has automatic resizing if too big. You can see the previous year examples.

A tip: don't upload images with those awful distracting time stamps. :-(
You can crop those out if it's on an image you want to use.

Thanks syrumani for the tip on viewing the pics from past contests. WOW there are some great photographers and luvly content. I'm trying not to be intimidated and I'm going to enter although I probably won't vote for myself LOL. I'm a newbie. How does the voting work? Thanks.

(Zone 7b)

Can i use photos that i have already posted before on the photo forum??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think you can use anything that you haven't entered in a previous contest no matter what forum you posted them on. I'm hoping an Admin. will check in and answer our questions. I'm also wondering if you can enter the same pic in 2 different catagories?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

If you go to the contest page, where it's talking about new photos it says ones that haven't been entered in previous DG contests. So it doesn't matter if you've posted it in a forum, Plant Files, etc as long as you didn't enter it in a previous year's contest. On entering a pic in multiple categories I don't think there's a specific rule, but if I remember right last year the guidance was that you were only supposed to enter a picture once, so if it could fit into two different categories you need to pick the one you think is the best fit. I might be remembering that wrong though.

(Zone 7b)

I just looked at the 2007 winners and i don't think i even come close to the beauty in those picture's i was like WOW!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks ecrane for the info. I hear ya Harmonyplace but I think everyone should participate if they have a pic they really would luv to share. I think it's just not about the photographic talent but about beauty and what it means to you. There have been alot of winners in the past that just captured a special moment in their garden. Remember, as far as I understand, it the members pick the winners.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

You never know what sort of pictures people are going to vote for, often it's probably not the same pictures that a professional photographer might choose as the winners. Also it's fun to look at everyone's pictures, I know I always enjoy all the pictures even the ones I don't vote for, so don't be intimidated thinking you need to be a pro photographer to enter. I'm sure people would love to see your pictures, and to me at least a big part of the contest is sharing and enjoying each other's pics.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ditto to ecrane3. This is a great opportunity to share cross region and I think we all luv pics.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Can someone link me to the previous contests? I can't find them! Thanks~
