How did you pick your name?

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

I read all the posts here and didn't see mine (I HOPE I didn't miss it)...so here goes. My sister has told me for several years that I am always "planting seeds"....spiritually that is. I figured the user name Seedsower could cover two bases at one time....my planting of spiritual seeds, as well as my love for gardening and the fact that I start most of my garden plants from seed!

That's really lovely Sandy!

Bumped for Persevere

I wanted to see how several people chose their names, so came here. While I am here, I might as well say how I chose mine. I chose Persevere1 because first of all, it is my password for another site, a site where you have to add at least one number to the password, so that is why the 1 got there. But there's another reason the 1 is there.

To persevere in this life is just about the most important thing one can do. Joys come and go, sorrows appear, sometimes life appears to give us insurmountable challenges... but with the help of God and also of our loved ones and ourselves, we can and must PERSEVERE. The ancient Chinese often said, "Perseverance furthers." One needs it so often. One starts a project. It begins well, but there comes a point where it seems to be more grunt work than fun. Then one must persevere. One must persevere in one's work, in one's marriage, and in life in general. That's another reason for the #1---to keep it in my mind that perseverance is of number 1 importance in life. I have also persevered, with the help of God, in beating two supposedly "incurable" illnesses.

Thanks, Stownes! and thanks, Andy!

So I have an question about ettiquete (or to use a word I can
spell - manners): is it impolite to use someone's real name
if you know it or is that kind of being too "insiderish" to folks
who may also be on the thread but not know the person's name?

Its easy with me - I just used my own name. (Except I'm too lazy
to type all those letters so ususally just sign it "Tam".)

I generally use their nick if they are not signing their actual name. Seems safe that way. I don't think anyone will get particularly upset either way, since one is only using the first name, not telling anyone the last name, address, or phone number! :+)) But considerate of you to ask, anyway. Can't make a mistake being overly considerate!

Crossville, TN

I sign all my posts...and that should mean that everyone is welcome to use my real name...JO

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

That's what I figure too. Though if you do sign your real name, I'll generally use whichever one is shorter.

somewhere, PA

Thanks guys! I'll follow that too - sometimes I know person's name and it seems
rude not to use it but if they don't sign it after their post, other folks might not know
who I am addressing. (OK - I worry about still stuff on occasion. LOL)

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Boy, this is an oldie, but I'm glad I finally found it. I don't even attempt to read all the posts anymore. I have wondered about so many names here.

I got my name fairly simply, before I discovered brugs, one of my favorite flowers was (is) the Gumpo Azalea. This variety blooms later than most, I was sort of a late bloomer myself, lol. I tried using Gumpo once, but people called me "Grumpy", so I just went with Azalea.

Oh, this is the best thread! So glad it was brought back to life. I've wondered about many of the names that have been explained.
Mine is probably pretty self-explanatory. I absolutely love to watch rain fall - thus RainGazer. There's nothing more relaxing to me than watching a lovely rainshower. I love to hear thunder roll, too, but ThunderListener just didn't have quite the same ring to it. LOL

I agree - very cool thread!!!

Anitabryk2 = I need a break too!!

Just a play on words using my real name, Anita!

i found dg shortly after moving from the florida keys up to central florida. one of the first things we had to buy were alot of door mats because we were tracking sand into the house so much! i think if i stayed in the keys my name would have been coralrocker! debi

Great thread.... mine came from a friend who sits with his head in my lap. An abandoned dog with a bad limp. We took him in and called him ~ what else ~ Tripod shortened to Pod and then Podster. He adores us and we love him. The picture is Pod in front with his buddy Ralphster. I also like seed pods so I thought Why not. I also use the alias ~ Kristi.

Wow, Ive finally reached the end! Great thread!
I love the fragrant plants and my fav is Nicotiana Heaven Scent as well as several other Nicotiana but heaven scent is a stand out in my garden. Someone else must have had the same name at one time I had to change the spelling but It was the only choice.

Brookline, MA(Zone 6a)

This is a question that I'm always happy that "someone asked!" :-)

My name is a combination of my two dogs' names, Brownie and Hannah. Both are former shelter dogs.

They're truly wonderful "beastlets" and although both are well trained, Brownie and Hannah sometimes have problems training the humans in this house!

This thread is so enjoyable.

pirl is in honor of my neighbor, in my former home, for 28 years who taught me gardening: Pauline Isabelle Reid Loeffler 10/14/1900 - 3/01/03. She'll always be the real PIRL while I remain the imitation, hence the lower case. I still miss her.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

oh arlene, you brought a tear to my eye. was she really 103? wow. by the way, you are no imitation. you are the real thing in my book, every day of the year! debi

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Arlene - that is quite an honor you bestow on your friend. I am sure she smiles down on you whenever you are in your beatiful garden!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Debi and Anita: "Mrs. Loeffler", as I always called her, still retained her southern charm, and voice, right to the end. She was born in Albemarle, NC and we did get to see her home town on a trip, years ago, and I took photos and sent them to her. She was gardening at 88 when arthritis left her unable to get up. She did, of course, but never could kneel again to garden. That never stopped her. Her only child, a divorced man of retirement age, came to live with her but a few years later, due to the arthritis had no choice but to put her in a nursing home, where he visited her every day and still took her to church every Sunday. As things happen so strangely, I called and said I'd agree to talk at her memorial service and her son, Albert, and I talked for about an hour. I had known him many years, as you'd expect. The night before the service he fell and they all thought he just hit his head but was put in the hospital and died 25 days after his mother. I ended up, very nervously, giving the entire eulogy. It was the least I could do to let the people in the church know how much I cared about her and loved her. She spent many a Mother's Day and Christmas Day with us as her daughter-in-law didn't appreciate her. She even came to my wedding 1/1/91 when I married the love of my life, Jack. She had Albert drive her out many times and loved the garden. For the Garden Tour of 1998 each of the seven people on the tour had to do a little write up about their gardens and I wrote about Mrs. Loeffler. In the guest book one person wrote how touched they were and Mrs. Loeffler, herself, was sent a copy and called me to say that when she read it, "I shed a tear". To hear it in her voice was so special. So was she.

Gosh a long one here, read the first few but REALLY have to put in a comment first re MSJen. Ms is generally not a Miss, nor a Mrs, and after my divorce I had no intention of calling myself Mrs OR Miss, as I was technically neither, and as men do not state in THEIR title whether or not they are married, I saw not a single reason as to why I should. This is where Ms comes in. After all, does ANYONE refer to an unmarried male adult as Master? A definite UNFAIR advantage here, and I saw it as a long ago attempt at male domination to keep their woman where they wanted them, and to do what they wanted as well. That said, now my reason for my name,

I signed up for ebay some time ago, and started with JanJan, as that is what my partner sometimes called me (name is Janet). Imagine the insult as to who I was when it said that was already taken, but the suggestions were that I could have JanJan1 07, JanJan1 09 etc., no! I was not going to be another in a long line of JanJans, I after all like everyone else am unique.

I had this mental block, oh heck now what do I do. When that happens I just relax and let it come to me. Into my mind flashed Kangy1, after all if President Bush could have Airforce1, then I as an Australian could have Kangy1. I could imagine myself coming in with a bouncy landing, but full of spring. After all, you have to be President to have a smooth landing.

So, after umpteen other user names for every site you had to have one for, and would never remember without the 'email reminder', I needed one that I would remember for DG.

In a flash once again, it came to me, the other 'version' of a kangaroo, Wallaby1!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I like it! Just so you know - any plane the President in power is on becomes Air Force 1 but the one that's like a second home is a slice of heaven in the air. No, I haven't been on it but have seen many photos of it.

West Portsmouth, OH(Zone 6a)

This is so great. I've always wondered what was behind some of these user names. It's so interesting. I use Rikkashay after my cat. She didn't play like a normal kitten, you'd have thought she was on catnip all the time. She bounced off the walls!

Not real creative here...initials dmj and birthday 12/18.

but dmj, your subtle sense of humour comes through!

What a fun thread! It has taken several days to go back and read the "whole" thing, and needless to say, I don't feel very creative. My name - first initial and last name :-) At least I can remember it!

I chose Grayse2 because this is my cats name, she's no. 1, I'm #2, and I wouldn't forget it. Not too creative, but practical for my "short memory" sometimes. My real name is Wendie.

For many years I have used a pseudonym (alias?) J Rocco Mozzarella. Don't ask why! On Dave's garden I just became Rocco. No criminality involved, no broken kneecaps or anything like that!

I grew up being short, chubby and named Wendy. I was always described as "cute". I didn't want to be cute. I wanted to be tall and willowy and named Gwendolen. Never had the nerve to change it, though. Maybe I realized I just am not Gwendolen material.

So when I found DG, I thought about Gwendolen, but I still felt like it was lying to people. Then I thought about Willow, but settled on Ivy. It's still a pretty name, making you think of green eyes, sort of fairy-like. I added the one, because I figured there would already be an Ivy, and also it was truthful, 'cause I am always out in the garden, cutting back the Ivy on the side of our house.

What a neat idea loved reading about everyones ID! Mine is pretty simple I am addicted to gardening period!!! I had a lovely garden for 10 years at my previous home basically a test garden. I did not incorporate many annuals in the design. When I started a new garden at my new home using differnent garden designs and plant materials included more annuals .Garden #2 came about and is going to be low maintenance and colorful, thanks to lessons I learned from garden# 1.

My elderly neighbor greets me at the fence between our yards, he usually won't say hello, he just holds out his thumbs to me so I will rub my "2 green thumbs off on him", dirt and all. He smiles at me when I tell him the secret to my garden.

Hey everybody, I am glad to see this thread it is a good way to start as today is my first day here.

I have been Joule for a very long time, I got it from a TA in one of my chem classes. I couldn't sit still and since Joule is a measurement of energy it became my name. I have used Joule in every online community I have participated in.

You can also call me Cindy, I am a transplanted Southern Californian living in central SC.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi Joule (Cindy) welcome to DG you will love it. I love how you picked your name. Very unique.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Welcome Joule! Glad to have you here with us. Enjoy!
