what have you bought so far? part 2

Philipsburg, PA(Zone 5b)

I've got a couple of bunnies and a whole family of deer. I love hosta, but I've pretty much given up on keeping them. Hosta= gourmet deer salad at my place. I also get a huge flock of wild turkeys (30-80 birds) twice a day most days, but they are mostly interested in bugs and the neighbor's corn. I wish they'd eat Japanese Beetles! Between the deer and the beetles there are times I despair of ever having a rose blossom.

ngam - Blood Meal should repel them and though I've read that it should be applied again after every rain I just couldn't keep up with that and one dose does it. You could also sprinkle hot peppers (like the jug at the pizza place) and that should keep them away.

Windbalm - can you imagine how popular the pet would be if we could find one that loved slugs, earwigs and JB's? Heavenly!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Pirl, I have used the hot pepper years ago for the Bambi crowd. I now use DeerVik which has also changed to a mostly ground garlic creamy substance that resembles peanut butter. I was not used to putting it down low for little eating machines just these guys, see pic. It seems to work pretty well and lasts a long time. I dip those bamboo garden stakes, the skinny cheap ones, into it and put them around plants and shrubs they like to eat. Actually have not had a hosta totally eaten since I have been using it.

Whatever works is worth it.

Ugh, I've been put on a buying freeze. My hubby is quitting his full time job next week and is going to work for us. So until our income is steady I can buy anything!!
Good thing I placed some orders last year that I'll be getting this spring. And I do have some seeds to plant this pring, I do have to split some hostas and daylilies, I guess it won't be that bad after all.
Hubby says he doesn't care if the whole yard is brown....everyone.... gasp in horror!!!!!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I did! I gasped very loud as a matter of fact!!

We have no deer, no rabbits, & very few squirrels--what we do have are lots of coyotes &, last summer, diving into the dam property next to the road, a bobcat. We also have had bears on 2 occasions. Now a friend on the other side of town, reports she and the car behind her, almost hit a wolf--insists it's NOT a coyote, which they see all the time. She called State Wildlife--they told her no wolves in state, but that they had received other complaints--of course, they said that about the cougar in NW Corner of state, but many sightings up there. Went to Walmarts today--they had plenty of things out--seeds, DLs, & Hostas--I did not buy any! Must dig out lots of stuff before I plant this year's order. I am a nut about phlox, and am thinking of getting Dusterloe?spelling? a bright mulberry purple--anyone have this?

I'm gasping, Jen, but hoping it works out for the best.

I remember the first year at the house here...the season prior to moving in, I did the whole "lasagna" thing for a veggie garden, which measured a mere 40'x40'. I plotted, and planned, and ordered. I bought row covers, and biodegradable mulch. I bought red mulch for the tomatoes. I bought green sand, and other natural soil ammendments. I did everything by the book. I planted 4 rows, about 10' long, and about 1 1/2' wide, and planted all sorts of lettuce. Due to the rabbit population, and the Beaver notailus that inhabit the area around me, a friend and I, bought sheets of metal mesh and formed "U"s with them, to place over the lettuce...
I came home from work, checked the garden...EVERY, EVERY last lettuce, either head, leaf, was gone. Holes were dug under the mesh to get at them. Nothing else was bothered. That was one of the years I almost broke my ankle by stepping into a Beaver notailus hole.
So, I bought the traps for Thumper and his/her friend. I already told you what I did about the Beaver notailus problem...their demise I won't repeat.
Some of those echies aren't cheap...I know I have almost all of the Sundown, Sunup, Sungoingaway, Moonglow...(lol...can't remember all of their names)...and some of them were almost $20 a piece. If something ate mine...I would turn into Granny from the Beverly Hill Billies, and be "out therr shootin up those varmints"

But, on a lighter note...
I have more elephant ears coming. woohoo.

I do enjoy your ever optimistic spirit.

We have a bunny or bunnies (now that the cat has been deported due to DD#2's asthma) but so far, they're cute - but I haven't tried to grow anything I or anything else would want to eat. (Maybe they could eat some of the dandelions or crabgrass?) I've been hoping to get my family to eat more veggies - maybe I won't start with lettuce. Would that help?

Thankfully my echinaceas weren't the expensive kind although I had nurtured the purple from seed all spring. The whites were six plants I got as a bonus from Wayside (and I was really excited about them, until they turned into tiny stumps!) Ah, well, I have some more seed, and yes, hope does spring eternal! Maybe if I put them right next to the foundation....?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Does only plants count on what I have got for this coming spring???

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Your getting your Mantis Rototiller aren't you Kassia? LOL I know how much you've been looking at them and wanting one!!

Winnetka, IL

You know, I'm not much into Echinacea, but 'Green Envy' is on my list......

amethystsm- what Dahlia is that! Like I need to add to my spring planting list : )

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

it's a Starsister series, sold as an annual. It only got to about 12" for me, but it was a rescue/clearance plant in mid-summer for $1.99. It didn't bloom until October - i didn't think it ever would.
Pretty, aren't they!

Rescue- LOL!
Sep/Oct is my favorite time to buy, as my local nursery has a $1.99 table of perfectly fine perennials that most people think are dead. Mwaaahaaahaaa!

I'm going to start a new thread...not to continue this, but, I am flustered, and a little ticked off...and not sure exactly how I should go about this...I'll explain in the thread I'm going to start.

Victor, I got a package in the mail, from an order...which is going to be explained further in the thread I will start. I will email or dmail you the pics if you want them...not sure if it's to late or not.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Thom, but it's already set. I appreciate the offer.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I thank everyone who went to my thread...it was, lol...since I'm always thinking of new things: Hems Annoyed. Clever?

All things are good for those who didn't/haven't read it yet. Phew.

Now I can get back to ordering...lol

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Just received my seeds from AHS. Mostly annual flowers - cleome, cosmos, lavatera, helianthus, castor bean and some spinach.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I just won 2 more on the Lily Auction...lol.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

y'all are crazy!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thom, I believe your hooked! The LA is a dangerous place, I know i've been there a few times.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thom - stay away from the computer!!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I have to pat myself on the back last night, I was on the LA, and I was staring at all of these new and newer intros...and was about to bid on....um....6 of them...lol...when I realized: I need my car inspected, I need brakes on the same vehicle, my nephews bday party is this Sunday, my mothers birthday is tomorrow...so...I didn't...I gained control of my senses...if only temporarily.

lol.

Who knows what next week will bring...

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I am so proud of your show of self-restraint, Thom. I know it wasn't easy. But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. :-)

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

You know what they say...the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. That's what they say, I'm not sure I buy into it . LOL

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

good for you Thom... remember that it's only a gorgeous plant and you can get it few days from now... you need the car so you carry more plants... and come to RU's!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thom - you'll know your addiction is bad when your birthday gift to your nephew is a plant in your garden with his name on it or when you tell your mom that you knew she'd say she doesn't want anything, just for you to be happy, so you bought a dozen roses for your garden in her honor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought about this thread many times while writing today's article!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That is one terrific article, Victor. I wish every writer had your talent.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thank you, Pirl! It was fun to write. Wish I had a video camera for the tree beating.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's okay, Victor. I'm from the generation that started with evenings sitting by the radio so my imagination is quite vivid.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

More fun that way anyway.

Where is this article? Ditzy can't find it........

I think I found it.... Victor says: and even gently caressed it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

More confessions.... I bought:
Daylilies....'Harbor Gate', 'Siloam French Lace', and 'Royal Palace Prince" from Oakes.

I am wide eyed.
