Allison, if nobody else wants them, I'll give them a decent home, they'll have other FMN to play with etc. They're supposed to be a reseeding annual but mine always seem to forget to reseed, ha ha.
x, Carrie
what have you bought so far? part 2
Pirl, did you notice in the Ensata catalogue that they have 100 LESS cultivars this year. And here's something that really ticked me off. The pictures in the catalogue, the same pictures, that last year looked blue, now look purple. One I was going to order, based on the picture looking white rimmed in blue, now doesn't look nearly as appealing.
I didn't get to give it a good look, Polly. Mainly I saw the cover and inside cover but many that I bought from them are no longer in their listings. Some prices seem much higher, too.
If you have your last years catalogue, look at Tideline, and compare to this year. And at the end of the JI list it says they have 239 varieties to choose from, last year 334. I wonder what's going on?
you got it Carrie
Thx, Allison!
...there I was, just sliding through the end of February thinking about the soon return of Springtime to "Narnia", and I happened upon this thread & saw "Ensata".
The next thing I know, the wallet jumped out of the purse, ran across the floor past the dogs, out popped the MasterCard, danced on the keyboard, pointed to the various pictures, exclaiming, "Look at that one! Gotta have 3! OOOOOOh, hurry - go to the next page! There's more! and they're soooooo pretty!"
If this happens to you, don't bother with logic & reason - the credit card is a flat, rectangular Lawyer - and it will win the argument...
They are much more than eye candy, aren't they?
Katye...that is exactly what happened to me. I went to Greywood also, and, well, I'm ordering one of their JI's from Ensata.
I can't remember all of the companies that I've ordered from. I know Terretorial I'm getting plants and seeds...I can't even remember all of the seeds, there was about 1 page worths. Plants, I believe is 11 or 12 from them...but it's all veggie seeds. I'm hoping they live up to their hype; this will be my first time ordering from them.
Yes, I am going to take the plunge into ordering some of the species...so, if you have any that you are willing to divide/part with let me know. I may have some to either trade, or will have some to trade next year. I picked up a bunch of DL's last year at a "end of season" sale...which are way more evil than Ensata's JI's...I see the sale and drool...it's like a full moon to a lyconthropic beast (sp?)...lol. I know I have 4 or 5 small clumps of H. 'Primal Scream' that I will be willing to trade...and I believe H. 'Clothed in Glory'. It might be a stretch but also, H. 'Moonlit Masquerade' and 'Night Embers' should be able to be divided this year also. Let me know though. I definitely want H. fulva...there is a Japanese sounding one that I'm not about to try and type here...citrusesque in colors...that's another 'want.'
For the iris people, I have 2 or 3 un named Iris I can/will trade...need to wait until they bloom before I can even describe them. I rescued them from my parents house, before they used 'Round Up' on them.
And, for anyone that needs/wants any of the spiderwarts...let me know...I have several clumps that need to vacate the premises...they really REALLY love where they are at, and need to be rehomed...lol.
No...it's on to update my Naylor Creek order, and put in my maiden order to Forest Farm.
LOL hard to think of you as a maiden orderer, Thom, I think your CC # is pretty well memorized by now. That, by the way, is when you can tell you've got it really badly, when you've memorized all 16 + the extra ones of your CC #, it's wa-a-a-ay more important than your SS#! (Friendly chuckle, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you.)
xx, Carrie
Thom,
Might you be speaking to me about the daylilies? I don't have fulva, but you might be able to twist my arm to part with some of the species for some of your irises.
Pirl,
Your picture is absolutely much nicer.
Thanks, Polly.
I just came from here. South Acre Farm Northfield MA. It shows some pictures of gardens. The regional winners receives $500. It will show pics of 2007. I know this place as the person who turns me on to the GH told me the name. You can buy flats, case of PLUGS. I belive this is the place where you can break up cases of plugs if you don't need that many. I guess you have to be a member online. Memory tells me you can go there and buy cases and flats. I belive they even have trees.
You check out the info..........

Sorry Polly, but yes I was addressing you in regard to the DL's. I will take pics of them when they bloom. I believe they are GBI's. And the one has 3 different colors, the petals going up, one color, the falls another, and the beard another. I get all of the Iris parts mixed up.
Carrie...not only do I have my CC memorized, I have my debit card number memorized...and the security numbers on the back, have them memorized also...Paul laughs at me, when I want to check my balance over the phone (to my check card/checking account) I also have my check routing number memorized (I have 2 checking accounts with the same bank). It's terrible.
And those evil evil people at Logee's sent me yet another catalog today...crap...
I'm getting my H. fulva and H. falva mixed up...oye. If you have any H. fulva, please, please keep them....it's H. falva that I want. H. fulva, is the one commonly called the "Ditch Lily." I've found that it takes years to remove them, or atleast, someone that has a Bobcat to remove them...lol.
Hemhostaholic,
I'd love to trade you for spiderworts and/or iris. Check my tradelist if you'd like. We aren't all that far away from each other, so we might actually be able to meet. Ever go to Williamsport for a day? My folks live up near Towanda, PA, and they meet me in Williamsport on occasion.
Thom,
I don't have a clue what h falva is? Are you talking about the lemon lilies? Don't worry, I won't send you the ditch lilies, you're not my worst enemy (yet), LOL.
I have species:
citrina, minor, middendorfii, hakenuensis (sp?) clone 2---as opposed to clone 1 or 3 I guess, coreana, dumortieri and lilioasphodelus, and multiflora.

Ok Polly, one of each! lol.
H. falva...just looked at the Olallie web site, it looks like one of the "yellow" DL's. Not sure though. Any and all will be fine, I've got a whole back yard that needs to be ungrassed, and perennial planted. I plan on not mowing this year at all if I can help it.
And when I say no grass, I mean that in the most literal of ways.
Wind-If there are any nurseries in the Wport area, I will gladly meet you there...lol...I'm drawn to nurseries, it's horrible.
I so need to buckle down and do the photo journal of my garden with names/hybridizers, etc...that is going to be number 5 on my big list of projects this summer/fall.
I tend to send big clumps when I divide or trade DL's, or I try to. I get so confused when looking at that huge root system...so I spray the roots down, and wash, and spray, and wash, until there is no dirt left, then I try and use either a large knife, or a spade to divide where I think it best...not sure if anyone else has this problem or not? I actually feel guilty...almost like I'm going to hurt the plants. I sent a large group of H. 'Always Afternoon' at the RU last year, and, after I realized how many clumps I had, I felt a little less guilty. I bought 'Always Afternoon' about 4 years ago,in a 1gal container...and was able to divide it twice. First time, I got about 5 divisions, this last time, I think I had upwards of about 20 or so. Any DL that has Stella attatched to it, does the same thing.
i had this weird dream last night that i looked outside, and my back "yard," which was much bigger and nicer than it is in reality, was filled with all these GIANT burgundy and white irises. On stems 3' - 6' tall! There were purple ones too, but smaller.
In the dream i was talking to my mom on the phone, and i basically hung up on her so i could go take pictures of the irises before dark. But when i did, there were worms (?) crawling up the leaves, and i knew that the irises were doomed.
i hold y'all responsible for this.
(color combination of the 6' irises, minus the yellow:)
Amy, to make the dreams go away you need to get yourself some Iris's!
LOL Amy that is funny. Started out nice at least. I agree the only way to cure this is get iris like Pix says. :)
I have to divide ten clumps of Stella d' DLs this spring. I may get DH to do the wackin' apart bit if it is too tough to get through. I am hoping to put them all on the end of the new shrub border nearest the road. I need something rugged down there and I think these will fit the bill for a large swarth of color..
My friend, who is only about 20 minutes sw of me, told me he has iris stalks up over a foot already!
ngam - just use a strong knife and slice those daylilies before you lift them. It's so much easier and simple to then dig and replant them. You can cut them like a pie into as many sections as you want/need.
Just Not fair Victor!!!!! I have a foot of snow! the only things I can see with some green are my roses inside the garage... yep, the silly things are slowly awaking!
Oh thanks for the suggestion Pirl, I have never tried dividing that way. I do have a big lethal knife I could use. Easier is good , I like easier.
I have just added to Garden Crossings order, AGAIN. Too many gloomy days, but that is it no more...really.
This is the list of additions: phlox 'Nicky',geranium 'Rozanne', asclepias 'Cinderella',and scabiosa 'UltraViolet'. Also getting five different echinacea and two shrubs. Good thing it's almost spring.
Which shrubs, ngam? I love Rozanne.
Which echinacea did you order?? Inquiring minds want to know!
Here is the whole list Victor. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4474645
Pixie the list of coneflowers: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4541310
I liked Pink DD a lot last year. We'll see how it returns.
Thanks for the list ngam, I too bought 'Tikki Torch' and my green one is called "Green Jewel". I wonder how much alike it will be to 'Green Envy" or if they will be totally different. We'll have to compare notes next summer/fall.
I had 'Razzamatazz', I think that was the name, any way it was a really nice flower, quite tall but didn't seem very vigorous and after a couple of years just disappeared. I am hoping this double pink one will be better, it is good to know yours did well last year. The "white" double 'Coconut Lime' seems very strong and I am waiting to see how that one comes back.
Pixie I am anxious to see TT and that green one you are getting too. It could be on the list for next year. Of course I have no idea where I would stick it in. LOL
I've found the Echinaceas do better with less water rather than more.
Deer ate every scrap of my echinaceas last season. Purple standard and a white variety too. I thought they weren't supposed to like coneflowers, but they nibbled them right down to nothing like they were haute cuisine.
Rats! I hate the deer anyhow so you have my sympathy.
When I bought my property, there was a 3'x3' patch of Echinacea at the bottom of the property. Clay, neutral soil, that goes from waterlogged to bone dry throughout the summer. It was right next to a big clump of Ligularia, if that gives you a sense of how wet it gets. It was also right next to a big patch of Lythrum (which I love, but ripped out immediately). I guess deer prefer Lythrum, because they didn't even pause by the Echinacea, but certainly loved the Lythrum.
Just when you think you've outsmarted those things, they go and change their culinary interests on you!
They made one visit here and ate every tulip and part of just one hosta. It is so annoying!
This year I'll cut the tulips when I can begin to see the color showing. I have to try to beat them to my own flowers.
I didn't have deer eat them but the monster bunny munched on the nice new tender leaves of Ruby Giant and the new one Coconut Lime. Put chicken wire around until they got some growth and he left them alone after that. We had not seen a bunny around here for twenty years. Hawks you see. Then two years ago there was a million of the little demons. Last year I only saw one. Hawks you see. This year I hope we will have zero again. Hawks you see. :) Here's the little monster.
