what have you bought so far? part 2

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Wow - and to think, i agonize over whether a plant costs $3 or $5.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The most expensive daylilies have been my biggest disappointments so don't despair, Amy. I really prefer the oldies more than ever.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And I love $2.50 bottles of wine. You get much better headaches from them...

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

hahaha - it's kind of a joke here that i only like cheap champagne. Like the André pink kind.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You have to provide the bubbles?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

One of the LA sellers has lots of different Hosta's for sale besides DL's. While browsing thru the list I realized it is a lady i've been buying daylilies from, on ebay for years. She just changed her user name for the L.A. but same quality of plants! Woo-hoo!!
This is her home page: http://blossominggardens.com/
This is her new name on L.A. "Pondsidegardens" , i've never gotten anything but spectacular service and plants from her.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Pirl-I hope this doesn't happen to me :-( The DL's that I would like to "play" around with are the newer ones with the "sharks tooth" edging...but, alas, even I can't bring myself to pay that kind of money for them...I want to...but for the price of one of them, I can buy 3-10 of the others that I really like...lol.

I have to stop clicking on these hyperlinks...lol.

Victor, there is a town near me, about 10minutes away, give or take, called Jessup. It is very high in Italian immigrants, and the sale of "basement" wine is HUGE. If you want me to, I can purchase a bottle of wine for you and have it mailed off. Not to get to off topic, but, homemade items sometimes are better than store bought....

Amy-it's my problem...lol...I used to agonize over the price of stuff, and it can down to the "should I deny myself, and settle, or splurge and be content" argument...sort of Ally McBeal argument in my head. Needless to say, the "splurge and be content usually wins out." If spending a certain amount on a particular plant/tree had ever been a consideration, I probably wouldn't have any of my JM's, nor a nice little patch of Later Slipper Orchids (Cyprimedium...sp?) Although, it did take me about 2 years to order and actually purchase H. 'Primal Scream' from Oakes....it was one I kept circling in my "wish list"...which I think most of us do...maybe? lol.

Paul informed me that I need to stay away from the LA...he saw me looking, drooling, describing everything in glee...then he threatened to take my computer priviledges away...lol.

Done for a little bit...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha ha - thanks Thom. I was just joking.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Okay - here's how it looks on the computer: http://www.mariettagardens.com/Catalog/C/Chocolate_Cherry_Dreams.html

and here's the reality of it in my garden. This was a $50.00 plant! I did give it a negative on Plant Files.

Who wouldn't be disappointed?

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Um...since I try to be optimistic...your clump of Sedum 'Angelina' is really pretty!!! It shows off the pollen really nicely!

I don't want to really say anything negative about another shopping experience I had, but, I wanted to have a whole bunch of DL's, they didn't necessarily need to be new varieties, just different varieties. I purchased almost $60 worth from Gilbert H. Wild & Sons...I'll leave it at that.

I'll find out this year if they come up with buds atleast, and if they are the colors that they are supposed to be. I purchased from them 3 years ago, so, this will be their official 3rd season. 1st year, NADA....2nd year, lots of growth, and one gaingly arse looking bloom. So, I will find out what I got growing from them this year.

Pirl...I know all to well the disappointment in buying something not cheap, and having it do nothing, or not live up to your expectiations.

Last year, I fell in love with the Jacob's Ladders...(Polemonium...sp?) I purchased 'Fire and Ice' and 'Stairway to Heaven'....they looked great in their pots...got them home, planted them in moist, not damp, good draining soil, under a Youngs Weeping Birch...they all melted...all 4 of them. And of course, I threw out my receipts so I couldn't bring them back for a credit from the nursery I bought them from...but they were about $20 a piece...no more Jacob's Ladders.

It's killing me not visiting the LA site...but....I can look but not buy, right?

lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My daylily life began with Wild's and, just like yours, nothing the first year, a few blooms the second year but the third year was so much better and then they really took off. I only wish all my daylilies behaved as well as the Wild's did. Here's just a small portion of them:

Hey, I like that André pink champage.

I promised myself I would start spending more time on my 'home' forum. Because I miss you guys.

I tried to read thru this whole thread, but it was starting to make me want to spend more (which I don't have), so I'll just tell you why I'm broke.

I found co-ops. I was always a little leary, but a couple of them have been run by friends so I couldn't resist. The first was just tall phlox...simple enough and I don't have any. My great-grandmother grew them and she died when I was 5. That's one of the few things I remember about her. So, I ordered 18 phlox (David, Bright Eyes, Blue Paradise & Starfire) Totally reasonable at the co-op price.

Then the perennial co-op. Just plugs so very inexpensive. Lots of heuchera. I never liked them because the ones I have are blah. But how can you look at the catalogs and not want them? Well, DH wanted them bad! So I ordered 3 each of 4 different ones (Pewter Veil, Midnight Rose, Encore & Tira Misu). But they also had some pretty Verbascum cheap, so 10 of those (Dark Eyes & Sugar Plum). And a couple of Japanese ferns (Pictum & Burgundy Lace). But as the co-op progressed it looked like some things would have to be dropped...couldn't have that. So I added some more verbascum and heuchera. also a few Cyclamen 'Something Magic' and Polemonium 'Touch of Class'. spent twice as much as I intended, but nothing got dropped :0)

gee, co-ops are great! so I ordered a whole case of cow pots and 15 lbs of watersorb crystals (because I am terrible about watering my plants)

now this wouldn't be so bad, but these are, of course, not the only perennials I have coming. I HAD to have some of the new coneflowers. I restrained myself last year. So ordered from GC are 'Pink Double Delight', 'Green Envy', 'Coconut Lime' and 'Tiki Torch'. and while I was there I added Sambucus 'Black Lace', Hydrangea 'White Dome', Weigela 'My Monet' and Oregano 'Kent Beauty'.

I won't list the roses, but I have ordered 30 new ones. Errr, make that 31, I just added to one of my orders a couple days ago.

And so far I have winter sowed 72 containers of perennials and started a few annuals inside (petunias, geraniums & coleus).

I know I am certifiable. There is no way possible I can plant all this stuff. I made a deal with my youngest DGD to come and help and bring a friend (for pay). She said she didn't want money. But I told her the only way I can get her away from her grandfather is to pay her to work. Otherwise he'll spend the whole time she's here playing games and watching movies with her. She's 14 (or she will be in May)

there...aren't you glad I'm back LOL

Thomaston, CT

Thanks so much for the info, Pix, Thom, & Pirl---those sites were very tempting! I've spotted so many DL's that I need--however, I bought a large amount from VT last fall, & I really need to see what I have--I should have written down varieties & color, but I was probably trying to get rid of them quickly, so Doug would not notice them! The same for iris I purchased from Commanche Acres--I can't even remember where I planted those! That's the problem with age! On a happier note, Pix, the WalMart blue mix has germinated nicely--am still waiting for the others.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No Thom, it's almost impossible to look and not buy. Ask me....I just bid on another last night!
Before you spend money on a plant, why not put up a thread of "I'm looking for..." on the plat trading forum or here on the N.E. forum. I have 2 or 3 Jacobs Ladder...i'll see what they look like come spring and maybe I can send you some. I have a white one called "Alba" but can't find it in PF but found it here. http://static.flickr.com/34/65846255_c819f360c3.jpg
And my blue/purple one looks like this, I believe its called 'Heavenly Habit' or it could be 'Bressingham Purple'.

Welcome home, Jan! Great to see you posting again. I thought you were in exile or something!

Thomaston, CT

Jan--your choices are wonderful! I love the verbascum, also--Southern Charm is all over my gardens---Can't believe you ordered 31 roses--are they shrubs? The heuchera are also lovely varieties---I try a new one every year.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

oh, pirl, they're so beautiful! I never liked daylilies until I started hanging around here. then when I was still new, pixie sent me one ('Purple Pawprint') just to be nice. then I started seeing the beautiful pics and fell in love. I got a bunch of new ones from the sales catalog at Wild's last year. They're so cheap I figured I couldn't go wrong. I got some from Oakes the year before.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Gram, nice to see you again. I see you got caught up in the co-ops too....my weakness was lily bulbs, over 100 is all im saying.

Robin, glad to hear things are sprouting!!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Robindog, the roses...quite a few miniatures. Ralph Moore's Sequoia Nursery is going out of business (Mr. Moore just turned 101) and I wasn't sure what they are going to do with his stock, so I wanted to be sure to get some of his. a couple of David Austin's (Gertrude Jekyll and Heritage), and a variety of others.

folks who know will laugh...I had 70 ordered at this time last year LOL

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Gram, so nice to see you back!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Here is my new purchase, 'Always Regal' 24" tall bloom is 5.5" creamy yellow with large violet eye and small violet picotee. Blooms mid season with rebloom. Dor TET.

Yes, it is!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I bought (even) more seeds this weekend and arms to make a berry trellis for the blackerries.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Arms??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I was wondering about that, too, Victor. So glad you asked.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Arms, for a post, to tie twine/wire between, to keep the brambles in check? Just asking...not sure, I've done the same thing...that's what I use Indiana Berry for. Love their stuff.
I like that DL...oh boy...I know what I'm doing once I stop yapping here...lol.
grampapa, I read your article on computer designing ones landscape...I might have to check into the 3D project...I always have "eyes bigger than my stomach" in regard to where things should and shouldn't go...Victor touched base on this in his article.
pixie-I did post, not even sure how to go about doing it. But, I need to remember where I have stuff, and what it is, before I go and start telling people I'll trade this for that...Figure about May'ish I'll get to that.
Pirl, that's pretty much how I want my backyard to look...nice curvy path leading to another bed with all DL's, and JI's, and and and...

Ya know what I mean...lol.

I just potted up all of my elephant ears last night, and I potted up everything I got from the first Buried Treasures order. I hope everything turns out ok. It's gonna be another year of giant obnoxious and gorgeous elephant ears...lol.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i was liking the image of another kind of "armed" blackberry trellis so much. Would it keep the squirrels away?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hem is right about the arms. These are made to attach to chain link fence posts. Maybe I'll finally be able to control the blackberries this year. (Or not.)

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

thanks, everybody for the welcome. that's why I disappear, you know. it gives me the warm fuzzies when I come back LOL. if you read my seed article you have an idea where I've been.

AYC, don't take any nonsense from those blackberries LOL

pix, gorgeous DL. like a huge viola (which I love)

hem, I don't guarantee that getting software will keep you from getting too many plants. hasn't worked for me LOL But it is a really nice planning tool. I love the idea of giant obnoxious elephant ears :0)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I need to try to contain my blackberries this year too. Way out of hand last year.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

will you have an armed response against the blackberries?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I ripped them out last year. When their long canes hit the ground they root and I'm sure anyone could fill a 100' line with just blackberries in a few years. One tip rooted under the edge of the shed! That will have to be sprayed with Round Up this year.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Wondering if i am going to regret taking blackberries from Cat at the RU. But i don't think so - i put them up by the woods.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We did enjoy them for many years but it was a huge job keeping them cut back.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, they do root very easily. But if you stay on top of them and trellis them, etc., I think it's worth it. They taste fantastic and are very $$$ at the store. Mine are thornless too.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

our woods are made out of
pokeweed
poison ivy
nightshade
horrible thorny ugly invasive roses
and unidentified tree "suckers" and other branching objects.
Oh, there are some trees too.
And trash and plastic bags blown in from dumpsters/SCSU commuter lots.

So, i'm rooting for the blackberries!

; )

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And they'll be rooting for you...

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

They might be prettier too.
oops - forgot ragweed!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

groan.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

My rose list grew! I did nothing really!!!!! Not my fault really!!!!!! I just went to see one single little rose and the rest is history!!!!
