Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.29 Visit with Friends

Crozet, VA

You made me laugh Rachie. I am in charge of doggy-doo here too. ha-ha For me it is a good thing because it gets me outside and is good for weight control. I don't get outside much in the winter weather, but I am out most every day during the summer.

Wow everyone. Such talent in this group. Laura, how about that package getting there after all this time!!! So you might have been right about the one that I was saying was never sent to me. It could be sitting anywhere.

Liz, you asked about the ham that I baked on Sunday. It is very tasty thank you. I just started buying the small potato rolls at Christmas this year and it has become a staple around here. So yummy with the ham. I have noticed one thing about the ham though, even with just one slice yesterday, my ankles are swollen a bit more than normal.

I see that I was the last one to send in the info for secret pal society. Sorry folks. Will try to do better in the future. Thank you all for iincluding me in things so readily.

A bit ago this thread wasn't showing in my favorites and I couldn't remember for a bit where the forum was and what it was called. I panicked for a minute. I started going through some of the new forums that I have just recently begun reading. Thankfully, I found it quite easily. Now I remember.......A place where I can go and report on my day....the best thing that happened to me......the worst thing about the day .....and what I learned.

The best thing was that the cleaning lady was here and so I have a shiny house for a few days. I don't like remembering the worst of a day, so won't comment there. What I learned? Hmmmm.....I learned that I need to make notes on how to access my pictures on the camera, so that I don't have to waste time each and every time that I want to post something here. ha-ha

So good hearing from everyone......until tomorrow.

Ruby

Ruby, let's hope you get yours today!

I'm sick in the bottom of my tummy, not sure if I'm really not feeling well or the prospect of yet another day on the road..

Suzanne has a hair appt. in Midland so that means I have to drive about 30 miles to meet her..

CANNOT find my car in the yard this morning..let Sailor out and she didn't even want to stay out..did her job as you can see and right back in...

Waiting for a call but if one doesn't come, I think I'll tell Suzanne when she calls that I'm JUST NOT UP TO IT!!!

Too many deaths around me to be stupid and go out in this...

Edited to add:

KNow I'm going the feel guilty as 'h . . l' but I'm not up to it..Suzanne called and said she'd be ready to leave in about 20 minutes..told her I was in and out of the washroom all morning..know they'll not believe me but you know what..I don't care...so going to have my coffee, finish the ironing and just might go to bed for a nap before I go out and work on the snow..with the high winds it will blow back as quickly as I do it...

another day of listening to Betty cry..so might not be on today...
Hope you are all ok..gab latter...

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Betty if you are that worried about going to work it is better to stay home. I'm sure they will understand. If not oh well. Even here if we were getting that kind of snow everything would be shut down.

Liz I was wondering about the girl. But figured I'd wait for the next installment. I agree no young people. I know there are exceptions out there but finding them that is the problem. I don't care for raccoons either. Stay out of my and I am happy. Bad enough the deer eat some of my garden. There's plenty of corn fields for the raccoons.

Ruby never had potato rolls but I do have a recipe. Will have to try making them when I have a couple of days off again. I have to work the next 4. I'm sitting here thinking of that ham. It is my very favorite meat.

Best thing was DH went to work.

Worst thing was DH was driving me crazy over the weekend.

What did I learn That I wish DH had more hobbies.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Somebody tell me what potato rolls are, never had them, but sounds good.

Yep, if I can think of food, you gotta know i am alive and well. The past two days were just lost, but i got well acquainted with the bathroom, that's for sure.

Now, let me back up a bit.
Gita, I did not say enough about your paintings. They are wonderful, and beautiful and far beyond the ability of most. I am saving everything into my Gita file. I also have a Betty file, a GG file, etc., etc....
But back to oil painting. Oils are quite hard to master, but the depth one can get with oils is phenomenal, and Gita, you have mastered oils, obviously. I used to work in oils, and wish i had kept a photo of each one that I did, but i did not and occasionally think of doing them again, but I have all this acrylic paint in tubes now, so I just stay with acrylics. There is not a lot of difference in the finished product, and since it is faster going because of the drying time, acrylics it is for the moment. I still love the lighthouse, also the sunset...well they are all simply wonderful. If we lived closer, I would be with you night and day, nagging until we both got back into oils. With a break in between to work on crafts, of course.
Thanks for the stained glass photos, Betty....That is something I have not done much of, I did have the equipment at school, and had fun with it, but it was an expensive method to teach, since kids were not as careful, and since glass is fragile.....and injuries were rampant. I had to set it aside before there was a real problem.
GG, keep showing us the quilts. I can never get enough of quilts.

You can tell I am well, I can't shut up.

It is interesting to me to sit back and read of your trials and tribulations at work, now that I am no longer working. Our work days either brighten our cloud our days, always has, and i guess always will, no matter where our workplace is. I was fortunate that I loved my work and my students. Now it is up to me to brighten or cloud my days, my choice. Now that I am over my sick battle, once I grow back into my jeans, I will choose sunshine.

I have taken too much time away from my painting, so back to work I go.
Betty, I do hope you have a good day, I am glad you aren't out in that weather.

today begins our SPS Day 1.....I hope you all have fun with it.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Betty I'm so glad that you stayed home and are taking it easy. Let go of your worries and relax (I know that's hard for you my dear.) Have a cup of peppermint tea and settle in with your gardening and craft magazines and enjoy the beauty and warmth of your home and fur babies. Don't you ever stop talking on this thread, we all love hearing from you, that's what it's here for!

Liz hope they get things straightened out with the gal at work. It can sure make for a stressful work environment.

Vicki Potato rolls are yummy!

Sharon so glad to hear that you are feeling well again! I will put some of my plumpness in an envie and send it your way, I have plenty to share! :0)

Hugs, Rachel

Crozet, VA

Okay, let's talk potato rolls. ha-ha I buy mine from the grocery store. They are just like a regular roll but made with potato flour. The brand that I am buying is called Martins and the roll is very yellow in color. Other bakeries make them, Pepperidge Farms and Arnolds are two that come to mind.

Betty, I keep hearing you say that you are talking too much about yourself. That could never happen. Come back ladybug. You are posting about very exciting things. Those of us who don't live as far north as yourself are blown away by the amount of snow that you all are dealing with. Not for me either folks!!!!

Let me tak this opportunity to thank every one here who has gone out of their way to make me feel a part of the group. I can't think of another group I would want to be a part of. Only thing missing is my lack of artistic talent. I have a theory in regards to it though.

I have shared this with others before but almost feel ashamed of sharing it now. The deep dark family secret. ha-ha Gonna laugh at it though. I have always wanted to do something in the arts, not sure what, but something. I probably don't have the patience though for one thing. Whatever I chose, would have to be something that was kind of done quickly or I would lose interest.

Okay, for the family secret. I have thought about this over the years and finally concluded that somewhere along the line when I was an impressionable young person, I was told that art was a waste of time, or something along those lines. I was told that unless a person could make money doing something, they were being wasteful of their time. I always envied my friends in high school who were encouraged to take art. I was encouraged to take General Business types of classes. ha-ha Oh well.

So, I disagree whole heartedly with that belief. It belonged to my parents, it is not my own. I may be putting blame on them and it may not apply. I may just a be a person who can't seem to quiet down enough to create something as beautiful as the painting, stained glass, quilts and other works that I have seen displayed here. Not sure and am not going to waste a lot of time worrying about it.

Maybe when I get to know some of you better, and you get to know me better, I can find some time to spend with each of you and learn a bit of your craft. Sharran, you taught art? Do you feel like teaching a senior citizen some basic techniques at some point?

Okie doke, now I feel as though I am rambling. I need to get up from here and start my day time chores. Take care friends.

Ruby

I have never posted here but I must say I enjoy looking at the crafts that all of you come up with....and I will add.....

Betty, your stories about all the snow are very enjoyable so keep them coming.
Potato rolls by Martin's are the best. If you have never tried them.....go do so now.
Ruby, if you garden or grow houseplants, consider yourself an artist.

There, I have had my say......

Have a great day!!!!!!!

Hi Ladies!

Sorry to say I have been SWAMPED at work again. But I am able to read and work so, you have been keeping me company.

Shar, I am so glad you are feeling better and able to do some painting. Sounded like you had a doozy of 24 hr thing. Very sweet of your neighbor to come and give you a little TLC....Although, wasn't quite sure if a mix of Sprite, mylanta and cat food might do to your already soar tummy. hahaha, little humor there.
Got my SP...

Betty, So glad to hear you decided to stay home and rest. I hope your tummy pains are just from a touch of the nervs from those roads. Were you able to take a little nap? Just enjoy a quiet afternoon...The paper pieces looks pretty cool...was glad that Paul liked your stained glass piece.

Gita, my goodness! Your art is wonderful. I am so glad you shared them with us. Will look forward to seeing the other ones...My favorite is the Lighthouse and the flowers. looks like you are getting the hang of computer stuff too...LOL just learned how to scan at home myself.
...Got to say, I would enjoy getting some seeds from your gardens. Going to look at your selections this weekend.

Carol, so sweet of you to crop the kids art work...Thank you again. I think it was your ? if I draw too. Well, no not really. I more like doodle, quick sketches. When i was alot younger I drew better but never kept it up. DH, doesn't draw either.
...Your neighbor is very sweet to come help you shovel. I am glad kids take the time to help others...Oh yeah, Wow your nephew did a fantastic job on his Bob Marley Drawing!

Liz, Oh my gosh. Thank You!! I did get a smile in the mail yesterday. LOL put a smile on DH's face to be able to DO something with all those Christmas Cards. Who would have thought it was so easy...LOL looks complicated from the picture.
Oh gosh, Good thing your pup listens...Those raccoons are pretty vicious. Know for sure I would not have a doggie door with them around...We would never get sleep because for sure I have them in the house LOL even if they weren't.
Don't know what to say about that young girl, geesh wish she would get a clue already. I am bummed you got to deal with it, sure takes the fun fom work. You know I am real suprised they keep her...can't be too good an image for a Beauty Supply store....I be better be quiet I am getting mad for you.

Oh Laura, How exciting...Congratulations on a another Granddaughter! How fun.
My..sure took a long time for that package to get there, but yippee glad you finally got it...can't wait to see what you will create.

Cat, heheh, stick with us...Betty will have you working on something in no time. Did you see the Santa sleigh workshop at all? i was afraid to even start! LOL now I made about 20 mini ones...never would have thougth of it.`..Now you mentioned bird houses,
is it something you would like to do? I have only made one...and I am still working on it.
...Did I already tell you that? Just got a dajavue feeling. hmmm...Well anyway what ever you want to learn to make I..WE will cheer you on from start to finish!

Giggles, Rachael you are too cute for words...and always wanting to shareLOL.

Now Ruby, i had to go and buy a Ham sandwich after hearing about your Ham! Yumm that was good too. Now I have not ever heard of potatoe rolls, will have to keep my eyes open. LOL If and when i ever go to the store...Don't you fret over being the last, heheh, least it wasn't me...anyway we got it and will just have fun.

Dawn, Hi and thanks about my DD. LOL I have to agree, she is a beauty.

Yow...I have to get back to work here. Stay warm all.

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

It's been so long since I've had potato rolls. I used to make them at the lodge where I worked for the summers during university. We made them using mashed potatoes in the dough. Now I'm curious as to what the ones made with potato flour are like.

Carol, I love your garden clock. That's what I need for when I'm out gardening without my watch.

Gita, I have really enjoyed the pictures of your paintings. I am in awe.

Shar, I'd love to see each stage of the painting you're working on. The idea of putting different textures in it sounds really neat. I'm glad you're starting to feel better.

Betty, your stained glass is amazing. It will be no nice when it's in a window with the sun catching it. I'm so glad you stayed home today. Many times it's just not worth it to push our bodies too much.

Judy, I had to laugh at myself. When you posted pictures of Julia's art, at first I just saw the picture of her and I thought that was it. She's so beautiful, I thought that she had spent the time doing her makeup and taking pictures. Her drawings are very beautiful too. I love her wood nymph.

Ruby, don't worry, you have good company with a lack of artistic talent. I am always so impressed when someone draws or paints something that actually looks like it is supposed to. Sometimes I wish that I studied music at university. I did science though because I thought it would be easier to get a 'real' job with a science degree. Ironically, I use my musical abilities way more than my science abilities. Although, with all the questions Sonora asks about how things work, I'm glad that I can explain a few things scientifically. I aso wish that I would have at least studied plant biology instead of other biology stuff.

This morning was my music morning at the school. With Ella strapped on me, my parka over us and my huge boots I think I added about 50 pounds. I usually don't bundle up quite so much for the quick walk to the school but with the weather so cold, I'd rather have the parka. This evening is a literacy evening at the school so it will be another trip out. Sonora's class went skating this afternoon. Normally I like to go with them to help out but our car's acting up and I didn't want to get stuck at the arena so I'm relaxing at home.

Last night I went curling with some friends. It was so nice to get out of the house. Ella barely napped at all yesterday so I was very grateful for the break. She has a couple of her pre-molars just breaking through her gums so I think she's a little more sensitive than normal.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Bhaugh, welcome into our community..it's one that's always open so enjoy, share, laugh, cry and meet some of the nicest people you'll ever fine.. I know, because I've met them...

To start with, the SUN IS OUT! imagine...it's just so exciting..Victoria Harbour and area drapped in a fluffy blanket of snow...I know, I know, I haven't been drinking, honest, it's just that today is the first day in 4 that I've not spent most of it outside shovelling...

Early morning I spent in and out of the washroom, really am coming down with something..had a few hot chocolates, soup and 2 baths, can't believe with 2 fireplaces and main heater going I don't seem to be able to warm up...anyway, I did take time this morning to call Bernice and check up on all of them..funeral is tomorrow, Michelle returned home last night and picked up Noah.
Bernice/Cliff and family have a christian background and strong belief in the Lord..she says what they are going through right now is almost a sense of peace..Bernice was talking to Shawn's mother and was amazed at how strong she is..his mother said that many times this past year, not know what he was up to, if he was homeless (before Michelle took him back into the fold) and prayed to the Lord that if the demons got the best of him, and that if he had to live such a life, she'd rather see him taken and live with the Lord...so guess some prayers are answered...

His youngest daughter (11) said to Bernice last night, 'well grandma, I'm not going to worry about him tonight because I know he's safe!) Imagine..a little child living with so very much..overwhelming..Noah is taking it in stride..but of course he's much younger and not sure what this all means..the eldest boy, that's another story, he's lost his best friend...

No one has mentioned the way he passed, yes, they talk about him being electrocuted but not that he had broken into the main hydro storage area to steal...no one needs know that part although I'm sure many do because it was on the news, not saying his name or age, but just that it had happened...boy I got sidetracked didn't I - before I go on..funeral is tomorrow..next week I'll make a point of taking Michelle out for supper..give her a little break..so now with my story..after talking with Bernice and being ever so tired, sore muscles just all around not feeling good, Bernice said Cliff will come over and do the front and the back, blow back all the banks and make it easier for you..I was ever so thankful..so that made for a restful day..

Know you will not believe I've rested but have and to pass the time of day I got out some knitting that was half done..put it on the knitting machine and finished 2 dickies..Kyles is small for he needs a new one...DON"T go there..lol...what I call a dickie is a face/neck warmer which I started to make about 30 years ago and made good money doing so..that old knitting machine earned it's keep..well the snowmobilers love them..after they are made I cut out an insert of deer hyde which no matter how cold outside it is, the wind and cold cannot penatrate the hyde...gave up for a few years making them but have about 3 or 4 almost done and Kyle asked me for another as he's outgrown his..they never take them off in the winter..all of my boys couldn't be without...so that's what I'm up to .. just put the hyde on Kyle's now I'll embroider his name on it and finish the other for Cliff..saw he was out with snow blowing on his face, looking cold as could be...I've done over 300 of them over the years...funny, they name a snowmobile poker run after Roger..it's called "Roger Pauze Family Fun Poker Run" and hundreds attend the run..so cute to see them all take these dickies off...you can never wear them out..had a few men order their 2nd one just in case something happened to me..that's what Greg says..'mom, get 2 or 3 ahead for me won't you, never know when you'll no longer be able to do them..you know old age..' he forgets that he must have a dozen or so as each year he purchases new machine, new snowmobile outfit and I do one to match..
Not cheap, about $30.00 worth of wood..it's doubled at the neck..hide is about $25.00 and then my time..I usually get $125.00 each ..when I started I think I was selling them for $50.00 but now the hyde is so very expensive...
But giving one to Cliff will be an act of appreciation..for me to get out this morning, or to have someone come in and blow the banks back..would have cost $$$ and he wouldn't take any money so, I'll do what I think I do best, give him a gift of one...

Vicki, when you say a break table..do you mean a metal break or a table where you can have your breat??? And I could send some hobbies for you DH to do..have plenty available..

Shar..hope you are working on that extra 10 lbs..and boy I have at least 30 extra I can send you..and you got the stay out of the kitchen part right..

Liz, hope you got the work situation under control today without much stress..I truly think that's why they are hiring so many retirees..a lot less problem, better work ethics (not always, but sometimes) - don't want to insult the younger ones...lol.. where are you ordering the drill bit from??? might be interested...if you don't have pieces of stained glass, check where the nearest is..sometimes they sell leftovers (all colors/textures) by the pound..cheap/cheap...must get at that project as well...

Ruby, going to have to check out what potato rolls are..even after your describing them I don't think I've seen them...bet they taste good though...

Gita, truly loved seeing your art..my favorite of all is the lighthouse...did you say they were oils??? because if they are..someone gave me an entire box of oil paints thinking I might use them, but not, I use Genesis (heat-set type paint) which really is better than oils..no smell, nothing to make you sick, your palette never dries and when you finally have it like you want it, you heat set it with the special gun that comes with the kit...or if you want to change something, you dry it and paint right over it...so that's a plus...

I'd love any kind of seeds you could send..making a new area bed and trying to get seeds from all my friends..it will become my "Friendship" flower bed...

Rachel..so nice you helping out..was the tape by any change the "Gaither" family..not sure of the spelling but know I listen tot hem on Friday nights at 8pm and they are fantastic...

Jeannine..when you say you take your quilted pieces out, does that mean you have them machine quilted??? could you not stitch in the ditch with clear thread???

Well I'm going off, going to lay down for a few hours..last night I cut out some quick and easy stained glass angels before I put my room in order so might try to solder them tonight....

So, hope I have more time to visit with you all....

Here are my dickies..the bottom one needs the sides knit (so back to the machine it goes) and then Kyle's name...then fini and off they go to good homes..lol

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

Gillian, you do have talent..you are just being modest..know you enjoy sewing and gardening..it takes talent to do such things...

Teething is such an awful time isn't it..they are in pain and don't know what to do with themselves..I remember getting some of Roger's rye and rubbing it on their gums to ease the pain, always seems to work..maybe lol that's why Greg has never drank..hated the taste...I'll have to remind him of that...

Sounds like you've had quite the day...as for painting or music..you are still so very young..follow your dream..take up something..

For those who said ginger ale and soup..I'm doing both..so let's hope I feel up to par for tomorrow...

Shar..must say I overboilt the soup in the microwave and now it's off to clean up the remnants within..lol...

At home I had a beautiful sign in my kitchen..perhaps I should share:

"I KISS BETTER THAN I COOK!" LOL (and that's the truth)

Here are the little angels I'm doing with leftover glass..have enough small pieces I could make hundreds...but think I'll let Suzanne make the hundreds...

wow betty the angels are gorgeous!

Betty,

How cute your little angels are! Are the wings also glass or something else? They would look so cute on a Christmas tree!!!! Or as sun-catchers! I love them! I will send you a bunch of seeds and would you send me a couple of the angels? Please look at my "haves" and tell me what you would like to have.
Talking about seeds---is it OK to send seeds to Canada? Can I just declare that there are seeds in the package? If not--I have "lied" when sending cuttings to people and declared them as "gloves" or a "blouse" and dinner napkins (once), etc. They always got there....See! I have a "shady side"!

Also--I could not really make out your dickies too well, as they were so dark. I did not understand WHERE you attach the deer hide???? Do these also have the face covering? Like ski masks?

Ruby,

You said you would not have the patience to do arts or crafts. You feel that way because it is NOT a hobby of yours....yet...:o)! See, once you LOVE doing something with all your heart and soul--you don't look at things that way. Once you sit down to work on a craft project--time flies! It is almost like you transcend to a different consciousness. Just put on some music you like and work away! I know I can get totally "lost" in something like this. In my long ago days when I was really, really into all my crafts, I would sit up into the wee hours and work on them....oblivious to sleep.

OK! NOW--re all my paintings. Thank you to those that have all said kind words about them. I DO want to show you the rest of them--so please indulge me. I know Shar wanted to see more, and so did Seed. Well--there are about 6 more, so please allow me to share! I went back to each one and rediced the resolution from "high" to "Medium" which knocked about 100+ KB off the size. I hope it won't affect the quality all that much.

OK! I ended up with the beautiful Snow Leopard, so here is one of a Snow Owl. This went to a couple that live outside of DC. in Bowie.

This is another whimsical one I did for my girls.

It is off the cover of the children's book--"Misty of Chincotigue". Chincotigue is an "island" at the end of "Assetigue Island" in NC. That is where all the wild ponies roam and where they have the Wild Ponies round-up every year. The force them to swim across the channel and then they are auctioned off--wild as they are--to people who take them home and tame them and raise them. I think you would learn more if you Googled this.....

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I would like to re send a couple of the ones I already sent--but took photos of. I think these will look better now that I have "refreshed" them in contrast and color a bit.

So, here, once again is the one of the Holy City. Many of you liked this a lot. Thanks!
So do I!

And--here are the WOLVES--again! The coloration should be a bit better.
Man! I sure love this one!!!!

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

And here is the last one! Shar--this is the one that took me ALL 10 weeks of the class to complete. I just could not get the brick and stone to my liking.
This painting went to another couple that we were good friends with. The husband died long ago of complications from diabetes. The wife remarried and now lives in FL.

This is a tower in the massive wall that surrounds the "Old Tallin" of Estonia. It is called "Pikk Herman". Tallin is their capital. Latvia has the same kind of a thing. The inside of the wall surrounding "Old Riga". These "OLD" capital cities are where all the tourists spend their time--in the street cafes, the cobblestone, narrow streets, the old castles and buildings, etc. Go to the Baltics some day--NOT just to Spain or Italy or Germany or all the other, usual places.

OK! End of promotion.....

Good looking lady.. love the picture of the wolves...do go back to painting Gita...

Well today is almost over for me, it's been quiet and had I not gone out to thank Cliff this morning I'd still be in my jammies...

Suzanne will be going to a concert tomorrow night and staying in the city..her daughter will be joining her so I'll be picking Suzanne up and we'll go in my car...if weather is bad I certainly don't want to be driving on my own so I'll just hop a ride with either Paul or the girls and leave my car in the city...

Now I do have good news...Suzanne just called and said all the final papers were signed and the building in Innisfil (Barrie) is a go...OMG...we had hoped it would be before winter, but guess we'll not get moved in until spring..Paul wants to do a few renovations..I'll have a good night sleep with that in mind..

Now Paul says no problem for winter driver now..hello/hello dah..the bad weather is from here to Innisfil..but we won't tell him that right now..

Paul told Suzanne to let me know that I'm not to come in until I'm 100%..well that might be spring..lol..

But have had Monday off (except for 1 1/2 of driving...Tuesday..well we only worked less than 2 hrs. and did a full day of driving and then today..I took it off...so that only leave tomorrow and 1/2 day Friday..I'm laughing because Paul said the guys who worked for him that he let go came in for payday and then had Friday off...le'ts hope he doesn't think I've done that..I'm sure NOT!

Gita..yes the wings are done with glass which has a mother of pearl tone to it..I'm just using scraps..so, I'd gladly post you some in exchange for sees...my pleasure...

As for the dickie, it fits up to the nose, then down the front and back..with the hyde on it you can leave your jacket open and wind cannot penatrate...great for winter enthusiasts....

Best of the day..can I have 3 no 4...1)day off 2) getting the office in Innisfil 3) Cliff snowblowing and taking down the banks...4)bhaugh joined in..always nice to meet someone new...

Worse...not feeling up to par...just remembered, I only had soup at lunch..forgot supper..too late now!

What did I learn..can't put a little bowl of soup in the micro for 3 minutes..makes a mess....

Goodnight dear friends...sleep tight...if I can't sleep, I'll be back for the night shift...

(Cathy), MO

Just popping in to say hi and hope you all have a good evening. Betty hope you feel better. And Gita, if those wolves of yours ever need a good home, I volunteer!!LOL

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

gita, I knew Cat would be nuts when she saw those wolves!!!!

Be back in a little bit.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Betty,

I am not sure what plants do well in your zone--5b??? I am in 7b.
Would you PLEASE tell me what grows well around your neck of the woods?

I think you would love the double purple and yellow Daturas, but you have to start them indoors at least 2 months before they go outside. The Cardinal Climber vine climbs anything. and the Morning Glories do too..

Please click on my name and see my Trade List. Then let me know. If you do not see anything, then i will send you something I have made in return. Deal?

Cat--You would have to stand in line for those Wolves. They are destined to go to my daughter here. I wish she would take them NOW--but every time I bring it up, she says she has nowhere to hang them. I think she just doesn't think they will go with anything..she is kind of a design freak. And so they will hang....in my house....

Oh, well.....Gita

Wow! Y'all have been busy on here!

First off - Congratulations Laura!!! I am so happy for you! Girls are so fun to dress up, then they turn two and an attitude sets in that never goes away! LOL But it was fun!

bhaugh - Welcome. You are in my home town. I was born in Norfolk and lived there until 8 years ago. Are you originally from there or a transplant - maybe with the Navy? I very much love Richmond now and consider this my home. My parents have moved to Toano and my DS is in Wmsburg so no one of my family still down there. DH's sis lives in Va Beach so we get down ocassionally.

Betty, yes I take my quilts to be machine quilted because the patterns are just so beautiful. I don't have the patience to hand quilt.

Yes, I am very bad with quilting projects but the winter time is the only time I work on them. When the weather gets warm, I am out in the yard. DM and I are heading to the quilt show at the end of Feb so I know I will be bad again so I've got to sew what I bought last year!!! And on top of those kits, I have about 6 kits my Dm has given me too. I got a little done today. DS was sick so I kept him home and worked (really!) from home. We watched a couple of movies. His friend brought his homework home so he finished that while I sewed. I will try and post some of the quilts I have put together but that still need "quilting". I have a few posted on past threads.

Well, off to bed now. Y'all have a good night and I'll "see" ya tomorrow!

While deciding what I was going to share at the literacy evening I went to tonight I was reading through the memoirs that my grandfather recorded a few years before his death. I'd like to share something with you. My grandfather was born in 1917 in Oklahoma. He wrote: "When I was eight or nine Dad and Mama thought it was too dangerous for me to hunt with the 22 rifle so I got to use the 410 guage shotgun. I spent a lot of time riding over the ranch shooting rattlesnakes. It was a lot of fun for me but not much fun for the rattlesnakes."

I found this to be quite poignant since Sonora will be nine in February. I can't imagine her with a 22 rifle or a shotgun. Times have changed. I am very grateful that my grandfather took the time to write some of his memories. I have kept a journal on and off but I really should get better at doing it. I know that it will be appreciated. I've included a picture of my grandparents taken in the late 1930's.

Betty, thank you for your kind words about my talents. We each have been given special and unique gifts. The world would certainly be boring if we were all given the same ones.

Best: Getting out for the evening and seeing some of my friends, also, hearing Sonora read her book in the children's part of the literacy evening

Worst: Not getting to go to the arena for Sonora's class skating trip

Learned: DH does not appreciate cinnamon in his chili (I just wanted to try something new)

It is a little late to be posting because all of you are probably snoozing away, except maybe Rachel. I think it was Ruby who said sometimes real life has a way of creeping in.

Bhaugh, welcome, we hope you stay with us. It is a fun and caring group you will soon see.

GG, are you familiar with the American Quilter's Society? And the AQMuseum? It is located about 20 miles from me, and I think you would enjoy it. Maybe sometime you could come this way just to take a look. In April we always have a huge Quilt Show, the event brings in quilters from many countries and it is pretty amazing.

Gilli, your mention of your grandfather is so poignant. I too have writings from my grandparents, as well as those of my mom and dad. I hope my children will appreciate things like that that I leave behind. It is important for us to learn from what they have to teach, I think.

Betty, did you get my bug? Wow I hope not. I really did not feel well till about noon today. And I still feel a bit shaky. I realize now that the last food i had was on sunday, so that alone can contribute to the weak feeling. I hope you are better much sooner than that.

OH, Gita. There are times when even I am left with no words. What a treasure you have in those paintings. I have maybe 3 favorites, Jerusalem of course.... And now I add the tower.... And the snow leopard.....I adore the wolves....... I love the sun/moon/birds...... And the lighthouse....I don't think that is 3, is it?

Well, you do such an amazing job it is hard to say one is better than the other. I like the horses, too. And coming to america. You do have a way with mist and atmosphere. I wish I could show them in my gallery. They deserve a very special place where they can all be seen at once.

Seed, be sure the girls take a look at Gita's work. I think Sabrina in particular can learn from it. I still am not sure about Julia's interest in photography, but if she did that self portrait (the photograph), that is her strong spot. They both are very talented, and you are fortunate to have them, and they you...because you will support their talents and interests.

Betty, the angels are just so sweet. You are using every scrap. I have a friend who does stained glass, and have many little hanging free form ornaments that she makes with her scraps. they are beautiful with the light behind them. I know yours are as well.

Liz, Ves, Carol, ruby...Dawn...Laura, who am I leaving out? Oh, Cat...you with your funny seed names....(ha, I saw that)...anyway..it is late and I am still in the wobbly stage, so I will say good night all, and sweet dreams. Bhaugh...join us tomorrow, please...we'd love to hear whatever you have to say.

Nite all..
Shar

Morning all,

Well I am all caught up now..read all the posts..

Hi Bhaugh..my sister lived in Norfolk VA many years ago..she was married to a navy fella for a few years.

Gillian..so nice to go back and revisit the family history. By co-incidence I was doing a lot of searching online yesterday for my neighbour about her family. She doesn't use a computer..but she had some info from another relative..and off we went playing away..my head was dizzy from her telling me all the different names and how they were related....I said I can hardly keep my own family straight..but it is amazing what is online now..fascinating..

So glad to hear Shar and Betty are feeling better..I had chicken noodle soup and crusty bread last night too..just because I was thinking about it...comfort food..soups are wonderful in the winter.

Gita..enjoyed your wonderful paintings..and especially seeing you...too bad you don't have the originals..wouldn't it be neat to have a show in Sharon's gallery.

Betty..great news about the new building..at least the drive will be shorter..

So...I am thinking baout what I will send my Secret Pal.........hmmmm

Have a great day all.

Betty..this is a Datura..they will grow here..they grow from seed and bloom in one season..then you harvest the seed and plant again the next year ..or they will just re-seed themselves..

Cheers,
Carol

Betty,

The Daturas I have are the double purple/white Metel and also the double yellow one.
They also grow and bloom in the same season but you do have to start them indoors. If you wait until the weather is warm to start them outdoors, their seed pods will not have enough time to mature and you won't have any seeds to harvest.

I will send you seeds for both. Here is the purple one.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

And here is the yellow one. They grow about 3-4 feet tall and also branch a lot.

Then--how about some of these 4 O'Clocks? This one is called "Broken Colors" as the blooms on the same plant are all kinds of different colors--sometimes more than one color in the same bloom.

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here is the Cardinal Climber vine. The blooms are small-about 1"+ across, but bright red--they just jump out at you.

AHHH! In looking for pictures of more flowers, I found my Face Painting board of pictures. So--please don't mind that I post it here. I did write you about this in #28, I think....

Hi Ladies - Good to see everyone posting. Welcome bhaugh. You are a neighbor of mine too. About 3 1/2 hours drive from me. We come that direction a few times a yar it seems.

Thank you for pointing out that gardeners are artists also. I feel the same way. I am glad that you finally posted

Well, I don't have much to say. Just wanted to say hi to you all. Have a great day everyone.

Ruby

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Gita,
I need those seeds....I hope you have enough for me. I have white datura (moon flower bush) but don't have the others....I planted my datura in May or June last summer, it bloomed and seeded anyway, but then we are still very warm in early November.

Back later....morning, everyone.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Gita, I WANT THEM ALL...and..lol...Suzanne said she's looking forward to a few as well so now tell me what colors of angels you want I'll I'll start getting them done..I'm just so excited...I love all the Datura's but especially the white and purple..now would I be able to start them shortly...

Victoria Harbour, ON

I always purchase climbers but nothing really climbs..to any degree so my arches look on the bare side..this might just do the trick..

Want to tell you why I think I was ill - off and on all weekend and week..

I have a habit of buying food for family of 10 sometimes, if it's something I like..well it's been 3 or 4 times I've purchased bacon and have thrown out the package un-opened...so just before Christmas when I was leaving for Florida I put all the meets into the freezer...

Well over the weekend I thought I've not even enough energy to walk over the restaurant or variety store, so took a package of bacon - maple syrop flavoured..cooked the entire package up..that way I could eat it with bacon and eggs which I cook one day..then bacon and tomato sandwiches...so I have a feeling that the bacon could have been bad AND I've been eating it and voila...sick girl..think that could be it!

Annoyed this morning..driving in and the roads were bare..good driving but with all the slush needed to use my windshielf washers and they barely cleaned my windows..so stopped into Canadian Tire and got 2 new onces....$48.00..now you would think buying a new car-only 6months old that they would work..but not..so bought the winter driving ones...now at lunch I'm off to Home Depot, have to purchase the extendable snow rake to take snow load off back storage shed and a pair of high winter boots..then it's Suzanne's 50th next Friday and am doing a lamp..need to pick up glass/solder etc. so let's hope I'll have a few $$$ left for next week..lol..

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi All. DS is better and back at school today. I knew he was better when he stopped snuggling on me and started arguing!

Sharon, I would LOVE to take my Mom to that quilt show and museum. She would just go crazy (so would I!!!) Is it in April every year?

Gita, I planted 4 o'clocks for the first time this past year and I LOVE them! I was able to collect some of the seeds and I'm sure a ton "planted" themselves. I was always leary of them because I was told they self seed so bad it's hard to control them. Now I just don't care! I have a raised bed "English Garden" in my back yard and I've taken one of the beds and I just throw seeds all over it and whatever grows, grows! I also have about 8 or 9 different mints growing in pots buried in this bed too. I want to try and expand my mint collection some more this year. I need to also finish putting down the walkway throughout the beds. I started 2 years ago and didn't get the "bug" to do any last year.

I think I'm going to have a time with Murphy this year. he has taken to digging and pulling up anything he can get his little mouth on. He pulled up my 2 blueberry bushes in the fall and he "helped me" cut down my hibiscus even if it was a month too early. I discovered yesterday that he chewed one of my tree peonys down to the ground and I had just gotten my first bloom from it last spring. I also wrapped all of my hydrangeas with burlap and pinestraw and he got an inkling to chew on one of the posts. Well once he pulled that out of the ground, what was inside was fair game and zap - my hydrangea gnawed to the dirt! I have yet to see a bloom on this bush in the 6+ years I've had it!!! And we're getting another puppy this summer!!! AHHHHH! I might as well give up gardenging!! :)

Well, off to lunch. I'll chat back later today!

Jeannine
