Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.29 Visit with Friends

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, MY!!!!! All the pictures i scanned in are too huge to post!!!!

Does anyone know, off hand, what KB size is the max for posting here???? I D-mailed Shar one to cheer her up, and it was too big for the screen! Couldn't even see the edges! Is it different if you post it on a D-mail than here?
SO! I may have to re-do them all and delete the ones I did today! That is a bummer!!!!

You know, I will send one here-right now and see what happens.
This was the very first one I painted when i started taking these classes. Also a picture out of a Geographic. I KNOW it will be huge--so just hang in there......

Thanks, Gita

Shar...OMG, you can't afford to get a virus..you weigh next to nothing now..worse thing is being sick and nobody in the house to look after you...did you call the doctor..am sure they may have something to settle your tummy..don't worry about the exchange right now, you get better then you can d-mail us the name of our secret pal...

Gita..love the painting..that's a few years ago for sure..sounds like your mastering the computer..

Now I know I've been gabbing about me, me and me these last few days but tomorrow, when at work and nothing to do, I'll have all day to go back to our last thread and read this thread and catch up on gossip..

So if you will excuse me, I'm more than tired and it's bedtime..

Have a couple of seagulls to add in the upper right sky then waxing to do on the panel..might get that done before work or at work..too bad I couldn't get the dychronic bevels to stop shining those colors so you could really see what it looks like..am sure he'll like it...

Sharon- Take care of yourself girl. Lot's of liquids. Peppermint or Ginger tea to settle the tummy. Imodium AD works good for tummy flu.

Betty- Love the stained glass it gorgeous, I'm sure he will adore it! How sweet of Kyle to come over, he is a gem. Glad to hear that the snow has stopped for awhile.

Gita- I will look at your list as soon as I get done writing this post. I am in two seed swaps right now on DG and I was in one this last summer so if any of you are looking for something special let me know, I might just have it. I love the colors in your painting and the sun setting is gorgeous!

Judy- Great artwork! Send those girls to Art School they have a natural talent.

Carol- I love the clock and your hosta bed is so inviting!

Dawn- The poem brought a tear to my eye. I was in the fire service for 15 years and I have seen those kinds of things happen. I am a true believer in angels.

Laura- Hope that you sleep better tonight.

Trop- Lovely thread on Dr. King, I am so glad that he has his own day; so that kids will always be reminded of what we lost and what an amazing man he was.

Cat- How cold is it there?

Had a busy day today. Took Scrappy to the vet for his rabies shot, then to the pet store for dog food, then the post office and back home. Quick lunch and went to help my friend with more organizing. Today I moved her china hutch and buffett and hooked up her new tv and moved the old one. She was thrilled with her new tv, we watched a DVD of one of her favorite gospel quartets. Boy can these guys sing and they are nice to look at too! Came home and spent some time planting shrubs and a new Witch Hazel in the yard, it was cold 38F but felt good to be out in the dirt! Made dinner and have been on DG for the past few hours catching up. Sleep well my friends. Rachel

I had to get up for a little bit to see whether I was alive or not. But I just feel wiped out right now.

Betty, the SG is wonderful. I miss doing that now that I am not teaching. I don't have the tools here that I had there.

Ah Gita........another wonderful painting. and they are not too big when we bring them up to enlarge...so I think you are doing fine.

Tomorrow, ladies. My kitties are worried because I have not played with them today, and they have snuggled on the foot of my bed whenever I am in it. They think something very strange is going on.

so do I.

no hugs for you tonite, I have a germ or two.

Sharon
This is your jewish mother speaking!
If you are not better tomorrow go to the doctor! (Please :0) Love, Rachel

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I thought your answer would be chicken soup!!!!
Hi Rach, I will I promise if I can figure out how to get there without barfing the entire way with my head hanging out the car window. Can you imagine.

I am having a bit of a rest from it all right now, but am afraid to move lest it start again.

I have not been really sick like this in a long time, and it is no fun when you are alone. course it would be no fun even with someone here....

But tomorrow, I promise. I will be well or I will ask for something to get me out of my misery!

Sleep well, girls.
I sure wish we lived closer.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I was figuring that you should hold of on the soup for another day or so, until you can keep it in your tummy for more than 5 minutes. I would mail you some homemade soup but I don't think it would survive the trip. I keep the chicken stock in the freezer so when Carl or I get sick I can just defrost it and cook some noodles to add to it. Glad your feeling a bit better. Do you think it could be food poisoning?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Looks as though you girls are up and at it again, or have you even been sleeping...

Shar, can one get a virus over typed words..lol..no laughing matter..it sounds dreadful..you be extremely careful, they said that to date a 36 and 78 year old have died from the strain that is going around here...Suzanne was quite ill a couple weeks ago.. so don't let anything go...

My tummy is quezzy still this morning..must be that "maple syrup bacon' didn't agree with me since I ate it..

It is snowing lightly, soothing as you watch it through the street lights..haven't listened to the news..don't need to know the forecast..

So, I'm off to get beautiful..keep care and will gab with all of you when I get to the office...

Pacifica, CA

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Liz,
The raccoon story was interesting..three would have scared me to death too. I have only had one at a time when I see them here. Good for your dog to have scared them off. Is there a ravine or woods near you?

Sharon..Sorry to hear you are so ill. hope you are feleing better today and can get something to stay down. Are your boys ok?

Rachie..crackers and Chicken soup..you have the right combo. I remember eating crackers before I even got out of bed for morning sickness when I was pregnant. Is the fire service sort of like our volunteer fire people here in the small towns.

Betty..your Stained glass piece is coming along beautifully..I see you have done something to the water to make it look rippled..very nice..was this a special gift in honour of an occasion for Paul?..or just a late Christmas gift?

Cat..have a good day at workk at least it will be a short week and it will fly by.

Gita..great painting..I look forward to seeing more..did you do drawings and any paintings earlier than 1974.
I remember that this was the first time you took classes.

Dawn..yes the darkening of Breenie's drawings shows off the detail much better..

Judy..do you have this drawing talent too?..or your hubby?

I was amazed by my nephew at Christmas couple of years ago when he gave his sister a drawing of Bob Marley he had done.

Bye for now

Betty, beautiful stained glass picture. MAN!!!!

Gita, wonderful paintings!!!!

Sharon, take care of yourself. I know that bug can knock you for a loop. Hopefully it's only a day or two bug. Get better soon!

Uneventful weekend. Cold wintery weather Sat and more called for today although it will turn to all rain by the afternoon. Sewed a little but basically just vegged. Off from work yesterday which was nice. Now today seems like a Monday. This is our last holiday (company-wise) until May (Memorial Day). I can take days off but it's so nice to look forward to those company holidays.

I will chat with y'all later!!!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Jeannine,

You working on quilts again?

It is snowing here..wondering how it was on the 400 highway for Betty's drive to work.
I better put the TV on and see if there is any news.

(Cathy), MO

Good morning everyone. Sneaking in from work. it got down to 7 here last night, but the wind is coming from the north so it's bitter! I haven't heard what the wind chill is.
We got a little rain last night but not enough to make the roads too bad. Sounds like they got more up north.
Be safe and warm out there everyone.
And Sharon, hope you're feeling better.
Betty are you catching something too???

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

I actually have 5 quilting projects that I need to take to be quilted. One of these days I'll take them over to the shop. I have 4 wall hangings and one full quilt to do. Those are off to the side and I'm working on a lap quilt kit I bought at last years quilt show. It's a very easy quilt but it has 20 6-pointed star squares which is time consuming. It takes me about 20-30 mins to make 1. I have 8 more to make then I can start piecing it together. The fabrics are all vintage looking florals. I'll post a picture once I get it pieced together. I have a couple of other kits to work on too but I am so bad with putting fabrics together I have to get my DM to help me. I like ti when a kits says to put "this fabric" here and "that fabric" there!

PS - I want some of y'all's snow!!! Just a little bit!!!! (a foot will do!)

Morning..left at 6:45 arrived her at 10:45am..4 hr. drive...Paul called to cancel but Suzanne had forgotten her cel so here we are..we're just getting things organized and heading back up north..wicked /wicket

Oh my..I've been thinking about you Betty..have a safe trip home... or why don't you just get a hotel for the night..

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Starzz,

I was always drawing--all my life. My mom said that back in Latvia ( I left when i was 7), I was always drawing horses, and they were never still--always running or jumping. Wish I had one of those to see. I wonder just how good they were, as i would have been like--5 or 6.
I have never taken this natural. God-given talent I have seriously. I did major in art in High School and got a taste of all the branches of art. That's it!
If you remember the 2 pictures of the Sparrow hawks i did in pencil--those were done in, maybe, 1960?

When I signed up for the "classes" I mostly needed to learn techniques of oil painting as I had never, ever used oil paints. And some instruction on how to achieve a given effect. Out teacher was good at that. If we didn't "get it", she would sit down and show us--on OUR paintings! I wrote you all about that.
What I found out is that I was a great copier of any picture from anywhere--any size and making a painting of it.

So, as promised, I will now post some of the other paintings--NOT all.....Save some for later...

This is just a pretty flower vase.

Betty have a safe drive. I try not to complain about our weather when I hear all the snow you are having. But it does remind me of my childhood. Snow up to the power lines where do we put the snow. You know what i mean. All good memories.

Loved the SG.

Liz hope your truck day went well. I am waiting on the call for time. Hope it comes in tonight then all I have to do is go in tomorrow and put stuff where it belongs. I asked the manager the other day if the break table could be moved. She said she was told it had to go there! Tomorrow when I go to work I will talk to her about it some more. If we could move it all the Christmas stuff we are storing could go there and not have to be moved for 8 months.

You guys are all so busy working on your crafts. I guess for me it is the garden catalogs right now.

Gita just beautiful! If I had talent like that I sure wouldn't be working where I am now. that would be so much more fun and profitable then $7 an hour. Always wanted to do crafts for a business but it never worked out.

Sharran are you feeling better? No fun being sick at any time.

I skimmed all the news trying to catch up and know I missed plenty. so Hi to all and I hope to pop in later. Have to go and put laundry in the dryer and start a load of whites.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! This is probably my biggest "masterpiece"! The painting was about 3'x2'. I had to do the "grid" method on the canvas as well as on the Christmas card i was painting it from so I would get everything to scale.

This was a Birthday gift to the husband of one of our best couple friends. He was like a brother to me. His wife and I had a strained relationship. We were just very different people.
In scanning this picture last night, I realized--all over again--how beautiful it was!

That's it for today! Will send some more tomorrow.....

Gita

Gita, your paintings make me want to paint more, instead of this one that I have promised to do. It is much easier for me to paint things that I want to paint, instead of things that others want me to paint. When I get this one done, I think I will not take another commission for awhile.

And GG, I want to do more quilts the way you do them.

Betty, I have to try that stained glass.

I doubt there are enough years left in my life to do all I want to do.

I was so angry with myself yesterday and last night, and again this morning for being so sick. Just wasted time. when I finally went to sleep last night at 11, I slept till 4, then slept again till 8, then again till 10. I got up just a little while ago, and i am moving, so that is a good sign. The biggest problem was that I had not eaten yesterday at all when this hit me, so you know how horrible it is when you have to throw up and there is nothing there to come up.

At any rate, I am not doing that now, but still feel like I am underwater or something. It will probably take a little more time to be up and at 'em again.

Betty, yep...I haven't eaten since sometime Sunday, and I really can't afford to lose any more weight. I remember an older lady a few years ago who told me that the older she got the more important it was to her to keep an extra 10 pounds "in storage" she said. Her theory that since she was alone, if she ever got sick the first thing that would happen is that she would lose weight, she wasn't very big to begin with, so she was storing up 10 extra pounds just in case she got sick, she would have some poundage to fall back on. sounds like an ok idea now that I have been through my first rough spot, that of being very sick and very alone. Of course my neighbors call, but I didn't want them to be near me and catch the same bug. But it is nice to know that if I fainted or something and couldn't answer the phone someone would be here in a matter of minutes. Problem with that is that it is driving me nuts answering the phone every 5 minutes, just to assure them that I am still alive.

But I think I am on the mend.

I told you we need to all live closer, maybe we could start a commune, find us a huge house, with a bunch of acres and just move in....Rachel could be in charge of chicken soup. And Betty could stay out of the kitchen! Times like this I sure needed somebody to help me up off the cold bathroom floor!!! I thought my cats were going nutz. I would get back in bed then I would feel this little tug on the cover, then there would be a little nose touching my face. Daisy rarely gets on my bed, but she sure stayed close last night. My grandmother used to say that cats in particular could sense illness. Maybe Daisy is one of those.

OK, enough of all this....I think I will make it through this day upright.
Be back a little later.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Gita..wonderful paintings..it must be fun for you to reminisce about the people you gave them to and times you painted them. Thanks for explaining about your artistic gift..and that it was always with you.

Sharon..great to hear you are upright..try to eat a little something..and get your strength back.

Hi Ves..any plants you have decided to try for sure this year that you haven't had before? Good Luck with persuading your manager that you are right about where the break table should go.

Gardengirl..you are so bad....so many projects....but I suppose you can't help yourself when you see a new piece you would love to do.

So..I might just go outside for some fresh air and do a little shovelling and clean off my car.
My young neighbour has a plow and he will clear my driveway when he does his..but I do the walkway.

Bye for now..
C.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Shar,

Glad you are feeling better....Maybe you need to keep some kind of "Energy drink around. Or the ones that put on a bit of weight. It is better than living on an empty stomach for 2 days!!!! However, if you have a stomach virus, that is Nature's way of cleansing the system. Hope you eat soon!

I will be glad to send you an extra 10lbs off of MY bod! I can spare it--besides, if I lost 10lbs, I would fit back into many of the jeans that are a bit snug now.

I think I still need to go to My Documents and re size the pictures. Even though they posted OK here, I thing there is no sharpness to them, which tells me they are too big.

OK! Must really do something more constructive today......

Gita

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just got home...it's snowing to beat the devil..think Paul felt bad that we made it in and he and the girls stayed home..he met me at Suzanne's and followed me home..he also tried to get rid of some of my snow banks with his plow .. said he did it just before getting to Suzanne's..well that means within 30 minutes we have about 4"..

So dear friends I must apologize for just gabbing about me, I'm off to shovel then a warm bath..we're taking a change of clothes to work tomorrow so we can spend the night IF we make it in and IF the weather isn't the best...

Paul loved his stained glass..glad it's gone..before I put all this equipment away, I found a little pattern to do angels so might cut a few with the saw before I empty it then clean up and early to bed..must telephone the painters who come tomorrow night and cancel..

I dearly wish to read through all you posts and comment..had that today would be the day, but no computer in the car..lol...

(Cathy), MO

Wow Gita and Sharon, I really wish I had the talent to do something like that. Your paintings are gorgeous. Can I be nosy and ask what they sell for? I might have to try to talk one of you into doing me a wolf picture!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Don't have the energy to go outside right now..a nice warm bath, hot chocolate and burn muffin is in order..gradually going through posts..

Not sure if it was Liz or Jeannine who asked about paper piecing..found one of my patterns..

These can be photo-copied on regular paper and work from there...if you notice the square which can be enlarged or decreased in size have numbers..so what you would do is place square number 1 and then find #2 place good side to good side and sew a seam..iron out, then go on to the next and then the next until your square is done..then the paper is pulled off the piece and you always have a perfect piece...somewhere I also have placemats and chair pads done the same..had them on my table set and they were gorgeous..no effort..

some of you asked about the "Group Blast" d mail that I used. That is just a part of our Dmail, and it allows us to send the same message to a gazillion people at the same time, without having to type it over and over again.

It was easier for me to use it, I thought. I didn't mean to confuse you.

I am still waiting for Ruby, I don't have her address or anything, so maybe tonight.

sort of feeling better, just very lightheaded. My neighbor Kay just brought me some Sprite and Mylanta, also cat food....so all should be OK by tomorrow, I hope. this is not fun.

Cat, I think Betty and Gita are much better at painting wolves than I am, but I might try when I get out from under this one I am working on now.

Gita, when I sent you the background of the painting I am doing now, I meant to tell you that I paint in layers and let the undercolors show through. in this particular one when the birch trees are added the trees themselves will have texture by using some other media, like gel or maybe even tissue paper or rice paper. The lady wants it to be semi abstract, and that's what she will get. I haven't been able to paint yesterday or today, and i am so far behind.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

thanks all!

Betty you will never guess what arrived!!! the parcel!! after all this time!
I am not sure how you sent it or what it should have been in but it didnt arrrive in good shape. sorry.

It arrived in a soft bag?
there was a porcelain santa head and arms? no packaging around it, it was smashed. sorry. no glass? not sure if you sent that. they had obviously opened it as all the foil was unravelled and scrunched into a ball. is it still usable?
i got the solering iron, the book and pattern and the santa cloth pictures and lolly pops for the grandchildren. thank you so much! there was a little twist of wire, is that the solder?
well i hope that was everything, as i said its been bashed around a bit, im so sorry but we will see what we can salvage....
thankyou so much!

x

p.s of course i will share the grandbabies! your family arnt you!???

xxxxx

Victoria Harbour, ON

How wonderful Laura..my goodness that must be about what 5 months ago..twisted wire was to use on different projects...I'll send you more porcelain santa's...must have broken open the box and then through it all in..glad you got the material santa's..now you'll have to try the sleighs..the foil should be usable, the only time it's not is if it's lost the stickyness..sent you the 'fib' that's what you press the foil down with..didn't send solder remember because I thought your DH could pick some up, weighed too much..but am pleased you got the soldering iron..

I hate it when a parcel doesn't arrive..would hate for the receiver to think I haven't kept my word..so I'll sleep better tonight..want to see you make something..

In fact..was telling Suzanne this morning of a cute pattern that only takes 1/2 hr. to do and you can use up all your left overs..she's always wanted to make a zillion pieces to put on packages at Christmas so have them cut out, while watching t.v. I'll foil them and who knows if I get up bright and early might have one made to give her tomorrow so she can decide..

Good luck with your stained glass efforts...

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Gita I love your paintings!
Betty glad to hear that you are home safe and sound.
Laura how exciting a granddaughter :)
Sharon- Have you eaten anything yet? Hopefully not the cat food! Sorry couldn't help myself!
Liz- Yes I take the dogs in the pet store with me. Cinder does fine but Scrappy tries to eat everything!
Carol are you staying warm and dry?

Had a good day today. Helped my friend Myrna with some more stuff at her house, went to lunch together then ran a few errands and came home and cleaned up doggie doo in the yard (my least favorite job!) I know you where all dying to hear about the doggie d! Going to try and go through some more seeds that I recieved and look up the specifics about them in the Plant Files. Have a good evening! Hugs, Rachel

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Rach....nope the cats ate well. I am still on Sprite and crackers.

I still have not heard from Ruby, so I don't have her info yet, if I don't hear by tomorrow, we'll just move right along and pick her up whenever she appears. OK?

You all have a good night. I am feeling better, but am about out of steam today.

No hugs tonight.....don't want to give you a germ.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Sleep well my friends. Sharon glad to hear that your able to eat a little something. Sending you Cyberhugs (no germs!)
