Fall 2007 RU

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

We are scheduled for 1:30 at Logee's. They will call me back with details.

The Vanilla Bean's manager said they are a counter service restaurant and he couldn't guaruntee we would be able to sit together or that there would not be a huge line that may slow us down for Logee's. He recommendede their sister restaurant: 85 Main. I will check it out along with some places closer to Danielson (http://www.85main.com/menusfinal.htm )

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Thank you, guys, for making all this effort on our behalf!
Have to admit, I'm more in Kassia's camp--eating is a priority! Right up there with visiting a great plant nursery!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thanks Dave!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm in the pile that values a wonderful meal (that I don't have to cook). I think my DH is coming with me. 85 cafe looks YUMMY!

man am I pouting
Allison

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Allison - one of these days we need to to a greater NYC area RU. Maybe in the Spring?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh, Allison! Until just now, I had never looked up where Denville was. I thought maybe central Jersey, 'cause the name wasn't familiar. I grew up right near you in Chester right on Main St. How long have you lived in Denville?

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

I totally agree with the greater NYC area RU.. :) I'm only like 1hr or 1.5hrs from the city..

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

NYC would be great for me..... it will be five years in January that we lived here (so less than three years gardening btw) my aunt has lived here for years and years... since we were kids... just a coincidence we bought the house here.....although I always liked it.... but we went to the Chester craft fair last week as a matter of fact..... I love the location of Denville as for traffic.... but just wish there was bigger property we could afford.... it's a bit too tight here for my taste but the compromise is less travel and traffic to work for a place we can afford... I figured I am working more than I am awake at home... not counting the weekend.... so might as well deal with it for now.... and the neighborhood is great my one neighbor ... now is like my grandma.... we were just moving into the house and she drove by and tossed me her keys to the house and asked me to keep an eye on it while she is in florida for three months...... my mouth dropped.... I grew up in Garfield which is urban now..... would never imagine giving one of the people I knew for years my keys to the house... never mind a stranger.... and the woman on the other side brought me a violet in a cute purple pot (which I killed in a few short months) and a pile of recipe cards and all the phone numbers of her household members.... I felt like I moved into a TV show... could not believe these things really happened outside of our cold neighborhood where I grew up and it is in NJ.... who knew???.... so that part I love

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok, I really want to meet everyone, and discuss things at lunch...BUT...lol...I sadly am not going to be able to attend lunch with you bunch, def Logee's, def plant swap. I work 11p-730am. So, I'm working Friday into Saturday, packing the pups up, dropping them off at my parents house, then coming up. I, and my better-non gardening half, will be up around 1230-1pmish. I hope everyone will still be there :-( On our way up, I'll stop at McD's, or BK, and eat a fry, or two, or three, in a toast to you folks from the NE Chat eating lunch...lol.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Icosden, you're right near me. I'm not sure how close Pawling is, but I know it's nearby. Guess I could check the map.

Allison, getting out of our driveway on the weekends was nuts. So many turists! I haven't lived there since 1983. Our neighbors were truly great people too. They practically raised me. We were lucky. We had two acres right in the center of town with a big forest bordering the back of our property. We'd go out to the woods and make secret forts out there and never come back 'till we heard the dinner bell.

Hem, so long as we get to see you, that's what's important.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I just can't wait to really meet everyone!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

things are working out!!!!! oh it will be fun!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I need to hire another assistant for myself by then - Kym left a while ago and I've posted on Craig's List (@ $25 a shot - do you know how many seeds I could buy with $25?) but no perfect person yet. My DH wants to come but he works in the am on Sat. and by the time he gets home etc. the entire thing would be over!

Hoping things will work out for me, too. Who was it from the N of Boston who was going to carpool with me? (Hanging head because I can't remember her name and I'm too lazy to scroll ALL THE WAY back up....

xx, Carrie

Ok, I need help, sort of...I'm really OCD/AR about directions when I haven't been someplace before. I mapquested, and yahoo mapped...I did just make them verbs, directions to get to Logee's. Yahoo maps is saying it's aprox 239.4 miles, and aprox 3h 57m. Mapquest is saying it's aprox 252.03 miles, and aprox 4h 18m. They also have both, extremely variable directions, on how to get to/near Logees. If someone from the area wouldn't mind doing this for me, I will be more than thankful and esctatic...Can someone please give me the heads up on what directions are more accurate/dead on, I'm coming from Scranton, Pa the zip is 18510. If someone wouldn't mind plugging that into mapquest or yahoo, and please letting me know what directions are closest, I would, again, be greatly greatly GREATLY appreciative!!! Thanks a bunch.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I lost the thread for the Fall Planting...question, someone please help...This year I went a little bit more tropical/expensive with my annuals. I now own several Calocasia, and Alocasia...I know how to overwinter the elephant ears, but the others I have no clue...I thought they had a big tuber, but, after ripping one out of a pot, I found this not to be so true, they are more like a giant leek, sort of...How do I overwinter these? Also, I purchased a honeybush, no clue on the gen/sp, and variegated shell ginger, no clue on how to over winter those either...help, someone, I'm about to have a frost, and I just can't help it...lol.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Hemhostaholic (aren't we all?):
Your best bet is to take I-95 to I-395 north and then follow the directions on the Logee's website:

http://www.logees.com/directions.asp

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Hem, I'd take route 84 straight through to Hartford. Looks like it's pretty much a direct route. In Hartford you can take Route 2 E. to 395 N. I'll be taking route 84 myself from Carmel. You can dmail me and I'll give you my cell number for your trip if you lose your way, you can follow us.

I wish I could help you with your Colocasia and stuff. I never grew them.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hem I can't help you but you got me interested to see how far away it is for me. Almost the same as you actually! Yahoo says it's 243.9miles and approx. 3 hrs, 45 mins from my house to Logee's. Mapquest says it's 244.03 miles and 4hrs. 6mins.
Unfortunately I have my DD baby shower that day so there is no way I can come.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Amy from Logee's called me today. She is not 100% certain we could have the actual tour in the middle of the day (they are small, will have customers, and she will be on vacation, etc) She will get back to me.
BUT, news to me, the tour costs $15/person, takes 45 to 90 minutes and spends much of the time in the back room where they propogate (propogate the plants that is). We are more than welcome to browse and come as a group w/o the tour. In fact, if we toured, we would have to be 2 groups because they can only put about 7 per group. We may also have some of us take it and others not.

So I need to hear from you again. Is the restaurant above good with folks (85 Main)? And, who wants the $15 tour.

Personally, I think I would pass on the tour because its more propagation than I could handle (hmmm..) and I'd rather talk you folks. But maybe someone who took the tour could enlighten us

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I think I'll opt for the tourless tour. We can lead our lovely selves through the place and ooh and ahh and learn from each other, right?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Tourless sounds good to me, too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe clueless too?! Thanks for the efforts Dave. Still unsure of my attendance - family stuff to be resolved.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

85 Main fine with me. I've been there before so I'd skip the tour and hang out with friendly forumers.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

OK, Victor - you can ride shotgun from Danbury.

Southington, CT(Zone 6b)

Well, gang, I passed through the Logee's area this weekend on my way east & checked-out some alternate restaurants. The Vanilla Bean is actually quite a ride away from Logees, in Pomfret near the exclusive Pomfret Prep School (which tells you something). There's several more down-to-earth choices in Danielson & Dayville. Right across from the cute little park in Danielson (Davis Park with gazebo but few benches) is the Danielson Inn Restaurant, with reasonable prices, good parking, & inside seating for about 40(closes at 2:30 on Sat). For nautical tastes there's George's Galley which is really interesting. A bit further up around Dayville are several others, like the Baker's Dozen with many luncheon sandwiches, wraps, etc. in the $4-$5 range & seating for maybe 20. Across the street is the bigger Pizza (Route)101 with a very wide menu ranging $6-$10 & larger indoor seating. There's also several Chinese restaurants between Danielson & Dayville. Anyway, just some food for thought.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I'll skip the $15 tour, too. Wandering through Logee's is a beautiful site, and it's jam-packed with plants. It would be very tight walking with a group.

Not into fancy eateries, huh Nerm? LOL I'll eat wherever.

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Sofonisba.. Yup you're right by me.. We've been travelling almost full-time until now.. DH got staffed locally now and managed to unstaff me (I worked for him) so I'm home now.. So I'm always around now.. LOL.. Before, I was never around, now I'm here full time.. So stop by.. :)

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

What? No more travelling for you? So will you be able to come to the RU?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

no tour for me either! all I really want is to talk and visit with you guys!!!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Well, the point is now moot. Amy called and said they felt they could not do a tour. So it will be browse and chat.

NERM, Will you be joining us?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thank you for the info, Dave.
I feel better about just gathering and chatting, too.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Browse and chat is good!

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Think I will be around for the RU.. I though DH and I was going to Johannesburg for a while but DH just told me that they are probably doing a new days there at most so I won't be going with him.. (Probably more likely that he doesn't want me to fly now that I'm expecting..) So, if I'm around, I might need a ride over there.. That is if DH is not driving me.. Not sure I want to drive over by my lonesome self in my condition.. Maybe I can tag along with you or Sequee.. Still couldn't figure out if she's going or not..

Southington, CT(Zone 6b)

It depends on how exhausted I am, Dave. Usually after the work-week I'm so wiped-out I can hardly move until Mon. :( :(

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

They would move Columbus Day up a week, wouldn't they?

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Columbus Day... Is that even a "real" holiday?? Don't think I've ever gotten off of anything for Columbus Day.. LOL.. "Sorry, can't attend that meeting cuz it's schedule on Columbus Day.." :) LOL.. Does anyone get that day off?? :D Don't think I can use that excuse.. :)
