Whats blooming today #10

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Pretty Celeste. So, what's up with the bees? They were all sleeping on my cosmos. I knew they weren't dead as they moved when I blew on them.

Good morning, all. Oh boy! Looking at all these wonderful photos is a great way to wipe the sleep out of one's eyes and get motivated for the day. (Not like I haven't already been up for hours. I just haven't been motivated!)

I love all those beautiful lilies with their wonderful colors.

Anita and Celeste - I'm still pulling those MG's out 4 years later.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

That sure is orange Anita. I like the homeless bees.

MG's come in second on reseeding - Nicotiana is still #1 and cosmos 3rd. I do like to look at other peoples though - kind of like cats.

Lilies look good Pixie, good job on the poppy.

Here's one that bloomed today, and it's not at all like we expected it to look.

WOW! You guys! Great shots! Victor, YJ have been the scourge of every house I move in to. Last year DH was being helpful and got approx. 100 YJ stings! They got under his shirt and, as I'm sure you know, can sting and sting and sting again. Thank goodness DH isn't allergic to YJs - yet. His skin is getting very sensitive - last year I had lots of lantanas and he would go out to dead head - his meditation - and come in with his arms and shins on fire. He has a bad back too. (I watch from my lounge chair and make plans for all the bulbs I'll have him plant this fall.)

edited to say: Funny.... I don't remember the Fords having a dog. Is that a requirement?

Ouch!

Hi everyone! Thank you all for sharing your beautiful pictures once again! I am curious to know why Dahlias are considered high maintenance? Also, I believe mine has powdery mildew; is that common with Dahlias? Actually I am having a bad year with the powdery mildew. That mahogany Monarda I posted back on one the the threads was in a bed next to a big patch of zinnias and both were destroyed by the mildew. I had to cut the Monarda totally down to nothing (baby leaves growing back, whew!) and rip out all the zinnias. I even have it on my cosmos and coreopsis. I have been really conscious this year to not get water on the plants in the evening, and none of the affected plants are/were crowded. Anyone else having mildew issues?

Pixie- Nice poppy! I have been trying to grow them for 2 years but have had no luck getting blooms. One of my favorite flowers.

Al- I agree that your butterfly picture is a winner! Love the coneflower bed too. Which cultivar is the white one?

Kassia- What Zinnia is that big orange one? Gorgeous!

I LOVE CLEOMES :-)

This is Cosmos 'Pinkie', which looks a whole lot like Al's Northwest Cosmos Dahlia

Aspen - my lavender pink monarda has powdery mildew. :( I think it must be the rainy nights that are the culprit here! I don't know how to stop that......I snipped some seed heads today, but I'm not sure whether that was a good idea or not? Pretty pics, by the way!

Holy cow you guys have been very busy. As usual Pixie has many gorgeous blooms as does Anita. All this bee talk has me watching them more than usual. Buzz buzz. Your climbing lily Candyce is very pretty, were you expecting a darker color? Aspen luv those cleomes. Oh ya and flowerjen I got a wrong color phlox too that I am going to have to move. :( Don't ya hate that.

To make it easier for butterflies to land on my zinnias, I've carefully plucked 40% of the petals off the south side of each blossoms (butterflies prefer a north heading for landing):

I love to hide a small magnet nearby - drives them crazy!!

Whitehall, PA(Zone 6a)

It's not nice to confuse the butterflies, Victor ;-) That's interesting though.... I had no idea they were so particular about the way they land!

These are boring old hardy mums, but I love the way the colors came out in this photo

Al, I really like night queen. Checkers was my favorite member of the family.

Brugmansia "Jerald's Joy" is putting out some nice blossoms two months after getting it via USPS but, alas, has no fragrance yet.

Hey David! You thinking of going to the fall RU?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Aspen, I have no idea the name of that Zinnia.... I still have the package of seeds... I will look...

Anita, the bees are sleeping here too.... oh brother.... they are all over!!!!

and this one is cute.... but I have been stung this year... so I am not very fond of them anymore.... I will take pictures but....they should stay away from me!!

Dave (47),

I think Checkers was everyone's favorite member of that particular family!

Aspen,

IMHO, Dahlias are high maintenance because you have to dig them up and store them and divide them and dust them with things and use a sterile knife and find a place to keep them that you'll remember and then plant them and fertilize them and stake them and fertilize them and water them and fertilize them and they still look like weeds for most of that time. Then they have such purty flowers that you forgive them. Then you stake the ones you didn't stake earlier. Some people dis-bud them, so instead of several small flowers you have one huge one, but that's cruel.

Good grief! Do you always wake up in such a joyful frame of mind, Carrie?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Looks nice David. How are the mites for you?

Kass - did you get stung by a bumblebee?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Of course, Pirl! Don't you?

xxx, Carrie

Whitehall, PA(Zone 6a)

LOL Carrie ! What you describe does sound like a lot of maintenance. All I did was plant my mine, water it, and when it got a real tall stem I staked it. I didn't fertilize, dust, or disbud. Where flowers are concerned I'd take more-but-smaller over less-but-larger any day. I have only one plant, so I don't think the digging and storing will bother me. Now if I had as many as Al it might be a different story. ;-) I can see why you would want so many though; they are truly gorgeous and one plant gives so many flowers!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Me too - more flowers is better. I have about 5 huge plastic pots each with three tubers in them (originally). Last year they were pretty, even though I still thought they were weeds until they started blooming.... Before frost I just dragged the pots inside. They sat under the table all winter and we put them out this spring. I still thought they needed to be weeded until last week!

Northeast gardners,
In my streetside garden I have a small tree of a Crape myrtle. It is in full bloom since early August and is truly breathtaking. Crape Myrtles are considered to be of marginal hardiness in my zone 6 garden but this one has bloomed gloriously for me the last 5 years. I don't know the variety name because I bought it at agarden center which had lost the label, but it is a lav/pink color. It would be worthwile for you to try if you are in the same hardiness zone 6.
