I've been admiring similar trees in my neighbors' yards. But I did always think that they were only marginally hardy up here! I'm glad to hear of your experience. Thanks.

Whats blooming today #10
arfitz - I love Crapes and have about 8 - 10 different ones.
arfitz - welcome and glad to have you here.
Victor - do you have photos of yours? I do have one, also nameless, and it's so beautiful and such a welcome treat.
I'll look for any good ones. My camera cannot seem to reproduce the colors of the Crapes very well for some reason.
Outside my front LR window. In the sea of Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' are: three pink Rhodos (Clematis being trained up all three), Viburnum 'Mohawk', Physocarpus 'Coppertina', Hibiscus 'Kopper King', Fothergilla 'Mt. Airy', Clethra 'Sixteen Candles', 'Dragon's Eye' Pine and a pollinator Viburnum for V. 'Winterthur', which is out of view to the lower left. The shrub outside the bed (but practically touching it now) in the upper left corner is Viburnum 'Shasta', one of my absolute favorite plants. At the bottom is wandering growth from Lonicera 'Manifich', which grows on a trellis next to the front door.
Beautiful Crape Myrtles, Victor. I've used the small mesh in the past and it's hard for the times clematis have to be cut back for general shaping or to increase vigor. The wider mesh makes it easier but still a job.
Thanks Pirl. Yes, I've thought about that with the Clematis. This is a group 3, so it will be cut down to the ground each late Winter. Could be a pain. That's why I consider this an experiment.
Some clematis seem to relinquish their grip more easily than others. They get you by the tendrils all the time.
I kind of enjoy being held by my tendrils.
I gave you the bait and you took it!
Can never pass it up. They would take my joy buzzer away from me! Thanks for the feed!
Arfitz - Welcome! You are so lucky to have a Crape! They are one of my real favorites, but I can't have them in zone 5. Victor - yours are very pretty. I love the shade of pink of your almost fuchsia one.
And Victor - watch that you don't get your tendrils yanked by those YJ!!
Dave and Carrie - Is Checkers buried at the Library or in Arlington???
Aspen - pretty shot of that mum!
Pirl - you're really good at that, and I like to just sit back and wait for Victor to post......:)
DB, you can always try to grow them in a container and move it to a garage or basement in the Winter. Well worth it.
Victor - I tried that with a few things, but they didn't fair well. Our basement here is just an ancient stone basement from the 1700s.....too cold and no way to keep them watered.
Is it as pretty where all of you are as it is here today?? So gorgeous.....the yellow of the heliopsis look like neon in the sun right now. Any idea why our green glads bloomed before all the other colors??? Or why my clematis haven't bloomed yet? The vine looks fine, but really late on the blooms.
DB - someone has to do the job so I play second fiddle for Victor. Glad to do it, too!
Not nice here - starting to rain.
I appreciate the second fiddle Pirl, though I also play with my own fiddle from time to time.
I'm going to behave, Victor.
Lovely and sunny here. A bit humid but not oppressive.
T-storms about to hit here. Was a disappointment today. Nowhere close to the nice forecast. Was going to take the boys to the city - glad I didn't.
Pirl - you're too good....Somehow I can see Victor starting his own Seinfeld-like sit-com.........."It's a show about nothing..."
Victor - "the city".......Is there only one???? :)
I'm sure even Victor agrees - there IS only ONE city. Even Frank Sinatra said that when you're leaving NYC you're going nowhere.
We just started with the rain. I managed to plant three hosta, three phlox and one little tree, Chionanthus virginicus, before the rains were too much for me.
When you're anywhere near NYC, you call it "the city". Yes, there is only one.
Great photos and laughter today everyone! Thanks!
Harper
BTW, the Gloriosa got MUCH better to look at. I'll post a photo tomorrow.
*yawn*
Al, I got stung by a bee... if it was a bumble bee I don't know... I am just fortunate that nothing was left inside the skin so all I did was scream a lot and feel bad!!!and was very careful after that!!!!
Cosmo's are finally opening.
