Reds and pinks part II

Holly, you sent me some of those seeds, Aster Seastar, only one made it, don't know what happened ??? I'll post a pic when it blooms, I'm really watching it closely!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

the aster is pretty...I was going to guess it was a dahlia :)

I was on the porch with my coffee this am and had to snap a photo of this... back view of Oriental Lily, Lilium “black beauty”

Wonderful Wind!!! Beautiful picture. Yeah, I was gonna guess that the Aster was a Dahlia too. I planted dahlia for the first time this year. They can sure grow large. So far, I have had a white one and a very dark coral one bloom. There are still a few others one to bloom and I will have to be surprised by their colors.

Thanks for all who are sharing their pics. I am having camera problems, but will try again soon to post some of my reds and pinks.

Thank you, Ruby. Looking forward to seeing more of your garden.

Beautiful, Wind! Who would have thought that angle would be every bit as nice as one of it's face.

Wind Looks like it is trying to cover up it's naked back side. I had to laugh! Very pretty, sometimes the back is as interesting as the front.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

your too funny!!! ...never thought of it like that...are you suggesting we have indecent lilies? please don't report me to DG police for indecent lily exposure!

Begonia Rex ~ I had 3 in this pot...took out one and planted it under an elephant ear but it is not happy. They really don't want any contact with sunlight I'm finding out. This one was just moved after it got a bit burnt from early am sun

Ah dahlias, Ruby wants to see what Ric does with Dahilias........
I haven't had Dahilias for several years but we grew these for a couple of years and my cousins daughter loved them so much she asked us if we could grow them for her wedding.

And this is what Ric did with those Dahilias.....
There are 6 Wedding cakes each one with it's own topper. He's pretty handy to have around. LOL

Wow, wedding cakes AND a potting shed!!!! He's a keeper :)))

Crozet, VA

Wow!!!! Those dahlia on the cakes are beautiful. Yep, Ric is a keeper. Tell him that he did an excellent job with growing and designing. Thank you so much for sharing these pics.

Oh you guys just reminded me, had to dig out the old pics and scan them to the computer. Heather had a huge wedding about 400 guests. What started the whole thing was Ric did a beautiful arrangement for Heather's grandmother, my aunt, with Dahlias from the yard. Heather always remembered how beautiful it was and when she was planing her wedding she came to us and asked about the flowers. She had the cakes made and Ric did the toppers and a small bouquet for Heather to throw. We used 12 in clear plastic pot saucers to hold the arrangements, it worked very well you couldn't see them at all when Ric was done, so it looked like the flowers were sitting right on top of the cakes. They were pretty big cakes, too. When ever I think of Dahlias I remember those cakes. One of these years I'll have to grow them again.
Canna, I think this is Crimson Beauty.

Those are gorgeous, Holly! Ric is really talented.

...I went to school for pastry arts...thumbs up to the colorful dahlias cake topper design! Dahlias are not a common flower used by pastry chefs on wedding cakes so that was a real special touch.

Gartenmeister upright Fuchsia, annual ~ A hummer favorite :) I discovered that I can take this inside for the winter. It over winters beautifully.

Ooh, Wind, I love that one! How do you overwinter it? Does it need a sunny window, or can it be semi-dormant? If it can spend the winter in my basement rather than in my over-crowded morning room, then it's going on my wish list!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi, I do keep it in front of a window with a crowd of other plants but on some of the DG comments it looks like it might be fine in the basement too http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2046/

Chris, Here is another one of your water plants. Wow I almost fell over this morning when I went out and saw it. It's just sooooo pretty. Do you have a name for it?

Sorry Holly, I had forgotten the name of that one. I know I have Texas Dawn and Comanche but those are both yellow. It is a very hardy one so it should do well for you. Thanks for sharing your first bloom with me.

Thanks for sharing pics Sally. Really lovely pinks. Aren't volunteer plants fun? Some of the things that have shown up as volunteers in my front deck bed are most likely from the bird seed that we put out there. John swore that one plant we had come up was marijuana. We pulled it and threw it away, whatever it was.

Have been meaning to tell you Sally that the Canna's I got from you at the swap have bloomed a lovely red this week. I think of you each time I visit that section of the garden. The canna's are probably the favorite thing that I came away with that day. Little did I know that there would be 4 more of them finally come up this year that I have planted at some point and can't remember doing. So, I have really enjoyed them.

The weekend is here again and I hope that everyone has a good one.

Hi Ruby. Glad you liked them.
I am tempted to just plant my veg garden in birdseed next year.! After blanching and peeling a few cups of paste tomatos yesterday, I'm feeling it's not worth it, and I might rather feel like a bird oasis. I did have buckwheat come up from birdseed once, little funny triangular black seed.
That marijuana might possibly have been cleome. (This picture) If you get another and there are thorns on it, it is cleome. Then again, maybe John knows 'it' when he sees it : ^)
It's an honor to have given someone a new fave plant. Frost will kill the tops, but John can dig up the roots and put them in a box for winter in a frost free place. Or , maybe just plop a bag or pile of leaves over the roots and they'll come back. They did for me, even with the one really cold spell we had.

Ruby... that little quip about MJ in your birdseed made me laugh... but it may very well have been! If you look at the ingredients list of wild bird seed mix and it lists hemp, then that is the "wild" version of MJ, and it commonly used in bird seed.

LOL!

Hey Karen - That is what he told me. But, oh well, it is gone now, and I don't know that even a dope smoker would have chanced smoking this things we had.

Sally, yes the cleome has the correct 5 leaf shape, but I wouldn't confuse it due to the fact, that I came of age in the 70's. If you remember them, you weren't there. ha-ha

Speaking of cleome, I was fortunate to get two single cleome's at the plant swap and they are quite beaufitul. Do I dare ask for more or wait for these to spread next year? I believe that I have heard that some regard them as invasive. Any ideas?

You folks all have a great weekend and try to stay cool.

Ruby

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Ha ha I have 'close friends' that also could tell it very well, let's just leave it at that!
Your cleome should be getting long pods on the stem below thebloom area. When they're big enough and you break them open you'll get lots of black seed, you can save if you can be dedicated and go out with baggies and markers or some way to label. Sometimes it helps me ID later if I throw a whole pod in my seed bag. My cleomes have self sown moderately but seem to come up knd of late so have to be careful not to lose them. If not a baggie maybe collect some ripe pods and sow a lot of seed in one small area and stick a label there. These are just some ideas of things I would routinely do if I had any organization about me!!!! I think the fact tha I have three plus methods tells you right there that I don't.

You are such a cutie. I will let you know what I end up doing. Thank you for telling me what to look for. Have a good Saturday!!!

aw, thanks- I did. It was much cooler here, still dry but the temp was beautiful~~~!

I originally posted this plant on the 'Purples' thread, but now that the flower has opened, thinking it belongs with the 'Reds and pinks' - Eucomis 'Oakhurst'

That's pretty! What's the greenery in the background?

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Happy, the "greenery" is Baptisia - either 'Carolina Moonlight' or 'Purple Smoke', can't remember which. I actually never realized how much I like the 'combination' until I took these pictures! LOL I took the pictures a couple of days ago and the stalks were beginning to lean - alas this morning they're starting to lean a little more - probably because of the lack of rain and everything's a bit "wobbly" around here :( 0.7" for the whole month of July and zero for August!!!

Petunia Dolcissima Flambe hybrid
seed origin Italy from Park's
I started these from seed ~ out of 50 seeds I only got two plants to make it (darn seeds are soooo small!) Then of those two, one died and these disappointing blooms are on the one we have.

The reason I'm disappointed is that they don't look like the photo in Park's catalog.
http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&mainPage=prod2working&ItemId=1399&PrevMainPage=textsearchresults&scChannel=Text%20Search&SearchText=petunia&OfferCode=TH1

Wind they are pretty, but I see what you mean about Parks pictures. I have had some disappointments over the years too. I have to laugh at their cover every year, You can really pick out the cut and paste Plants, all blooming happily together.

I now do a search on the computer and compare different pictures and write ups on a plant,/ seed that I am not familiar with.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Between their not blooming "true" to the photo and the poor results you had with the seed, I'd suggest you contact Parks and at least get a refund for the price of the seeds. They've done that for me on occasion, and their customer service is pretty good.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wind- they seem to be a close relative (or same name diff packet) of the petunia Flambe Salmon I tried this year, from Valuseeds. I was also disappointed in the blah pink flowers, instead of the salmon in their picture. I had a bit more luck with growing the plants, but didn't care much since they were wimpy pink. Probably paid 79 cents at valuseeds...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I didn't have the best results with Park Seeds this year. At first I thought it was me but some of the seeds I shared with others also didn't germinate. It seemed to be all or none. If the seeds for a flower germinated then most of them did. If not then it was pretty much a wash for that whole packet.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Swamp Hibiscus
terrible photo I know, but every time I think to go out and take another one it is the end of the day and they are drooping/closing!

... I might write Park's just to tell them. Another plant they have a bit of a misleading photo of is the bicolor buddleia. I have it and it really dosn't "glow" with the bicolors. The photo has to be doctored up. I guess all these catalog companies do that, not just them. The cutting and pasting on the covers is funny. My favorite is in the Gardeners Supply catalog where they cut and pasted in goldfinches on sunflower seed cattail feeders!

I didn't have good luck with the petunia seeds not because the seeds were bad...I just don't do well with teeny weeny seeds*! I decided petunia seeds may not be worth it. I also tried a Burpee petunia (supercascade white, hybrid grandiflora) hoping for a larger white bloom than what you can buy and I wasn't too impressed for the effort. I am really pleased with the ProvenWinner Supertunia hybrids I bought at our local garden center.

* But I do still plant the, oh so small, nicotiana sylvestris seeds because I love them so much. However, this season it did remind me it does self sow :)

Likw the geranium. Ever held them thru winter?

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

hi, no I never even thought about it...have you tried it? no don't tell me...we look like a tropical jungle during the winter months as it is. Every yr I add something new to try bringing in! last yr I tried dragon wing begonia cuttings. Which worked well by the way :)

This was the first yr I even noticed the variegated leaf geraniums ~ mainly because my fav garden center was completely sold out of the regular ones. As a result we also tried a bright fuschia colored geranium this yr and orangey ones with 2-tone green leaves. Nice.

sandwiched Hibiscus blooms!
