That marijuana might possibly have been cleome. (This picture) If you get another and there are thorns on it, it is cleome. Then again, maybe John knows 'it' when he sees it : ^)
It's an honor to have given someone a new fave plant. Frost will kill the tops, but John can dig up the roots and put them in a box for winter in a frost free place. Or , maybe just plop a bag or pile of leaves over the roots and they'll come back. They did for me, even with the one really cold spell we had.
