Reds and pinks part II

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

I had no idea this bloomed so late but was fortunate to have my camera handy to grab this shot - Magnolia 'Waterlily' - deep pink buds open to a soft pink.

Oops, just realized this is 'Pink Stardust', not 'Waterlily' - duh!

I can't get the link to work or find the page again, but it works if you go here and click on catalog and then complete plant list.

http://www.saundersbrothers.com/

Webers is in Winchester. The sale is in late June to early July every year but the best time to go is early in the sale before everything is picked over. They have very nice plants and a good selection of the ones you usually only see in the expensive catalogs. During the sale, everything is half price.

Are you going to the daylily festival at Viettes' in Fishersville? I keep saying every year I'm going to get down there for the festival but never make it.

Crozet, VA

Thanks for the Saunders Brothers link. Yes, Nelson County is pretty close to me. It is not a place that I visit very often, but whenever I do visit, I come home feeling good about the trip. Now, if I can figure out where Saunders is, I might plan a day trip.

John is heading out the door to The Day Lily Festival as I type. I am having some dental issues going on that are keeping me at home this weekend. He, our sister-in-law and two nephews visited Viette's last weekend also. He is going back over to buy a lily they saw and plan to pay half each and hope that they can divide it between the two households.

Please post here the next time that Weber's has a sale. Winchester is good for a day trip. I suppose that I am going to have to settle for day trips and staying nearby home this summer. We are not comfortable with leaving Tucker here and it cost me an arm and a leg when we went to VA Beach in June for a few days. Within the last ten days I have scheduled two major surgeries that are coming up in August. I am not sure how I will be feeling then, so can't really make concrete plans to go away.

I tell you what. I am gonna get this old body all fixed up and make the year of 2008, my very best one yet. I have hated being victim to the crazy things that have happened to my body. I want to take the control back!!!!! Next year I want a "good" trip somewhere. I am serious.

Anyway, thanks for telling me about the nearby nurseries Hart. I am very appreciative. I hope that you all will have a wonderful weekend.

I'll be sure to post about the sale. I can also just pick you up some plants when I go if you're not able to get there. They might have some next spring before the next swap too. The heucheras are in the quart pots so they're only $5 even when not on half price.

Did John have a good time at the daylily festival?

I hope the surgeries go very well and relieve some of the frustration you've had this year with your health. You're past due for some good things, Ruby.

Crozet, VA

Amen!!! Oh John actually just visited long enough to buy a $75.00 plant that he had seen the previous weekend. ha-ha So, he didn't have to pay an entrance fee and lucky for him he will be splitting the price with his sister in law. The one seminar that he is interested again will take place again some time in August and he can attend then.

Yeah, just let me know when the time for sale is around. We will play by ear. Thanks for the offers.

Take care and have a good afternoon.

The first Cosmos to bloom, 'Daydream'

Claypa, I tried that cosmos a few years ago, planted it with Coral Nymph salvia, hoping they would compliment each other , but Daydream just grew tall and never bloomed. It was the end of September when I pulled it up. I'm thinking the soil was to rich in N and not enough P. Your thoughts?

Chester County, PA(Zone 6b)

Beautiful pictures have been added since I last peeked at this thread. VWR's mom's rose is simply gorgeous!

Phlox. Pink and fragrant. Yum!

I never grew Cosmos before... it does have a lot of buds. I never tested the soil here so I don't really know what the story is there, but I have avoided watering it as much as possible. I read that too much water isn't good for them, maybe that's it? One of those years it rained cats and dogs and everything else too.
It's hard to find a mailbox by the side of the road without Cosmos around here, they're very popular. I'm lucky I gave this thing enough room, its pretty big.

Is it my imagination or is everything blooming earlier than normal? I didn't expect to see any Cosmos til September. I have orange ones too, 'Bright Lights'. I try to go easy with orange though.

Claypa, good point about the rain and cosmos, I guess I should have planted some this year as it has been really dry. I did find the Daydream to be a very large plant. Nice in the background, the foliage gives a nice airy touch.
Please consider posting a picture again if it gets loaded with open blooms, I'd like to see that.

It is about two months after the request was made, but Chris here is a red lily for you.

we have a nice COSMOS patch by the street in front of our lilacs~ the regular and the seashell kind ~all pink, lavender and white blends ~ self sows annually. They do like it dry but this season has been too dry. They are half their usual height so far. Here is a photo; not a great shot but gives you the idea. I usually mow a border between them and the street but this year they just wanted to pop up right to the street edge; so I let them!

Hi There Everyone - Wind, I have a question for you. I see that you work some with day lilies. Do you know whether the Stella D'oro day lily is a darker or a paler yellow of Happy Returns? My hubby is pestering me to find out the answer. I asked in the Day Lily Forum last week, but have lost the answer.

Thank you.

Ruby

Hi Ruby, I don't have Happy Returns but everything I've read says Stella is darker and HReturns is paler yellow. If you H likes paler have him also check out Stella Supreme :)

Thanks Wind. He will be glad to know. Also thanks for posting the link. He will have fun with that.

I noticed your location. I have a niece, nephew in law and great nephew who live in Mount Laurel. I have visited there several plus times. If I plan a trip up sometime, I will give you a holler and if the timing is right, maybe I can see your garden.

To all others - I hope that you are having a good weekend.

So many beautiful variations of red and pink. The photo of Crimson Elegance is stunning.

Here is another surprise glad...this one has almost a touch of orange to it, depending on the light. I've got to enjoy them quickly as I never seem to get around to staking them and we're in for a stormy day today.

You know that road paved with good intentions? I think I live on it. ;o)

Ruby -- a question about a yellow DL on the pinks thread? Really! LOL.

I love 'Happy Returns'. It's a clear, daffodil/lemon yellow, and it'll bloom all summer long. 'Stella d'Oro' is more of a gold color, almost like black-eyed susans.... if you see a big patch of gold DLs at a shopping center or along the road, they're probably Stellas.

I bought a 'Purple d'Oro' at an end of summer sale last year, and it's given me a couple of blooms. I agree, the color is a rose-lavender shade, and it's really beautiful! I can't wait for it to grow into a big blooming clump!

Ponds... I was just eyeing a plastic liner at WalMart yesterday... I think it's just 35 gallons, pretty small but a good size/shape to go in front of my deck landing. I don't know anything about growing water lilies or overwintering them, but I'd sure like to try them! Maybe a trip out to Lilypons is in order this week.... If nothing else, I'll pick up a plant to put in my big (20") water garden pot, which now holds only a defunct fountain!

'Happy Returns' is a Darryl Apps hybrid... this is another of his rebloomers, 'Romantic Returns'. The flower in this photo is a little "tired," but this DL has been putting out lots of blooms for me this summer... it would be a good pairing with 'HR' if you get that one!

Very nice pics Tangi and Critter. Thanks for the descriptions of the two lilies. This info is for my hubby. Maybe he will stop asking now. ha-ha This is our first year for day lilies and he is really "in to" it. He is also developing a love for Iris. We have had two special people send us Iris this past month. We went ahead and put the first batch in the ground.

The others that we received were shipped here very nicely. The sender had dried them out really well and actually wrote the names of the different Iris on the fans. Here is the big question? And yes, Critter, another "non reds and pinks" question. ha-ha

How long can the Iris stay in the dry state before having to be put in the ground? Do we have days, weeks or months before we need to get them in the ground? I am very appreciative of all help. Thank you.

I hope that everyone is enjoying their Sunday.

Critter, we got our pond liner from a woman in West Virginia who buys them bulk and sells them. The price was considerably cheaper than at any of the stores. It probably wouldn't be a bad drive for you - she was just across the line west of here. She was advertising in the Valley Trader.

Weber Nursery in Winchester used to sell them by the foot so you could get whatever size you wanted. I haven't checked lately to see if they still have them. Lowes has the preformed ponds but I'm not sure if they carry liners except maybe in a kit.

Waterlilies are very easy. I've grown them by just throwing the roots in the pond with no soil. LOL That doesn't work too well if you have koi, though, because they tear the lilies to pieces. As long as it's a hardy lily and your pond isn't extremely shallow, they will overwinter. Our upper pond is only about 18 inches deep and the waterlililes overwintered fine up there before I moved them to the lower pond.

You might want to check and see if www.texaswaterlilies.com is still doing the coop for DG members. Even without the coop prices and with shipping, they're a lot cheaper than Lilypons and have a huge selection. They have good prices on planting baskets, Pondtabs fertilizers and other pond plants.

The American Ponders forum is a good source of information (besides the ponds forum here) and they have a forum where members can sell or trade. Right now this member is offering divisions from her lilies for $5 each.

Oh, lots of great info -- thanks, Hart! I will try to keep this from becoming a full blown new plant obsession until I can put in the pond I have in mind for another corner of the yard... This pond liner at WM is one of the preformed ones and was about $50, and it's just a bit bigger than the 18" plastic pot I sunk into the ground a couple of years ago (that pot now has a leak and doesn't hold water, thought about using it for pitcher plants this summer, but never got to it).

I'll check out all those links tonight... today, I've got a kitten coming over! DH's cousin just called looking for advice bec. they found a kitten this morning and don't know a thing about cats except they know they want to leave the kitten in good hands. He's driving back to NY tonight, and his wife won't be home this week much either, and they have 2 dogs... so they wanted to know if I knew of any place in Baltimore. When they called back 5 minutes later, I asked if they wanted to drive over with the kitten & have brunch... DH said no way, it's 1 1/2 hours each way, but they jumped at the suggestion, so I think that's the answer they were hoping for. I'll take care of finding him as home! (*sorry to go O'/T... if you want to follow up, please go to the thread I posted in Pets).

Oh, and about the irises.... they can stay out of the ground for weeks and still be fine. Make sure they have 4-6 weeks to settle in before cold weather. You've got plenty of time! It took me a week to get my irises sorted out from last weekend's sale, which worked fine as the ground should be nice and moist for planting this week!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I think the liners are a lot easier to work with because you don't have to have the exact shape of a form. And of course if you buy at a store or online that sells by the foot, you can make it whatever size you want. Just don't forget to allow for the depth and some overhang all around when you measure.

We used old carpet we got for free at a carpet store for the underlayment. They're happy to have you haul it away.

Some people also get liners cheap by contacting roofing companies and buying leftover scraps of the rubber liner used for roofs. I've been told it's safe for fish and plants but we've never used it here.

Even with a largish pond, you can't get but so plant obsessed with a pond. Waterlilies, unless they're miniatures, take up a lot of space.

I meant to tell Chantell your Cactus baileyi is so nice...and Wild Rose the hanging basket of calibracoa 'Rose' is lovely!

Ruby and DG gardeners you can D-mail me anytime for a nickel garden tour! We always have homeless plants looking for a new home. I wish I was closer to the VA area where your swaps are. Our gardens are informal and cottage. Most friends who appreciate the gardens are fellow gardeners :)

Wind, I'll be taking you up on that nickel tour offer, a little later. I'll also have to see where Mt Laurel is, parts of N.J. are a little closer for me. There is a Sept 8th plant swap in Maryland, might be close enough for you.
I grew these from seeds this year, till it was all said and done I only ended up with a few but they sure are pretty. I'll be trying them again next year.

Here is the first bloom on a new hibiscus. It was waiting to greet me when I arrived home from work today.

Wow, magnificient Hibiscus!!! One of these days I hope that some of mine will do that. I have one that is mature, but it blooms white. It should be blooming here very soon too. The others I have are all new this year and only about a foot tall. I am not quite sure what color they will be, but I will love them anyway.

So Miss Holly, what is the fuschia colored flower? That too is really gorgeous. I get in trouble when I come here and see new plants. I need one of each and every one. ha-ha

I hope that everyone will have a great week.

Aster Seastar Mix from Parks. They germinated well and were doing great but only two of them made it into the garden. They were one of the casualties of my shoulder surgery days. I will definitely try them again next year. Isn't the color beautiful? The other one hasn't bloomed yet so I am waiting to see what color that one will be.
