Last December, pyracantha.
Reds and pinks part II
Love your oxalis, Aguane. I like oxalis of all shapes, sizes, and types. Wish we had that one here!
Prettiest pyracantha I'v ever seen
oh, senor! do you smell as good as you look?
I found ANOTHER black widow female today!! In a four inch empty pot laying under the buttterfly bush all summer. My theory is that they ran over here to escape the bulldozers behind me this spring.
I think Aguane should come to our next swap. And bring blood oranges, you warm zone showoff you. LOLOL
Mosbyone, that rose sure is a pretty shade of red.
Stunning! I'd say that color is "two crucial shades deeper than Hooker Red," as a friend of mine used to describe her Alpha Romeo.
My tropical milkweed plants (the ones by the bananas) are also blooming! AND, I found 3 big monarch caterpillars on them this morning! :-)
Wow Chantell! That is a great flower! Is it a zinnia? It is perfect for macro... you're right!
Jill - I'd be SOOOO excited...if I found some cats too!! Does your's self seed or do you collect seed from them?
Karen - wish I knew what it was...I just think it's beautiful!! I'm checking those babies for dried seed heads this next week AND to get another pic..LOL
My Hummingbird bush also had a couple of blooms...so excited!!
Chantell, do you bring in your hummingbird bush? I wonder if I could grow it in zone 6b? I'm growing the african one now and it was really beautiful and is a small shrub ~ in a pot. I have it in the line up outside my front door to bring in for the winter :)
You could always place it near your house and mulch well. Plantfiles is showing it hardy to 7A
Chantell, this is my first year for that milkweed... I actually gave the seed (from a trade) to a friend to wintersow, then pulled up the plants to rescue them when she moved this summer (rental house was going to stay vacant until fall with nobody to water). They survived, and they bloomed, and the monarchs found them! Caterpillars seem to come and go around here, with so many wasps and birds, but from the number of flutterbyes in the garden some must survive!
Beautiful pictures Wrightie.
Ruby
Yes...such pretty colors, Wrightie
That anemone sure is pretty, Wrightie. Much darker and prettier pink than mine.
I love crape myrtles but they sure don't like the soil here.
Thanks, kids. Shall I look for seeds? I'll have to do some research to see if they're viable.
I got some sort of anemone seeds from BlueSpiral (will have to check to see which one exactly)... as I recall, they were fluffy things... I wintersowed them and have a teeny little seedling that might be as big as a quarter now. I guess I'll overwinter it in its pot and see if it pops back up next spring.
Hi Guys, Just checking in while I have a minute. Using my nephews computer, down here in Fl. We pulled in last night and I was up bright and early and out in my FIL's yard. Been pulling weeds all day and couldn't have been happier. I'm going to talk to him about moving a few plants around tonight when he gets home. My nephew has been mowing the caladiums that are growing in the grass in the middle of the yard! Who knows ??? (Holly throwing hands in air and shaking head)
I have the Scarlet Milkweed, too. Boy do the butterflies love it and I had tons of caterpillars on them. I did get to collect some seeds before we left and my DIL is going to try and get more for me. I'll check and see if I have extra when I get home.
Oh, I LOVE those, Growers1! Gawgeous.
Thanks wrightie! The phlox and salvia have been some of favorites for years. This is the first year we tried the Lantana 'Dallas Red' and it certainly won't be the last. We have found that in addition to being quite striking it has attracted more butterflies than our gigantic butterfly bush which is less 20' away!
I've heard others say that Lantana cannot be beat for flutterbye attractiveness. I messed up this year and didn't plant any in spite of that being at the top of my 2007 To Do List. Sheesh.
I always have a pot of Lantana on my deck. Brings them right in. And there are soooo many different colors.
It doesn't take much to convince me to try something new. Lantana will have to go on my list. Thanks for sharing the pics growers. I am about 90 miles west of you near Charlottesville VA. Do you ever travel this direction?
Holly, really good to hear from you. Hope that you will continue to enjoy yourself. If you begin to have gardening withdrawals about the time you hit Virginia on the trip home, give me a holler. I have loads of work that needs to be done in the yard. ha-ha Just kidding, but if you and Ric would like to drop by on your way home, let me know. We would love to have a visit from you.
Wrightie, I hope that you are getting better each and every day. Take care.
Ruby
Hi Ruby!
My hooves have been getting much better this week. In fact, I decided to sneak into the car a little while ago and drive a few blocks to hit a couple of shops. I've been stuck at home for far too long. I can tolerate being on my feet for about an hour at this point, so I try to take advantage of that a few times/day.
Hi Ruby, It's nice to talk to a fellow Virginian. I have traveled through Crozet quite a bit in my life. I attended Virginia Tech, hike frequently in the George Washington National Forest, and have a son who just started his freshman year at Roanoke College. We grew eight different types of lantana this year and the red varieties have definitely been a big hit with the butterflies. Here is a list of few butterflies we've been able to identify:
Zebra Swallowtails - Blue and White
Spicebush Swallow tail
Eastern Black
Buckeye
Lunar Moth
Viceroy
Cloudless Giant Sulphur
Hummingbird Moth
