my 100 + lb weight loss = my new toy

North Augusta, ON

Thank you Gita....I find the accountability helpful..having to report my gains and losses helps me stay on track.

My biggest problem is at night........in the evening I want to snack....especially with hubby here eating everything in sight. Last night, after a full dinner he ate a bag of chips, a hundred or so strawberry marshmallow things, a sandwich, some ice cream sundae, a bag of peanuts, 3 butter tarts......all after 6pm!!! He can do this every night and never gain an ounce....it is hard being around someone who eats soooo much.

3-gardeners

GOOD GRIEF!!!! I cannot believe he eats all that! Even if he is not gaining weight, he is ruining his health--down the road. How old a man is he? There will come a time to "pay the Piper".....High blood pressure---heart problems--clogged arteries--diabetes and weight gain as he gets older etc.
Clearly--he has an oral fixation of some kind here.

WHO does the grocery shopping? If it is you, stop buying all that stuff. I can understand that if you have kids around, you are inclined to buy all this kind of stuff. If not--there is NO reason to. But even kids don't need all that. Keep healthy snacks in the fridge.

I am the huge snacker myself. My mouth seems to always need something in it to chew. Knowing that, I try to buy healthy snacks.

I eat piles of carrot sticks--mostly when at work.
I buy raw Almonds to munch on. I eat each Almond in 3 bites.
I buy dried apples, pineapple, banana chips, and such.
I buy Honey Sesame sticks and indulge in them in moderation.
They are high in fats--but OHHH so yummy!.
I buy the low-fat Mozarella cheese sticks--good protein source!

I consume lots and lots of Mellons (all 3 kinds), Strawberries and all kinds of other fruits. Fruit is always my desert at work along with "Dannon Light and Fit" vanilla yogurt. You will NOT believe how awesome the combination tastes!!!!!!! Just dip each piece of fruit in the yogurt as you eat it. If you have kids, just tell them it is a fruit dip.
Right now, when all kinds of melons are in season, they are soooooooo sweet! Try it! Just buy the 32oz container of this yogurt--NOT the small ones. The yogurt is much creamier in the big ones for some reason.

Believe me--I have a sweet tooth, but I buy only the snack sized chocolates. I love Ben and Jerries Ice Cream (Vanilla Heath Bar Crunch), but after eating a couple of teaspoon-fulls, I just slam the lid shut and put it back.
I never bake. I never eat pre-prepared foods of any kind. Nothing canned or processed or frozen (like pizzas). Never drink sodas. Sodium----sodium---sodium!!! For work, I always take a bottle of water flavored just with a little "Crystal Light Lemonade" powder. I don't care for plain water. Bland-----Blahhhh....

Cook your own soups. As long as you are at it, make about 4 gallons of it and freeze it in serving sized containers. Takes the same time frame! Those empty yogurt containers and margarine bowls work great for freezing!

Last weekend I went to a cookout and ate all kinds of food and drank a lot of wine. For desert, I had 2 pieces of Cheesecake, some brownies, etc. The next day I weighed 8 lbs more than normal, but it all went away. That was just a response to "pigging out".

You KNOW your weight fluctuates every day or week. Don't weigh yourself too often and then fret about having gained 1.5 lbs! That is ridiculous! Maybe you were thirsty and drank 2 glasses of water.

Hey! I am NOT perfect! I'll drink a couple of beers and a lot of wine if I feel like it. It is just that I no longer CARE for all the bad stuff. I do not live in denial nor do I diet. I am simply "informed" and "aware" of all that is NOT good for me. By now--it is second nature.

He is 45...can't teach an old dog new tricks. I buy groceries, and healthy things at that...but he gets cravings and zips to the store and comes home with all this junk food. He was a bachelor for 7 years when I met him...maybe it's a result of that. My fridge is packed with melons and grapes and fruit of all kinds, but he prefers the junk....says melons don't satisfy his hunger or his cravings.

No kids here, I managed to avoid that all my life.....and you can't tell a 45 year old man what he can and cannot eat!!!!! Might as well talk to the wall. He must have a high metabolism or something. He is 6' 3" and has weighed 165 - 175 since I met him 5 years ago....

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

great work everyone. tomorrow on my day off i will start a weight chart so we can see how we are dong each week.

gita - glad one person stuck to his diet plan

three gardens - if you have a craving for a last night snack then buy those 100 calorie snack packs that are sold in all supermarkets. you can get pretzels, potato ships, different kinds of cookies etc. they come packaed in boxes of 6 each. each small bag is exactly 100 calories so you can eat one bag if you feel you have to have something before bed. just don't sit there and eat all six bags at one sitting.

good work everyone. have a great day

Linda

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Frank have not been on but i hope you are feeling better and not in too much pain now. Weight loss is superb.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

linda - i believe they were the authors. i gave the book to someone at work to read so i can't be sure but i think you are right. i've taken a few things from different diets and put them together and it works for me.

dawn - knee is feeling better each day. have a dr. appointment this afternoon. still not allowed to ride my bike or go into neighbors pool.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't have time or energy to read this long thread, but thought I'd post what I heard yesterday...(could just be the "latest" that will be refuted soon): Drinking Diet Drinks Can Cause Heart Problems. Anyone heard that?

Also...I'm at least 30 pounds overweight (lost 8 in the last month) but when a diet says "Eat until full"....that's my problem. I eat from boredom or a compulsion or whatever...has NOTHING to do with hunger. Anyone have anything to help with this? I can't take diet pills as they make me hyper.

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

The Goodwich Sandwich in the book is excellent. Try it.
Linda

Pine City, MN(Zone 4a)

Wow, a big congratulations to you!! BRAVO! to you and DW, too.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

everyone - its weight in time today.

Lyndonville, NY

Good morning Frank.

I am here to report my disasterous week.

Spent most of the week at doctor appointments or wedding shopping. That means I ate out too much.

From my base weight....I am up 3.5 lbs.

Ugh! The wedding is this coming Saturday...festivities all week. I am really trying!

Debbie

North Augusta, ON

I'm up 2 lbs????...which I don't get cause I have cut back on portions (much to hubbys dismay), and I only eat watermelon and berries for snacks. Strange.....but disappointing.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Week 1 on a low-carb lifestyle ( notice I didn't use the D word! ha)
lost 6 pounds

Week 2: lost 2 more

Week 3: none; gained none

Week 4: lost one

I'm eating too much fruit, which turns into carbs and then fat...but I love it! I'm only eating berries and cherries.. :-(

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

wait a second. did we all start this diet at the same time. i seem to only have five weeks for me and i think 4 weeks for debbie or maybe five. you seem to have six weeks.

i will recheck all the posts and get something we can tract for us.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

connie - there is one diet that i have used and still do that encourages you yhou eat all the fruit you want but only up to 12 noon. after that you stop eating it. has somehting to do with the way your body uses foods. i have it on my diet recipes on the recipe forum. it worked for me.

will add you to our list.

frank

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Frank! I already read that in your thread and I'm considering doing it! Makes sense! The only problem with me is that I'm never "hungry / have the munchies" until late at night!! I wish someone would invent a diet pill that would not make you nervous but curb the craving late at night...ah...the cure! :-)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Herbie/Herbie need help....

Now today is day 1 of trying to shed a few pounds, but had DG Gillian and her family over yesterday and they spent the night..now I'm in a quandry..cooked for 10 extra people, have salads/corn/steak/strawberry shortcakes all as leftovers...from Sat. evening, 4 pieces of pizza..now what....throw them all in garbage can????

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Betty,

I'm not presuming to take Herbie's place in answering your question, but as an addition: Do you have an elderly neighbor or relative who would appreciate a "plate lunch" (as my mother calls it!) ? I'm sure someone would love a visit, too!

I've gradually learned in life (I'm 56) that you can't feel guilty about sending some food down the disposal if all else (freezing, etc) doesn't work.
