my 100 + lb weight loss = my new toy

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Herbie -- Sounds like your friend died from myocardial infarction. I had one in "98" and fortuneately survived. I weighed 300lbs at that time and eight years later climbed up to 330 lbs and cholesterol level of 285. Like you I tried many, many diets my entire life and always gained more then I lost. You are a far better man then me! I could never do it but my cardiologist suggested gastrointestinal surgery or die and on 3/10/06 I had lap-band surgery and between post-op and pre-op I have lost 104 lbs and still dropping. My goal is 204 lbs.

wow Herbie, that is amazing!!! I'm inspired. you must have started another thread with some recipes, I'll go look for them.

Keep up the good work!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i haven't started a new thread about the diet recipes. i was just wondering out loud.

tplant - glad you dropped all that weight. between us we lost another hum,an being. LOL

gita - i'm not even sure what other forum i was talking about.

but i do have a confessin to make. i lost my battle of losing weight over one lousy icecream cone. i just went into the store to order a small cone but once i saw all that stuff you could put on it the cone got biggewr and bigger until i ended up with this and gianed 7 pounds

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I think everyone would love some healthy recipes, Frank. You could start it over in the "Healthy Living" forum or just start them over in the recipes forum. We could all exchange. :) That would be fun.

Oh, and don't worry about that ice cream ... just ride your bike. ;)

Herbie we're putting out the DG police force looking for you....we miss you terribly on the 'best/worse and what did I learn forum'

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

You look fantastic Frank. You and your wife. I decided some things needed to change because i have a very slow metabolism and always have . I do things that others do to lose weight and i will gain, so I decided for health`s sake to change some of the bad habbits I had like eating late and portion control of the healthy things I ate to see if my appetite would shrink, I drink tons of water only when I make my mind up to do it or I will not, so I did and lost some weight, nothing like Frank but I eat similarly to that since january.

I still lose slower than the normal person but my main goal is increased health. I excercize atleast 20 minutes a day and was doing 45 to an hour. I had surgury and had to cut down a little of my cardio but i feel better and could only dream to lose 1/4 of what Frank lost. He is a good model for what can happen if you don`t do the healthy eating and what can be accomplished if you make your mind up to change that too.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

betty - i have been away for a few days and i will get back on the best/worse forum asap.

elaine - yes, i think i will go to the recipe forum and ask if they think it would be a good idea to start a thread like that.

hellnz - my wife dances to a fast tune 2 hours a day. which was two hours more than i was doing before i bought the bike. sometimes she would have a weight loss and sometimes not but she keeps lugging away and that helps me. i guess you can say we "feed" off each other. neither one of us wants to be the one who stay the same weight or, god forbid gains some. LOL

i am having arthscopic (sp) surgery july 17th to repair a torn minicus (sp) and until after the surgery the dr. does not want me riding the bike. just as well. deb andi were visiting my son in philly along with my other son and their girlfrieds and i did too much walking and now i am paying for it.

Frank since it has to do with weight loss and thats what your thread here is about, can't you just post it with this?

I am not up on threads...but will find the recipe one. I also know there is a healthy living thread.

I am sure the sweet wonderful Elaine will direct me to get there also.

Take care of that knee....that sounds painful.

Herbie,
When was the first thought of being overweight? Hope you don't mind question.

Frank that is a contest my dh would win hands down with minor modifications, but her eats nothing but junk since he quit drinking 20 mo. ago. grrr

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

hellenzn11 -- The sweets are to replace the craving for alcohol. I used to drink malteds with extra ice cream to help me maintain a balance. It worked and obviously, I'm still alive! Don't know if I would be if I continued drinking? That was twenty-six years ago since my last drink.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

debbie - guess i can post it here. o.k., thats what i will do. i asked on the recipe forum if anyone would be interested in something like that. as of yesterday did not get a reply. if i don't hear anything by this afternoon i will put them up here.

dinu - check the top of this thread to see when it hit me.

made a pulled pork dish for the 4th but i was a good boy. LOL

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

seems there is interest in the recipe forum so i will give it a try there. will start posting later today but if anyone has something to contribute just go there and post up.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I didn`t stick to mine as good as I usually am, but it wasn`t the old days of compulsive eating as I would have viewed the day as a wash and went all the way, I did not though and slightly ate some samplings of potatoe salad and a small dish of pure cream icecream that I knew I wouldn`t be happy over. waaaa waaaa

Good Frank/Bad naughty Dawn

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

its come to the point where we used to live to eat but more and more i am finding that eat to live. doesn't mean that we don't go off the wagon once in a while but whereas we used to keep eating bad for the rest of the week once we cheated. now, we go right back to our diets. its great.

dawn - i don't think i ever had pure cream ice creame and i am sure i don't ever want to taste it LOL

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Only on Debbie.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

hey, I had no idea!!

i am walking but maybe not enough. trouble is if i do more i am in a lot of pain...
how did you find it when you started?
i would love a bike... dont think i would go far at first but i think iwould get used to it..
need a much bigger seat tho... ouch!

i am keen on recipes.. anything i can get my hands on that would help...

thanks

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I made the soup the other day but I didn`t think I was going to like the spinach in it, it was good though and I put a french onion base in it so it was a little different, but good and full of veggies.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

dawn - yhou are corrupting me.

wonder - i made real sure that the seat was BIG. i am having surgery on the 17th and the dr. advised me not to use the bike until a week after but i do take it out for a small spin a few times a week.

i will be posting some recipes on the recipe forum if you are interested.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Frank/Herbie43,
I have loved your recipes in the past! I think it is now time for my DH and I to cut back as well. I'm going to look into the programs you mentioned and make your stock and soup. My downfall I guess would be anything "white", especially anything with sugar in it or on it. We will really have to work on giving up the starches. I love my sweets--but they don't love me! Hmmm, I guess white wine wouldn't be allowed either--this is going to be harder than I thought!

Thanks again for this thread. Your pictures are such an inspiration!
NM

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i am sorry i did not mention this at the very beginning. i do not eat anything white. only grain or wholewheat bread limited to one slice per day and only brown rice.

thanks for reminding me. maybe we could add incentive to anyone who is trying to lose weight by telling each other over this thread if we lost weight during the week. i weigh myself twice a week except if there is a time when i have a party or wedding and i know i am gonna eat more than i need to.

anyone in for that. we don't have to know how mucvh you weighed to start but maybe giving a nbr of pounds we lose will help others. for instance, tomorrow is one of the days when i weight myself. i was 257 last wednesday and i will let you know how much loss or gain i had. remember i had the 4th of july party and the one today for my neighbors 40th anniversary.

any thoughts on this. it's not important.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

sure why not!!

I am just admiring all of you, I am not presently dieting, but I do workout at curves 4 times a week.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

o.k. everyone. get the scales dusted off.

last wednesday morning i weighed in at 257.6 and today, sunday i am down to 256.0 i lost one pound and 6 ounces in just 3 days.

Debbie

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

way to go debbie!!

you go buy that much in apples or something and carry it and see just how much that is! and when you do, think to yourself, this is how much less my heart has to carry and cope with. thats what i do, even when its only a little...

well done.

Lyndonville, NY

Wonder, what did you do to loose 9 lbs! WOW that is awesome work. I think I lost that sweating today...it reached 98 here in lovely NY!

Frank, you still there? Is it any cooler out your way? I even drove down by lake Ontario....temp dropped all the way to 92 there....LOL

wonder - WOW that is great.

debbie - wonderful -- yesterdeay on the way home i heard that it was 99 degrees and today will be worse. you just reminded me to put on the big a/c in the house.

now keep up the good work. my next weigh in will be on wednesday. lets all see improvement.

Lyndonville, NY

Good morning,

I have made a progress! Not so much weight wise, but I have not had soda....or coffee...in one full week! AND...with my coffee...I had to have sugar...so...that is a big thing for me. I think I have passed the caffiene headache stage for that.

I have been drinking crystal light tea, and sweet tea made with splenda...and lots of water with lemon juice! My body doesn't feel so sluggish...amazing. I have also noticed I haven't been having those caffiene highs and lows...when it wears off and you need a nap. LOL

DH gets paid this week so I will work on the soup....and DH said he would love to try this with me! Just gonna have to make something seperate for the kids if they won't eat it. LOL

I am soooo excited! Everyone stay cool. Frank, it is 91 here at 10:00 in the morning.

Debbie

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Frank there was a thread on adaptive gardening , like this one , but the guy had bypass surgury and updates his weight loss.
